We had Econoline travel vans my entire upbringing, can confirm they were legendary! We drove clear across Canada & the U.S. a few times over (summer road trips) and only ever had one breakdown - An accelerator cable. That was on the second van that nearly logged a cool mil km's.
damn, James taking that getting healthy lifestyle to heart. Good to see it, want to see you around for a lot more years doing this stuff. love the podcast too.
I've had more than 10 cars in the past 2 years. From new malibus, to Honda odssey. Never the same model twice. Right now I have a 2006 Chrysler Town and country, and a 1995 ford ecoline 150 conversion. The ford econoline not only runs smoother, but it is quieter, more comfortable and far more powerfu, than ANY other car I've had. It's amazing. Custom interior and all. It's truly amazing.
I shit you not, I've been saving up for a van for 3 years, and I finally got one yesterday! It's a 1996 Ford E250 extended cab with the Ford 300 Inline 6 hahaha. It's got a bed, a solar shower, and solar panels with a battery setup. 120k miles. I'm so happy.
What's crazier is that when you check out Transits in Europe, they come in FWD, RWD, and AWD options. I think Ford is the only brand offering that. Also, there are four (4!) different Transits available in the UK: Transit Courier, Transit Connect, Transit Custom, and Transit Van. It's like... you can get them in any size for any job you want. It's madness!
Had a "brand new at the time" 2018 Ford Transit at my previous job and only 4 months and 15k miles later I loved the van. Comfortable and drove great. Of course a lot of space in the back with racks and shelves.
I learned how to drive in a 1998 E350 conversion van with a 6.8 liter V10 gasoline engine. It was also the only drivable vehicle my family had during hard economical times at the start of the last decade, and has never required any serious repairs. It's a gas guzzler, but we couldn't afford to do anything but just drive what we had. So yeah, can say with absolute certainty that Ford vans are great, dependable and made to last forever.
my grandfather has an e350 from the 90s as a work vehicle, absolutely bare bones with no options whatsoever. has over 300k on the odometer, a testament to how bulletproof they were. i want that van so badly.
I remember having my mind blown at around 8 years old when I was at the drag strip with my dad and uncle. My uncle had a drag car and my dad was crew chief, and I was the gopher. Need a distributor? I got it. Gas? No problem. Axel? Easy. New tire? I’m gonna need some help... I was 8 and drag slicks are fucking massive, give me a break! Anyways, so we’re at the strip for some big race event and I’m going around through the pits checking out cars when I pass a ford van that I thought was a tow vehicle, but there was no drag car around it, but the sliding door was open, and something inside was very shiny. I go look and there’s a giant 500+ ci engine sitting right there in the middle through the sliding door with a giant blower and nitrous lines running all over the place! It was magnificent! I had never seen something like that before! I’ve seen a couple other similar van setups like that in the many years since then but that one blew my mind at what was possible with vehicles if you have the time, money, and dedication. I love it.
I traded a mk2 transit for 15 quid and a hat in the late nineties, it even had a numberplate with Gary spelled out, loved that van!!! It lasted about 5 years then rust ate it, dam.
I paid $300 in 2009 for a 1987 ford aerostar. It was a manual transmission with a slipping clutch and bald tires, it ran for 9 months and the only thing that put it out of commission was the fuel pump took a crap. But in the rain with those bald tires and having the interior stripped and all the weight was on the front axle it allowed it to break the rear tires loose suuperr easily. I used to drift it like a literal drift king, and it was honestly one of the BEST and most FUN vehicle i had ever owned (out of 17 total). Whenever it rained i would always jump in the van and find my favorite slipperry roads and just go drifting since it was my cheap daily/toy car. All i had to do to drift it was literally gas her and turn and she would break loose, then i would just hold and feather the throttle so i didnt have to use the weak clutch. My favorite thing to do was pulling BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT epic drifts and get her as sideways as i could and look at peoples reactions when i slide by. It was strictly a slick rain drifter though, but it was awesome because you could do such epic slides at really low speeds. My 3 favorite cars where i had the most fun in were actually the cheapest, and i paid a whopping 2300 for all 3 lol. I had a 90? sentra that only had lowering springs but i would "track it" right across the street from me. It was a new subdivision but all that was there was the curvy roads because they didn't even build one house yet. So id take it there and time myself on how fast i could run a lap, and at one part there was a downhill curve before a culdesac so i would come in fast then rip the ebrake and partially drift her, before i would sneak it into first and launch it back up the hill. If you had ever driven the car you would be EXTREMELY impressed, because if you pushed the clutch to the floor the pedal would stick to the bottom, so you had to push it just enough to disengage but not too far or it would stick. It had a really long geared 4 spd manual so for one section i had to rev match her and actually go down to 1st gear but she downshifted really well. Not to brag but also being 100% honest i had that car and that track dialed in. It was a slow car but it handled pretty well and it was all turns anyways. But everyone i ever took for "a lap" had their mind blown with my heel-toe braking/shifting, all the rev matches and downshifting, and how i could get a FWD car to oversteer and drift the corners so perfectly. To this day im sure that the neighborhood has completely black corners/tracks from all the laps and tires i went through. I "crashed" it a few times though, i hit one curb at a 65* angle doing about 45mph and my tire exploded, but i never actually damaged anything else on the car. Sometimes the throttle cable would stick at WOT and coincidentally it needed to be started with a screwdriver and i could find the screwdriver so i had to put it in 4th gear and slam on the brakes until i snubbed it out. Luckily she had like 80hp-ish only and the clutch/brakes were good. Eventually the headgasket went on it right after i sold it to a friend, but he wasnt a car guy and was known for always flooring his cars EVERYWHERE and bringing it up to red line every shift. He also blew up a b20 turbo civic he bought that way, and he did it to another car as well. Sorry for the novel this just brought back so many memories

The van in the thumbnail i had as a Matchbox. My favorite car for sure.
