This came at just the right moment. I used to approach each canvas with the question "so! what do YOU want to be?" I had forgotten to ask that for a couple years or so now. I've been hiding from the canvas (silly me). I'm currently (even as I type) looking at this one painting that is still stuck in the early ugly phase. I think I need to walk away, then come back and ask it what IT wants to be. Thank you so very much for the reminder that art is always a collaboration with the piece itself. 💙💜

Awe, it's just "waiting for its turn" for when creativity strikes.
I had a total crap turd turn out to be not only amazing, but it sold within a couple of hours of hanging it. That's when I feel blessed by the Art God's 🙏

"Perfectionism" is taught to us in school, where anything less than an A+ is subpar and failure is not even an option. They teach kids this so that we are afraid to fail and grow in life and I think its intentional so that the poor and working classes don't compete with the ruling class.

    • @ariannefowler455
      @ariannefowler455 Год назад +3

Also, kids are taught "out" of themselves. Meaning, they are taught not to ask questions or trust their instincts. It's all about following a path that has already been set and they put the fear in you if you ever go off path. So much of art, if not all of art, is trusting yourself, asking questions and going off path.

It's not just the process, you're discovering yourself and who you are; that is a "major" thing people over look when making art.

Love the reminder to brace the process and work along with the creation. I believe we strive for our meaning of perfection- and the best way is to be honest with ourselves when creating - that is perfection.

I prefer to quit when it looks good and leave in little mistakes. I sometimes ruin paintings by overworking and fixing too much.

Yes! That is a great realization for me! The artwork is not MY creation. It is its own creation and it is just using me to be realized, actualized, brought into physical. Wow! I'm gonna go forward with my work with this in mind. Thank you!

YES YES very much this. I fell in love with crochet when I learned it because here was something where I was enjoying the process as much as the product. Whereas with sewing I wasn't (so I gave away my cloth stash to someone who enjoyed it more... and replaced it with a yarn stash). Perfectionism doesn't leave room for serendipity. Plus you make yourself unhappy. Also, the law of diminishing returns is a factor; there comes a point where you have to let a piece go because the level of improvement you are getting is not worth the time you are spending on it. At least, that's one way of putting it to yourself to enable you to shut up the little voice in your head which is saying "but it's not perfect yet!" It may not be, but it is "good enough". Besides which, sometimes the most satisfying pieces are the ones that surprise you, and you can't get that surprise if you are holding too tight to Control.

Minor course corrections! Yes! It's a constant dance of doing and reacting. Relearning experimentation is a great way to look at it. Sometimes, I'll give myself the assignment to go in and mess something up, just so I have something to respond to. It's a great way to stay loose and live in that space of play and exploration.

Exactly as art is intended to be. I'm a professional writer as well as a professional artist. My characters take on a life of their own and argue with me. Once I got freaked out when my character told a joke I had never heard!

Hi guys, I belong to a ladies' art group. Our ages range from 65 to 88. Recently, one of the ladies quit because she couldn't make her drawings have the perfect color. She wouldn't try mixing color because she didn't know which one to choose. 😢 so sad. She just couldn't let go and be imperfect. Perfection is the destroyer of wonderful art.

It's not just painting, guys. I can't tell you how many stories I've written where I thought I knew what was supposed to happen, and then the characters came along, picked up the story and ran away with it. It's frustrating, confusing, occasionally frightening, but it always results in a better story. Let it go where it wants to go.

I have never strived for perfection because I've always instinctually known that perfection doesn't exist. That said, I feel this message. The process is so much more enjoyable if you listen to what the art wants.

5:10 I am but the channel; I collaborate with the muse, the painting, some wait for another spark. I’ve one painting I’ve been trying to have a way to finish it arrive and I think it has. I think why I’m so quick at observation drawing is I’m not thinking to get perfect, I’m not thinking at all, it’s not accuracy but could you get a sense of the memory, the place from my art. Not whether it’s in proportion or looks exactly like the person. I’m responding rather than logically thinking
. I mean yes practice but I’ve always just gone for it . Also I’m not afraid to destroy it and fail, I push it towards failure everytime . Painting is perhaps easier as I can paint over it and have the ghost of the precious or sand it down and start again . I’m not precious and partly why I won’t buy the super expensive paints but even then I do whatever the art is asking . It’s tricky to put into words. I go crazy if I’m not painting or tactile something art related. I try not to worry if it’s good or bad. I base a painting more on whether I was present and focused without distractions, what did it feel like to create it .

I think we (Americans) get stuck in a conscious mode versus a subconscious mode due to school and brainwash. Drugs such as herb is frowned upon while caffeine and uppers glorified.
Productivity and focus is what we are wrong about in art, versus laying back and speaking to what our soul wants to say.
Say it and let it be. Move on to the next and next.
Kudos to those who navigate full time art. I cannot.

    Boy, you ain't kiddin' lol.
I'm dealing with this exactly NOW.
I'm finishing up a very large mixed media piece, "Glacier National Park" and I tried to "will" the piece to become a certain...thing.
Mwahh ha ha it has other plans🫤
I gave in, just "let it go"...and a section that's been the bain of my existence, the lake, figured itself out. All by its self🤗
Hells ya...you know, I really love you guys so much. Just wanted to tell you. I really only go out to get supplies, food, do my Art stuff, and for the most part I'm alone. I'm actually happy, in my own company.
Having such a great pair of people to listen to, who completely "get it" is truly the bestest of the internet.
This noobie thanks you both. You gave me the balls...to "put myself out there"...in so many ways.
Like the "everybody $h!ts" vid. It "brought" all the other "art people" and "art gate keepers" level to where I am. And I really needed that.
If "hubris" was acrylic paint, it'd be so thick in some galleries you'd get stuck 2 feet into the door. 🤣
