  • Unlock the secrets to sourcing antiques at car boot sales and discover hidden treasures for pennies! In this video, I will share my top antique hunting tips and show you how to find cheap antiques that can turn into valuable investments. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a beginner, these tips will transform your antique treasure hunting experience.
Just this last month, I’ve unearthed incredible finds such as a solid silver vase from Iran for just 50p, now valued at £695, a Moorcroft pottery lamp for £18 now up for £395, and Waterford glasses for £10 valued at £295. These are not just lucky finds; I regularly discover items for under a fiver that are worth far more. Stick with me as I reveal how you can achieve the same results!
First and foremost, there’s no such thing as luck - what counts is volume. The more car boot sales you attend, the higher your chances of finding valuable antiques. By visiting multiple sales regularly, you’ll increase your chances of finding hidden gems at flea markets and garage sales.
    My Journey and Experience
A little about me: I have been working in and around car boot sales for over 25 years, buying and selling antiques and collectibles, and reselling them on antiquesarena.com. Over the decades, I’ve perfected the art of antique buying, and now I’m here to share my best practices with you.
    Research and Identification
Understanding how to identify valuable antiques is crucial. Spend time researching sold items on platforms like eBay to see what sells for the highest prices. This will help you focus on items like Clitchy paperweights, Chinese porcelain, or a silver vase - items that can bring you real profit. Learning about quality also helps; even if you don’t know what something is, spotting quality can lead you to treasure. Each week, I come home with one or two items that need further research, and that's after decades in the business.
Strategic Shopping at Car Boot Sales
When attending car boot sales, patience and strategy are your best friends. Don’t rush to the front of the queue or crowd around a stall. Instead, move away and circle back as items are still being unpacked. Speed isn’t your ally - take your time to properly evaluate each stall and don’t let the rush cause you to miss out on potential treasures. Remember, hidden treasures in thrift stores and car boot sales often require a keen eye and thorough inspection.
    Top Tips for Sourcing Antiques
Volume is Key: Visit as many sales as possible to increase your chances of finding valuable items.
Ignore the Naysayers: Stall holders might say there’s no gold in the jewelry box - always check for yourself. You might find vintage costume jewelry or coins that they don’t value.
Search Thoroughly: If you find boxes of silver plate, tea sets, or cutlery, search every piece, including looking for foreign hallmarks.
Don’t Rush: Take your time at each stall to avoid missing out on potential treasures.
Networking: Build relationships with other dealers. Once they know your interests, they might bring items just for you, bypassing the general public.
    My Proven Strategies
Over the years, I’ve learned that antique treasure hunting is about more than just luck - it’s about strategy and persistence. For example, always be on the lookout for valuable finds at estate sales and garage sales. Use apps and websites to locate sales in your area. And when you’re at the sales, don’t just look for obvious items. Learn to identify quality craftsmanship and materials, even if you don’t immediately recognize the item. This skill alone can lead to some of the best finds.

Great video Edward 👍 I've only started realising the benefits of sticking around at the boot sale. I used to do one or two looks and then shoot off!
The only other advice I'd give is to not get caught up in the boot sale money mindset.
Suddenly £5 may sound like a lot of money, but if you could get the same item in an auction for that price you'd snap it up!
I see reseller videos where they're trying to get off 50p and I wonder why they're buying it all if the margin is that small!

One more important thing Walter, that you have to convey. If you're interested in something, make sure you have the item in hand. Many times other dealers are ruthless, and they'll snatch the item, that's in front of you, unless you have a hold of it. It's happened to me a couple times. I've even had people try to rummage through my cart, after I've purchased items. You really have to be watchful of your merchandise.

Great advise Walter, iv also been in the situation where I am in 2 minds on an item more than once for a couple of pounds. Walked away and then return and find its sold,
Should always trust yourself and take that chance on low cost items.

Look around up and down. In places where you miss. I found 2 brooches in a charity shop in a mixed box of other ones. Learnt things from others. For example, I looked some clothing brands which were on the £1 rack and picked up two items on two different days, one jumper and a tshirt - both retailing for £100 each, one was like £95 etc.

I had to do a web search on "Is a car boot called an 'automotive swap meet in North America? Web answer...it is a 'flea market where people sell anything from their table, or boot (trunk of the car). Is that a fair assessment? In Canada, swap meets are automotive-related items only, and stupid me, I was getting them mixed up. I love flea markets and you're right, I find many a bargain, and a magnet is my best friend. Thanks for sharing your secrets. 👍

Some of the best advise I could add to is look at everything and don't be skingy
I came back Sunday from a bootsale purchases a massive baramotore and a voltage meter for £40 for the pair I'll get over 2.400 for them eventually
I got them at 10am everyone saw them and walked past they either was frightened of the size or was too bloody cheap to dip into thier pockets and this happens often for the higher end pieces I've acquired
Also I'd recomend as above don't be scared of the size if you can ship it then its golden if not that leave it
Plus one of the huge things I keep being told about is sales rate if the profit is there it don't matter if it takes years to sell that £40 will eventually net me more then enough profit not to care about it for the next few years
However saying that only allow yourself to aquire 10-20% of your overall stock to be long tail items the forcus should always be short term sellers unless the margins are incredible
Another thing I'd also like to say is going to the bootsale late can be hugely advantages since I go with knowledge and most people in my area know shit

I think Knowledge, and Timing, are the 2 most important parts of finding good merchandise. Obviously, getting to the goods before others, is very important. However, knowledge really helps you, when you're not the first at the table. It helps you pick out the Gems, others left behind, because they simply didn't know the items had value.

Hi mate. I agree it helps to have a big knowledge. But there are items people with no real knowledge could take a chance on just by learning what is quality.

What you said about jewellery at car boot sales is true. Last week as I was walking out of a car boot in Abergavenny I picked up a box of costume jewellery, seller said I could have it for a £1. Got home and found a pair of Kit Heath silver celtic earrings and a few other bits of silver in the box. So you never know and that's why is fun. (shame about Cowbridge car boot is it coming back do you know)

I'm guessing that paintings aren't usually available at the boots. It's Rare, that you show us a painting you picked up. Lately, at the Flea, my best finds have been Paintings. I picked up some good pieces just yesterday. Luckily, I was first at the table, and picked out everything I wanted, before the competition showed up.
