I will watch any "I bought a cheap" video you release, no matter the vehicle. There's something entertaining about seeing a truly cheap car, wondering how good or bad it will be.
In Finland the main dealer wax oiled all Sorentos before they were sold to the first owner. Probably that's why mine has survived without excessive underside corrosion. Mine does also have rusted rear arches, but you can get repair kits for them for dirt cheap and they are easy to replace. By the way, it's a 5-speed auto because it has the tiptronic style gear lever.
This is so so nostalgic for me. My dad had one of these for 5 years, same year wheels and all but silver. 2.5 turbo diesel manual and had full cream interior. Massive fun, amazing on and off-road, decent MPG if you drive it a bit more daisy day to day, and it only had very few things go wrong with it. In the end it had to go as it had 180k miles on it and the rear subframe started to get holes in it. It was sold and used for another year before it wasn’t MOTd since 2018 and is probably sat in a field now as the scrap marker still hasn’t been fulfilled.
Bit of an over statement there to be fair. Most people don't even know the brand of most cars they're looking at, let alone if they're any good or not.
@@Cloud007. It was the first Kia that was really competitive and even rivaled some premium brands. I remember some reviewers even saying that the Sorento is challenging the big dogs, such as Lexus RX, 4runner and Jeep Grand Cherokee for way less money.
It was a game changer for anybody who towed a caravan, a horse box or a small yacht. You didn't need an old Land Rover tucked away for weekends. The Sorento could do it all and be the daily driver. The Sportage couldn't do that, and the early ones were a bit ugly. The Mk1 Sorento could tow 3500kg.
@@timhancock6626 Thats not what I'm saying, the original comment was about Kia being taken seriously in the UK, not just with the towing community but the UK as a whole and I reckon the Sportage was the real game changer in that regard.

That rot reminded me of my dad and made me belly laugh. He was a hobbyist mechanic and bought a few shitters in his time. Land Rover discovery, floor pan rotten. Got his welding gear out of garage but heavy rain started so he went to put it in boot till it cleared and it went straight through the boot floor on to tarmac!! I’m almost wet myself laughing whilst he sent out all the expletives 😂
I'll drive almost anything, but that chassis was scary. The Sorento's reputation for rust is why I ruled out a secondhand one last September. That and the indicator stalk being on the right.
Incredible the rust you guys get in cars there. Here, north of Portugal, the winter can be bad but none of my cars ever had rust (and I own a 32 year old Peugeot 309 besides other two newer cars), crazy sad for those cars.
All that rot could have been prevented by getting a hose under the sills and chassis on a regular basis, to wash off the salt. People don't wash their own car any more, so they don't give it the TLC to make it last. The other moral of this tale is ALWAYS check out a car before buying if you are a private buyer. A two minute walk round of that and you walk away or offer the vendor scrap value.
I always recommend these to my mates when they want a second hand offroader and see the hefty prices of all the popular ones. These and the Hyundai Terracan are top of my list for good value capability.
We had a 2004 Kia Sedona MPV for a few years, this was predominantly used for towing our caravan. For a solo drive it would be a lumpy old bus and cornered like the titanic around the iceberg but put a ton and half caravan on the back and the Sedona came into its own and cruise up steep hills like a freight train. A brilliant workhorse but eventually Hyundai offered us to much money to px it in for an IX35 to turn down. The VED cost was getting out of control too. I was very fond of that big old Korean car, it was so very dependable, powerful and comfortable. Everything we look for in a working car.
When I lived in the Middle East, I went to buy a Tucson (Hyundai) the dealer also sold Kia's, I remember waiting for my px deal and sat in a sorento and fell asleep! It was really that comfortable! My px deal never materialsed and so I went to Ford and bought an escape! Keep the videos coming! Cheers!
cause in UK you can use four total different tyres and this is ridiculous and dangerous, but nobody care, so if you find a car with 4 same tyres mean the owner has enough money to take care of it, here seems just used the car not owned
I agree with other comments that the first-gen Sorento is probably the car that gave Kia a massive credibility boost in the UK. When I was a kid we used to go caravanning, and these where everywhere at campsites. I thought for a Korean car they were pretty stylish, and I think they've aged well. Shame the same can't be said of the structural integrity! Reminds me of 1990s Fords.
Yes, that amount of corrosion hasn't occurred during the last twelve months surely. MOTs are a bit of a mystery. They've moaned about the tyres (particularly the o/s front inner tread very low) on my old Lexus two years running. I don't use it much, however I thought I'd get a second opinion as the front drivers side looks fine to me. The manager of the tyre retailer measured the tread on all four tyres and we agreed with the tester that the back ones are on 3mm, inner low, but he concluded that both the front ones were fine. All of this bearing in mind that they're in the business of selling tyres. 🤔.

I had a 2005 diesel XS, there was a recall due to the rear suspension corroding, you only got the recall from Kia if your car had a service history from Kia, otherwise you had to book it in yourself. I heard about it via a Kia forum I was a member of
Had a diesel MK1 XT back in 2005 , was a very smart sport blue with all the blingy bits and a high spec , was eye catching at the time as not many on the road. Bit crude to drive but was great in bad weather and was reliable. Wanted a Range Rover Sport and couldn’t afford one , eventually 3 years later sold it and finally got a Range Rover Sport.
Had one of these which was a good car until somebody hit it, so it had to go. Had it for five yeras with no problems at all, a bit agricultural but very robust and reliable.
I`d have lost interest in that heap as soon as i saw what was left of those back arches! and when you showed us the chassis... help! on a more positive note it`ll hopefully fetch you enough to get a new jumper?

I’m a budding welder but crikey. This could be lathered in filler and painted with a brush then flogged to someone unsuspecting. I hope whoever gets it does a good job. For a DIY’er, there’s a few quid here.
I had a 2004,3.5 litre V6, petrol, it was a great car! I loved it! It wasn't a bad soft roader either, my only gripe was the road holding or rather lack of it!
Having spent many years in the past driving around in cars worth a few hundred quid which wasn’t abnormal back then I love these vids. I got great pleasure getting about just as well as everyone else for a fraction of the price . The choc brown allegro was an exception but my favourite, a sky blue lada, was sublime
This generation of Sorento was very popular in Greece. Some people still use them, despite the fact that they are quite old. Most of them are very dependable and all of them are rust free. I was socked by the amount of rust..
@@RoderikvanReekum salty water in the distance - rusty car theory isn't as robust as salty roads splashing cold salty water into my scratched rear sill and chassis theory
Great to see you in a mk1 Sorento, had one for 12 years , only the fuel tank let me down , replace under warrant 14 years old ! Got a later one mk2 lots of problems over the years, but still a great vehicle to use.
Matt , never ceases to amaze me , how much does a can of waxoil cost , how much is 5 litres of oil and a few filters ?? We are such a throwaway society here in the UK , normally throwing away cash Mad Keep up the good work fella
I, as an American, can't get over how little yall value used cars over there. Maybe not this specific car. But Matt has reviewed so many that should have a long life left and would be worth thousands if not over 10k if the car was here in the US. So I gotta admit at least when it comes to cars. Yall do seem throwaway. The American car fleet is older than ever before last I heard. My car will be 24 this year. Older than me lol, it would definitely be worth several thousands still.
I really enjoyed this video. You also highlighted the plight of all small business owners: that to run a business successfully you have to go to extra lengths to bring in revenue in order to pay the ever increasing costs of running that business. And for that you have my respect.
my current 2006 Sorento still runs well (except for the occasional coolant leak). The best part is theres no rust since i live somewhere in south east asia
Matt sometimes the tyre date code is on the other side of the tyre, so don't always think that you're being blind as it may not be on the outer side. Ideally they should really be on both sides I think.
Used to own an Auto Titan and even after waxoyling it regularly the seat belt mountings did for it in the end. The rest was ok and it would pull anything like a train. Very handy 3500kg tow limit and more than once it probably towed significantly more with no problems. Shame they rusted so badly and subsequent Sorentos were monocoque and didn't have the tow capacity.
That CD you didn't know, Clannad, there a Celtic music band from Donegal Ireland. Enya was a member! Some non car Friday facts. Great video as always 👍👍
The left side wasn't bad. Could've lasted a couple more years. Or you could maybe try to mend it. The right side though was properly gone. Such a shame. It really looks great from the outside.
I quite fancied one of these when they first came out, I wanted the diesel as I was doing about 25,000 miles a year at the time. The dealer offered me a drive in a v6 petrol and got quite annoyed when I said I’d prefer to drive the diesel version I actually wanted to buy.. we agreed to disagree and went on our separate ways!
It’s only 500 miles a week. 40 miles a day commuting to work 5 days a week and the rest zooming all over the country visiting family and friends. It soon adds up!
Had an 08 plate that was a great tow car until it suffered the dreaded fuel tank delamination at 10 years old, Kia did fix it but it was never ever the same. Cut my losses and got rid.
Hi Matt, good video, the band Clannad are from Gweedore, Donegal, Ireland. Their songs included the theme from Harry’s Game. They also did songs with U2. Shame about the rest on Sorrento.
Pity about the car but every cloud has a silver lining. Keep the Clannad CD. Clannad are an Irish group from Donegal who gained fame in the UK on the back of their theme music to the TV series Robin the Hooded Man which you may be too young to remember. They have a huge following all over the world.
My mate had a Burgundy over grey which we went to Wales in (many years ago) it was a big old beast & at the time i was into sporty looking cars probably ‘cos of our age but that trip changed my mind & anything big & square looking now is more appealing…i’ve only got a old Touran which in two years time will be classed as a ‘barn find’…great vids on these kind of motors👍🏼
I got rid of my XS to We Buy Any Car six years ago. I loved it, but at 160,000 miles the problems were stacking up. I had spent quite a lot on it in the previous two years so I kept it two years too long. I had it for eleven years.
Look at the ad? Well normally I would, but as I’ve said before, I had been watching your videos from the start, and when I bought my car from you, I gave the ad a cursory glance, and bought the car unseen. Not something I would recommend, but I sort of trusted you, and to be honest, I haven’t loooked back. The car is still the best I have ever had. Apart from from my SAAAB 9000Cd. One thing I miss about your recent videos, is the crazy metaphors you used to drop in to the commentary. E.g. ‘in these cars, the back of the vehicle is in another postcode’. Admittedly you need to be British to get that _ and it could be true!😊😊
Wow Matt, so sad the rustmonster turned it into a Kia Sorroto. Really like these chuncky workhorses. Offtopic: your vids are very entertaining, keep it up!
i have one of these the 2.5 diesel 170hp , the manual transmission one , the original engine and transmission drove me from january 2007 to late 2019 480000km=230000miles and changed them now it have 540000km=335000mile on it and still going great except the ac doesnt work and the folding mirror and the keyless entry system but its not something bad i'll wiat a couple years and probably buy an automatic one and keep them forever

It is like opening a book at the last page as instantly on the Autotrader website I see the outcome of the video.
I'd always thought the worst ruster I'd ever encountered was the W210 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which can dissolve faster than a Berocca tablet, but where the Mercedes rusts for fun and puts it on full show, the Sorento takes its rusting SERIOUSLY, and hides it under relatively tidy bodywork.
Its on winter tyres. you can clearly see tread typical to tyres for snow and sub zero temperatures. They are completely dreadful in any other conditions than 10 celsius and below
I can’t stand the way RUclipsrs do their ads in there videos. You though transition into actually using the product and transition out of the Ad perfectly. I really enjoy all your videos for their style and editing.
Yet here I am, with my 20 year old Ford Fusion, which was much cheaper brand new, not a spot of rust. Looks like a brand new car from the underside. Kia should really be ashamed of themselves.
Matt’s Musical Education Time. The mystery C.D.? CLANNAD. Irish folkie type band fairly big in the 80s. Lots of vocal harmonies and reverb turned up to 11. Like plunging your head into a bucket of Baileys. Not entirely unpleasant but you wouldn’t want to make a habit of it.
Had an XS on a 2003 plate….. 9 months old ..traded it in for civic new in 2016…car was just starting to need big money spending on it . Fuel tank just started to leak when i was picking up my new car later in the week…i had to renew the turbo on it …
Hi Matt, great channel and all, I love your no nonsense approach and great cheeky reviews. However I see one thing strange: you stress the importance of doing vehicle history check and how it can avoid you making a costly mistake, yet you had bought that Kia before making the check on it. It would reveal what it did - that the car failed Mot on rust recently and the low price indicates nobody bothered to fix it... So excuse me but what gives?
Kia cars from this era all rust pretty easily it looks like. My grandpa has a Kia k2500 truck and I don't think I have ever seen a vehicle with a higher tendency to rust. That thing only has 150k kilometres on it but it already had severe rust issues TWICE, we had it fixed but the rust came back again. Not to mention the camshaft failed too at 145k
THe engine runs. The CrDi Sorento has a D4CB engine in it, one of the most popular light commercial vehicle engines in south east asia. They're in a bunch of things, the 1-H from Hyundai is called an iLoad in australia, and every second courier van is an iLoad. So the market for running engines is crazy. You can buy a wrecked Sorento that's been rolled or rear ended for a few hundred bucks, drop the engine out on it's mounts onto a pallet and sell it for three grand in a matter of days, because they're going for five grand from resellers. rebuild, 7 to 8 grand. It's money for jam.

LOVE watching your Vids Matt. teach us much regarding Car market in the UK vis Australia. So sad to see RUST is such a big problem over there. Engine/gbox wear is the big prob here. just subbed. and please keep them coming A BIG BIG THANK YOU
Had 2 of these over the years, both rotted out underneath and needed back axle replacing. The XS model were great specc and very comfortable but very bouncy
Plenty more tat to come! Lovely jubbly!
I had one of these in Seoul in 2004. It was a diesel, and whilst very comfy for such a vehicle, it wouldn't pull the skin off rice pudding.
This generation of Sorento was very popular in Greece. Some people still use them, despite the fact that they are quite old. Most of them are very dependable and all of them are rust free. I was socked by the amount of rust..
Greece is surrounded by salty water you would think they rust there too, maybe the climate is good.
Your in hot Greece, here in miserable England everything rusts...fast!!!
Great cars. Fuel tank is a common issue
Cooper really good tyre, the at3 is excellent, I love that shape Sorento looks a bit like the M Class.
Matt , never ceases to amaze me , how much does a can of waxoil cost , how much is 5 litres of oil and a few filters ??
We are such a throwaway society here in the UK , normally throwing away cash
Mad
Keep up the good work fella
I, as an American, can't get over how little yall value used cars over there. Maybe not this specific car. But Matt has reviewed so many that should have a long life left and would be worth thousands if not over 10k if the car was here in the US. So I gotta admit at least when it comes to cars. Yall do seem throwaway. The American car fleet is older than ever before last I heard. My car will be 24 this year. Older than me lol, it would definitely be worth several thousands still.
I can’t help watching these, but I know I’m sick
I really enjoyed this video. You also highlighted the plight of all small business owners: that to run a business successfully you have to go to extra lengths to bring in revenue in order to pay the ever increasing costs of running that business. And for that you have my respect.
my current 2006 Sorento still runs well (except for the occasional coolant leak). The best part is theres no rust since i live somewhere in south east asia
Don't think i'll get bored of these..
Looking forward to seeing more tat on your channel.
(I am so glad Auto-Correct did NOT kick in.) 😉
Love the gift that keeps on giving line 😂😂😂😂😂👍bloody excellent...more more more please 🙏
The left side wasn't bad. Could've lasted a couple more years. Or you could maybe try to mend it. The right side though was properly gone. Such a shame. It really looks great from the outside.
The gift that keeps on giving. your right. cheaper to buy a new car then get the old one fixed.
Just curious what line of work/lifestyle requires anyone driving a regular car for 25k miles?. Genuine query.
Taxi driver?
It’s only 500 miles a week. 40 miles a day commuting to work 5 days a week and the rest zooming all over the country visiting family and friends. It soon adds up!
Had an 08 plate that was a great tow car until it suffered the dreaded fuel tank delamination at 10 years old, Kia did fix it but it was never ever the same. Cut my losses and got rid.
There's loads of life left in that Kia for a good DIY welder.
Dont hate on people doing something on their own. Not everyone can afford to do it professionally
Your right, we all love these ones where you pick up these wee gems !!
Spot on review as always. Thank you & keep them coming. 👍🏻
Above all a very honest grown up review..
I have a habit, which is as the titles roll in your introduction I open autotrader to see what we are looking at. First car for sale was yours. I must stop spoiling some of these for myself.
Great Vids the Winter salt-laden slush on the Roads makes on hell of a mess the sad end to many Best of British classic cars and imports.
First time I’ve laughed out loud today, thanks! Good luck with it.
I love these type of videos❤
Seen these with multiple moose hunters. Cheap 4x4 with pretty rugged possibilities do make it a great buy
Matt. I always love your honesty. Keeps me coming back. And the rust holes 😅
Love these videos ! Please keep them coming.
I hope Matt - current Kia's don't have thesr rust problems in the future! As today's Kia's have a good write up at the moment.
Had an XS on a 2003 plate….. 9 months old ..traded it in for civic new in 2016…car was just starting to need big money spending on it . Fuel tank just started to leak when i was picking up my new car later in the week…i had to renew the turbo on it …
Loving the tat videos Matt,thanks.
Good video as always..Never seen rust on parts of body and most of the chassis as bad as that on a vehicle for many years.
who'd buy a nearly 20 yo spares or repairs for £1250 ??? £300-500 is more where it's at. You win some, you lose some, as you say.
This was a fun episode. I noticed that when you braked, the resultant pulsing reminded me of the stanky leg syndrome in those wild pig extermination videos from America. A damn shame this car wasn't looked after properly. It's a very attractively shaped vehicle. Some owners have more money than sense.
Superb analysis and comedic final explanation 👍 😂
That only Northerners 🏴 possess in 🇬🇧
(I'm from Kensington and Chelsea, in London originally.)
Well done lad! 👍
Thanks! 😃
South Korean Lada Niva. And a collander by the sound of it. Hope you find something to actually weld to. Sadly Mig doesn't stick to fresh air. I'd wave it goodbye post haste.
