Kelham Island has the best pub crawls in the country, full of award winning pubs. Many people like to start out at the amusingly named Bar Stewards micropub on Shalesmoor. Right across the road from that is the excellent Shakespeares with its massive menu of hand-pull drinks. It is then just a short walk to the extremely popular Kelham Island Tavern. This amazing pub is the only venue to have won the CAMRA’s national Pub of the Year award in two consecutive years.
If you’re arriving to the area on the Supertram, the Shalesmoor stop sits right next to The Wellington, the tap pub of the Neepsend Brewery. From there is is a hop over the crossings to get to the likes of The Ship, a historical pub which has been refurbished to a high standard in the last few years. It is said that two seamen, possibly smugglers, drowned during the Sheffield Flood of 1864 in secret tunnels under the pub.
Probably the most important pub in Kelham Island is The Fat Cat.
But what if Real Ale just isn’t your thing? Kelham Island has pretty much everyone covered. The Kelham Wine Bar is situated just at the end of the Ball Street bridge alongside its sister venue Graffiti Bar and Kitchen, which happens to have a lovely cocktail menu as well as a funky outside pod dining area.
Sat atop recycled shipping containers at the Krynkl complex is INC, Sheffield’s first rooftop bar. Some of the best Beer Gardens in Sheffield can be found in Kelham Island, such as Riverside Kelham. Remember to nip across the bridge for a good view of the famous artwork by Phlegm on the wall behind here.
The Milestone started the revolution of Kelham Island as a food destination.
What a place Cutlery Works is! Located in and named after the old Rutland Cutlery Works on Neepsend Lane, this amazing building has 14 food outlets and 3 bars on 2 floors - making it the largest foodhall in the North of England.
A must-visit event is Peddler, a night market that takes place at 92 Burton Road warehouses on the first Friday and Saturday of every month. This incredible space houses a huge rotating assortment of street food vendors, drinks, makers’ stalls, art and live music.

Thanks for watching! Have your say: what are your favourite places in the Kelham Island area?
I enjoyed watching. Educational and professionally put together. Well done guys.
Thank you! Much appreciated. :)
Great guide James!
Thank you! 🙌🙌🙌
Excellent work James. Look forward to more of these.
Thank you! Just need to settle on what the next subject will be now... :)
Looks great , we're visiting for a day soon . Cant wait.
Don’t know how old this video is but we were in the area two days ago and there is much much more now including the Rex Market, which is new but not weekly and the Steel Yard which he referred to at the end and consists of bars restaurants and shops. It has a cool and modern vibe, which doesn’t include me but I didn’t feel out of place here. Also had a big screen showing football. We decided to walk around the area and discovered loads more hidden gems with breweries, bars and restaurants. How has all this happened ? Astonishing really. Up the Blades
Great! We will be there in December
this is incredible - never knew my boy was such an accomplished presenter. 13/10🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
THANK YOU!!! I'm not sure about the accomplished presenter bit, but from a legend like you I'll take it as a compliment. :)
Fantastic video so Awesome to watch ax it’s many years since I wax there Great job 👏
so good James! Big up
Thank you!
Great video, lived in Sheffield nearly 20 years ago and still call it my spirit city lol. Came back for a weekend 10 years ago and it had changed so much! 20 year anniversary visit is tomorrow but based on this video i think i need a week. Thanks for taking the time to record and upload
How was your return visit? Did you manage to try out any of the places in the video? :)
Oh wow, this Sheffield series is such a find! I'm moving there in 2 months and this will help me explore the city big time, thanks!
Nice one, looks way different since I was last there (12 years ago) loved the video and keep up the good work
Great film James!
Thanks Jim - much appreciated! 🙂
Great job
Thank you Giannis - always good to get nice feedback from a quality videographer like you!! ☺
Haha thanks!
Watched it from start to finish. You've done a great job. I will refer back to this video when I next visit Kelham
Great video! I keep filming little bits and going to put together a Kelham Island vlog too 👍 I've not been to Pina or the rooftop bar on Krynkl so got a few places to still check out!
Thank you! Send me the link when you post your video, I'd love to see it. 😃Piña and INC are two of my favourites in the area, so are well worth a visit - if you like Tacos you HAVE to eat at Piña, they are amazing! 🌮👍
Excellent insight into the area, updated my own understanding even though I worked and socialised down there for many years. Disappointed though that you missed out my favourite pub - The Forest, which if you were looking for an historic connection, was the last " Ale House" in Sheffield and is also the home of the Toolmakers Brewery.
Thank you Derek! Indeed I regret missing out The Forest/Toolmakers. There will always be scope for a follow-up video around there though and I'll be keen to make up for it then. Interested in what you mean by last "ale house" - I'm not aware of this history and always keen to learn?
@@DeejayoneUkHub Sorry for delay in replying but I didn't notice your question. Apparently it did not have a spirits license and could only sell ale until 1980 something.
Brilliant video ~ you missed out BattleAxe Urban Axe Throwing on Rutland Road, something different & unique to the area.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I actually made the difficult decision to leave Urban Axe out of this one both because it was starting to get too long and because I have a plan to hopefully do a separate video on alternative activities featuring it down the line, so look out for that! 🙂
Tried to write on the history site, but couldn't. Great film this, deejayone. It's remarkable how well this area has come along. So long as they don't allow many more buildings that don't fit in. I posted a film in history, did you see it? It's on my channel, called Driving in Sheffield - 2005 Kelham Island... I thought it would change a lot, and glad I did it now. It's unrecognisable.
Thank you! Funnily enough, I watched your video before filming this guide! It is incredible to see how much it has changed since you drove around there.
@@DeejayoneUkHub I noticed when watching again that the Milestone looked like a shell. I didn't realise it was just keeping the outside, and new built inside. Glad they did though. Loads of beautiful old buildings and factories around there.
I genuinely never went in there before it became what it is now so can’t say how much that place has changed. Lovely restaurant and bar now though!
Hi! Thanks for visiting. Remember to subscribe and set a reminder to watch the Premiere live at 7pm on Wednesday 8th May!
In the meantime, let us know what your favourite thing about Kelham Island is in the comments/chat! 😃
everything is red like brooklyn
If anyone's visiting it's at least a fiver a pint be warned to see loads of beards and push bikes
Fortunately this is a silly, stereotypical view. Plenty of places in the area do drinks for less than a fiver a pint and it isn't all beards and pushbikes. Of course, the video shows that for people to see for themselves. :)
@@DeejayoneUkHub sound let me know where a pint is reasonably priced and I'll be down 👍
I'm struggling to think of anywhere that is over a fiver a pint to be honest. Feel free to tell me where. In the meantime give literally any of the options presented in the video a try. 👍
@@DeejayoneUkHub the steelyard all a fiver a pint as I say get back to me when you find somewhere about £3.50 a pint .. isn't it Krinkel where the prices are extra outrageous ? And I didn't say over a fiver a pint.. I said a fiver a pint
I'm still to head to Steelyard since it opened to be fair. Looks great there though! I wouldn't judge the whole area on one place though!
Have you tried Gardeners Rest, The Forest, Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, Riverside, Harlequin, Saw Grinders Union, etc (to mention just a few)? All more traditional places with more traditional prices (although, outside of horrible Wetherspoons type places finding pubs that are
No more yuppies
What do you count as 'yuppies'? I'm not sure I've seen many yuppies around Kelham Island, but maybe I'm not understanding your meaning of it?
Please , change this awful music , put Def Leppard !
Personally I think Peddlers is ruining Kelham for the regulars, sure it's good for business but it's over-running the place. Too many people.
It has been since Peddlers started that the areas upturn has increased ten fold. Not a fan of it myself but has changed the area significantly
@@jimpriestley6693 totally agree mate, you get a different crowd on Peddler weekends.
An interesting point of view - and I can see what you mean to an extent.
At the end of the day it attracts thousands to the area every month, and that will always bring a more diverse mix of people with it. Plus it is only for two days every month, so not overbearing for those who don’t like it.
@@atnoprice I used to hate the Kelham Island Museum Xmas Markets and Vintage weekends, brought the area to a standstill with cars beached everywhere
@@DeejayoneUkHub yeah I can see positive side of it definitely, but the last 2 weekends I went out and forgot it was Peddlers (won't be making that mistake again) it's not fun being told you can't get in anywhere because they are full. I drink round there most weekends and unfortunately now I am having to avoid the area on Peddlers weekends.
So boring place
