Oh, so it was supposed to be "Olden Talk" instead of "Engrish". But does the rest of the game have Olden Talk? I don't think I recall hearing any "Thou" like the US localization of Dragon Quest. So at least not that old. It bothers me a little because it sounds phonetically identical to "What [sound] do you hear?" 😂
Am I understanding it correctly that it means "what are you doing here" or maybe "what do you do here"? If so, it's interesting that it's identical to the structure used in Swedish (and some other languages I assume).
"As you can see, this is a PlayStation Black disc. Cut number one contains computer data, so please don't play it. But you probably won't listen to me any way, will you"
This game is so inherently strange and goofy, makes for a hilarious stream/let's play experience, always. _Especially_ for first timers. Well that and Nova Skeletons. If you know you know.
Dude, I just recently rebeat this game not too long ago! I had no idea Jared would EVER get around to playing it, with his other playthroughs and backlog and whatnot. I'm SOOOOO hyped to see him experience this for the first time! Now, all that is left is for him to play Alundra on PS1 and all will be well with the world. Ahhh, a guy can dream...
The massive map, the silly librarian, the drown pikemen, the frog's pizza, the clock room's exits, falling off the elevator, finding the fairie, living the nightmare, the fairie pointing out a wall, the unexpected ending . . . your reaction was priceless XD
Man is it hard to get perfectly legal, legit tech handed down to us from back when our grandparents were around, to work with modern computers. Well done, Jerd! That's my hip and handsome 20something year old streamer panther.
Good thing for the VOD channel, I stopped the stream at 2 hours in cause I had to do other things with the intention of finishing it later (I hate how Twitch has no pause or rewind feature) and it mysteriously vanished.
Fun fact: the "salt" subweapon is Vibhuti, localized as "bibuti". It's sacred ash in Hinduism. "What do you here?" is also grammatically correct. It's effectively the same as the modern English "What are you doing here?"
Yup. Although, funny to see the chat arguing with each other so sure that it's "Salt" lol And leave it to Jared to take the low hanging fruit and see it as coom. In my 34 years I don't think I ever once saw it as coom........
@@xMaGuSx888 I was the dork who read the manual all the time as a kid so I knew it was ashes but didn't know wtf it really was supposed to be for years.
@@Chamomileable Right there with you, bud. I'm still bummed games no longer come with manuals lol Used to love reading them in the car on the way home from the store as a kid.
@4:12:28 - The common-sense solution would have been to check the other vertical room to see if there was another gear switch that you missed, seeing as three of them had already clicked. I haven't watched the rest of the video yet, but judging by my cursory examination of scenes from the next two hours, I assume that Jared essentially abandoned this puzzle for the time being and won't return to it until a later upload. Will the Clock Tower become this run's Shadow Temple? Tune in next stream to find out!
One of the most fun things of seeing someone play this game without significant previous experience is that they don't yet know that there isn't a proper single mode of progression That Doppleganger boss was like my 4th or 5th that I faced in my playthrough awhile back on the Xbox version
I've been waiting for this ever since Jerd first dropped hints that he wanted to do a Symphony of the Night playthrough. Partly because I've never played it, but have been too lazy to play it myself.
That mist sound effect is as close to "Alucard pulls out his magic map" as we're gonna get. Also hah, pizza frogs, they're the Punk Frogs, friends of the TMNT
6:21:45 You didn't die a single time if I recall, you actually are good at games. Despite poking fun at yourself. Congrats on your first time through the first half. I think you'll love the second half.
The fact that you were legit smiling and laughing more in this video than most other ones shows how great a game this is. Like, they defined future games of the franchise and haven't really done much beyond this.
Who Remembers putting this game in their CD Player, and getting "This is a playstation black disc!" and then an alternate banger of the castle intro song!? Edit again: finally finished the whole VOD Jared, if you see this: I had a Gamepro magazine that had an article going over the history of the Castlevanie series up to SOTN for the games review and release. I finally got a PS1 in Christmas of '99 and absolutely bought this as one of my first games. I played it SO much... but I always felt like there was more game beyond the Richter fight. Especially since some of the screenshots had shown Alucard with way more HP, and even some of the bosses in the "next section of the game." I was so stuck on how to get there... but watching you stream yesterday, I KNOW I'm not spoiling anything anymore... I SUDDENLY realized the armor I had gotten that I read as "Spike BEARER" was actually a "Spike BREAKER" armor. I got my silver ring... found out how to get passed Richter... AND MY MIND WAS BLOWN. A whole new castle, secretly hidden passed what I THOUGHT was the ending of the game... I'll never forget that surprise and it's why this is one of my favorite games, even if I know it's overhyped and cliche now... it was something completely NEW back then. I hope you got a lot of enjoyment out of this, cus I had a hell of a time watching, and I think I'm gonna go replay this now!
I know it just started but I am kinda shocked that after Jerd found a secret at the start of the game he hasn’t been attacking walls and floors just on the off chance of “wall chicken” or secrets
So, my first two thoughts are this: "Hey, why isn't Jared using his insanely overpowered Item Crash power to murder Dracula", quickly followed by "Oh, if you don't use Item Crash you can actually die here? I've literally never seen that happen in the 20 years I've been a fan of this game".
Watching jerd fumble the spells for so long knowing how lenient the inputs are for it, hes just pushing square way to early. or not doing an entire half circle. Can only wait until he figures out soulsteal or the 4 summon spirit with a hold Mid motion :p
I've not seen much of this game but I have some familiarity with the start of it at least, and it is only on this playthrough that I've thought to ask why Dracula has so many crosses as decoration in his castle. Aren't vampires supposed to hate those?
Dracula used to be a devout christian, having been a church knight prior to his unlife. There are numerous implications that his momentary peace, falling in love with Lisa, Alucard's mother, temporarily made him pious again. Until, well, the tragedy happened and the man doubled down on his dark lordship.
@@KaedeLanyo That's actually quite tragic. It also makes me realize that I have never read the actual story of Dracula and know practically nothing about it beyond how it gets referenced in pop culture.
Isn’t the Sega Saturn version considered better due to a castle with more areas and a button just for item usage? Edit: What is your style of music, Projared?
Watched until the 40 minute mark and you solved an back tracking issue for me (I got lost with forward progress). Yeah by the time you read this, this little tidbit of info won't really mean much but the game is very unique for its start. You beginning stats will depend on how well you do in the first intro fight. So what happens if you don't get hit at all? You'd have to be very lucky to find out.
I would say the Xbox 360 & PS3 exclusive to SotN is the best way to play the game. Mainly for cutting down load times, can play as Ricther & Maria ( PS3 version only ), an whole lot of save files, an more powerful fps or resolution & other contents.
Ive never seen someone buy spells in this game before. Everyone ive ever encountered before did what I did. Button mash like its a Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat game until spells happen. Didnt even know spell scrolls existed.

I saw some people in the chat talking about Harmony of Despair, figured I would mention the game isn't dead. The PS3 version is active and you can still find people to play with.
