  • What's up fellow foil frothers!
    Yesterday I got the new Armstrong XPS 4.6m wing in the mail. I haven't seen any real-world reviews from amateur riders, so I figured I'd try my hand at a live review of my new XPS wing!
    GoPro selfie stick in one hand, XPS wing in the other, I attempt to say coherent logical things about what I was feeling as a tacked upwind and attempted to do some flag out Downwinders.
    Coming from the Armstrong V2 this wing is leaps and bounds ahead in all aspects. My wing foiling is almost entirely focused on downwinding. I simply wing to get better at pumping and reading bumps. I tack upwind and flag out downwind back. This review is from my prospective as a downwind junkie.
    I want a light weight wing that flags out well, good stable drift, with solid handles, and good upwind ability. And I have to say I am super impressed with the new XPS wing.
    Please feel free to ask me any questions you have. I paid full price for this wing and I do not have any affiliations with any brands. I am a free agent, or as I like to proudly say, I'm sponsored by myself!!!! 😂👍
    Equipment:
    7'6" Barracuda board
    Armstrong 4.6m XPS wing
    Armstrong foil 795/1750/60/220 no shim
    Keep flying my friends! 😎🤙

    Great review and camera work. I’ve ridden with the go pole and it ain’t easy!! The new wing looks great. I’m fighting the temptation to get that very size.

      😂👍 Thank you my friend! Yes, holding the selfie stick made it a lot harder that's for sure! It's a great wing. I'm impressed. 4.6m XPS in 10 kts of wind was no problem on my downwind setup.

    Hi.. i added you as friend on FB.. i am curious now that you are using 1180 do you have any need for the 1750 at all? would love to chat with you to compare the two, and my purpose would be light wind winging.. also interested in hearing more about the xps wings as well.

      The breach recovery is amazing with the MA foils. Unlike any other foil I’ve every ridden. The MA1750 is faster than the APF1675 by a lot. But it’s also a lot harder to flat water paddle up. But, if you are winging the MA1750 works in practically no wind. The APF1675 is a special foil because of it’s super low stall speed. So super light wind winging, or dock starting, or flat water paddle ups, or learning to downwind. I should ride the MA1750 back to back with the HA1180 and do a review of the two. The HA1180 is very efficient. I have to say the 1180 pumps easier than the 1750. Not sure on their stall speeds. I’ll have to get back to you. Follow me and Look for future videos. 😎🤙

    great video! I'm leaning to grabbing a 5.3 first everything you've said sounds great. I'm curious are you using gopro 360 or insta 360?

      Hey man. Thx! It’s a GoPro 360. And I just lost it winging yesterday. 😭 Gonna go look for it when the wind dies down. But, I like the GoPro. I’ll replace it with another one. Having the unlimited cloud upload storage is super nice. 😎🤙

    Hi! Looking for some perspective. Maybe you can help me. I bought the 5.3 and am having trouble with getting up and going on a 50L sinker. I’d been getting up on that same sinker with a 2021 5m duotone echo which is what I learned a couple months back. Once I’m able to get on foil I absolutely love the 5.3, but its proven super hard to pump it to get on foil. It seems to act kind of erratically kind of like what happens in your video around the 20 minute mark. I’ve heard people talk about adjusting to a tighter canopy but I’m unsure what to do to adjust. I thought maybe hand placement but that didn’t work for me. The short of it is I stand on my sinker and start pumping the wing to get on foil it just pumps very erratically and out of control for me. Any tips would rock 🫶🏼🙌🏼🤘🏼

      Hi! Interesting. You are probably stalling the wing. These tight canopies and higher aspect ratios are more sensitive to this. Try letting your back hand out until the wing is unloaded, then just pull in with your back hand a little bit. If you keep pulling in with the back hand more and more you will feel the pull of the wing drop off, this means you have stalled the wing. When stalled it will feel uncontrollable and provide much less pull. Play with this. When you get the pitch correct for maximum pull (back hand pulled in just a little) then I suggest a circular wing pumping motion. Push the wing upwind and away from you as far as you arms can reach, then pull the wing backwards being careful not to pull in too much with your back hand, pull the wing backwards and towards you, when all the way pulled in push the wing forward and away from you. This makes a backwards circle motion. Do it quickly. Lmk how this works for you. 😎🤙 It's like scooping air from in front of you to behind you. Like you are using the wing as a paddle to paddle the air while being careful not to stall the wing, it's an airfoil after all. Gotta maintain laminar flow. 😎🤙

      @@flightjunkie808 thanks for getting back to me chief! Yeah, i think it’s just gotta to be a very fine line between oversheeted/stalled and max power. Gonna try this out next time and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!
      P. S. just ran into your instagram by chance and saw you running an Axis wing on an Armstrong mast. Commented on it as well.

      @@giovannidelarosa2865 That’s great! Changing gear alway requires a learning period. I have found as I get better, experimenting with different gear frequently speeds up the learning process, and the changes start to get easier! Enjoy the XPS wing. I’m really liking it myself. 😎🤙

    Sweet review. I’ve had 2 sessions on the 4.6 and very impressed. How is the 220 paired with the 1750?

    • @flightjunkie808
      @flightjunkie808  Год назад +1

      Thank you! The 220 feels good with the 1750. I'm working on my pump efficiency. One I get a bit more dialed in I plan to downsize the tail for less drag and a bit more speed out of the 1750. Right now I'm maxing out around 18mph.

    How is the wingspan and chord of the 4.6xps compared to your 4.5m v2? Wider wingspan? Deeper cord? Or about the same?
    I had a 4.5m V2 but thinking to go a size larger for a little lower wind range. Thanks!

    • @flightjunkie808
      @flightjunkie808  Год назад

      I haven't laid them next to each other to see. The wing pumping technique is different, but once you master that the 4.6 has just as much low end as the 4.5. Wing size is personal preference. I prefer small wing and big foil rather than the other way around. Because my focus is on downwinding and pumping. I can do 6-8 mph winds with the 4.6m. 😂👍

    • @ginodavid9661
      @ginodavid9661 Год назад

      @@flightjunkie808 amazing you can get going in 6-8mph. Agree with the smaller sizes and larger foil.
      For my height 5’8 the 4.5m was great. Anything bigger like the 5.5m A Wing felt too large and wide.

      @@ginodavid9661 Yea! It's pretty amazing what is possible with the new equipment that's coming out! Have you seen the downwind guys in Maui pump up on to foil from a stop with no wing, no paddle, nothing!?! Crazy. A 7' or 8' downwind board and a 1500 to 2000 cm foil and you can get up with practically no wind and a medium size wing! 😎🤙
