Arrow Dynamics - The Classic Coasters

- Arrow Dynamics is the "grandfather" of all roller coaster manufacturers. They have been the driving force behind many legendary projects like Magnum XL-200, Vortex, X2, Corkscrew and Matterhorn Bobsleds. In this video, I will be discussing some of my favorite roller coasters by Arrow. Regardless what you think about this amazing manufacturer, you must agree that the coaster community would not be the same if Arrow Dynamics was there leading the way!

It's tragic how Arrow went under right as they were really starting to put up a fight with the competitors that came to overshadow them in the early 90s. They are certainly one of the most important companies to the industry and we owe a lot to them for what we all have today.
It’s a sad, yet, instructive example in what happens when you rest on your laurels. The world will pass you by and by the time you realize it, it’s too late. It is one of life’s harshest, but most essential lessons.
You definitely need to find your way back out to ride X2!
Hopefully soon!
I had a chance to go out there to ride X2 this summer but we canceled the trip:(
@@fshoe32411 I'm sorry you did not get to experience x2
@@fshoe32411 bro I feel you so much. I had already gotten tickets for a california coaster tour but then the virus happened and ruined everything. If the virus didn't happen then I would have been on a plane to california next tuesday.
I was gonna tour California's parks for my 30th birthday in September 2018, had to cancel last minute and lost a lot of money. It won't be easy planning another trip since I'm in Italy
Big Bad Wolf was one of my all time favorite coasters. Every ride made me feel as if I were transported through the Bavarian village and into the Black Forest before leaping down and over the Rhine river. I always felt like the coaster itself portrayed the feeling of being a wolf slinking through the forest so well. Although I enjoy Verbolten, Big Bad Wolf holds a special place in my heart as my all time favorite Arrow Dynamics coaster.
I only road it once. I’ve watched some videos lately and have since remembered how awesome it was. Wish I would have road it more.
I totally agree with everything you said. My comment was a much shorter version lol
This list makes it clear to me why I love Arrow so much.
The head banging is just part of the experience you gotta roll with it
I'm glad that you are recognizing just how important Arrow Dynamics is to the coaster industry. Most people who love rides from Intamin, B&M, RMC, Gerstlauer, all these modern-day manufacturers just hate on Arrow. Well, those coasters wouldn't be around if Arrow Dynamics didn't exist many many years prior. We wouldn't have massive coasters today if it wasn't for Arrow Dynamics building Magnum XL-200, or even steel coasters if Matterhorn Bobsleds didn't open. They've made a legacy that I think is insurmountable and quite remarkable. When you think of classic looping coasters or classic coasters in general, you think of Arrow Dynamics. I'm sad that Arrow Dynamics went under in 2002, since Tennessee Tornado and X2 were just some of the best coasters of their kind, and Alan Schilke really wanted the company to flourish. But competition from more modern-day manufacturers couldn't get Arrow back on their feet to compete :( I think Alan Schilke gave Arrow Dynamics two final worthy coasters. S&S Worldwide, I hope you guys keep maintaining these Arrow coasters to the best of your abilities.
Love my custom arrow loopers....and, Magnum is my favorite! Viper at Darien lake was my first ever roller coaster! Very nostalgic.
Magnum isn’t a looper
I’m not a roller expert at all.. But when I watch these videos I cannot ignore the lochness monster. 1978 Wow it still looks fresh to this day.. I would dearly love to ride it!!!
The amusement industry would be super different if arrow dynamics never existed. My home park is six flags over Texas and that has the worlds first arrow mine train, and just that coaster changed the amusement industry a LOT. They may not of made the best coasters in the world, but in a world without arrow, the amusement industry would be so much different.
I always loved Runaway Mine Train, it's jerkiness is what makes it a fun experience and a fun ride for me. I also like those moments when Mr Freeze is going at the same time and you pass under & beside the track, more luck based if it happens.
I'm happy to live kinda sorta close to SFOT.
I could not agree more. My home park was SFGAD growing up and I still remember the day we drove into the parking lot to see the Scream Machine for the first time its inaugural season. It was unbelievably massive for the time and stood as the first coaster you saw pulling into the park. I have such a love for Arrow but can barely handle some of the coasters these days. My new home park is BGW for the past few years and I LOVE Loch Ness and miss BBW terribly, but man is Nessie tough for my neck on the entry of the loops. The G forces hurt man. lol.
I still love it though.
Arrow is just the best but this too shall pass as all things do. I just hope I can take my kids on some suspended Arrow coasters to get them as close to BBW as possible! Great vid ! Thanks
RIP ARROW
Great video. Im so glad Darien Lake's Viper made the list. I'm from WNY and Viper was my first "big" coaster. It's still a fun ride and I love that it went back to the all black color scheme some years ago. The only sad part is, like the rest of the park, it no longer has a 2nd train. The line, even on a station wait, is now ridiculously slow moving.
My fav they made is Big Thunder Mountain. I think they made that but I swear that ride is ALWAYS smooth
It's kinda crazy you mention that memory of Magnum XL 200. On a trip to CP in 2013, I had the exact same experience. We had managed to snag a room at the hotel breakers so we were staying on site, so we were able to be one of the last people in the park, and since Magnum was right there we marathoned it over and over, staying in our seats as they just cycled us through. All the while, there was a lightning storm happening across the lake and the trims were off as well. It's my favorite coaster memory and it's one of the reasons Magnum is my favorite coaster.
These stories are why I'm glad to be an enthusiast! 👍
Big Bad Wolf RIP 🐺 I miss my scenic trip through the Bavarian village followed by an outstanding dive into the rhine
Arrow coasters have a thrilling look and Great American Scream Machine will always be my favorite!
Big Bad Wolf, Busch Gardens. Only road it once. Now wish I could have road it more. Also for roughest coaster ever Anaconda at King’s Dominion.
X2 is not only my favorite Arrow, but it's my overall favorite ride I've ever been on. I hope you can get back out there and get on it soon. My next favorite Arrow was Vortex at Kings Island, then Magic Mountain's Viper. I have a ton of respect for all that Arrow did, and I always enjoy all of their rides. I do have to hold onto the restraints and lean my head forward to avoid headbanging, but that has always worked for me on all of them.
GASM was so much fun in the early years, but didn't age well. I remember waiting well over an hour to ride it the first year. The last time I rode it, it was a walk-on and painful. But still good memories.
Those two back to back inversions on Vortex is still one of my top 5 moments on on any coaster. RIP.
1. Magnum XL
2. Vortex
3. Top Gun/Flight Deck/The Bat
4. Adventure Express
5. Trailblaizer
X2 is the most intense roller coaster I've ridden, I love it. I can't wait to get back out to California to ride it again, my favorite Arrow coaster though, definitely Great American Scream Machine. I would give a close second to Lochness Monster, as it was the first inverting roller I ever went on.
Carolina cyclone at carowinds was my first arrow as a child while magnum xl is my all time favorite arrow.
Screaming in the tunnel on The Viper at Darien Lake is tradition! Sorry not sorry. lol 😉 I've been riding The Viper since I was 10 in 1985 and it's my favorite coaster. ❤ I found some videos of it still running strong in May 2021 and gaining new fans as the younger generation has been discovering it. They said it was smooth as glass, and they loved it better than the Tennessee Tornado. It was running in the park as they were struggling to open Ride of Steel. Good ol' reliable Viper. ❤
Matterhorn is one of my very favorite coasters by anyone. I loved Arrow Dynamics, bunch of guys with pencils in their pockets figuring stuff out. Amazing. I used to go to Frontier Village which was their testing grounds. I truly miss this company, they were America at its best. What is your favorite roller coaster manufacturer now? I think Vekoma is really turning some heads now.
What a great production! We're pleased we could help with some of the footage, thank you for the shout out :)
You're welcome! Thanks for helping!
Nobody saw this
Be thankful these are still open
you should have put phantom’s revenge/ steel phantom as an honorable mention because now that it is Morgan, it was once arrow
I thought about it but the ride is now like 95% morgan.
i get that, i honestly
XscreamThrills i agree, honestly now that i think about it it is
Great vid, and also great editing.
Thanks!
The Orient Express - a much missed icon!
Yea Arrow docuseries people ALWAYS forget the Best one of all!
the Orient Express is my favorite coaster, non others have held a candle to it.
I remember the Great Anerican Scream Machine at Great Adventure being one of the roughest and most uncomfortable rides I've ever been on. And I would love the Runaway Train if they would replace the cars to fit adults comfortably. The cramped seats make it more like a kiddie ride.
It's and easy question to answer: X2 in the back, especially in the inside seats and preferably in the side you're coming from. Still: All four in the back are fantastic but keep your legs straight or your calf muscles might bang into the seat. Nice video: Thanks for posting!
The first time I rode X2, I couldn't believe it existed. I had 2 inside front row rides, but I heard the back literally tries to kill you. And I thought the front was already insane.
Funny how you mentioned Viper at Darien Lake. That was my first ever looping roller coaster I rode in 1990. We moved from Chicago to Buffalo, so Darien Lake was my main park. I have logged about 100-120 rides on viper.
Viper at Darien lake was almost removed and replaced when they where owned by six flags the first time, also it’s kinda funny that two of the coasters on the list have the same name
Oh man I'm bummed you didn't get to ride X2!!! SF Magic Mountain has done a better job keeping that ride open over the last couple of years so I hope you can come back some time and ride it. :) Also I'm pleased see Ninja get some love. I visit the park with my sister on a semi regular basis and she talks trash about that ride every single time. But I happen to really like it! Great video and tribute to Arrow Dynamics!
I rode Viper at SFMM recently. It's basically the same experience now as it was when new, minus the 90 minute wait. I loved having it in the park as it basically stands as a reference point for what huge coasters used to be. That said, and even with no wait, I only rode it once.
Also got my first and second rides on X2. I thought it was insane, in a good way. Definitely schedule a return trip to SFMM.
I 100% agree bro. Keep Viper sfmm
I remember riding Shockwave at Great America when I was a kid, mid to late 90s. Took a couple years for me to build the courage to ride it. It had a menacing look to it. I once remember blacking out during the third loop. I’ll always remember kind of having to grit your teeth to make it through haha. Loved it! My first inverted coaster was the demon also an Arrow.
Steeplechase is my first arrow. its a really fun ride. i like the fact thet you ride a horse XD
Nearly at 7K subscribers 👏👏👏
Now you have 7,000 - well done! 🎢
My only Hyper is an Arrow, I’m pretty sure it was the first “proper” rollercoaster I ever did. Thanks dad. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is my home park and on a (at the time, rare. It was 10 (and still is for me) 10 miles down the road, my parents just weren’t into coasters) trip when I was tall enough, so probably 8 or 9 my dad dared me to go on The Big One with him. He never rode it again, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve done it.
Hopefully one day I'll make it over to the UK and check out some of their great rides!
great story.
XscreamThrills we have plenty of crap too, the fact that in the shadow of The Big One is a relocated SLC (moving it hasn’t made it worse though. It was that bad before). I have to admit that my favourite ride at the park is a powered family coaster, but that’s because it’s the Wallace and Gromit Thrill O Matic and it’s so perfectly themed (and lacks headbanging).
But there's also Icon and some other classic coasters at your park
XscreamThrills Icon is pretty great and one of my favourites, but just be forewarned that the woodies are rough as hell. Especially Grand National, but new trains for that and The Big Dipper would help with that. The only way to improve Infusion is to get rid of it.
It's kinda terrible that when arrow finally got good at building coasters, they went bankrupt.....
It's pretty sad 😭
I agree
I personally loved their swinging coasters like Vampire at Chessington’s World of Adventures, UK. Luckily I got to ride most versions apart from, very sadly, Big Bad Wolf or Eagle Fortress. I only rode the original X incarnation at Magic Mountain which still stands as my most intense ever coaster experience; such a unique, ambitious concept IMO.
@@martinporter4980 love vampire, it's an amazing family coaster
Martin Porter tbh I never understood why S&S didn’t keep some other blueprints besides the 4D coaster, since they could have refurbished their suspended models.
You made it to 7k! Congrats!
Thanks!
What a great history!
My favorite Arrow Looper has to go to Demon at SFGAM, it is very smooth, I didn't find any headbanging at all and the drop actually gives some decent airtime. Overall, Magnum and X2 are my 2 favorites out of all arrows.
Max Hagenauer Really? It’s my home park and every time I ride it, I get a bad headache. Maybe it’s just me.
I honestly love arrow loopers alot.
Your name kinda gives it away! :)
I always start my coaster rides at Hershey with Trailblazer so it has a special place in my heart. Plus, it’s pretty much the only coaster my daughter will consistently ride that doesn’t also have toddlers riding it! 😂
I AM VERY PROUD TO BE YOUR 7K sub. Keep up the good work, and yes I checked
How did you check?
Awesome! Thank you!
I went on my second acc and the number turned from 6.99K to 7K when I subbed and I chechked by messing around a bit and I found out
Thanks!
I know it will never happen but I wish they made a come back like I love that track design
Vekoma was copying that style, but almost no one does the inner wheel style accept wooden/hybrid coasters
Wow. I'm very impressed. I thought for sure this was going to be a bash-fest, one step away from a "rides you want destroyed" video. But NO! You surprised me! Great retrospective look back. For me, personally, I would have also mentioned The Screamin' Demon. Kings Island's Arrow shuttle looping coaster. Opening in 1977 it was in direct competition with sister park King's Dominion's King Kobra, a Schwarzkopf shuttle looping coaster. The two gave rebirth to the shuttle coaster and just look at how far the launch coaster has come!
I was trying to focus on roller coasters that I'd ridden. I would've loved to ride Screamin' Demon! Thanks for the support!
@@XscreamThrills Yes. I figured that was the case. That's why I say "for me, personally." Truth be told, back in the day, I was far from blown away by it. I barely considered it a coaster. I very much gravitate to classic full circuit, chain lifts, straight drops, but as a young kid this surprised me. The jenky sixty feet of mezzanine stairs only to be launched straight out with no idea when the drop is coming. Looking back, I actually think the suspense equaled that of a drop tower (except drop towers didn't exist yet!). Not sure if Elitch Gardens or Frontier City are on your bucket list of parks, but you can still steal a ride on one there!
NOW YOU SHALL PAY!!!
Oop exit off to your right, have a good day
Lol!!!! Pissed me off as a kid 😂
Which coaster is this?
Bluejaytnt101 adventure express at kings island
As well as Lex Luthors drop tower.
The thumbnail is my three favorite Arrows.
Aye nice on 7K subs!
Thanks!
0:17 Sorry am I the only one who didn’t mind Arrow feeling coasters? I mean I like Magnum more than Diamondback personally!
I've quite enjoyed arrows on my trips over the past few years. X2 is next level awesome(#3 on my personal list), but even all the rest have been largely enjoyable. A little rough, but for me personally they don't cause a headache any worse than a strong B&M rattle. Definitely NOT comparing the smoothness of those 2 manufacturers, just the effect it has on my head. Sorry they weren't able to stay around, though I'm not sure if schilke would have been at RMC if they were still around.
I’ve done 3, 5 and 7 on the list
1. What if Arrow had been successful in building the infamous "Fish hook" coaster?
2. Seemed like with Tennessee Tornado and X; they were on the road to recovery.
The fish hook coaster would've put them back on the spotlight for sure.
Good video. Very fun
Thanks!
I have ridden a few arrows and I dislike the rough transitions but the rest of the rides are really fun if you get past the pain.
I grew up riding viper at Darien lake
Was that a pun? Arrow are TRAILBLAZERS? Get it cause of the ride. Idk if it was intentional but I loved it. 😂
It was a half pun :)
Screamin' Eagle at Six Flags St. Louis opened as the tallest and fastest coaster in the world in 1976, two years before Loch Ness Monster. Screamin' Eagle stands 110 feet tall and goes 62 mph
Loch Ness Monster is 130ft
XscreamThrills fair enough so it at least took the height record but not speed
Top 3 best arrow coasters
3. Magnum XL-200
2. X2
1. Tennessee Tornado
Can't argue with that list!
Magnum is horrible tbh.
Viper is actually my favorite DL coaster
Arrow Dynamics: The original RMC.
They are one of my favorite manufacturers. I’ve never had headbanging on any arrow ride. I’ve felt no roughness on anything besides the transition into anacondas mid course. All their coasters have a little bit of jolt to them but that’s the charm. I laugh when I ride an arrow. It’s pure fun more than any other. Best coasters? No. Most fun, maybe.
What's your favorite arrow coaster?
@@XscreamThrills haven't been on many. Viper was really good. Didn't mind american scream machine too much either. The one at carowinds wasn't that bad either. Haven't been on much as lately I've become a serious enthusiast and many like vortex are gone
Best Arrow ride is Big One at Blackpool for me
Even if the ride isn’t very good I always enjoy a good arrow
Steel Phantom was the epitome of classic Arrow harshness
Lol
Did you know the course of Matterhorn was designed by some one that worked at Disney that had a huge fear of coasters.
I watched the documentary on Disney+, they talked about it :)
XscreamThrills I did not know it is now on Disney+ I would really like to see it again.
Dang! Unfortunately, they didn’t make the first smooth coaster.
It was rough, but I still miss great american scream machine
my fav Arrow Dynamics coaster is the Vortex at Kings Island.
RIP
@@XscreamThrills well my mom pre ordered a piece of track of the Vortex for me, which will be coming either January or February, it's capped in a metal case, also has limited edition postcards and a certificate to Authenticity, you can order some online an get a piece of Kings Island history.
Have you ever ridden Excalibur at Valleyfair? Because of you haven’t it’s really good.
I want to check it out!
Its days might be numbered😧
Arrow dynamics: the original imtamin.
schwarzkopf was the original Intamin (and B&M). That is where Werner Stengel started.
Yeah this was the original b and m. How intamin. They’re polar opposites
@@tiedough7481 cause intamin is always going out of their way to do new things and try new concepts. Arrow also did that, im pretty sure. Correct me if im wrong though, i was born a couple years after arrow went bankrupt
No arrow is the original RMC.
Bennett Veldman no the original RMC
Kind of sad to see arrow bankrupt. They probably would be doing so many impressive things if they were still around today!
Steel Phantom at kennywood.
It's not by any means a great coaster, but it is a fun family coaster at my home park, so I have to say Trailblazer at HersheyPark. It's a good first coaster if you don't want to ride Cocoa Cruiser, but aren't quite ready for Comet.
I always enjoy these smaller mine train coasters.
Corksrew at silverwood is still a decent ride
How good was Arrow's Orient Express considered by coaster enthusiasts? I thought it might make this list. Growing up in the midwest in the 80s it was seen as the baddest coaster around.
That ride was torn down when i was young so never got to ride it
Hey do you have photos of Apollo’s Chariot, Banshee, Wicked Cyclone, and Superman (SFNE) that I could use for a project? Credit will be given.
I do
I don't care what people say about the anicanda ,, its my fave ride.
EDIT:I can't spell
You forgot about vortex at Canada’s wonderland and the bay at kings island they are now the two best arrow suspended coaster😭
Wasn’t Adventure Express originally Indiana Jones theming without the rights to Lucasfilm? Paramount produced the Indy movies.
Not sure?
I appreciate what Arrow did for roller coasters but I was never really a fan of any of their rides except X2 😬
I can respect that opinion.
If they got new trains why not get some nice ones with a lap bar instead of over shoulder. Also make them more modern than the pointed ones that look like c4 corvettes.
➡️
Arrow Dynamics was the Oldsmobile of roller coaster manufacturers. They were very innovative, but other manufacturers beat them and Arrow fell behind.
“As everything in life, good things don’t last forever.”
RMC: Am I a joke to you?
Rmc hasnt converted a steel coaster... yet
Top Ten rollercoaster manufacturers:
1. Arrow Dynamics
2. RMC
3. B&M
4. Intamin
5. Schwarzkopf
6. GCI
7. PTC
8. CCI
9. Mack
10. Zamperla
You showed clips of vortex at kings island which was amazing and ground breaking at its time but instead you focused on aventure express which leaves me wondering why
Because I was discussing Arrow coasters that are still operating
@XscreamThrills not entirely true with the section talking about scream machine and shockwave
You are correct. I was also trying to through some light on their mine train models
Does coakscrew hurt bad
Not with The Viper at Darien Lake. Just make sure the shoulder restraints are tight to your chest when they lock them in place. They will pop up a little so there's a little room to move but that's a good thing. I've ridden that coaster since I was 10 in 1985. It's my absolute favorite coaster ❤ and the smoothest coaster ride in the park.
El Classico (Not Anaconda)
An over banked turn is a turn banked more than 90 degrees. You always get this wrong.
Magnum xl200 needs new trains.
NO "Orient Express" at Worlds of fun, no "Mine train" at Six flags over Texas!
S U C H. A. Q U E E N !! OMG. MARY!😘
hi
Was the trailblazer line pun intended?
Probably not... But since I'm a dad, puns are automatically integrated into my daily life lol
My first arrow was in 2008 on phantoms revenge but at that time it was only half an arrow. Now it’s a full Morgan except the lift hill. My second was corkscrew at cedar point then magnum I love the company but some huuuuurrrt. Anaconda is the worst one
Arrow Dynamics- The Roughest Coaster Company
@idkwhattoputhere Hey Vekoma has improved?
When I think of Arrow, I think of trash rides. Gemini is the only good one I have been on. Iron Dragon is fine, but Magnum, Cedar Creek Mine Ride, Corkscrew, Anaconda are all absolutely terrible.
And weren’t they all hand-built or something like that? I thought I seen somewhere that magnum was built and molded by hand so that’s why it wasn’t smooth... absolutely horrible ride experience! 😂
Both love voyage though right?
