My family had food stamps at one time back in the seventies blind mother with five kids and hubby left. You could not purchase junk food or prepared at that time. No chips, cookies, pop, lunch meat etc.. they were for milk, eggs, fruits, veggies, meat, oatmeal, non sugary cereal etc...

He made a video in which he clarified the welfare statement about obese and fudge rounds. He was watching a news segment about how welfare money is spent on average. The percentage of that money being spent on junk food instead of healthy food was extreme. And that's what those lines are about. He has nothing against welfare itself. It's the welfare system that allows that to happen that he doesn't like

I mean, people on welfare often lack education (because that is even more expensive in the US) and therefore awareness. And as already said, healthy food is also quite expensive. It is fucked up but (solely) blaming them won’t solve anything. The problem is much more profound. It just sucks being way done on the social ladder/gradient in the US. That must change.

To begin with, I don't buy that he is that naïve that he didn't know how that would be taken: he just didn't expect to get that much attention for it.
The problem is not that food stamps shouldn't cover fudge rounds: poor children deserve to have snacks in their packed lunches, too, for crying out loud. The problem is the way that the government subsidizes agriculture for a narrow selection of foods that benefit a few massive corporations, while allowing those corporations to gouge the actual farmers. The current system makes it impossible for farmers to make a living selling directly to grocery stores. It makes us rely on niche farmers and farms overseas for anything except for a handful of cash crops that are used for feed, meal, and exports, which benefit big corporations yet again.

My family came from coal country and the use of scrip is very real. This was a way to keep the miners in a form of slavery. The song Sixteen Tons documents that very well. Everything in this song is about keeping people in some form of economic slavery in one way or another.
Thank you for highlighting the frightening level of suicide among young men. Far too many people gloss over that line in the song. This song touches so many people. The main thing about it is that it is uniting people worldwide.

I don't think the line about "taxes ought not to be used for bags of fudge rounds" is a shot against the obese as much as it is a shot against the system that has been put in place. It is estimated that about 30% of food stamp money (over $15 billion per year) is spent on unhealthy junk food like soda, chips, candy, etc,, which then feeds the out-of-control medical industry.

And if you haven't you should read 1984. He is predicted this kind of control back in 1948. I hope that Oliver keeps it up. Great commentary.
Oliver Anthony released a lengthy statement on why he didn't take the record deal. It's because he didn't set out to be professional artist with a fleet of tour busses or planes and all that. He doesn't view himself a being a real talented singer or guitar player, just a guy who plays his guitar in his yard and puts it on RUclips. He has struggled with poverty and alcohol, so he's just singing what he knows. He isn't driven by by success in the music industry.
The reason why this resonates with so many is like you said, we ask feel it, but also because the way he songs it. The emotion in his imperfect voice hits so many nerves. Like Kurt Cobain and Layne Stayley's did.

St. Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store." Exactly what you were talking about referring to the money the miners made having to be spent only in the store owned and operated by the mining company.

we gotta emphasize that choosing to flip burgers at McDonalds your whole life without a goal of promotions to management or higher is not something that deserves a "living wage". Burger flipping at McDonalds is a starter job and that is all it is supposed to be. We can be mad at the pay of it but it is up to the individual to work hard, get promoted and acquire higher paid positions. There are people who believe that everyone, regardless of job deserve a living wage and that isn't how it is supposed to work. We are a meritocracy. You gotta earn the higher pay.

NOBODY deserves a living wage. NOBODY deserves to just start making good money from their first job. People must EARN good money. Nobody is entitled to it. Yes, there are "starter jobs" for a reason. Working fast food is a starter job and not intended to be a career unless you work hard, get promoted and choose to stay in the food industry as a manager or general manager, etc. Once you reach those ranks then yes, your income should improve. The amount of money that McDonalds makes has absolutely nothing to do with anything. They EARNED that 207 billion by starting a business and growing it. They are not obligated to pay anyone a living wage until that person has worked hard and earned it.

    • @gabemoore2840

@@p8triotmode "People say" What people? No this isn't nonsense because McDonald didn't "earn" a dime. They like other companies under pay and over work their employees to create a profit for their share holders while selling a sub par product to a consumer all too happy to gobble up a $2 sandwich. And yes if someone works for a 207 billion dollar company they DESERVE a living wage and yes the amount of profit Mcdonalds makes vs what they pay DOES MATTER. I'm curious to know what you consider not a "starter job" or what you consider a job worth enough value for someone to earn their right to exist? Because traditional "Living wage" jobs are vanishing quicker then your 20 piece nugget box.

The loyalty issue has been going on for decades. The only places I ever worked that cared about their employees and appreciated them, were independent businesses. ( Mom and Pop shops etc.)
Your mother probably understands that, and her argument might be similar to mine. I know my problem is that the younger folks come to work, but don't do their job... then older broken down folks, like myself, get stuck doing twice as much because of it. I am now disabled due to these circumstances. As we age our bodies break down. When you get stuck working twice as hard, our bodies break down faster.
Life isn't easy, and we are fed up,and we're tired of working so hard to support people who flat out manipulate the system so they don't have to, and for the government to rob us and mismanage our money through endless taxation. Y'all are obviously learning about the struggle, from what you said about your 401k.
Trust me though Gen x,and boomers have been dealing with this their whole working lives too! All you can do is vote and hope it helps to change things. If it doesn't, then something else will probably eventually have to happen. If you know, you know.

There are more people living in the same space, so why are our taxes higher when there are more people paying for the same roads and such? It is simple - companies do not take care of us - the government wants more of our paycheck - and then we are taxed twice or more on a dollar - so how are things not worse???? A house and car payment has raised multiple times more than our salaries. It is a simple joke! Anyone that thinks things are not bad are stupid young people that have no basis of thier understanding.

Oliver Anthony is the man , true talk, unfortunately it's obvious one of the only people in the world to speak the truth, have the balls to fight for the right, to have at least a chance in this corrupt world. Anyway you two reading his song and talking about it, wow, you must not be hurting for money, if people are ignorant enough to not know then screw them. But you guys are boring and get stuff together before you pretend you're some kind of professional reactor, sorry.😢. I can read also, but thanks guys. You cleared so much stuff up for the world 😅.

Riches and those who hold them are not a problem. We all strive to obtain them and according to Dr. Thomas Sowell only 3% are stuck in their class they are born in 97% move within the income brackets throughout their lives. Jesus said
The Love of money is the root of evil. Money and guns are not problems People who do evil are the issue.
The wisest man who ever lived according to Jesus claimed you have no problems money won't fix
    Sin is the original ish

Welfare should ONLY pay for foods like veggies meats and milk tea and sugar salt pepper flower and such not chocolate fudge or any candies, of course clothing and things needed not comfort foods.

The govt blows so much money on useless spending it makes the welfare budget look like a drop in a bucket. How bout we stop supporting welfare countries and keep the money for Americans. Who cares what Americans buy at the grocery store with welfare. That’s a benefit of being an American. The politicians will have you at odds with other Americans while they pilfer the budget in front of your face.

I think he may be a psyop for rural, blue collar, and conservative Americans.
His lyrics say he's selling his soul by working hard. He is normalizing suicide, drinking, etc.
He has 90 acres, no southern accent during interviews, etc.
He is being highly promoted by mainstream media and right wing operatuves.
His rhetoric is designed to whip the right into rage. We work hard to succeed, not whine and get angry.
    Just my opinion.

You need to have your tinfoil hat adjusted. It's turned up to the delusional setting. When this song broke he still owed $60,000 on his land and is living in a 20 foot camper trailer he bought for $750. Sit down and shutup.

First and foremost,I sincerely apologize for being so harsh, and I enjoyed Your response about the meds. That was a good one, though I’m 64, been in coal mining for 45 years and take no meds whatsoever, legal or illegal. You did touch on the subject I referred to , but neither of You seem to realize how bad it is. It is not just the Epstein debacle, it is rampant and the elite powers that be in DC, on both sides, and most of the upper echelon of Hollyweird are in it up to their ears. Have You heard of the Sound of Freedom documentary? I really wish You would take the time to see it, You might thank Me, and possibly understand Why this is a bit of a sore spot for me when People sidestep the issue. And just for fun, as You mentioned some coal mining history, do You know where the “redneck” thing came from? I respect both of You and figured I owed You an explanation for My somewhat harshness. Sorry.
