The 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals is a 10-player round-robin taking place from September 25 to October 4 on chess24, with World Champion Magnus Carlsen, World Cup winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Dutch no. 1 Anish Giri playing from a venue in Oslo. The players start with bonus points based on their performance over the $1.6 million tour so far and then play a match each day for a maximum of 3 points. The top scorer after 9 rounds wins $100,000 and is crowned the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour champion.
Each match features four rapid games with a time control of 15 minutes for all moves plus a 10-second increment added each move. The winner gets 3 points and the loser 0. If tied 2:2, then a blitz playoff is played, with two games where the players have 5 minutes and a 3-second increment. If still tied they play a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. The winner after a playoff gets 2 points, the loser 1. One of the best games I've seen lately. Really astounding how Carlsen pushes chess and himself.
I am a noob but I am starting to think that generally trading multiple pieces for 1 of an equal value is not really that equal. IE, trading 2 minor pieces for a rook and pawn usually goes bad for whoever is loosing the two minor pieces. Obviously very dependent on the particular position but in general seems to be the case.
@@mauriciorossi8477 You aren't wrong. It's rarely good to give up 2 minor pieces for a Rook, even Rook and pawn most times.
That square defense is like a tank, slowly advancing to victory. Way to go Magnus :)
@@mauriciorossi8477 Generally, yes, but as antonio said in the video, the pieces have to be developed and need to be useful for them to equal the queen. So while trading a queen for 3 pieces looks good on paper, if you dont know what youre doing youll lose a game like that😅
True. The hardest pieces to develop under pressure seems to be the bishops getting stuck behind the king for example.
I think Magnus was showing off his ability to coordinate his pieces against a queen. Beautiful stuff.
agree .. he always seems to be experimenting, accepting odd positions and working his way out... can't see Nepo getting anywhere near beating him wheh it comes to the crunch
It's incredible how Magnus maneuvered the game to an open position. Unbalanced and completely opened this is a beauty to watch, magnificent chess playing.

While the other super gms are playing out boring draws,or playing solid lines, magnus is sacrificing his queen on move 8. Watching that game live was incredible. He is a god amongst men. Love magnus but he was making boring draws in all 4 rapids
@@jgone4856 even super computers makes boring draws.
@@jgone4856 he was playing anish. I dont think he was the one strictly making draws. Contrary to that, again,is the fact that he sacrificed his queen in blitz. He made that up on the spot and capitalized on every small inaccuracy and mistake anish made. It shows the difference in levels of magnus and other players, both in terms of strength and entertainment value. Magnus with a queen sacrifise! cant imagine anything better for my evening!😄
Am at a work-conference in Greece, with my company, and I was watching this on my phone while everyone was drinking beer and having fun (chatting and dancing); I was having fun drinking beer and streaming (thanks EU roaming 😁). When the queen sack popped up, I literally dropped my jaw and people were staring at me, like: dude, WTF?!
Well, Greece is Greece, work is work, but chess is CHESS!
You didn't listen to Antonio, you have to share this with your friends at the bar and library!
I love when Magnus decides to "play some real chess". Quit the book, enter some crazy unbalanced position and explain to his opponent why he didn't become World Champion by an accident.
I’ve watched the forming of Magnus’ impenetrable fortress around his king at the end about 10 times in a row now, and still my mind is blown every time. The game is a masterpiece on his end. Magnus Carlsen is completely transcending the game of chess as we know it.
If Magnus sacrifices his queen you are in great trouble... basically he is saying "I'm so sure I'll win you'd better resign"
If Magnus offers you his queen there's very little you can do.
it was that or lose the knight back with tempo. I'm not giving up one tempo, i'm the god damn world champion. less of a queen sacrifice and more of a defensively forced variation with equal material.
I swear the phrase “they’re playing checkers, when you’re playing chess” applies to magnus playing against the best chess players in the world… he’s literally on a different level even against the best in the world.
This has to be one of the sickest games I have ever seen! I very well might become Carlsen's immortal due to insane queen sacrifice and sheer imbalance in the game.
Amazing! This looks like something kids would make as a puzzle, "because it looks cool". Thumbnail should have been the position at 7:29. What an insane position. There should be a book that includes this game with a chapter titled, "So you want to build a fortress..."
@Agadmator's Chess Channel SCAM ALERT
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from watching Magnus play, it’s you never trade down with that guy. You gotta keep it complicated.
Not at all. He can really play complicated chess better
I'm not sure it gets more complicated! This is Magnus showing off.
35 moves of perfect piece coordinatation. This man is truly stockfish!
Magnus started this year weak but these past few tournaments he’s been unchallenged
My god - not hanging anything in such an endgame ... couldnt be me 🧍♂️
A queen for 3 minor pieces, ok, good deal. But playing that in a tournament blitz game against players that are part of the world elite, you need some impressive confidence and a good cpu! Dayum, Magnus! Hats off!
sacks his queen on move 8, still forces a resignation. man is world champion for a reason
What a beautiful game! Magnus wins by resurrecting his sacrificed queen.
A great sacrifice and a great redemption! It starts and ends with the queen.
What makes this even more interesting for me is the sinister smile on Magnus' face. I keep looking at it. Lol
Reminds me of that Tobey Maguire face meme.
This is beyond spectacular from Magnus Carlsen, genius Queen sacrifice
Just elegance. Beautiful coordination between the minor pieces even with the cramped position twice he gave away pawns knowing he could gang up on those advanced and exposed pawns with active pieces.
This is why I would take 3 pieces. I know it's not a popular opinion but this game is my favorite blitz game.
This is why Magnus is the greatest chess player of all times. Truly the GOAT
Magnus' fortress was a thing of beauty in this game. Absolutely incredible.
This just in.
Magnus agrees he is the goat.
Best queen sacrifice EVER. It allowed so much counter play. This may elevate the game going forward. Such aggression and creativeness. Sooo beautiful.
I'm amazed that in blitz format Magnus could think quickly enough to calculate that he'd win a third piece. Clearly he did and Giri didn't.
Giri undoubtedly noticed it, but thought that his lead in development meant the position was good for him. Carlsen genius was to recognise that, as long as all the minor pieces were defending each other, it didn't matter how passive they were, white could never make any progress, while black could keep improving his pieces until he had a winnable endgame.
No one simply becomes a World Champion! The piece coordination in that massive wall around the king was excellent, every piece was guarding every other piece.
😆 that is the idea! You must guard all your pieces 😉
Magnus: Two horsies, two rooks, and two road runners...
Giri: The Two Lonely Towers, one lone horsie, a neglected wi.. queen, and a king who is never gonna do much!
Me: Sorry, Giri, but those are terrible odds... Best to bet on black..
Great game! The beauty of having a complete set, except the queen, is that 2 knights, 2 bishops and 2 rooks can all work together to cause some major damage. The bishops can block the king on the dark and light squares, and 2 knights working in tandem are monsters.
Felt like magnus for a while 😎... I used to sacrifice my queen so early in many of my games.
Why have You stopped? I still currently do queen sacrifices that are so good no one can understand them 😎😎
Saw this live, wandering how fast would upload
One of the greatest sacs of all time at this level, same as Fisher vs Byrne.
Byrne was a weak player and Anish is much stronger
Like all the other comments, this has got to be one of Magnus's most brilliant games. Anish is no slouch in GM tactical play and what a shock and sudden "WTF" moment he must have had when Carlsen went with NxB?! He must have known in his heart of hearts that the proverbial rat-trap door had just closed behind him...wow! Astonishing play is never lost on Magnus; to our delight. Bravo Magnus, BRAVO!
Moving that black fortress down the board was a thing of beauty.
Magnus seems to have solved chess now!!!
This was an absolutely beautiful masterpiece by Magnus.
I'm glad Anish allowed Magnus to Queen. Shows he's always a good sport and a gentleman
The frame at 05:58 is just magnificent. One for the decade, definitely. It not only shows Magnus’ brilliant defensive skills but also symbolises the power of team work over any individual.
Another remarkable game from Magnus, and another one where one of pieces didnt move a muscle during entire game (g7 pawn in this case). Llike the immortal fortress against Hikaru Nakamura where c7 pawn never moved an inch.
Chess fans: Magnus is a boring player. Solid playing is his first priority.
Magnus: OK! Let's start the show. This game is dedicated to these noobs.
Guess they haven't seen Giri, who strives for draws.
The game of magnus depends on the opponent, if his fellow chess player is strong he will play solid, if he plays with the lower, he can freestyle as he pleases without the basic principles of chess
@@andrethekid1176 he freestyles with GMs too... he's THAT good
because magnus is the king of the king of gms
This game was something else watching it live. Incredible foresight by Magnus especially playing the black pieces. I was even more impressed when he gave the interview and pointed out possible ways Giri could have won but that’s blitz for you. He saw it all. Also when Magnus walked away after this victory and Giri stayed sitting at his computer just comprehending what had just happened for a minute. Giri looked beyond defeated there.
It's crazy how well Magnus has been playing recently, I can't remember the last game he made an inaccuracy. I don't follow all his games but he seems to be crushing in tournaments right now.
Agadmator putting up a Gandhi quote on Gandhi's birthday!
I remember the unassailable reference. I think you read it in a book and you liked the word and you kept repeating it. Am I an excellent subscriber???
Good job! This was an amazing game to watch. Thank you for the content.

Craziest game of the century..
Not really
Truly masterpiece....Dr Drunkenstein goes on a killing spree
One of my favourite and 1st game seen in a while as been so busy ty!
Also, it's interesting that Magnus' King knight and Queen knight criss-crossed the board: Queen knight on the king rook file and the king knight on the queen knight file. It's fun being a Magnus fan!
I really liked that Agad used Mahatma Gandhi's quote on his birthday 🙂
I think Magnus has done more than enough to prove that he is world champion.
3:39 This alone earned the like. Also, that "structure" was regarded as an "airplane" by Reydama, and the passed pawn, as a "missile"; quite epic, these positions are kind of bizar.
I love your channel, it always brightens my day! Thank you.
Man magnus is really ready for the world championship
Its hard to believe this is a blitz game. Truly deserving the title of the world champion and that doesnt look like it will change anytime soon!

Why do I have a feeling that magnus had it prepared years ago and never got to play it.
Giri: captures the queeen
Magnus: I'm not strong, but we out numbered you
Simply stunning victory... chess, and Magnus, continues to amaze.
He was Tal in the opening, Fischer in the middle and simply himself in the endgame. Scary for any opponent! Truly GOAT
If he plays like in this tournament against Nepo he will win every single game.
No he won't. Its extremely hard to beat Nepo in classical
Do you know what classical is? Its the world chess chamoionship. If nepo offers a draw hell take it,he wont risk anything
@Od1sseas I have been watching Magnus games since he played Garry Kasparov back to 2003 in 2 rapid games, we know how strong Magnus , he is the favorite to beat Nepo but i doubt he will crush him, bear in mind it is classical chess, besides Magnus only beat Vishy twice in the classical stage, the rest of his matches was decided in the blitz stage
There may be a couple games where he crushes Nepo, but if Nepo is on form too it will be a heck of a match.
@Od1sseas Yes for Magnus. he never beat him in classical. Nepo beat him twice i think or maybe three times
I feel like magnus lost some games over the last 6 months and he really stepped up since fall!
Definitely. He was losing in the final match of tournaments frequently, didn't get it done in the Chess960 finals, lost again in the World Cup, etc. Crazy form right now though
Absolutely outstanding!
The best chess commentator and analyst there is! Thanks for the great work!

Engines are stronger and less pricier no?
@@bc_7644 agreed, but to draw the best out of them require skills, and quite some work to do. With his lightening quick videos he can't do that justice. Moreover there are GMs who would love to work with him for free. This will maintain his zero production cost.
