I have a 2019 STI limited and I love it but at $40k it wasn't cheap. At least compared to other cars in its price range I feel like I'm driving something unique. At near $65k, it will take a special love and affection for the STI to drive an S209 home from the dealership.
The value proposition for the S209 over the base STI is that it's a limited run with a number of upgrades from the STI works shop. While there will always be those people who buy the base STI and add $25k in mods, the S209 seems made for the collector who will leave it unmolested.
YES!!!! Subaru brought the TMIC sprayer back into production! The last STi that had that option was 2006-07; easy to upgrade to either a CO2 or Distilled H2O and Methanol system. Think of it as a factory overboost system that gives extra power on demand, LITERALLY right at your fingertips.

22b would kill this thing around a track. I used to love subaru after having one as a first car, but to say their performance lines have been stagnant over the last 2 decades would be an understatement.
No it wouldn't. The 22b's only advantage would be its weight compared to the S209. But the 22b would be left behind starting at the first corner as its suspension is leagues behind that of the S209. And the boost response on the 22b is also much slower and requires a higher RPM - and at less power and torque output - than with the S209.
Yep, S209 is way faster than the classics... :D I owned a 2015 STI and now went to 2007 hawkeye. Tracked both quite a bit and the way the '15 put the power down and carried it through corners... The oldie squats quite a bit. Plus one thing that a lot of people forget and marginalise is the dual AVCS of the newer ones. That is the only difference between the two engines, but the difference it made both in fuel consumption and performance is crazy... In 4th, the '07 feels almost like hitting a wall whereas the' 15 ripped through it like it was 3rd gear. Both were/are set up really similarly - exhaust, intake, boost upped a bit, old one is making 295whp and new one was at 305. Not sure I agree with the boost statement though - the 22B runs equal length headers and a twin-scroll turbo. I have never tried one (only seen one around ever), but pretty sure it hits full boost by 3k RPM. My stock single scroll VF48 on the '15 hit 1,3 BAR by 3100 RPM, the ball-bearing VF34 on the' 07 feels pretty much the same.
@@VeliRajasaar Your 22b information is bad. Twin-scrolls were not used in the GC-series Imprezas. The first STi to use the Twin-scroll is the Version 8 (MY2003) - with the VF37 (standard) and VF36 (Spec C) turbos. The 22b used standard UEL headers and VF23 turbo. Also, the 22b hits boost later than the Version 4 Type R it is based on (and both are boost around 4k RPM). The slightly wider stance and Prodrive suspension make it a very good handler in the twisties, but it would not keep up with the later Subaru models - and in some cases, it would not even be close.
@@WannabeWRX Wow, I stand corrected, thanks! Dunno why I remembered that so firmly... Quick Google confirmed they did optionally run VF22 or the ball-bearing VF23. My bad and I feel bad :P
We don’t get the STI in the UK anymore. Theres a good selection of used examples with low mileage fortunately at Subaru dealers but we dont get the same range or options as they do in America. The new Impreza, XV and Forester are all CVT transmission, we cant get manual anymore. Subaru should give us a choice, and most UK Subaru buyers would prefer manual. Its wrong and I dont know why Subaru have done this here. They all have this isight technology (which only works with CVT) but im not bothered about that. I can use my own eyes to see where im going and whats around me. Too many people are bad drivers these days, they lack observational skills and rely on car tech to protect them. I will have to buy second hand if I want a Subaru with manual transmission.
Go do that please and watch them depreciate like crazy. The S209 is a limited edition, olny 209 will be made. I remind you the legendary 22B was a run of 424 cars and good condition ones are going for 100k+ now.

If you want to compare apples to apples, it costs the same as the Cadillac ATS-V and they have the same lap time at Virginia International Raceway. However, you'll probably never see another S209 on the road. You're more likely to see a Ferrari Enzo.
Oh cry me a river about the price... Does the ever elusive concept of "LIMITED EDITION" evade you all? There will ever be 209 of those. I'd like to point you in the general direction of the legendary 22B, 424 of which were produced. Please go look up their prices now (hint: crappy ones top 60k+). You can go have your cheap muscle, but that's what it will ever be - the Mustangs etc are your fast food sports cars that will depreciate like crazy.
If you can get the Mitsubishi Evo in the states.. take a look at that. They soared ahead in a battle lasting years. If you watched top gear of old.. then I'm sure you know all about it.
I had 2 STIs. An 03 and 04. $35k OTD brand new. Never in a million years would I spend double for esp for 36 more HP. They are smoking crack. There’s about 50 much better cars for that money. And why is this slower? They ran the same numbers back then with 305 hp.
You can see they bogged at launch. It should be running at least a 12.6-12.7 plus this test is probably way above sea level. Also, this S209 is faster than most or all cars at that price range on a road course. It shines on a track.
Actually in real terms the price has fallen, a lot. When the first WRX arrived in the USA in 2001 as a 2002 model year, the base price was $23,800. Adjusting for inflation that's today's equivalent of $34,650. Today a WRX starts at $27,500. For 8 grand less you get a much better car than was offered in 2002.
Bruh, the 2015 sti base yall tested did the 0-60 in the same 4.7sec. The qtr was faster in the 2015 at 13.2!!!! This car is stupid expensive for what they added
Frank Latin It did set a lap record. It’s extremely fast for a sedan. The only sedans that Car and Driver has ever tested that beat its lap time are the new M5s and some expensive Mercedes AMG car.
Hoping for a more sophisticated WRX when they transition to the new global platform for, I think, the 2021 model. Current Impreza has a split personality. The non WRX Impreza on the new platform is a much better car overall, but has no upgrades with a more powerful engine, while the WRX and STI are balls to the wall sport models. What Suburu needs to do is make the 2.5 liter from the Forester the base engine, make a sport model with a mildly tuned turbo, and a then the WRX with a more hardcore performance orientation. Hopefully they can switch to a turbo with good low end torque, like Honda and VW.
While I agree the S4 for performance, the new S4 is boring in terms of looks. I'm also disappointed in the lack of manual, even DSG for that matter (wonder if the 8s auto allows the engine to gurgle during upshifts?).
@@foxtrot685 With respect to the "gurgle," it most definitely does. The 8 speed, while not a DSG, is definitely more reliable as well. Unlike the earlier B8s with the broken down mechatronics. If other manufacturers, including Audi's very own SQ5 can have it, and work brilliantly paired with the same S/C 3.0 found in the B8 S4. I am sure it is still awesome enough to shift as fast.
@@hawkeye0642 What? Like the parts I've had to replace in some of the previous Subarus I have owned? I've owned about 7 or so. From non turbo to turbo, 4 cyl, and H6s.. So yes, im also well versed in Subarus. I do have to say the Hawkeye was one of my favorite front ends of the GD chassis.
As a Subaru owner and Subaru engine builder, this is a hard ‘no’ for me. A set of Ohlins Road and Track coilovers completely transforms the STI. A couple of thousand dollars in suspension bits will make any STI drive better than the S209. Reprogramming the ECU will net more power than the S209 without any sacrifice in reliability. Installing one of my billet-wheel-upgraded stock STI VF48 turbos will make 100hp over the S209 with with same spool characteristics. The Brembo brakes on all STIs are trash for track days. $2500 gets you a set of bolt-on AP Racing front brakes that actually work, reduce sprung weight, and even fit under 17in wheels. Other than the curb appeal and the limited-edition factor, I don’t see any reason to buy one. A regular STI with above-mentioned upgrades will cost less and perform better even after taking install labor costs into account.
You should really watch the videos about how this car was developed to appreciate it. It’s almost completely made by hand. It ran a 2.56 at VIR, which matches the 640hp CTS-V’s lap time according to Car and Driver. Think of it as Subaru’s version of a GT3 RS.
Joseph Miller the CTS-V weight an additional 700lb more than the S209. That’s huge! I’m not surprised a lighter car can do lap times of a much heavier car with twice the power. For example, one of my track cars is a 2500lb Nissan that only makes 280whp but on a road course keeps up with 400whp BMW sedans that weight in the 3200-3500lb range. It makes a huge difference in handling, acceleration, and braking.
Was watching some Best Motoring videos and a 95 STi did 1/4 mile in 13,319 secs, a 2015 STi in 13.2 secs and this does in 13.4 secs. I love STis, but spending this much on this car is a mistake imo.

Overpriced and over appreciated....like harleys and Michelin tires...lol
Hahahahha true
Otsenre s
Michelin tires are the best, btw.
GAY
I would be better with the cheap c8 vet , more head would turn when in a C8 vet
JEEZ!! That sticker price is a well equipped M235i/M2 PRICE RANGE... JUST 4 HAVING A S209 BADGE, IS IT WORTH IT?
93remix the M235i will be worth 15k in 8 years this is a collector’s car
@@f181234 I got that but... DAMN THAT! I DO understand exclusivity but this is a BIT 2 MUCH!
The only 3 BMWs that are faster than the S209 are the new M5, M5 Competition, and M4 GTS. That’s according to Car and Driver magazine.
That 22b. Delicious.
The S209 is a 2019 model.
THIS! That's what I thought that all 209 of them are 2019 MY vehicles
Porsche price tag wow....My volester N half the price at $28500 out the door
The 2004 sti ran a 13.1......wtf
The 04 STi is lighter than this STi to begin with
Still, in 16 years you would think they could break into the 12s at least
@@senseicorey9979 especially with 2.5 liters.
@@senseicorey9979 not if you're not increasing the power accordingly while the car gets heavier
The new car is 20+ seconds faster per lap around the VIR Grand Course track. Clearly, the quarter mile isn't something that Subaru cares about.
If I won the lottery, the first sports car I’d buy would be the WRX S209.
Overpriced
Tony Chau that’s an understatement
There's a Renault Megane going for 70k in Europe, this is a bargain in comparison.
It’s perfectly priced, since it is much faster than cars that cost the same or more money.
🤣🤣🤣
@@millll111lllI Okay buddy, I'd like to see this thing beat a ZL1 1LE
If you can get the Mitsubishi Evo in the states.. take a look at that.
They soared ahead in a battle lasting years.
If you watched top gear of old.. then I'm sure you know all about it.
I had 2 STIs. An 03 and 04. $35k OTD brand new. Never in a million years would I spend double for esp for 36 more HP. They are smoking crack. There’s about 50 much better cars for that money. And why is this slower? They ran the same numbers back then with 305 hp.
Driver mod 😂😂
You can see they bogged at launch. It should be running at least a 12.6-12.7 plus this test is probably way above sea level. Also, this S209 is faster than most or all cars at that price range on a road course. It shines on a track.
i don't get it i've seen 13.1 to 13.4 from a stock 2017 sti
I like it except for the Fast and Furious rear spoiler
13.4 at 105? I think we are lacking some driver.. or it doesn’t really make 340hp
Or it's just a bitch to launch.
same quarter mile as the 04
Overpriced for 340hp. I'm a subie guy I've owned wrx and sti. But this is outta hand almost 70k are you kidding me lol .......no way.
Idiots I'm not a subi guy and I'm still pissed🙆🏾♂️
Moron 😂 You guys see 340hp and have no clue what work STI put into this car.
Interesting the 0-60 and quarter mile time seem similar to the 2015 STI
Over the past 20 years the prices have risen for WRX, but not performance. BMW M340i starts from 54k and hase much more to give.
@@Guy_de_Loimbard not only that but the WRX had a major overhaul in 2015 (although not the STI)
Including mechanic repairs
I'm early this time...
I just hope when the new engine comes they do this again. It'll be more worth that kind of price.
I owned a 2007 sti it did 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. In 13 years subaru has gotten slower! They need to come up with something new! Very sad
Bruh, the 2015 sti base yall tested did the 0-60 in the same 4.7sec. The qtr was faster in the 2015 at 13.2!!!! This car is stupid expensive for what they added
If it was a regular production model the price would have been 20k cheaper
And it still would have been an overpriced, ancient turd..
$68k would need a Bryan Adams reference, because I think that equates to $33k in 1989 money. It could beat a TTA I guess...
John Davis 😍
$65k for this car? What are they nuts? Even if I had that kind of money I won't buy it. ( though it is a nice sporty car)
Wish the piston rings will last...
*ringlands
They're redesigned by now.
$64,000 for a Subie?! No way. Really like my 2015 STI, and with a few mods, it’s pushing 350 HP, and cost $15,000 less.
And yet itll never handle like the s209.
Definitely Gay
Unless this thing set some nurburgring lap time record it’s overpriced
Frank Latin It did set a lap record. It’s extremely fast for a sedan. The only sedans that Car and Driver has ever tested that beat its lap time are the new M5s and some expensive Mercedes AMG car.
With California tax and fees, and dealer mark up... let’s just say shy of $85k below $90k? I wonder who is the market for this price tag.
no $113k at one dealership with the markup crazy
Has Subaru heard of M2/M3 ?
I really want to know how many have been sold.
カッコイイ!S209は個人的にはリアウイングがない方が好き!
I could buy a camaro ss 1le and a Procharger and still save about $14000
That's apple's and strawberries
68k y'all trippin trippin
For that much? Audi S4 with a nicer interior, still awd, still a family sedan.
S4 why?
A rs3 is 65k and a better performance option
@@shawnz5272 Doesn't the RS3 have the Haldex AWD system?
@@hawkeye0642 What? Like the parts I've had to replace in some of the previous Subarus I have owned? I've owned about 7 or so. From non turbo to turbo, 4 cyl, and H6s.. So yes, im also well versed in Subarus.
I do have to say the Hawkeye was one of my favorite front ends of the GD chassis.
This would of been a fair power bump in like 2009.
My god I forget how sexy the 22b was. > every new Subaru. This is sweet tho but I wouldn’t spend that much on it.
$65k????? A Type R is much better deal.
ill take a 06 STI fresh from the factory plz :)
Thumbs for John Davis. Definitely not for this overpriced relic.
Pavel Osovets Well the CTS-V is the 3rd fastest sedan C&D ever tested. Faster than a 911 Turbo S, R8 V10 Plus, 2013 ZL1, M2 Comp...
Pavel Osovets Also, the CTS-V is on GM’s Alpha platform, which is a proven track performer, especially under the current Camaro
Was watching some Best Motoring videos and a 95 STi did 1/4 mile in 13,319 secs, a 2015 STi in 13.2 secs and this does in 13.4 secs. I love STis, but spending this much on this car is a mistake imo.
Dealership had one for me but was asking 75k plus taxes and fees was near 80k for a Subaru, so I passed.
What chu gonna do...SUBAHRU...thas what chu gonna do
The 4.70 to 60 is the same as it was in 2000
Tbh, I’d rather have the 22b.
Not taking away from the S209, still a pretty badass car....just a little too expensive for me.
Cannot do a performance valuation on a STI without commenting about the incredible turbo lag. You have to knock it back a few gears to wake it up
This is the dumbest comment I've seen yet.
John Davis still looking good. 👍
How well did the last limited edition Subaru WRX sell in the States? Isn't this just an ESX "red dragon" 5 years later?
64,000 what ?
