It would be great if TED would not show the presenters using ASL at side angles. It’s hard to understand(especially the finger spelling!) the signs from the side.😕
Wow! I am going to share this video. She is explaining exactly what I attempt to share with my hearing friends, family and strangers. I am hearing as well, but I am earning a degree in ASL and Deaf Studies. Justina Miles is an amazing presenter!!! 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
"they did not know how to measure the quality of thought of deaf people if they did not know how to speak"... that!! exactly that!! What a pity the video goes off exactly on that bit.
could you import slide video's captions? not all of us are american, or know asl, but we'd still like to see the person presenting. and captions can help with reception, if you're not fluent tip for future talks. i like the big presenter, but maybe integrate slides or other materials into the upper corners, reverse picture in picture. and bit more zoomed in. legs ain't needed, smaller picture means her signing is more "silent". also better to film frontal, if you have to film at an angle, then max 45° angle, makes it easier to understand eg 8:29 is good.
Rebekah Afari’s presentation was also great and informative, and she had pretty fingernails, but she wasn’t as showy and dramatic. It wasn’t all about performance…
What a cold take thats like saying it would be easier to understand someone without their accent, her hands are her voice and they are a reflection of her personality and upbringing!
Justina is a Deaf Performer. It's literally part of her practice to be more animated or expressive than most are. Also, some people have a different signing style than others, I think it was beautiful and perfectly true to who she is. Her culture outside of being apart of the Deaf community does not water down what she was saying.
@APValerius I agree with you. I am an ASL student earning my Bachelor's degree in ASL and Deaf Studies. I am going into my 4th year next week. I also completed my interpreter training program and got an Associates degree in ASL interpreting. Recently I got licensed to interpret in Mississippi. I will honestly say, I still have A LOT to learn about ASL and Deaf culture. I did not improve my receptive skills until I began to immerse myself into the Deaf Community. Now I can recognize that I have trouble understanding Justina Miles because of MY lack of experience communicating with a fluent signer, with her accent, speed... everything that makes her who she is... ❤❤❤❤ She does not need to change for me, I need to grow so that I can communicate with everyone I encounter in the Deaf/deaf community. Another person mentioned the camera angles and distance was a bit of a problem, and I agree with that. But, really we just have to keep improving ourselves. Not everyone has perfect hands. Some signers are missing fingers, have severe arthritis and other issues. We have to do our best, period. I hope I don't seem angry or rude because that is not my intention. I am just sharing my experience.
@APValerius It’s just that I don’t like fingernails that look like weapons or talons. The fingernails are distracting. I don’t like those kinds of fingernails on anyone. What is the purpose?
As far as I understand, that’s actually her voice. She probably pre-recorded the script. I see in Justine’s instagram that she speaks while using ASL there

Your star continues to rise as you spread joy, hope & a message of strength👏🏼. Thank you
As a hearing mom raising a deaf son and learning ASL I needed this as my reason why and to share with other family members. Thank you ❤
You are an amazing, vibrant storyteller. Please keep advocating for the Deaf/HOH community and ASL education! 💜💜💜💜

so vibrant, loved every minute!
18:51 Her-walk off is TOO iconic 😩😭✋🏾
Wonderful talk!
This is a great video with a great lady!
Yes ma’am!!!!
brought to tears. thank you justina!
I’m not sure if this can be addressed, but in case it can: the captioning of this video has many errors.
Video: *about the issues Deaf people face*
Captions: *auto-generated*
.
Really??
Solid! xo

No one asked your opinion. Spend your time spreading Justina's message instead of judging her. She knows what she is doing
@@sunni6017 I like how animated and expressive she is. I just really can’t stand those fingernails. They look like weapons or talons.
@@roxanaduval6650 well then its a good thing they're her nails and not yours.
Great message. It would have been easier to follow without those long fingernails.

Beautifully expressed but I find the nails very distracting.
ASL interpreter reading the paper she didn’t wait until she start or finish only read the paper. 🙂↔️🫨

Yes, that’s Justina’s voice. She delivered her speech in both languages.
Yes. I thought it was very cool that she did her own speech ahead of time. She is such an innovator. 💡❤
