Hi, I'm Chris! Welcome to my channel. I react to movies & tv shows hoping to represent what it's really like to experience them for the first time. If you enjoy, you can support me by liking the video, subscribing to the channel, and letting me know your thoughts in the comments.
So we meet Martha Jones! This episode really demonstrated the strong qualities she possesses that drew the doctor to her. Plus we had alien rhinos on the moon! What’s not to love.

The line "Judoon platoon upon the Moon" was written specifically to fuck with David Tennant, cause his natural Scottish accent makes the -oon sound tricky to pronounce when using an English accent.
The same reason why they named the Ood in the previous series!
How rude! Seriously though, the set with David Tennant sounded like such a fun place to work.
4:40 Martha’s theme has to be one of my favourite pieces of music
A platoon of space rhinos abducts a building of people to the moon but the actual big bad is a little old lady with a straw. Only Doctor Who could make that bonkers premise work.
Fun fact: That same actress also played Leslie Tiller in Hot Fuzz, where she was the one who died with something stuck into her throat.
@@WolfHreda "Leslie Tiller was F*CKING murdered!"
I hate comparing companions but I found Martha a breath of fresh air for the show, hugely underrated in her time. Wonderfully competent character
God, I hated her at the time. Looking back I think it was all the pining for the Doctor and jealousy for Rose that put me off. These days I like her episodes a lot more, though.
Martha is such an underrated companion in such an underrated season
I love this series and it’s got the best rated episode of new who ‘ Blink’ and the conclusion double episode is huge favourite.
How do you know, this season averaged 7.5 million viewers and you get the opinions of a handful of obsessives who believe they own the show. You can draw no conclusions from opinions on social media or even rating sites. I doubt there is more than a couple of hundred in the sample that's less than 0.003% of the audience.
@@fayesouthall6604 Good lord, he pleaded for exactly these kinds of spoilers to not be made into comments...did you even watch his intro???? Don't suppose everyone in this thread would be willing to delete their comments on the off chance he hasn't read it yet?
Agreed
Exactly, don't mention the episode names @@joshuathompson2404
People who hint spoilers thinking they're so clever, ban 'em
Agreed. Or get a mod to prescreen comments.
These are the worst kind.
Or, instead of banning people and pre-screening people, relax. Calm down. Chill. Stop trying to control every word people say.
People get enthusiastic for the things they love. Sometimes they go to far.
On the other hand i'm tired of people coming down and telling others what they can and cannot say. I've been in reaction communities that were so bad you couldn't say anything. Anything outside of "That was an episode, great reaction!" was "spoiler" territory. Completely snuffing conversation between the reacters and the reactees.
Some people are not as subtle as they like to think. I know that I've been guilty of it in the past, we should not be too harsh on those that slip up but also we have to be careful when commenting episode details
@@StevenJShow So we can never truly enjoy a blind reaction because people get so excited they knowingly do something they know will literally spoil the series for the rest of us? And you expect us to be happy and accept that? Get the heck out of here with that nonsense. It sounds like you had a bad time at the other reaction channel for not respecting boundaries, just like you are doing now.
"I want to see a Timelord nursery" with the Time Tots - they are officially called that.😂
Martha is a character that I didn't fully appreciate in the moment. But in hindsight, she is part of what I consider some of the best episodes ever written. Enjoy!!
I love Martha Jones and Freema Agyeman. This episode is a great introduction to her.
11:00 WAIT... Mister Stoker? I just made that connection for the first time. The guy whose blood gets drunk is named after the author of Dracula
Oh yeah! I never realised either.
I love how much you appreciate the music!! The fans loved it so much they started releasing seasonal soundtracks. The more you listen, the more layers and nuances you notice. Murray Gold is truly a musical genius!
Agreed! The music for me is like a third character to the whole series. Incredible music score throughout the Murray Gold's run.
I love Martha. She’s great. I love all the new companions tbh.
I have so much affection for Martha as a character. Freema Agyeman had such a lot to contend with from all the Billy Piper stans, who showed such resentment to her, as to her placement as the new companion. But many who doubted at first have come to realise decades later how much she has become one of the most beloved companions in all of Dr.Who, both Classic and NuWho!
"Don't confirm, don't deny, just let it lie." That's a very fun rhyme, actually.
I love Martha's time on the show. She doesn't have all amazing episodes, but she does have some absolute gems.
And I also loved her adventurous spirit from the get-go.
Martha Jones is my jam!! Absolutely adore her.
Same. I love her so much. I love that she has such humanistic values to her character.
Yes, I was all in with her immediately.
So I love this episode so much and it’s really cool because my university is where they filmed it. So everytime I go into my uni library I’m walking into “the hospital” waiting area and where Martha and doctor hide (behind the plant) is visible from the ground floor. I always get so happy
Another great reaction Chris. Thanks so much for sharing with us. I hate that it is necessary these days, but i do suggest you find a moderator to help preview comments or delete the most offending. Its sad even in this video there are several idjits giving mention to later season details. Good luck, my friend.
"if you didn't know, rain usually goes up...." 🤣
This episode always gets rather overlooked but from a technical pov it’s quite an impressive bit of scriptwriting. Introducing a new companion to a returning audience. Introducing the concept of The Doctor and the TARDIS to a new audience. Balance that with a mystery, action and “monsters”. It’s a super tight script and it never really drops off or lulls at any point. All done in 45 minutes to boot! Some of those Netflix or Disney+ feature length premiers could only wish!
Agreed. This is one of my favorite episodes and one of the places where it's a good jumping-on point to start the series. The Doctor has to introduce himself to her and thus the audience too.
The doctor uses the name John Smith because back in early 70s he was stuck on earth for an era and had to adopt a human name and that was the most common in the UK at the time so he chose it...
This was the first episode of Doctor Who I ever saw so I watched this season as it aired then went back and watched the first two after while I waited for season four to come out so Martha and Ten are my favorites just because they are how I was introduced to this world so I will always have a huge soft spot for them.
This is a GREAT introduction to the show.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the reaction to the doctor walking up to martha and pulling off his TIE omg i laughed so hard at that
So... there was this one reactor, she is so lovely, and she got spoiled for this one particular clip, and of course due to reading comments in her videos. Not gonna lie, those who spoilt it tends to be some overexciting fans that can't wait to keep a secret much longer, but this in turn, does make the "suprise" reaction, more bland. So what I will say is this... those who loves to just commented on certain stuffs, please don't (I want to say much more mean stuff but it's fasting month, so I'm trying my best to keep my composure, but uuuu I really want to arghhhhh to them).
Also, try to have moderators in your comments. I don't know what moderators mean, but apparently there are really good at thier job~
Exactly. I hate it when a new reactor comes around and people act like this.
There's a new one called Emme and in the first or second episode reaction, she revealed that while she's aware there's multiple Doctors, she's not aware of how or why. Now, even on Patreon, she hasn't yet reached 9's regeneration. Despite this, you can imagine there's a few people out there who casually mention regeneration. Yes, I get its an integral part of the show and what makes it unique, but we need to remember that not everyone would know about it.
The companion is usually seen as the eyes for the audience watching the show for the first time. Rose was the first companion of the revival? The viewer's reaction to the Doctor regenerating should match hers. If you get the regeneration spoiled, then the connection is lost. Not only that, but even saying that Eccleston only did one series is still a spoiler
@@thepandorica1660 Emme is so cool~ I didn't join her Patreon, but didn't think that people would commented in there as well...
Also, that last sentence, so trueee, like, arghhh, please don't tell people.
A thing about me is that, I know Doctor Who in late 2014, I only discovered cause I got recommendation from the Doctor Who Official RUclips Channel, and I just watched those clip without knowing the term spoilers to begin with. Mind you, since I watched that in 2014, you can tell there are already like major "episodes" that can be considered as one of a kind. But I got spoilt, due to it being available as RUclips videos. So, everytime I see new reactors, I wish that they will not be as unfortunate as I did, as I want their reaction to be genuine, as I did not get to experience that~
So many people right here under this video casually talking about future companions, how much they do don't like episodes or seasons (like they didn't hear what Chris said yet again at the start of this video), or pointing out things that are deliberately subtle.
I despair.
It was a surprise to me. It’s hard to avoid people knowing now, but if they can, it’s gold.
Martha is my favorite companion
Mine too.
Martha hearing both hearts, yet others in the hospital not picking up on it, made me think the doctor can temporarily stop one or slow it. Or maybe he just sonics the stethoscope and messes it up. I really liked Martha in this. Great intro. She is very smart.
Identical cousins - the premise of The Patty Duke Show
"When cousins are two of a kind!" I loved that show as a teen.
Mr Stoker is killed by someone drinking his blood 😅 talk about irony!
Russell T Davies apparently wrote a lot of this episode because David Tennant struggled to say -oon without slipping back into his Scottish accent. Therefore Russell made him say Judoon platoon upon the moon.
I also think this is the first appearance of the blue tennant suit
Bram would appreciate it.
@@fayesouthall6604 i bet there is someone in the world who does what she does absorbing blood
I love Martha.
Anne Reid plays the Plasmavore. She has called herself a "jobbing" actor and said usually people seem to think she "acts better with a pan in [her] hand." Her career really took off more as she got older, and this seems like it would have been a fun part for her. She co-starred with the great Derek Jacobi in _Last Tango in Halifax_ about two older people who reconnect on social media years after liking each other as kids. I think you might enjoy that show.
And yes, the music keeps on getting better, while the storylines become more Epic...
there are certain Tracks where, thinking about it, gives my instant goosebumbs.
I adore how you appreciate the music. Thank you!
11:16 The moment this scene, with this music, kicks in. Always gives me chills. You're in for quite a fun season mate.
If you’re a fan of Murray Gold’s music on the show, I urge you to do a reaction to Doctor Who Proms 2008, a superb concert of all the incidental music accompanied by clips from the series you have watched so far. It’s amazing to see how the audience reacts to the surprises that they see on the stage! David and Freema are the hosts and you will LOVE it! You can find it elsewhere on RUclips.
I had the same idea, but I would advise to wait after this series. Same as the other Doctor Who Proms, they are amazing, but always wait to avoid *spoilers*
Just wanted to remind the Britons that both Proms sessions are up on BBC Iplayer.
When the wind blows against a skyscraper when it rains, it does actually rain up 😊
Martha is so underrated I love her sm ❤
"Planet Zofirax" Zofirax is a cold sore cream. They had an advert where a Motorcycle courier kept not taking her helmet off, until the last few frames.
Say hello to “Martha jones” 😁😁😁😁💯👍👍👍
Welcome aboard, Ms Jones! Yay! She's such a good companion!
An excellent episode that really helped show Martha's qualities!
Ahh! I actually really love this series! Such an underrated companion and series in general. Martha is great. ❤️
It took me years to notice that at the start the doctors answers Martha question that she asks with the tie later on and at the end shows her again
Most of the time, composers are under-appreciated but there are some fandoms more than others that appreciate and actively praise the score. GOT fans will scream and collapse and scream and collapse for Ramin Djawadi's work (earned). And Whovians throw credit to Murray Gold constantly and enthusiastically (also earned). Any review or opinion you ever hear of an episode should be considered to have an invisible asterisk that reads: and Murray Gold was a genius as always. I was once flicking through his songs and more than one brought instant tears to my eyes because it was the beautiful heart and soul of an emotional scene or storyline I'd seen on the show. What a talent to be able to harness and bottle that kind of overwhelming emotion.
Martha is the most underrated companion! This series is a banger, you are in for a WILD ride
your explanation of why the rain going up is odd had me dying! 🤣🤣 it was so earnest and unexpected
Yeah!!! I was "ohw, Chris is going to scientific explain why ... oh nevermind" 😂
Thanks Chris! Martha is a great companion, we have some fun adventures ahead.
I must had paid attention to other things, I either totally missed Martha mentioning her cousin as the person we saw the last season, or I keep forgetting that.
Martha is definitely a character that most of us didn’t appreciate at the time. She’s massively underrated imo. Freema Agyeman does a fantastic job! And this is definitely a great season opener! Love the Jadoon! Oh…and Martha’s mom…big fan 😁
For a lot of us, that was our first companion change, and we didn't handle it very well! lol
@@jocelynbunn very true 😂
@jocelynbunn same. First time through I missed rose too much that I didn't appreciate the awesomeness of Martha Jones. Very pleased that she just gets more badass (and hilarious) with each rewatch.
@@jocelynbunnAlas it happens quite a bit, a consequence of the revolving door nature of the show's cast, sometimes a good character struggles to get the appreciation they deserve because they are trapepd in the shadow of their predescesor, both for companions and Doctors.
Martha is amazing
"Lady space vampire Thanos" is a good nickname
We’ve made it to my favourite (modern era)* companion ❤ Yay!!!
*Sarah Jane will forever be my number 1 ❤
I’m also a sucker for the one off (limited) companions like Jackie Tyler in S2 finale! Iconic! I would have loved some more adventures with her 😂
This was the most welcoming season opener. Those who hadn't seen series 1 and 2 got all the Who they needed in one go. 2 hearts, non-human, space travel, time travel and a companion's fleshed out out life contrasting with the little-known Doctor. Anyone can join in here and not feel that they need to do their homework.
"May never be thin again!" [SLOW CLAP]
New Who has a few cases with at least 2 Companions and even a Doctor,
where the actor was in an Episode playing a completely different character bevor becoming their Main Role.
I just know some people are going to have your sarcasm go way over their head "If you didn't know, rain typically goes down, not up." 😂
makes comment sections a nightmare now that nobody knows when someone is joking 😅😭
My kids would go around saying "Barefoot on the Moon" at odd times when they were running around without shoes. I'll never forget telling my son to get some shoes on before going outside and he replied "Well, if the Doctor can be barefoot on the moon, a little cold won't hurt me". He put his shoes on but that was a running joke in our family for a long time.
As you'll gather from the comments, Martha's a much-loved companion. But watching those opening scenes again made me think, this was probably the first time most of us had ever seen Gugu Mbatha-Raw (she plays Tish) and she has gone on to have an extraordinary career. Someone in the casting department had their eye on the ball.
It was Russell, wasn't it? Probably.
I gather RTD really liked Freema Agyeman when she was Adeola. It's interesting to think that if they'd realized that earlier, Adeola might have lived and Agyeman could have been making a return here as a character with that name.
@@HuntingViolets Just trying to hear Annalise saying 'Hello Adeola!' as she gets in the car with Clive. The way she says 'Maaaartha' is very distinctive!
Martha is one of my faves
The Judoon are an amazing creation!
I mentioned on one of your Torchwood videos how Russell T Davies likes to ground his human characters in a believable domestic family setting- and this is what he achieved for Martha in this episode. A very different family dynamic to Rose, Jackie and Mickey - but they are as an important an anchor for Martha.
Just in time for my favourite companion in the modern show. Can't wait for the rest of this season!
10:45 - "Judoon platoon on the moon" was really the writers messing with David Tennant. It was really difficult to say that while hiding his Scottish accent. 🏴😆
Martha is my favourite companion. She got a lot of flack for being new but she's awesome.
I love your reactions 😍 Thanks for sharing. David Tenant is my favorite Doctor. The lifting of his eyebrow when he admitted to not being human and she didn't believe it.
I think it's safe to say this because it's not spoiling anything. I just find it fascinating how he found her. Also, I always wondered how he could do that party trick with the tie. Then I realized it's because she said she saw him on the street with his tie. So it became an event he could go to. Limited to what she said. Nothing more. Very fascinating!
Keep up your fun reactions. 😊
So a few fun facts about two of the actors in this episode. So Freema was in Series 2 in the first part of the finale playing Adiola (which is referenced in a off hand comment) and the lady who plays Martha's mother was also a cat nurse in Series 2.
The man who had his breath sucked out of his body by the plasmavore was named Mr Stoker like Bran Stoker's Dracula. Nice little reference
Chris - there are some really great episodes coming up this series/season, so enjoy!
I’m so glad I came across your channel! I absolutely love your reactions 😊 you’re in for an incredible journey!
20:17 yeah it’s hard comparing first meetings with companions. But this episode for intros is for sure top 3 of my favorites (NuWho) I’m still in season 2 of Classic Who so I can’t wait to meet more companions
16:51 Oh thank goodness, I thought I was the only who had that horror thoughts as well! XD
I hope they were able to use a robot for gathering samples. The site should have been cordoned off too. Let's hope so.
Freema was a minor character killed by a Cyber man in the previous season...this is explained in a giveaway line, explaining the other character as a relative of Martha's 🎩
He notes that in the reaction.
This is a good, fun, bonkers episode that tends to be forgotten about. Glad you enjoyed it!
Sorry to hear about the spoilers. The best rule to tell people about seems to be "don't mention anything in or about any episode after this one".
Been saving up episodes so I could watch your whole Martha series at once! Martha is my fave companion and is vastly underrated!
Edited to add
People didn't like that Martha had feelings for the Doctor, but let's be honest, if David Tennant ran up and snogged you on the first day you met him, you'd catch feelings too! I know I would!
"We might die." "We might not." How To Get Me To Accept A New Companion Immediately 101
Freema Agyeman is the best. Loved her in Doctor Who and Sense8.
this is such a good introduction episode. I must have seen it about 10 times lmao
Not a spoiler but you have seen the face of boe before they mentioned the secret. He was in the second episode of series 1 way before you met Jack
The Jadoon on the Moon looking for a spoon
Companions do set the tone for the series. I find Martha Jones is a very competent companion. Compare and contrast the companions is fine.
Series 3 is where the soundtracks get absolutely brilliant to me, 1 and 2 were good but this is just on another level, I think that series 3 and 4 + the specials have the most varied and creative OSTs of the show, it's peak, the following seasons are wonderful too though not as varied :)
Love her!
Martha is a great but underrated companion, perhaps because Rose was very popular so a hard act to follow.
The “Judoon platoon upon the Moon” line was a deliberate attempt to trip up DT. Apparently “oo” sounds are very difficult for Scottish actors to pronounce without slipping into their native accent. Of course DT nailed it!
It's not a super strong episode... but it does the job of introducing Martha, and her family.
10:30 No! He's NOT Judge Judy and executioner! Lol. I can never hear that phrase and not think of that line anymore!
Same! Every. Single. Time. I'm glad someone else out there had that phrase ruined (or enhanced?) for them!
Yeah we see face of boe twice before the hospital i have a secret episode. In s01e02 they're on the space station at the end of the world and in s01e07 they're on one of the news stories.
He knows that, that’s not part of the spoiler he’s referring to
The Doctor taking his tie off without context as to why will never not be funny.
I've been waiting for this!! Yay 😄
The wait it over!
Me too!
They did a few Doctor Who at the Proms, with a full orchestra but you'll need to wait until the end of season 4 if you don't want spoilers ruclips.net/video/yJ6JpRctnrk/видео.html
Love the reaction video and youve earnt yourself a subscriber
Welcome!
On your note of predisposing opinions, I heavily agree with this and I even argued with a friend years ago to stop discussing their favourite media before I had seen it because I really want to go in as ignorant as possible. I really consider it a spoiler and don't like people trying to sway me towards their preferred view. I don't want to know that the episode just released is massive, or something shocking happens. I want to be shocked by the show, not your lack of self-awareness.
This light be a difference between UK and USA. But I think a lot hospitals now days require you to remove helmets or anything the completely covers your face/head.
Martha isn’t my favorite but I have to admit that she has her moments where she truly shines as a character. I think this series stands out for me mostly because of its brilliantly written and woven plot and I can’t wait to watch you react to it unraveling bit by bit. 😃
i like martha, she is fun and knows her stuff. will be a fun ride. oh the face of bo is me :D
I wouldnt worry all that much about people hyping or bashing episodes to come - there really is no such thing as consensus on opinion on it anyway :D
As a more leaning to classic who fan myself, new who does some fundamental things that I could do without, and yet it also has many episodes that I adore to bits. Its that type of show.
She pronounces her name "FREE-mah ah-JEE-man"

Russel T Davies has a thing for naming characters Smith or Jones. We had Mickey Smith. Over on Torchwood we have Ianto Jones. Here we get Martha Jones no relation. The Doctor's alias John Smith however is long established. As Sarah Jane said when she met the Doctor again but he introduced himself as John Smith "I used to have a friend who sometimes went by that name." He can't always get away with insisting people just call him The Doctor so in those cases he assumes the moniker of the most common and generic name possible John Smith.
"John Smith" was used a lot by Pertwee. Not sure if that happened because he needed a name to actually get the job as UNIT scientific advisor in Spearhead from Space. I have a vague idea that it might have been used by Pat troughton, I'm almost certain he gave that name to the Brig's secretary when he came in to see him in the Five Doctors. But if there's an earlier use than Pertwee's episodes I can't remember it.
@paulhammond6978 yeah it was first used during the Throughton era but Pertwee is most famous for doing it due to the obvious circumstances of his era.
Hello, Judge Renslayer.
Great reaction!
Martha's dad is basically dating a younger version of Jackie Tyler.
Lol Judoon make me think if Sontarans with a different head🎩
that was a joke when he explained rain typically goes down, right?
People need to know.
