Good job on putting the small screw back in the starter coil. I just worked on a modern Briggs and Stratton engine someone tried to repair and then stopped several months ago. In that time they lost a lot of screws, bolts and parts. Put them back or bag and label. Love the intro.
I'm getting a lot of pleasure from this episodic restoration/resue. Their is just so much to it. The engine is more like a very large mower engine. " so you cut down trees you say son?"

Spot on that using the wrench on a socket like that :) All them years traipsing over to the tools and finding the ratchet or bar when it was somewhere else ridiculously obvious lol
Got tickets for makers central show next month. This is by far the best restoration channel on RUclips in my opinion. Can't wait to see you in person and buy one of your mini wrenches, please put one by for me I will be there on Saturday. 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Need sanding, sand blasting and filing. Also sanding after primer and before painting. More polishing as well. Very nice selection on restoration project.
My Dad was a McCulloch dealer in the 70s and 80s. I remember having a 99 under the workbench in the shop for years. It was just the engine, Dad always wanted to find the rest of the parts for it and get it running but never did. He got out of the business in 1988 and that saw went to the scrap yard. I've often thought about finding one to restore.
I love your videos so much and I wanted a wrench like yours for so long so I just bought one from your site. Keep up the good work. Now I will wait for my wrench to arrive (after december 2019....😂)
I’m starting a Model 99 rebuild now (2022). I wanted to ensure that the PTO side oil seal could be replaced. To get the clutch off, I used a 4 pin socket tool that is normally used on a Toyota hub locknut. The “off” direction is counterclockwise. I was able to remove the clutch working against the compression with a 1/2” drive electric impact wrench. No damage to the clutch or tool. For reference, “OEM Tools #25969” available at Amazon and parts stores. Your videos are very helpful.
The points and condenser are placed under that external cover (instead of under the flywheel) for easy service access in the field. Don't have to tear half the saw apart to service them. Most of the early Macs were set up that way. Kohler and Clinton 4 stroke industrial engines such as the K series singles (and others) had similar points/condenser placement. Mac went to a 'conventional' under flywheel placement later to eliminate that long pushrod (which would float at the higher RPM's that the newer designs were running at). Back when this saw was designed, the "standard" chainsaw layout didn't yet exist. The manufacturers were making it up as they went. This was the era of the transition from saws built with industrial style engines running big gear drives (and driving HUGE chains) to smaller/lighter/more compact gear drive and direct drive saws running MUCH smaller chains. Saws like this Mac 99 (and the 1225 and 7-55) were a 'bridge' between the old monsters like the Mercury/Disston KB7AY series and the big Titans and IEL's and such to the newer designs. RP McCulloch was an eccentric genius. His carburetor/fuel systems were particularly nuts. The carb assembly on this saw will barely fit in a shoebox. Within a few years, the Tillotson HL, the Walbro/McCulloch "flatbacks", and the later "cube type" Tillotson HL, Walbro HS, and all those that followed did the same job with a fraction of the size, weight, and complexity.
@@Eccentric5B thanks for the Information. The only reason i thought it looked wierd is because i have only worked on engines that had points and condenser under the flywheel.
At 26:50 you ask "Do you like that, woodworkers?" That popped on screen about 3 seconds after I thought, I bought all my chisels for woodworking...50 years ago. And it took me about 20 years to realize they can be used for a lot of other things and suffer ZERO actual damage. I was betting the woodworking purists were wetting themselves as you chiseled away at old glue. Then you basically made a joke of it. Very cool.

You are definitely my favorite vintage tool ruiner on RUclips. Lots of other channels try to cop your jam, but screw them. The original is where it's at.
I noticed you use tee-shirts for rags. The rag you use at 21:00 is local to me in southern Indiana. Long way to Canada! Kinda cool seeing something local to me on one of my favorite channels!
There's a guy called Jereme Bell, he's been working on porting and hotting up old McCullochs and making some unavailable parts. I'm sure he's never done one of these but it would be fun to see it tuned up. He has a new channel with only a couple of videos, guess you can find him there if interested. Can't wait to see this thing cut!
Thank god I just watched this, I got an old 70's chainsaw that yellow, prob the same led based paint and I was about to start sanding it today. I do what you did instead.
It's a wood chisel. WOOD! Ya hear me? That clutch would be on fire by now if that were me, patience isn't my forte. Can't wait to see this one finished.
Might be a little late but you could have tried an air chisel with a blunt tool in place of an actual chisel to get that clutch flange off. Put a block of wood in the combustion chamber to eliminate the bounce the rope would have given.
Honestly, finding corn is hardly surprising. I would have bet this was kept in a barn or something and probably just had a sack of deer corn nearby or on top of it that leaked some. I see that all the time where I live.

That old style wrench is the “GOAT” of wrenches is there anything it can’t do. As always great content. By far the best restoration channel.
I’m amazed at all the small intricate parts the saw has. How you’ll ever get it back together is beyond me.
Good gravy it's like this thing was stored in an oily saw dust pile! Great job cleaning it up!

That is a funky placement of the points and condenser.
Everything about this saw is horrible.
