Rothanak’s mask designs are amazing! And he works really fast! I asked him about making some Element Lord helmets and within a day he had 2 done! A little heads up though, he has stated that almost all of his designs have not been physically tested, so there might be some QC issues on some of the prints. So if anyone does print his stuff, let him know if the design was a successful print or if some sections need tweaking. Awesome to see you finally got your printer up and running Tammy!
Rothanak here, almost all of the movie masks have been tested on a resin printer so they should be fine. The only ones I’m not sure have been tested is the matoran komau and movie akaku. I just added a new version of that komau because I noticed some of the walls were a little thin.
Considering the price of Bionicle pieces for it's short run time, it honestly is looking more and more affordable to just getting into 3d printing, and try to reclaim my long lost tossed away collection that way rather than repurchasing everything.

I get that people prefer the mask of creation in the Thumbnail over the official, but i really do like the official one better. I think it fits in with the G1 style of masks much better. The other one matches G2’s design a lot more.
this is by far the most informative video on 3d printing I've seen so far. very cool and interesting. though I think I'll stick to shapeways for now since getting a 3d printer is not an investment I'm ready to do atm^^
You need more than a standard face mask to work with toxic odors. You are okay with minor exposure but going forward I highly recommend you get an actual respirator. N95s aren't good enough either because those are for particles exposed in the air, i.e., cement dust, stone dust, etc.
I love how this came out for you. I would love to get more into this. I'm def gonna try to get more into the Bionicle community but I have nothing but nervousness lol
It's okay, you can engage at your own pace however you prefer. Catch up on the story material, join a forum/server, or just enjoy some sets - it's all good :)
I believe the white marks on the prints can be solved by dipping them in alcohol rather than water. I've seen plenty of people do this and they don't have this problem. However, It may be really expensive and I'm not sure if the alcohol can be used again since they typically use a lot of alcohol in one container. Side note: is there any other mask from the art contest that fits on Gaaki?
There's a few from entries into the art contest. Once that contest is over I'll print out the winner and update the model. As for the white marks, thankfully the priming and painting makes it less of an issue, but I'm definitely going to try and reduce physical 'clumps' getting on the later masks.

Ah sorry. I did consider it, but given how fast products change and prices vary across the pond, thought the info would become out of date fairly quickly. The Mars 2 was about £160 and the resin about £30 for 1kg. Hope this helps!

@@TammyCalamity there are a few differences from physical models from what I can remember, most notably everyone having fingered hands. most other changes are minor, but I think some parts are replaced with others in-game for simplicity sake
For Gaaki's mask on the domed part there are those hints of visible squares. Do you know if that faceting is a result of the model or print resolution being too low to make that completely round? Or if the polygons in the model had outward facing tangents?
The fact that Karzahni's mask got warped is deeply amusing, considering the character.

Also I honestly kind of love the texture of the 3d printing layering on the pieces, makes them feel more "real" somehow.
Durability is the biggest issue right now. FDM can be good but I wouldn't use resin yet for anything structural.
@@TammyCalamity I'm surprised FDM is stronger, but I suppose the PLA I am using might not be as good as other FDM options.

By your recommendation, I bought a DLP printer. Anycubic Photon D2. I can't wait to try different resins out!

Also just throwing it out there, it's UV cured resin, mind the windows and sunlight.
I wish I could get a Toa Mahri Kongu eye/brain piece 3D printed in trans red. It would correct the eye color for one of my Mocs.

It's uv resin. You are printing it in a room with tons of uv light. Try putting a box over it and your resin should be better

Maybe you could try Resin Printing Bionicle Connector pieces so maybe you can color limb connectors that don't come in certain colors

I noticed that too. It's the model file; maybe it's part of the reason why Galva doesn't like it :\
Is it possible to get resins in opaque colors to skip the painting process or other transparent colors?
'Opaque' resins do exist, but getting and exact color match will vary by brand, and it will cost more to buy different coloured bottles
