The Crossplane has that sound that's similar to a V4, it's unique. I can't decide which is better because I like both. It was in a motorcycle race when I heard for the first time an R1 Crossplane. A very different sound compared to the others. Actually I thought I was listening to a V4 until I had a closer look and I could see it was an R1. I remember I thought: "why does it sound so different?" Now I know why

i like the crossplane more, it sounds angrier and stronger than the flatplane, the reason, its four words, *HEAR CROSSPLANE IN PERSON*, really, i know why people hate it, because videos dont do justice, they distort the sound with their potato mics, and that makes the crossplane to sound stuffy and dry, trust me, after u hear one R1 crossplane in person, you will fall in love with the crossplane, i was a crossplane hater too, but now i love it

Somehow the high revs in this video were more often done on the flatplane and therefore difficult to say. Not the best comparison to be honest. From solely this video I would tend even to the flatplane which is weird because in other comparisons I always was more into the crossplane. 😵💫🤷🏻♂️
The flat plane crank sound is so much freaking smoother. I don't like the cross plane sound at all. Which is kind of weird, because I love the sound of a 3 cylinder -- which is a sort of tri-plane crank -- and it still sounds much much smother than a 4 cylinder cross plane crank. But amazingly, it accomplishes this with one less cylinder and yet, it still only sounds slightly less smooth than a 4 cylinder flat plane crank.
The flat plate is definitely a smoother more efficient running engine at lower rpm. A lot better fuel mileage too. The Crossplane doesn’t really smooth out until it’s over 8000rpm if not more.
@@JT2JZ I guess the cross plane crank has an uneven firing spacing; something like this P....P....P..P on the power strokes--I've seen some simulations of this. I'm not sure why and, I haven't really worked it out in my head. It would seem like evenly spaced out crank positions (90*/90*/90*/90* four even positions), with 4 strokes per cylinder, and with 720* (degrees) or 2 full rotations per cylinder to complete their respective cycles, you would think you would still get an even firing spacing, but I guess somehow it doesn't work out that way.
I have a video on my channel explaining this exactly if you want to check it out. You are correct. Two full revolutions firing at 270/180/90/180. So basically two cylinders act somewhat normal and two cylinders are dramatically different to get that unique double power pulse event.

@@JT2JZ had my 2012 FZ1 for 8ish years now, got a few mods done and recently dropped a front tooth to 16T and slapped on a PCV. Got a couple more updates on hand looking for a quickshifter too. Flatplane always had my heart!
The cross plane sounds good at idle but not being ran through the gears. Almost sounds like a Ducati/Aprilia V4 and they too sound great at idle but meh under throttle
I almost think the opposite. The Crossplane almost sounds like a common 4 stroke dirt bike to me at idle. I like the sound of the rpm’s as they climb under heavy throttle
@@JT2JZ it felt like the bike was gonna die but I either rode out the clutch a little longer or give it more throttle and it was fine, just surprised me how aggressive it was.
I got a 2008 r1 and a 2010 one....no comparison. The pull the crossplane has it is spmething nobody could understand if you dont drive one.the 08 in comparison feel like a baby bike
I agree. The Crossplane is the fastest bike I have ever owned. I verified it at the track as well. It’s ran a 10.4 @ 136mph in the 1/4 mile. My flatplane r1 ran a 10.7 @ 132mph
Flat plane sounds better, just seems to rev cleaner. 2012 is a stunning bike but that uneven firing cycle.. just dosen't tick the right boxes for me..lol.
The flatplane is definitely a very well balanced machine. Runs perfect at any rpm and any load. My crossplane is very lumpy a lot of the time if you are to low of rpm just casually cruising around town.

I am thinking about getting a 2013 R1, during takeoff it was very jittery at low RPMs until about 3000 RPM. Is that a normal thing on these bikes?
Yes it is normal. They do not run very smooth / efficient at low rpm with the Crossplane crank engine

You do need to ride the clutch longer with a lot more throttle input unfortunately.
It’s definitely my least favourite characteristic of these bikes.
They vibrate like crazy if bogged down in the low rpm range. Very unpleasant
