First items will differ and in the beginning you'll focus on consumables like Iron Branch, Healing Salve/Enchanted Mango. Depending on attribute class these items are good if you get a kill. Boots of Speed are a solid 2nd choice for most hero's. Items like BKB are later game items. Like in all games items are situational. Having a portal can help in a pinch. Supports will spend most of the gold on Wards and Currier.
