Queen Margrethe has just provided her cousin King Charles III with the precedent to go ahead and remove the royal titles from the children of his youngest son. These children will grow up outside our Royal Family in the US and there is no good reason for them to have princely titles.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 года назад +14

Margrethe II is not the first to do this. On 7 October 2019, Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden issued a statement rescinding the royal status of Prince Carl Philip's two children (at the time) and Princess Madeleine's three children in an effort to more strictly associate Swedish royalty to the office of the head of state; they are no longer styled as His/Her Royal Highness, but their princely titles remain and they are still duchesses and duke of their provinces, remaining in the line of succession to the throne. Carl Philip and his wife and Madeleine commented that their children now will have greater possibilities to shape their own lives as private individuals.
In the Netherlands, a distinction is made between members of the royal family and members of the royal house. Membership in the royal house is lost to persons who are still in the direct line of succession, but are no longer related to the current monarch within two degrees of kinship. When Willem-Alexander assumed the throne in 2013 this applied to the three children of his brother Prince Constantijn.

In 2019 the King of Sweden stripped his five younger grandchildren of their titles and removed them from the line of succession. The children of Crown Princess Victoria retained their titles and styles. So it seems to be the current trend in the nordic countries.

One has to assume as stated in the video that those close to Queen Margarethe would have known of the amendments. This is Royal Court protocols and the decision would have ramifications that must have been discussed at length with those involved. Sometimes the press needs a juicy tidbit to play with and who knows, maybe Niikolai and Felix are content. The two youngest of Joachim are not really impacted. Pressure is now off.

King Charles III also plans to decrease the size of the British monarchy, so Margarethe II beat him to the punch on pertinent announcements. It does seem odd, however, to remove titles that have already been granted to grandchildren nearly grown. I agree with you that the children are probably better off this way in the long run.

As a Dane, I did speculate as to why Margrethe 2 would remove their royal titles. Making them merely ‘highnesses’ rather than ‘royal highnesses’ would not really have achieved more than confusion. Today, September 29, Queen Margrethe has specified, that this will allow her grandchildren, through her second son, to have careers without having to consider potential ramifications for the Royal House. Her oldest grandson has worked as a model. In this way he needn’t turn down work of a questionable nature: such as commercials for Ecco shoes, who might still have factories in Russia…

You can't live an independent life with normal jobs if you are royalty with titles. I think they are not even allowed to go and live outside of Denmark, by law and custom. Without the titles they can now try to live their own lives, date and marry whomever they want without having to be mindful of being criticized constantly for not acting 'properly' or have to be mindful of other people with selfish agendas who will use them for their own benefits (Prince Andrew of UK comes to mind) and get into all sorts of problems. Besides, Joachim and his children are not directly in line to the throne as Frederik and his family are. Joachim has also said that he's always been frustrated by having no official role other than be a 'spare' with no defined responsibility or authority - just a stand-in for Frederik and it can grate on you after awhile. This way he and Marie and the children can probably go and live in France at the family estate Chateau de Cayx or his beloved Paris. I think it is a good thing for everyone involved.

It is unfortunate that Prince Joachim of Denmark and his families were not better prepared and briefed concerning their modified roles as members of the peripheral royal family. The great advantage in my opinion was that scandals such as those around the Sovereign's second son in Britain could be avoided, and these "non-working" rooyals could have relative peace and privacy to earn their own living and enjoy their lives as citizens without being constantly in the limelight. Obviously, government stipends were not forthcoming for all of them, so they need to be able to support themselves without disruption and excessive conflict of interest. It was a pity that Queen Margarethe did not prepare and educate them sufficiently for the change. She does not have the huge court machinery available in Great Britain to educate the royals, and even that machinery has been unable to avoid scandals. In fact, ugly divorces and embarrassing sex scandals are more prevalent in the Windsor family than in most British families today. It's on Prince Joachim's interest to preserve the Danish monarchy, and he is not being very gracious about it. As the father of a blended family and a man whose ex-wife has been treated extraordinarily well, he really should have more common sense. I am sure King Charles III will also be reining in his royal family. Britons are in favour of the monarch by a significant but not immovable majority and it will be best to behave with less extravagance and more economy in a country and real,s with masses of working-class people some of whom are suffering quite severely from poverty and other economic disasters. This is difficult because no one likes to tighten their belts and also because a lot of expensive theatrical pomp and ritual is expected of the KIng and the working royals. Finding a middle way between extravagant display and frugality won't be easy. Fortunately, Kind Charles is a man who likes to think about global issues and who has a life philosophy of his own so with the right help he may manage it - which also means firing a load of fuddy-duddy old courtiers. He's spent a long time thinking about the job. I hope the same is true for the Crown Prince of Denmark too, and I hope some very wise people, including his mother, will take him in hand and get him ready. The job is a lot more encompassable than that of the British King. The royals all over the world are in an existential squeeze, and it's no good whingeing. What they need to do is live up to the challenge with grace and magnanimity!

I'm sure this is a conversation point btw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at their court in Montecito. There are parallels btw Prince Joakim and Harry, Both married unsuitable women, both were older than them. Countess Alexandra after her divorce was kept in style until her children were 18. Both of her sons are not willing to perform princely duties. They found service in the military to be boring, so they are not suitable to be modern day princes. Modern royalty requires the notion of service, if one prefers a celebrity lifestyle ( modeling/acting) that is about self promotion, not service.
Countess Alexandra after her divorce married a playboy and later got divorced again. She has done some public displays which are not appropriate. There has been some rivalry btw the two princes, so it is likely that the Queen of Denmark wanted to settle this since she is getting older and not have it as an issue between the brothers.

That is the same as telling a teenager, "Oh, by the way your name isn't Smith anymore, it's really Jones. We decided we didn't want you to have that name anymore." Should King Charles III tell Anne, Princess Royal she has no title now with her living her entire life with that title? From what has been said about her, she is one of the hardest working royals. Wonder how the public would feel about that. If the queen was going to do this, she should have done it before the children were ever born. They have to be devastated and feel that "Granny" is showing favoritism. Frankly, I would go NC with her. She's just trying to win brownie points with her subjects. Working royals get paid. While it does limit them from making money in certain ways, couldn't that be worked out so that if they agreed to be circumspect regarding a job or profession, they could keep their titles?. Seems to me that Countess Alexandra is like the MM of Denmark but with talent. 😜Perhaps king Charles can look at this and get ideas 💡☺️

    Ridiculous announcement!
    Count or Countess
    Is no more or no
    Less in the forefront
    Than prince or
    Princess! These
    Children are being
    Excluded from their
    Rightful status!
    The Queen should
    Be ashamed of herself!!
