I like the display of cards idea. That's a house rule I'd definitely use. It also gives players some direction when faced with so many choices. Nice one!
Excellent video, makes me more excited to get my copy which is arriving next week, like your use of house rules, my brother has not got this game so will give him your link.
I really love how subtly thematic it all is. It's not vanilla and it doesn't jam the theme down your throat, but all the actions costs "thematic" things and get "thematic" results. Glad I decided that Field Of Arle wasn't the only Uwe game I needed...
While I don't dislike the occupation cards, I do like the suggestion of your house rules. It's even mentioned in the rules as a suggestion you get to pick your starting occupation card freely for solo play.
The other negative of this game is the set up time. There's a ton of stuff to organize and set up. But that's what kind of makes the game as good as it is. The multitude of choices you have. I still love it.
It's not THAT bad after you have sorted all the goods the first time. If you have everything else in separate bags it's just sorting the gray tiles and get started essentially. Since there's so many occupation and weapon card you don't have to shuffle in between playthroughs either (and it's better to not get the same thing anyway)
After our first game we decided to go with "draw two cards, then discard one". This allows you to draw two cards and discard you already had on your hand and didn't like. After that change the game became a massively fun experience. By the way, you forgot to mention that when rolling the dice, if you fail you get a compensation. It is seldom as good as making the roll, but at least you wont have had an utterly useless turn.
I didn’t like fields of arle, but did like glass road. I think glass road was the only Uwe game I could stand so far. (also didn’t like Agricola, loyang or patchwork) Will I like this? Oh wait. I hate long set up time. Oh well...
One of my fave and most played games. Just seeing a mention of it makes me want to go play it right now. I've never tried your card row variant but I think I'll try it. Might bias toward first player even more, but most importantly, biases toward fun and useful.
Wow! You can play a solo game in 20 minutes?!! That's amazing. What am I doing wrong? Takes me over an hour but I guess I mull over my decisions quite a lot since theirs no one waiting for me to play my turn.
I may have been exaggerating. I just played solo again last week and it took me 40 mins, but I was thinking a lot. But there was one day last year where I definitely was playing quick as I knew what I was doing ruleswise and just blitzed through it.
I love this positive review, thank you. I had looked at Feast for Odin before but wasn't sure. I'll have to look at it again... #toomanygamestoolittletime

Yep. The explanation of why beans are square with respect to the feeding is great.

Well done, as always, Paul!
My favourite bit 11:03 When the honeycombs of doom feast on Odin's 3 rulebooks
Great review. You’ve sold me on the game. I haven’t played the game but your house rules sound like what the design should have been IMO.
Really like the card house rule!

Another game I'm yet to play, I think I'd enjoy it. I'll have to add it to the wish list, pleased to hear it solos well too. Enjoyed the review, thx.
Thanks for the review! I regret not picking up a new-in-shrink copy for around 45 euros when I had the chance!
wow. Yeah, I would have probably bought a second one at that price :)

Good house rule! And yeah, I forgot to mention the compensation, which is a really nice touch.
We use the same variant :)
another great vid, Paul.
Fantastic stuff, really helpful review.

I got so excited when I saw your face with this game and then... I realized it wasn’t a rules video. Haha.
sorry!
Gaming Rules! Lol don’t be sorry! Haha I bet it’s a beast to teach.

Still pretty quick though! Makes me wanna play again and not scrutinize my decisions so much. See if I can clock in under 40 minutes!
