- SHEFFIELD TOUR | Black Swan Walk : The SECRET hidden lane on Fargate you didn't know about!!
In this video we take a look at the little hidden secret lane on Fargate in Sheffield City Centre, 'Black Swan Walk'.
This hidden gem used to be called Black Swan Yard, but over the years has changed its name to its current one.
Black Swan Walk originally went all the way through from Fargate to Norfolk Street, but it was sealed off although you can still see relics from its past such as the winding wheel, and the turntable that was used for the old carts and coaches.
Sheffield has many hidden gems like this so subscribe to our RUclips channel for more!

Thank you for this video I’m proud to say I’m from Sheffield, I’m born here raised here and I’ll die here it’s my home and yes it’s changed but I embrace it it’s still beautiful to me 💓
Ah thank you!
It could be Sheffield's 'Shambles' with the right kind of investment!
That would be great 😊👍
...or Chapel walk?
That would be fab!
I'm a sheffielder born n bred an have been up n down fargate and up n down Chapel walk countless tines and never knew this lane existed,,, thanx for this I can't wait to have a walk down here the next time I'm in town,,,,sayin that I don't go to town much these days I can't stand how much its changed
thanks for watching. Make sure only to go down there during the daytime if you go 👍🏻
Sheffield born and bred...one of those things I've noticed but not noticed...always thought it was like the shops driveway....WOW!!!
Crazy isn’t it!
I remember this. I left in the 70s when I got married. My husband wouldn't take me back for 20 years, he said if I did I would never leave it. Too right. Love the place
Ah that’s great to hear someone else loves Sheffield as much as we do! 👍
@@SheffieldVideos My Dad used to be the Town Hall Bobby and take his mash can into the blue police box outside the Town Hall to mash his tea. Keep looking hard to see if its shown on one of your vids
@@ederkis We've filmed some videos of that exact spot! Coming soon..!
@@SheffieldVideos Oh that is great, I can't wait, thank you so much
I've always wanted to know what it looks like down there but haven't ever dared to go because it's just got dodgy people lurking down there and it scared me.
Thanks for making this video though, you've fed my curiosity 😁
You're welcome - I'd not recommend going down there, especially at night, but thought it might be fun/useful to film to show people!
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing this.
Mounsey Web Consultancy you’re really welcome. We upload a new video every day 👍
What a great video, love the editing and soundtrack. I lived in Sheffield 2000-2006, makes me want to revisit but I’m stuck in Australia!
Ah thank you - there's lots more on our channel of all kinds of Sheffield places!
Australia's a great place to be stuck in too!
I’m stuck in Sheffield, I’d happily swap places with you lol
Great video and brought back memories of living in Sheffield, from your newest subscriber.
Thank you very much!
Awesome lane waiting for a lovely revamp
Agreed!
Cheers, interesting, cant ever remember going down there, always thought its just a dead end...which it is, interesting historically though
Yeah it used to go all the way through to the Crucible Theatre etc but got closed off. You can see where it used to go at the end of the lane in the right hand side where the winding wheel is :)
please what about "black swan pub", did it still at the same place and just down " merry england"discothèque, what nice time we spend in 1972.
My family were Caretakers at both Cutlers hall and Channing Hall in the late Sixties / early seventies.
I remember well my mother taking my elder sister and me through the open back door of
the Grocers on Chapel Walk, across this lane to get into Boots by their side door.
As an aside; my sister, Rachel and I collected batches of The Star newspaper from the depot over the road and carried them to the Newspaper seller who sold it by the entrance to Chapel Walk.
Rachel was eight and I was five. I'm now a Senior Technician Supervisor at Birmingham City University (2021).
That must have been interesting Boris. all those nooks and crannies. I once heard a story of the caretaker at the Cutlers Hall from the late 70's, he was a friend of a friend and supposedly ex-army. However, he apparently used to get spooked by the statues and things in the Cutlers Hall if patrolling at night.
Interesting lane passed by the end many times, Arundel Street is worth a look many old buildings survive down there hidden from the main traffic.
True!
My Machins Auction Rooms were down that lane on the left .. How my dad got his Removal Van down that lane was wonder that would be mid 1950s
Crikey - it's such a tight squeeze down there I can't imagine any vehicles driving down it!
Part of the old network of inner city medieval streets. Chapel Walk is also one as is the little "dog leg" lane off Fitzallen Square that comes out near the tram stop.
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
A born and bred sheffielder all my life but have never been down that lane,as others have said it always looked like a place to get mugged.Very rarely venture into most of sheffield nowadays, moved to stocksbridge many years ago and i work in barnsley.May try to get down but i here all my favourite pub haunts have now gone so may just make me sad reminding me of friends now gone.
Hi Graham and thanks for watching our channel
This lane is an interesting one but I'd not recommend anyone go down there really
@@SheffieldVideos i used to go down there sll the time as a teen. the sketchy folk seem to keep to themselves.
@@sambenjamin7843 Ah good - stay safe mate!
Sheffield is my adoptive city...I took a wrong turn down there looking for Chapel Walk when I was brand new and didn't know my way around yet! Seems like I've been to more places than some of the home grown folk going by the comments lol
Subscribed, and gonna go look at some of your other vids now, ta duck 👍
Thank you! Yeah Sheffield people dont' tend to explore their home city enough!
I've been through there a lot and never new it was so non known
Yeah!
It's not, it's just a boring dead end to most.
@@SheffieldVideos No need to get personal.
Wish Sheffield council would invest more in fargate and lower commercial rates so people can take on the builds and keep them going!
Big plans for fargate now underway! looks great too!
Such a waste that this lane became a back alley way for trash...could be a cosy outdoor eatery like those in Lisbon, a little heaven tuck away from the main high street.
Definitely!
Brilliant.
Thank you so much for watching my channel I really do appreciate it ♥️
Love my home city!
Well said Andrew! Wish more people had a more positive view
Sheffield has given the world so much
Could barely contain my excitement watching this .😂😂😂😂
Yeah when I filmed it you weren't available for me to seek permission
If you had been I could have ensured that it was made to YOUR specific specifications and not for anyone else 👍
Not proud to say it but I think I used to have a piss down there on way to fitzalan Square to get a black cab late 80s/90s
Think everyone did at some point 🤣
I always thought that the old stones were for horse-drawn carts to park against and use as a brake to jeep the cart steady.
You could be right!
Handy little spot if taken short in taxi queue after nightclub in the 70s!!!!!
ha ha yeah I bet!
How old are the buildings please, as this wasn't mentioned in the video, which was brilliant.
Hey Diane,
Not sure - I didn't want to guess and get it wrong
Lots of info here though - www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/367-black-swan-walk/
I need to visit one day
You should!
It's funny I went for a drink with my dad last week we walked passed this lane and I said dad let's walk down Chapel walk to go brown bear but this is literally bang at the side of Chapel walk yet iv never ever noticed it madness
Yeah it's crazy isn't it. I grew up never knowing it was there too
@@SheffieldVideos some of the back lanes are amazing you can see how old they are there's loads around the west bar area
@@broughton90 Ah yes - I need to hunt those out and film them I think!
There was even a pub down there.... 🍺 WAWAW
I'd love to go to a pub right now!
That's the tidiest I've ever seen it. Normally it's overflowing with litter.
And huge rats
I've never really seen it messy
@@SheffieldVideos its been good lately as no takeaway boxes dumped all over. It was appalling when snooker was on
@@martynnotman3467 Nightmare - I try and avoid town when snooker is on - gets a bit manic!
I always thought it was romantically called Black Swan Walk because it led to a pub called that, but sadly, not!
Yeah there was a pub there with that name!
Demolished circa 1880, the Black Swan on Snig Hill then got the name.
@@SheffieldVideos Your video has no mention of that (although it seems a bit obvious that was a pub there of that name) only a mention of The White Bear - same building perhaps, with a change of name ?
Lets face it, it doesn't look great now.
True
Looks depressing! Just about sums up Sheffield city centre.
Sheffield City Centre is great - and getting better by the week
It was once called Britain's ugliest city in Britain's most beautiful location. that's was when steel dominated the city centre. The atorcities of the social housing estates although needed at the time are a liability now. The council is generally incompetent at big things like the tram to no-where and the Olympic sized swimming pools, and stadiums. The left wing understanding of economics proven time and again to be wrong. Yet as a southerner I spent two years and grew to love the people and the shabby character and beautiful location. I always thought it had a great future. But signs of globalist stupidity were already there when I was cursed in arabic by a Somalian burka clad old woman living in a better house than I was in as a student.
Opinions
Thanks for watching my channel - I really do appreciate it a lot ♥️
Where would you like to see me film next?
"Britain's ugliest city", I forget who called it that now but it was when the city suffered great over crowding due to the rapid growth at the start of the industrial revolution. You are right about the inept council and the Somalian ladies though.
Sheffield. Dump
Disagree
Fraid i absalutely agree ..in city centre ev morn for work and the beggars have taken over its horrible
Oh absolutely, Sheffield is a dump.
