Fun fact, the alias the Doctor uses in this episode : Dr James Mccrimon, is actually the name of a companion of the second Doctor, an 18th century Soctsman, who is one of the longest serving companions, being present in every story of the second Doctor's run except the very first.
Didn't know if someone already mentioned this, but when David Tennent switches to his Scottish accent... He is actually speaking his native accent! He cultivated the Queen's British accent for this and his other many tv and film roles!
Queen Victoria lost her husband (Prince albert) very young and she missed him terribly... she mourned him for the rest of her long life and always wore black till the day she died in rememberance... hence her speech about "the other side"...
If you didn't know the Koh-I-Noor is a real diamond with a very interesting story and surrounded by legends, used several times in fiction, like in an Agatha Christie novel or in the Assassin's Creed universe, I find it really fascinating :)
This episode isn’t my favourite by any means, but I love how horrifying the episode is, from the direction, to the colour palette of the visuals, to the sound effects of the bones snapping during the werewolf transformation to the incredible VFX which still hold up today in my opinion. Very underrated episode!
whenever i rewatch this episode i can't stop thinking about how the doctor and rose flirted and vibed with each other so hard that they ended up triggering their own banishment and creation of a whole institute against them. bc they were having a bit too much fun lmao
To be fair this isn’t even his accent, he’s putting on an affected Scottish accent compared to his actual one. So he’s a Scottish actor playing a British sounding time lord putting on a fake Scottish accent
Doctor Who has got the best speeches. Over time, you'll notice, in real life you end up in situations and you'll use Doctor Who quotes and get frustrated cause no-one understands them. Ten years ago, my daughter had that problem in college and after a few months she sighted and asked if anyone of her college friends would finaly want to watch this show and a guy said he would if she would, in exchange, watch Stargate. They both loved the other ones favourite show but there was one thing they loved more: each other. They go dressed to comic cons as characters from Doctor Who and one time, 6 years ago, he proposed to her in front of a Tardis, obviously their wedding had a lot of Doctor Who themes and other nerdy gizmo's. (and instead of a loud danceparty, they filled the dancefloor with tables so we all could play boardgames, best wedding ever).
Fun fact - Pauline Collins, who plays Queen Victoria, has actually been in DW before. Back in 1967 she guest starred in a 2nd Doctor story called The Faceless Ones, and was actually offered the opportunity to stay on as a companion by the producers. She had other stage commitments, though, so had to turn them down. Also, the alias the Doctor uses in this (James McCrimmon) was the name of a well loved 2nd Doctor companion (who was also in that story which Pauline Collins featured in). He was a Scottish Highlander from the time of the Jacobite Rebellion, and was one of the most loved Classic Who companions. This is a great episode, and I actually like how Queen Vic pulls the Doctor and Rose up over how flippantly they behaved.
Yes, David wears classic Converse All-Star sneakers (Sandshoes in the UK, apparently) and they look pretty slick with a plaid suit. I know, I'm wearing that exact thing right now.
IIRC apparently they were going to give him boots, but Tennant pushed for these shoes because they were easier to move around fast in and he thought it would make it easier for child fans to recreate the look.
I love Pauline Collins as Queen Victoria. Well, I love Pauline Collins, period. She was wonderful in "Quartet", with Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly. And fantastic as the title character in "Shirley Valentine".
Glad you liked this! This is a much better story and I think it would have been a better opener than what we got (“New Earth”), and you’re right, the pay off down the line is fantastic, but you also have a lot of good stories ahead of you until we get to the finale, so sit back and buckle up as it’s going to be an amazing ride! Fun fact: when David Tennant was using a Scottish accent in this story, it was actually his own speaking voice. Tennant is Scottish but for whatever reason, when he was cast as the 10th Doctor, the show runner Russell T. Davies, wanted him to adopt an English accent! This was a strange request because, when you hear Tennant’s real voice (as you did), it wasn’t difficult to understand at all!
The Doctor suffers from a superhero paradox like most others. He is the saviour of Earth and yet with his presence comes the danger. The best way to look at it is that although The Doctor fails, and people die from his choices, him not choosing would be the end of Earth. For him it takes every day, every moment to stop Earth and humans and even aliens from dying out, and yet it would only take a single day without him to undo it all.
I remember when Character Options released wave after wave of the Doctor Who Werewolf action figure; we ended up with so many in our store, we had to do a Toys for Tots donation drive to get rid of them all. They were large; thicker than the Dalek packaging.
Kung fu monks, werewolves and Queen Victoria - why not - absolutely anything is possible in DW and as completely crazy as it is... Somehow it does work 😉. The connection in between the whole series is a lot more pronounced as you think. There is a great amount of hints to Classic Who right back to the beginning in the 60s. You don't need to know as you said... but for everyone who does, these Easter eggs are fantastic. After going through New Who I went back to watch Classic and again re-watching the New Series - I knew there were refences but only then realising how many there actually are hidden. The main storyline, so to speak is actually continuous from 1863, which is mindblowing when you think about it!
Just a fun episode all around, because who doesn't love a bit of werewolf from time to time? I love that Queen Victoria makes them a Lord and Lady, and then banishes them right afterwards - not to mention the gossip about the current royal family at the time, lol, and add on the fact that Prince Andrew said he can't sweat and wolves can't either!
Great reaction - I love watching Dr Who with you. I'm not sure if it's clear in the edit, but it leaves the viewer uncertain as to whether Queen Victoria has been bitten by the Werewolf. This feeds into the real life 'bad blood' within the British Royal Family. Victoria was a carrier of haemophilia and passed it on to her children, so RTD was playing with the idea that it was werewolfism rather than haemophilia - which would explain a lot to be honest 🤣
Headcanon with a lot of fans is that Rose and the Doctor had some sex between New Earth and this episode. The flirting is wild and any kind of person space has left the chat. I absolutely love this episode. Billie and David’s chemistry on set was insane in this one.
Back in the days of serial programming you could drop into any TV show, almost anywhere, and just watch. If there were story arcs they were really long, like over an entire season, but were only tied in using a few of them. Go pull up any episode of Star Trek, TOS, TNG, Voyager, DS-9, any of them, it’s serialized TV you can just drop in on. Hollywood, and others, have lost the ability to tell a story in 42 minutes, they have to have 8 hours over 3 movies or 9 episodes.
Love how it's fun to watch you react to episodes we've forgotten about. Not big on this one, but enjoyed the reaction :-) Also I love that you pick up on things and remember them and will follow those threads thru the series. Ah, the Face of Bo... Any chance you'd turn subtitles on of the show?
This seems to be my favorite episode. I guess, I’ve watched it a lot. Anyway the whole thing with Torchwood opened a can of worms for me. I wanted to find more lore and started cherry picking episodes from the “old series” back then I had the old Netflix account were I had the DVD sent to me. I guess you gotta sign up for some odd streaming service to get them now. Great reaction, thanks
Rose and the Doctor were goofing around a lot and not taking the loss of life all that seriously. There is heavy flirtation energy here and some inappropriate behavior (at least for the time they're visiting). Another episode where no one gets into period-appropriate clothing. Mistletoe does keep werewolves away (I mean, it's supposed to). There's an interesting anthology called _Wolfsbane and Mistletoe,_ although it is unrelated to _Doctor Who._ I enjoyed this episode.
don't know how much you're actually considering mistletoe, lol, but just in case! It's highly toxic to dogs and cats! And probably many other animals too! That's probably where the idea that it's a werewolf repellant comes from in folklore.
Definitely have no plans of stopping anytime soon. I mean, I started watching for Karen Gillan so you can be sure there's zero chance of quitting before I even get to her story. Plus I already bought the entire series and most of Sarah Jane Adventures with plans to purchase Torchwood in a few weeks so... ☺️ This is my favorite thing I currently watch on the channel and as Richard pointed out, DW is actually on the higher end of my weekly views so that's a bonus.
@@CasualNerdReactions If you enjoy 'being a kid' in front of your favourite show you're going to love the Sarah-Jane Adventures, that's the perfect spirit. (And if you enjoy 'being an adult' in front of your favourite show then Torchwood is right up your street too!)
2:10 - Chris... you're thinking of "Bingo card", not "bucket list".... (just nitpicking a little. ) 14:45 - Torchwood was started in (as they say in the episode) 1879. Its job was to be prepared for "non-Earthly" threats, of which Catherine thought the Doctor MIGHT be (even though he saved her life), or might become. I won't give spoilers, except to say that Torchwood's history does get further development throughout the series (not meaning "season", but the entire series). If you haven't watched any "Classic" Dr. Who (pre-2000s), I'll go ahead and say that a character from back then will be referenced at some point (I just won't say who, or when). That's about the best I can do with helping you understand this, without getting into spoiler territory.
Loved your reaction. The torchwood stories - the last one especially are missable. They are more adult and while some good acting and good peril it has some pretty terrible final stories.
I didnt like the silly giggling childishness of Rose and the Doctor. Well, Rose can be young and willful. But the Doctor? Didn’t work for me. I liked a lot of the episode but not that bit. As far as the Torchwood spin off series I find it overall a misery. Very different feel…darker and more “adult”…than Who. I found it depressing and it doesn’t feel like it’s from the same universe as Who. Some people love it but it’s not my cuppa tea. You don’t need to watch it to follow along with doctor who.

Love this episode. Rose trying to get the Queen to say ‘ we are not amused’ is hysterical. Plus it opens up Torchwood!

I love it when the Doctor visits historical figures along with cosmic craziness.
Love that David Tennant got to speak in his own accent in this one.

Nah Tennant's real voice is a lot rougher and deeper. He's still putting on a different accent, it's just closer to his own.
Nice to hear DT use his own accent in this episode 🎩

So totally agree with you, one of the best parts of this series is the threads woven thru the stories.
Torchwood anagram for doctor who 🤯
Oh man, I remember this episode, but I remembered it as being further down in the season, like the 4th or 5 episode. Crazy how memory works XD
Torchwood...is an anagram for Doctor Who.

Good episode, let down by Rose's obsession with getting the queen to say that she's not amused. I don't blame her for banishing Rose.
