1:25:52 I was already laughing from the awesome sound effects of the gun fight, especially the blood squirting out of the carotid artery... and then Jane absolutely killed it with "oh no, his white suit!"
On a meta level, this whole episode was really elevated by how lax and chill the rest of the Oxventure has been so far, giving me a false sense of security. The thought of a character death never even crossed my mind, and while Andy was doing an incredible job at selling how intimidating Bellows was, I kept thinking "lol they're gonna clown on this guy soon." This was all done so amazingly well, from the music to the performances and everything else.
I know, right?! I was expecting Bellows to be absolutely owned by Nate and it would be super funny. At worst I thought maybe Nate might get injured and that would also be funny. But damn, I was not ready for a death! And Andy's sinister portrayal of Bellows just got darker. Bellows is legit an amazing baddie. I'm hoping they take some gruesome revenge to get justice for Nate.
It really helps to drive home that this character is an actual threat. And while I like Nate, I'm actually kind of hoping that Johnny comes back with a new character because Nate being 100% dead and not coming back somehow would really elevate the fights in this campaign.
I love that they have these other games to take risks with. Oxventure is the comfy, funny, chaotic comfort food of their TTRPs. Everyone must be protected to derail another day. It’s fun to introduce new games with higher stakes where they can take chances.
@@Pseudowolf YES! I've played 5 characters in my current Hyperborea campaign... and I've had 5 deaths. Yeah, I got better the fifth time, but only that one.

Nate calling the place a "real shithole" and then Johnny just laughing into their hands after that is priceless. I love that it isn't censored. I think my favorite type of reaction is when the player's eyes get really wide. Johnny at the fear level being 4 here. Mike back in Blade in the Dark when Lilith falls on the Chauncey actor in that play. Andy's acting is amazing. I love his portrayal of the man with consumption (I'm just picturing Doc Holiday as portrayed by Val Kilmer in Tombstone). Them forgetting to talk about stakes is also brilliant. Oh man, the music playing when Bellows rides up and walks in the saloon is amazing. I might have sworn when I realized that Nate was drawn against Bellows right at the start like that. It's a tense moment, but Garnet having "power points" made me laugh a lot, because all I could picture was actual PowerPoint presentations. lol they are heavily self-censoring. Johnny for example, almost every other word out of their mouth is cunt or fuck outside Oxventure stuff. And Andy and Luke say fuck a lot on their podcast.
@@masondeross I know. I watched Johnny and Aoife playing Bloodborne back when Johnny was still at Eurogamer and they both were swearing a ton, lol. I'm just used to there being a bleep when they let something slip, particularly in their D&D vids. One of my favorite Oxbox vids is a very early one of Andy and Jane playing Adam's Venture and Andy is so frustrated by the end that he tells the guy that he "fixed your fucking windmills" and it's not been bleeped out.
Love Johnny's immediate "What?!" reaction to the fear level being 4 whilst Luke and Jane are joking around. It makes the reveal that Johnny knows what the fear level mechanically means even better. can't wait to see Nate come back harrowed, fingers crossed they do it🤞 love the concept of an undead gravedigger, and honestly wouldn't be surprised if that was the direction Johnny wanted to take all along 👀
I agree with you that it's likely the direction intended all along, but do wish it wasn't as I'd actually like a sense of danger in the games and doing this would go 'One out of one' for dead PCs being bought back. The Harrowed does make a lot of sense too. As a character Nate hasn't really shown any strengths, everything they've done has just been the bumbling old guy. This kind of character works well in books but less so in RPGs, and with a point-buy system like Savage Worlds you end up wondering where they've spent the points they got from the obvious hindrances. From what we've seen it's not combat, physical, social, intellectual, magical.. or anything which has turned up in the first two sessions- and he should be roughly on par with those who sling guns or hexes. Now having a nice old guy who's intent is to die early and come back Harrowed? That's a character that fits in more in terms of power, means the party fills two of three 'weird' Deadland slots (Jane's Huckster is already there, Harrowed is missing, Mad science may be too close to Edvard) and adds some nice storytelling fun on the way as well as giving Andy a nice way to make Bellows scarier. I've played RPGs for long enough to be familiar with character death- but do think it could have an extra bit of 'Oh noes!' if you've had official artwork drawn and sold merch with the character on it.
@@normal_vector I dunno, it doesn't look intentional. Maybe Johnny intended to play Nate in a carefree way that would end up with him dead, but I don't think the particular way he died was scripted. Not unless Johnny and Andy acted the hell out of all the random coincidences that lead to Nate's death
@@mar_speedmanI'm not sure what you meant by coincidences? Johnny put Nate's name in the hat, chose to use a shotgun *on his back* for a quickdraw contest (when he could have borrowed a pistol like the convict did), all knowing that Nate was a real liability when it comes to shooting. Also, Johnny made it real clear on the train that Nate's body is a ruin and even just falling over could kill him. At that point I had a feeling that Johnny would place Nate in harms way to provide a good story beat
@@alexharrison2743 Nate might be a bit reckless, but he's not that incompetent. Johnny was probably just not expecting to face Bellows straight away. That's what I mean. Nate happened to, on a roll, face Bellows. Or at least so it seems

I absolutely love how the flashback system has wormed its way into the minds of players to the point that it came up both in DnD (with Corazon wanting to flashback installing elf-proof locks on his captain's quarters) and now in here. It's such a good Blades mechanic and Luke trying to use it to his advantage here is honestly the best

@@ceilingfanenthusiast6041 Yeah, even when Luke DM'd a D&D session, I found him to be much less forgiving that Johnny.
This isn't a knock on Johnny, mind you. They are just usually more forgiving than Luke was then and on into Blades.
And now Andy seems to be the same. You can still have fun and be entertaining, but it's important to remind players they aren't covered in plot armor.
@Pseudowolf i completely agree. I loooveeddd Blades tbh. Luke managed such an incredible dramatic and tense tone. I was genuinely really invested in the stakes. I almost wish Johnny got another chance at Dming because Oxventure has been firmly established as having a goofy tone. They're a great player and I would love to see them show off what they can do as a GM!
I feel bad saying it because I really don't mean to knock Johnny as a GM. Ultimately though, Oxventure started as a one off. I love it and find it hilarious, but I'd love to see a serious campaign led by Johnny.
As a Texan, Luke’s “it’s from Paris….Texas” line killed me 😂
As a former resident of Madrid, New Mexico, that definitely gave me a chuckle.
@@inscrutablemungus4143 yeah, as a former resident of Paris.... Texas, this amuses me greatly :D

Andy's character work sent chills down my spine, especially as Bellows - absolutely terrifying stuff
I knew Deadlands was going to be great, but I had no idea how immersive Andy's acting and descriptions would be! He is absolutely killing it! I'm really looking forward to next episode.
@@dee... I love all the games they've played and all the various characters we've met (both player characters and assorted NPCs by various GMs), but Andy's portrayal of Bellows is perfection to me. He fully leaned into it and absolutely nailed the voice and the mannerisms. The others are damn good, but something about how Andy portrayed Bellows puts him a step above with that character. I can't wait to see how the next episode plays out. As bone-chilingly evil as Bellows is I can't wait to see more of him. I hope we get to see Delacy vs Bellows, because Luke and Andy playing off each other in character is going to be a treat.
Absolutely. I actually went „holy crap“ in that scene. I watched the episode twice today because of Bellows (and the ending).
1:25:52 I was already laughing from the awesome sound effects of the gun fight, especially the blood squirting out of the carotid artery... and then Jane absolutely killed it with "oh no, his white suit!"
That was her inner Prudence 🤣
@@ivykiz That's why Prudence wore red ;)
I dunno, Bellows felt to me like a lethal man from the very beginning. I did hold onto hope that he would spare Nate, but I didn't once expect that Nate would kill him. In fact, I'm not even sure Delacy could kill him. Well, maybe he could with Garnet's help at least
I knew Andy would enjoy this game system if he tried it. Glad he brought the group along for the ride. =)
Aw, I love Garnet and Delacy thinking of ways to protect/help Nate. Oh man, Andy playing Bellows is absolutely brilliant and I'm getting chills from it.
Holy shit! I can't believe we have to wait a week. I'm legit tearing up. Just...wow. I'm speechless.
Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of PowerPoint presentations too 😂
Justice for Nate! Justice for Nate! We demand justice! I hope Delacey and Garnett absolutely destroy Bellows. I need to see Bellows turned into the consistency of an exploded can of beans!
@@dee... I cannot wait to see what they decide to do to Bellows. I have a feeling Delacy isn't going to want to wait around for the other duels and try to kill him legally. I want to see what other hexes Garnet has and if we'll get another exploded Sasquatch situation. I wouldn't say no to them doing a bit of torture before the exploding.
lol they are heavily self-censoring.
I couldn't do what they do and have to censor myself, because I swear so much when gaming (and when not gaming, to be honest) that it's practically instinctive.
36:40 for anyone wanting to see Johnny's 😱 reaction
Johnny: No PC will ever die in my campaign!
Luke: No PC will ever die in my campaign!
Andy: No PC will ever die in the first session of my campaign!
Love Johnny's immediate "What?!" reaction to the fear level being 4 whilst Luke and Jane are joking around. It makes the reveal that Johnny knows what the fear level mechanically means even better.
Also RiP Nate. You were gone too soon. Hope Johnny can create a new character and get their ass back to the game next time. Not that I think they wouldn't, but still.
Thank you for burying the spoiler further in your comment - wish others had done that coz I watch on mobile and the top comment gets shown, and it spoiled the ending for me 😭
Andy has established that he isn’t pulling any punches in this game, and I am here for it!
I absolutely love Andy's acting and storytelling.
Props to Andy for an absolutly terrifying villian!
Andy is really good as a GM/Marshal. Just killing it.
Killing Nate, too.
I really love how Benjamin Bellows was introduced in the saloon. The mood was incredible and super creepy. Really well done. All of it. Amazing! I think this episode set the mood for the series extremely well. Love it, thank you! Also, I really loved Johnny‘s absolute dedication until the end. Superb.
can't wait to see Nate come back harrowed, fingers crossed they do it🤞 love the concept of an undead gravedigger, and honestly wouldn't be surprised if that was the direction Johnny wanted to take all along 👀
Was wondering if he was all along. Maybe his plan is to "die" so he can sneak around?
Whoever did/chose the music for Bellows did an amazing job. It compliments Andy’s acting so well.
The tremble in Andy's voice at that "thanks for watching" at the end almost breaks my heart more then the minutes before!
I never thought I'd see the day where *that* happens in an oxventure role playing campaign. This is so insanely good and I can't wait to see where it's heading. Definitely going to need so much more Deadlands.
At this point I am convinced Nate has been harrowed this whole time but the tension for next week is still killing me omg
Aaaaaaand Andy worked Arthur Morgan into the story as Garnet's poker opponent. Naturally.
It could also be doc holiday
It was more Doc Holliday he actually did a Tombstone quote and was mimicking Kilmer's portrayal
@@joshuarose1381 Glad to see I'm not the only one who was picturing that. I loved that bit. Seems every Old West town needs at least one person with consumption.
It was definitely Doc Holiday from Tombstone. He directly quoted Doc multiple times
Yeah, definitely thought Doc Holliday
This campaign of the Oxventure crew has been fantastic so far. All the players seem to be loving their rolls judging by how well they play against each other. Andy is doing a wonderful job as the Marshal. His storytelling and voices are top notch.
It's crazy to me how believable Andy is as an old timey western personality. That and how hilarious Jonny is as old characters.
That smile on Andy at the very end. Oh my goodness, that was the best smile.
You know, I wasn't really worried... until I saw how little of the episode was left. Cause it was not going to get wrapped up that quickly. Which meant a cliffhanger.
Everyone was amazing. But cannot tell you how relieved I am about how Andy/Bellows dealt with Delacey at the very end.
Side note, that gunshot sound effect that we hear BEFORE the description starts? *chefs kiss*
So glad someone noticed that, it's so so so good
Only 10 minutes in and absolutely cracking up. I love Delacey; I relate to Luke as a player so much. Nate is so adorable. Jane is wonderful as always.
Andy is a great Marshall.
Don't get too attached to Nate.
*Nate was so adorable
I’m not too concerned about the end, Johnny’s a good role player and Nate’s reaction at the end screamed a sort of Mark of Cain sort of character. Especially all his stories about all those dangerous jobs that he somehow survived.
Fascinating whenever a fellow SPN fan pops up in the wild. I completely agree with you.
Jane's character should get a copy of "Expert at the Card Table" by S.W. Erdnase. It's the original bible for card cheats.
In-setting Hoyle's is essentially the book that Hucksters learnt their magic from, which I guess is why she mentioned it.
she has a copy.
@@dochollowday8288 Correct. Hoyle was the first huckster, and the secrets of hundreds of hexes are hidden in the text that only other hucksters can recognize.
She isn't a card cheat. They use trickery and deception. She uses devils and magic. You are suggesting she buys a book on close up magic, when she is a wizard.
She could, if it hadn’t been published in 1902, a little over 20 years after the setting of Deadlands.
… IF THIS IS HOW THE SERIES BEGINS, I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE WHERE IT GOES! Amazing Marshaling, Andy!

"I'm going to enjoy this, Nate" gave me CHILLS. Andy had my heart racing with his portrayal of Bellows. I was so tense by the end of the video! It's the first time ever in any "oxventure presents..." videos I felt legitimately creeped out. I mean, Flannery was a weird creepy voldo-esque son of a B, but Bellows is alarmingly calm and sadistic. I hope we get lots more Bellows in the next episode!

This series is quite frankly, amazing. Andy is perfect as a Marshall and as a GM, plus the players, Johnny, Jane and Luke's characters all complement each other so well. So thank you for that your awesome people you.
I will never emotionally recover from this
Andy is basically living his The Quick and the Dead fantasy, isn't he? Luke revealed that Delacy was inspired by DiCaprio's character last week, and now this competition happens. Love it.
This is perhaps the only Western reference that I would get, and Andy immediately used it. I love it.

Last week I mentioned The Quick and the Dead, and this is The Quick and the Dead, I love that movie, thank you, Andy.
Hi welcome to Deadlands it's the second episode and the comic relief is in a death match with the Big Bad.
Andy, if that "So I'm doing this rather than anyone else more suited" at the start of the first episode had any seed of genuine doubt, lemme tell you, you're killing it. From lots of personal experience, the "um"s will die with practice if you're concerned about them, but it looks like you have all the genuinely hard stuff down pat. Also, good episode from everyone else too, so far all of my high excitement for this series is getting incredibly satisfied.
WHAT an ending. YES!
The father-son dynamic between Johnny and Luke is quite fun. (Sorry I forgot the character names)
Edit: what is happening?!?!
Doc Holliday stopped by the Quick and the Dead on his way to Tombstone. The crossover I never knew I needed.
This series continues to not disappoint, thank you again members of Outside Xbox and Xtra for do this awesome series and for Andy to GM in such a fine, funny and entertaining way, it's a credit to all of you fine folk.
I am so happy this is a series and not a one off (I know the correct term is one shot but one off feels right considering the game)
