This video is a conversation with Dr. Howard Rosman, the longtime pediatrician serving the Williamsburg Hasidic community. When I first heard about him from his granddaughter, I spoke to some people in the community to ask them what they knew of him, and it was soon clear that he was a beloved icon in this community.
My aim in this interview was to learn how this very devout community approaches modern medicine. Do they vaccinate? Do they take all medicine - what about kosher concerns? What about genetics? There was so much to talk about. The only reason the interview wasn't longer was because we had enormous technical issues which despite my best ability, we could not solve, and Dr. Rosman had a really muffled audio reception.
I want to clarify that my aim in this interview is not to debate approaches to health and medicine. While I understand that there are now very contentious and heartfelt views on the topic, and I believe the debate is legitimate, this is not the place for that debate. My goal here was simply to hear the insights from a community doctor about the population he served. I would appreciate if you could take this into consideration when you leave a comment.

@@shirleyjhaney1041 I think the algorithm automatically "hides" videos that cover vaccines and similar controversial issues. I took the words vaccines out of the title and the video picked up by a lot. I might be wrong; it's impossible to know for sure. But the algorithm definitely deleted a bunch of vaccine-related comments.
Apropos of Yiddish, here’s a funny story: my nephew does not speak Yiddish, but is a very committed, orthodox Jew who knows huge amounts of Torah - but not in Yiddish. He became a dentist in Monroe, and he was worried about being able to communicate with the children, but it turned out that it was no problem: the dental assistant, an African-American woman,
who had been working there many years, was fluent in Yiddish. So she translated for him!

Dr. Rosman was my pediatrician all the years! What a mentch, beloved by the entire community! Just a few years after Dr. Rosman retired, the office closed down.
My uncle was a dentist in Williamsburg. He speaks Yiddish very well and one of the kids once said ‘Mame de goy redt yiddish’.
There’s a lot of litvish people in their 60’s or older that speak yiddish because their parents were from Europe and spoke a lot of yiddish at home.
It's happened to me too! Hasidic kids associate Yiddish with one of them.

Such a lovely man. I just told my husband about his pediatric practice. My husband retired as a physician 2 1/2 years ago. This man reminded him of himself and why he went into medicine. Both Dr. Rosman and my husband found a "calling" in caring for patients. What a gift Dr. Rosman was to his patients! Thank you for sharing his experience with us.

This was my pediatrician! At that point in time, parents didnt question the doctors much. The trust wasnt broken like its been these days... I didnt watch yet, but i believe things changed a lot in the last 5-10 years

@FriedaVizelBrooklyn it was such a wonderful interview! His little speech difference alone brought back such wonderful memories. His tales about the nurses and staff...I can still see them. They were all so dedicated and respectful. My mother would always point out that he's a big Talmud chachom, his semicha certificate hung in the office proudly. Regarding the more controversial topic, he seems to still be very old school. People question things now and just saying "I learned its safe " just doesn't fly anymore. Great interview!

I am 72 years old and when I was growing up especially in the larger cities it was common to encounter people who were born in the US but whose first language wasn't English. It wasn't just Hasidic Jews. I went to a Catholic high school and children of Eastern European immigrants often had strong accents, especially children of Ukrainians and Poles.
My daughters Hispanic playgroup assistant speaks a great Yiddish it’s hilarious
I work as a bookkeeper in a very large pediatric dental facility that serves the ultra orthodox community, and all the staff, most of them are not religious, claim that they love treating the children of that community

I don't agree with him about vaccine safety, especially giving several at once, but he is a product of his training which influences his belief system. I am a psychologist. It took me years to recognize the illegitimacy of the diagnostic manual so I understand.
I know, giving several a once makes no sense. If there's an adverse reaction, there's no way to know which one caused it. Besides why overwhelm the body like that? A lot of medical doctors seem to look at not becoming deathly ill due to something as that thing being 'safe'. I wish they'd get a more holistic training but hey, those don't bring in the big bucks

I think Hasidim are nice to their doctors if they are jewish or not. But not turning up to appointments is a very in-character cultural thing. Similar to turning up to things 2 hours late, which is a very Hasidic thing. You play fast and loose with time!

Great interview Frieda. We were wondering about how the community takes care of its health insurance needs. It seems the local economy is mostly small businesses and it would be a burden to provide corporate health insurance. And with such large families….
Thanks - I worked for a Hasidic insurance firm for 15 years and people were breaking under the pressure of medical insurance cost. People who had Medicaid had it good.

Absolutely loved this Frieda. Just another example of one of the good people who makes the world a better place.
To me, I find the whole vaccination controversy such a curiosity as a Jew. The Torah and especially Halacha place such a high priority on life and safeguarding and protecting life. Most people are unaware that even Shulchan Aruch requires one to be physically healthy and to get regular exercise and eat right. It teaches that one cannot serve G-d properly when one is sick physically, mentally or emotionally!
My parents raised us with regular medical care including vaccinations to prevent illness. I did the same thing with my own children as a responsible, loving and caring parent.
I can only assume that people who avoid vaccinations simply do not understand that they are beneficial to us all.
Historically speaking, the world prior to vaccinations was a much harder world with much more human suffering.
Even looking today around the world, you can plainly see that those areas without accessible vaccination programs for all manner of illnesses suffer greatly for it. The quality of human life in such places is diminished greatly, the length of life shortened and mortality rates increased.
Don’t wanna start a whole debate but just so you’re aware since you’re quoting the shulchan aruch - the shulchan Aruch actually says not to trust any medical business or personnel who stand to gain profit from your health issues.
The peleh yoetz says even if 99 doctors say to take a medicine/treatment and there is 1 dr who says not to.. the Halacha is to sit and not do anything.
There are many halachic sources that suggest the opposite of what you are saying. Again not saying this to start debate but ושמרתם מאד את נפשותיכם would suggest actually not to vaccinate since v’s themselves cause many health issues- more so than the actual disease they are trying to prevent you from catching.
So it’s not such a simplistic answer and believe me the parents who choose not to, do so after avid research (info is not so available anymore) or after they or someone they love was v-injured. More likely those that do vax do so without fully understanding the benefits of natural health, unfortunately.
When moshiach comes the world will know the truth. Until then, continue on your path and do what you believe is correct just love everyone equally and don’t let t he hot debate of v’s create any ill feelings towards those who differ in opinion ❤ 🙏
As someone who is hesitant about vaccines, I can assure you that no one is against inoculations. The issue is with the fillers (heavy metals and edible food), the lack of accountability that the vaccine companies get that doesn't give them any push to make it safer (the can't be sued for any injuries incurred due to vaccines). There's more but these are just a couple of reasons people think twice

Such a lovely man! Such a good doctor! The community he served was so blessed. Concerning the discussion on vaccines. It seems he was talking about a different era when most people trusted docyors and accepted official advice. I would like to know more about the Hasidic communitiy' s response to the covid vaccine scenario. It was during this time that so many people' s attitudes changed. This lovely doctor was not working then, so no wonder he didn't talk about that period of history.

I suppose it would depend on who that community looks to f or rabbinical advice. I live in a haredi community where most do not vax, and I believe close to absolutely no one vaxed for covid.
Then again, I know a lot of haredi women in other communities actually ran to get the covid vax if they were pregnant then ה ישמור
So I would imagine it greatly depends on which community you live in. It seems even within the Hasidic and haredi worlds this is also a hot topic for debate

yes, I remember him, he was my doctor for a bit in Monroe. Can’t believe he passed so young.
I'm in Canada even non religious Muslim and Jews are vitamin D deficient most Canadians are. It is the climate here, dark and dreary winters for six months or more don't help. As a nurse(gentile), I worked in the Hasidic community when I first came to Canada. I live in the community. I did house visits. It is true the women speak exceptional English some also speak French as we are in Montreal. The men speak primarily Yiddish and English with a non Canadian accent and no French. It felt funny because the women sounded Canadian and the men didn't even if they are born and raised here. I found the doctor's discussion on medication about certain ingredients a fascinating point. I'm a vegan and I had dilemmas on accepting to take some meds that were not vegan. It was an orthodox Jewish pharmacist who told me the same thing as this doctor. I am taking it not eating it and right now not all prescriptions have vegan friendly options.

Very insightful. Paints such a different pic than is portrayed in today’s media in NYC. Granted he practices medicine in a different time period than today , but still very interesting. Just my personal opinion I think NYC in general portrays the Hasidic community about 1 step from being totally nuts. Just my personal opinion from visiting NYC about 9 times a year for over 5 years now

I worked at a thriving private insurance brokerage firm for 15 years and most of our clients were Hasidic.

Why I didn’t know what he was saying?
First of all, everyone has different ways of explaining the community because there are different perspectives and experiences. And documenting valuable testimony is not the same as me saying what I know. Anyway, I might know some things, but I surely don’t know what it’s like to be a doctor in this community. How would I know that?
This kind of ethnographic work isn’t about what I know… it’s about knowing which voices are worth documenting.

Just want to point out that orthodox is not the same as Hasidic. The secular press refers to Hasidism as ultra orthodox, but this is a misnomer. I grew up in Satmar Williamsburg and went to orthodox Hebrew day schools. I won’t get into the finer points but these are very different groups.
Neither avoid medical care, though.
I’m so confused; how does someone who grew up in Satmar Williamsburg go to Orthodox Hebrew day school? I’m guessing you weren’t actually Satmar?
@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn I was not satmar. My family was trapped in the neighborhood when it changed over to satmar after the war (they came as refugees and took over the neighborhood; they often tried to buy our house but we were too poor to move out like most everyone else had). My family was not religious at all, and I’m sure you have some idea of how we were treated. I was sent to orthodox day school when my mom realized the local public school was far too dangerous. I was able to get scholarships to yeshivahs which would not have been available to more appropriate secular private school.
It’s a very weird story and I never knew another human being who had anything similar happen.
It was not ideal, and it gave me an outsider's inside view of so much I won’t get into here. I still remember being made to sit in the back of the boro park bus back and forth to school every day.
Why is Ultra Orthodox a misnomer? In the Israeli press the word חרדי (Charedi) is used. In the secular American press, Ultra Orthodox is used. Ultra Orthodox makes sense. Like the Orthodox, the Ultra Orthodox follow Jewish law but the Ultra Orthodox go beyond; they are "Ultra".
@@stephenfisher3721 not getting into a more extensive explanation, but the tl;dr is chasidism is a sect based on Jewish mysticism and and is its own thing with its own culture and laws, formed in reaction and opposition to the main body of orthodoxy, and if you’re interested in more details, you can find them.
I replied and that reply is gone, so if you care, ask whoever you respect who knows the difference. Last attempt, Mysticism and populism and messianic worship of specific modern human rebbes is not orthodoxy in Judaism and orthodoxy is not on the same spectrum as Hasidism, it’s not a matter of degree of observance, it’s central differences in ideology and purpose. That’s my last attempt here, and shalom.

I grew up Haredim in Mea Shearim and almost no one Is vaccinated. Against anything. And that’s not just because of the views of the state of Israel. Rather objections from rabbi.

wow i did not know this. Very interesting indeed! I think maybe Mea Shearim is a bit like some extremist groups in the Hasidic community, in the sense that they are more antagonistic and combative with the culture they are embedded in. I’m thinking Naturei Karta or Bnei Yoel style American Hasidim.

It was extremely disappointing to hear this doctor invalidate people's injuries. I was a nurse and saw so much injury. Extremely sad.
Hi Frieda, thanks for this great interview. Chassidic anti vaxxer here. I totally agree with him. Most of us anti vaxxers, including myself, were vaccinated when we were kids, started motherhood vaccinating, & had an awakening either by doing independent research, witnessing the harm done to our kids, or both. Unfortunately, people like myself are still a very small minority in the chassidishe community. For those that are new to this controversy, the book Dissolving Illusions by Suzanne Humphries, would be a great place to start. While this doctor did seem to be sincere, he was indoctrinated by Pharma funded medical school. I pray that more of my chassidic brethren and all of humanity wakes up to the terrible deception that we have been victim of. Hashem created the human body perfect. When we try to alter his creation by injecting perfectly healthy kids with toxins in order to "protect" them, we end up suffering the consequences.

You have a great point. However, that's not the entire picture. Hashem created medicines and the vaccines as well. Would you not treat any illness because our bodies are perfect? It's more nuanced than being totally for it or totally against it
I was an ED nurse turned anti vaxxer. I saw so much injury it's crazy. Unvaxd kids just do not come to hospital bcoz they rarely get sick. Unfortunately most in the system are brainwashed and keep harming where there is already harm. So many staff sick and their own children even sicker. It's mind boggling.
O hope he was not pushing the Covid shot on these kids - let alone the adults - sorry but I have no respect for doctors that do/did
