43 years ago we sang it as high school seniors, and it was everyone’s favorite. 40 years ago, we all came home from college to sing it again at our beloved choir teacher’s funeral - and to hear it performed so beautifully here makes it all seem like it was just yesterday.
This is the exact version I sang in High School choir! I'm so grateful for a Christian choir director and a supportive school that focused on such Christian songs. Thats definitely not as it is today.
They still sing it every year at the last concert at my Alma mater, 24 years after I graduated and still going
This is the best of all the arrangements of this song.
I am proud to say that Shawnee Mission East choir sings this song every year for our last concert to say fair well to the seniors

I went to east and I randomly saw a cup at my buddy’s place with the lyrics on it, he never went to east but that got me to listen to this and it brings back so many memories of choraliers and gender choirs and the freshman choir. Man those were good times!

Woke up today with this song in my head. It must be a sign for a good St. Patricks day.
My dad passed just recently and he used to belong to a barbershop group and they are going to sing this at his memorial service because it was his favorite.

I also sang it in my high school choir. We sang it as part of my graduation ceremony. I remember my part along with all the running back and forth to the risers and back to the graduate section.
As did I & my brothers & sisters, in our beloved high school choir. (1972, 74, 76, 77 Grads.)
Tho sadly, beautiful hymns like this are likely no longer permitted in public schools, I will forever love & remember this treasured arrangement of this dear, priceless, truly exquisite song & will hold it deep in my heart for all time.🙏♥️🇺🇲✌

My mom used to sing this in her show choir the Buffalo Grove High School Expressions as a tradition that always ends their annual spring show in 1986, and 1987! What a true melody that sinks inside your mind!
BG Expression here 2008-10! We sang it at the end of Big Show every year, and the group continued all the way to their final Big Show in 2017. ❤️
This version brings back such wonderful memories of HS...We sang this in A capella Choir when I was 17...funny thing was that because I sang 2nd Alto and we never had enough Tenors...you guessed it...I sang Tenor, LOL! I sang this in my high school choir. So lovely! Wish I could find accompaniment for it now. I'd like to sing it as a solo, although it would never be the same as with a whole choir!

Our high school choirs come together and sing this every year. It's such a beautiful song. I'm currently a freshman who never really connected with the seniors, but I felt so sad and depressed to know that these seniors are leaving, moving on with their lives. It's just so hard to swallow it down.

I sang this song in high school. I wanted to cry while I sang this song in choir.
So did I on both counts. We also played it before the start of my Dad's recent remembrance gathering, and somehow I had the ability to also sing the chorus one time a capella during the service as what we wished for him and what we know he would wish for us. ♥
We're performing it at my high school tomorrow night. I'm gonna cry.

Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ occasionally used this piece as the benediction hymn when I was a Bass/Baritone in the choir.
The Peterborough Chorus sang this at my son Ian’s memorial service in 1994 .... moving and something I will remember forever....

I've just heard this piece on TV, so I come here, search for it, and to my biggest surprise turns out to be composed by a Hungarian born composer. Árvay's name has so far been unknown to me as it is I believe to a lot of other Hungarians as well. It's a shame he's not more acknowledged over here.

We always sang this song @ graduations except our version wasn't upbeat like this one... it had a more solemn & sad quality to it. You COULD NOT resist crying your eyes out. Lol, I LOVE this song & i hope it stays w/ me 4ever. =)

I am now a choir director by profession, but have beautiful fond memories of singing this gorgeous piece in high school many years ago. It has always been one of my favorites. I'm absolutely thrilled at the wonderful choral blend and the musical expression performed by this fabulous choir. It is almost exactly how I would have my own choir perform it. What a treat to have this caliber of a performance on a recording to enjoy! May I ask what choir is performing on this recording? I'm almost positive it is an extremely talented and well trained high school choral group. Kudos to the director!

@pathwandering Hard copy available for ordering on the J.W. Pepper choral music website. (do a search for "Old Irish Blessing" and then find the Agay arrangement). This will include the piano accompaniment and all choral parts. I sang this in high school, and I'm going to buy myself a copy!
The song should be attributed exclusively to Denes Agay. A google search will lead easily lead to the sheet music to confirm this.

When I first heard this song a few weeks ago I cried because my bird sky passed away at the time and 3 month ago a day after Christmas my other bird blue passed away. I got over blue’s death now I’m starting to get over sky’s death edit: I clucked on this video and my dog, Brockton died 4 months ago of kidney failure. Now here I am, bawling my eyes out. I’m closer to getting over his death but sometimes I just miss him.
