I'd be inclined to do this with channels, and use a funnel to fill... but I'd like to try it. I usually use white rice (rarely eat it, but use it for hot packs!) Thank you!
I like the idea of sand. I really like the odorless aspect as I have asthma and some scents choke me up. I'd use it. Thanks for sharing because I never knew lava sand existed.
Would you recommend a layer of batting under the cotton fabric to give the bag more structure? I guess it would need to be all cotton batting if used in the microwave.
You would definitely need everything cotton (fabric, batting, thread...) for the microwave. I'd worry adding batting too might decrease the heat you would feel. Instead, I'd sew channels - maybe 3 sections in either direction depending on your preference - to keep the sand from all lumping together. Hope that helps!
I would sew a sand sack permanently sewn closed out of muslin. Then i would use the pretty fabric and sew a removable pillow case. This way, the pillow case can be laundered. These heat packs can get smelly from body oils and perspiration. Thanks for the tutorial.
oh that's so subjective - unbearable to me is warm to my husband. I would recommend you go to the website and ask them for more details as they have more experience with heating times, etc. lavaloo.com - good luck!
What do you think? Does the idea of more weight from your heating pad sound good? Will you give Lava Sand a try?
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing this with us!!
You are very welcome!
Whoa baby!! Just found out how expensive lava sand is. I may have to hold off on that experiment.
Yeah... it's not a "whim" project for sure.

Definitely like it. I'll be making it ❤
Enjoy! I don't know if you read comments but someone suggested using a funnel to add the sand... why I didn't do that is a mystery!

It was new to me too. Not the least expensive option but a good one for people who are sensitive to scent, like you mentioned. 👍🏻
Very cool. I would sew a closure at the top and leave and opening, use a funnel to add the sand.
Huh… wish I’d thought of that! 😂 will do it that way next time (come to think of it I think I did that with flax seed and rice… 🤦🏻♀️)
👋👋. Very interesting. Had to chuckle at your 🤦🏼 about the funnel. We’ve all had those moments. Have a great weekend
@@peggersf9709 Right? 🤣 Have a great weekend as well!

I have done them that way as well - great reminder - thx!
How hot can it get? I like a heat pack to get hot to almost unbearable heat.

I always use muslin with my fabric. That way I feel safe. 😂
Smart! 🌟
