  • This type of vehicle has many names: ‘Tuk-Tuk’ in Thailand, ‘Auto Rickshaws’ in India, ‘San Lun Che’ in China, or in the Philippines simply called a ‘Tricycle.’
But I call them ‘Tricycle Alternative Vehicles’ since they are completely different compared to the usual side-car style ‘Tricycles.’
One of the pioneers of this genre is from the Italian brand Piaggio, yup aside from their namesake scooter line like the MP3, and the highly popular Vespa line they also build the Apé all the way since 1948!
The one we have here is the Indian-spec 200cc petrol City Fi variant, in Europe Piaggio still sells the Apé Calessino Cabrio! Piaggio also sells the larger Apé Xtra 400cc Diesel!
Since this is my first ever time riding a vehicle like this, how will I cope up riding a Tuk-Tuk or TAV!?
Maybe after riding/driving this, I may be proficient enough to ride any old Vespas! See how I react stupidly here!

Back in the '80s and early '90s, many smaller Jeepney manufacturers in the provinces were building high-capacity short wheelbase owner-type jeeps that seat 8-10 passengers!
Norkis should've done this in the '90s when they still had the Yamaha connection, while they were building their own re-bodied fiberglass MultiCabs. Such a missed opportunity!

      To each his/her own.
I haven't ridden the Diesel yet, but I'm so curious on how does it ride/drive!
In my opinion, I would think that the Diesel is a more practical option simply because of its flexibility.
If you think that the Diesel sounds like a generator, ride the Motoposh Pinoy-6/9, that thing is kinda loud even for auto rickshaw standards!

The best way is to test ride/drive them all. So you can determine what is the best for your needs.
The problem is that not all places are willing to let you drive these vehicles, which totally sucks!
I haven't ride/drive all of them to justify my conclusions entirely. Out of 6-8 within the class, I have only "Bite Tested" two. Take note, I didn't drive/ride them for more than 30 mins!!!

In the Philippines, any 'rickshaws' are lumped under the same class as any 'pantra' tricycles. So this Piaggio Ape, TVS King, Bajaj RE, Motoposh Pnoy, etc. may have limited PH highway access. And since most of these 'tricycle alternative vehicles' are powered by either 150-200cc, tollways are out of the question.

@@ferdiehipol Unfortunately, the PH gov't lacks the foresight that will benefit the masses. They don't even listen to their delegates, just their sip-sip na mga tauhan. Tapos dagdagan mo pa ang mga bulsa nila.
I don't advocate replacing one type of tricycle over the other (like jeepneys/PUJs). All the 'pantras' need to do is to install reflectors (front/rear) & right-side mirrors on their cabs as a start.
Believe it or not, the performance of both 'pantras' & 'TAVs' are quite similar! Pantras are lighter, but have a lower displacement engines; while the TAVs runs a larger engine size, yet carries heavier frames & chassis.

I bet it can handle the rough stuff, just change the tires to a more capable ones to handle mud and sand. Also, there are some lift kits you can install too, I don't know how popular are they.
Unlike the typical Tricycles on which is one-wheel-drive, these TAVs are 2WD, that equals to more traction.
These 'Tricycle Alternative Vehicles' are extensively developed in India, they have far more rougher roads in a 10km radius than Philippines.
