- News Tower is a resource management game set in 1930's New York where we attempt to build ourselves a mighty newspaper empire! Print is King! Of we do all of this from a tower, which starts off small but soon begins to grow.
We begin with the basics, so ordering things in like paper and food, and then we get in some reporters to go and do some, y'know, reporting. Soon enough we have extra staff on board to do typesetting and proof reading and all that newspapery stuff, and before too long our very first newspaper hits the presses!
Then things begin to ramp up as we add photographs and adverts to our paper, all of which requires a few extra floors to be build onto the top of our tower. There's basic facilities to build, like toilets and seating areas, plus we have decorative items to buy like paper bins, hat stands and of course the all important coffee machines!
We do struggle to find stories that our reporters are skilled enough to deal with. Fortunately we spot what the issue is but is it too late?
NOTE: This is the demo version of the game.

Penge two people who are really incompetent in investigating crimes does not equal a reporter who is a criminal mastermind
I dream of a better world where just adding up numerical representations of people's skills results in spectacular results.
I always find something interesting and somewhat obscure on this channel, I'm so glad I found it recently
I really like the gameplay mechanics here and definitely want to see this game in a playable form soon.
Yeah, I can see this being really good with a lot of stories to report on and rival papers and suchlike.
Why you faced issues was down to a few things:
1. each type of desk really requires it own room that also requires their own comfort items and upgrades. The eye icon beside the money is an overlay that shows each employee comfort level.
2. Machines create heat and noise so need to have their own rooms with fans to reduce heat.
3. Bathroom also stink so need fans and own rooms. You added a new bathroom but didn't create a new room.
4. Journalists usually share a desk but all require a place to work so if you have four Journalists then you need either four desks or a long desk with four work areas. This is done by placing the Journalists desk then click the + button and draging out a longer Journalists desk. In this room you can place objects that boost the skill of each Journalists by selecting decor like a crimeboard (boost crime reporting) or sports board etc… some object boost all the skills of all employees like the clock so place the clock in every room is must!
I hope you revisit this game and try to correct some of the things that you missed.
The game needs to point these things out, though. I thought perhaps that the choosing by stats of reporters to stories was a little obvious, although Penge didn't see it, but these things you're pointing out are not. We did find out that noise was an issue, but only accidentally, because he clicked on a person and found that in that person's stats. And the heat was shown in brief red flashes, but no information about it at all. Bathrooms stink...well there was nothing suggesting that at all (great original idea, though!!), and that (and noise etc) could have been addressed by a well worded explanation about creating rooms in the tutorial. No instructions for desk resizing at all. The only clue about using items on desks and in rooms was the placement of the typewriter. It doesn't have to explain every detailed mechanism, but some *general* information is pretty essential: A helpful universal type explanation that placing stuff on desks and in rooms appropriately helped with stats would be useful and that environment was important is really necessary, even if the developer wants this to be a kind a discovery thing. The game needs to at least explain that the personal stats of the workers are important and useful clues for improving their work (in many games this is not quite so directly the case - I really liked that the personal stats were important and directly influenced the work of the staff - more realistic than most games), so that the player is at least able to find these things without it being totally experimental in a kind of "I wonder if this does anything...?" way.
He missed stuff, but that was mostly because the game missed explaining it. Of course, the game is not finished, obviously. And it looks quite interesting and potentially good if these things are ironed out! I really liked the detail and thought that went into this game - that the stink of toilets, lighting, desk items etc, really matter - all that stuff is actually really great and quite unique. Hopefully the developer might take these things on board and make the game a little more accessible. :-)

Because of your video we have found and fixed a bug where the introducer was still there after skipping the introduction (intro skipping is possible after starting a new game more than once). It's really cool to see all these people discovering News Tower and the way they approach the game and we hope many more will!

52:00 there are things that can be changed in size like... the reporting table and the cantina table. When you click on them you see arrows to the left and right. Using them you extend the table in that direction, adding extra seats. ^^
Yeah, a few people have pointed that out. I was entirely unaware of this! I think future versions of the game will make this sort of stuff a bit clearer, there were quite a lot of things we missed out on due to some slightly unhelpful interfaces.

Like all your playthroughs this was a lot of fun to watch but the game obviously needs a tutorial and the UI needs improving. I agree that combining journalists to make a 'team' should work at first glance. Otherwise this seems very counter-intuitive and although it's possible to buff employees, the process isn't clear. Hopefully the finished game will be a bit better. I have noticed on the Steam discussion board that you can buff your reporter's skills by adding telephones and clocks to their desks plus their comfort level will negatively impact their skills so I'd recommend that people check that out or you'll end up like poor Penge having to discover this sort of stuff after an hour of playtime.

I really liked this game, especially the way you played it. I hope you'll try again when the game is released :-). Maybe the newspaper ended because of the depression, lol.
NulGames has a dev playthrough of the demo showing things that are not very intuitive nor spelled out in the tutorial (like maintenance, etc.). But they said their discord is a great way to provide them feedback and bugs. Can't wait to see how this develops and more Cuppa News!

Are you sure you can't seat more people on the same table? The reporter table has an arrow that the others stations do not. Maybe that is how you combine their stats?

This game looks like it will be fun if the devs pay attention to what's missing and get it fixed... like a proper tutorial so you know what to do. I wonder if you could have added reporters to the same table if you'd used those arrows on the "add someone" popup thing.
I was a reporter for a small town newspaper. They didn't print their paper though... that was done in the city. I did help them win some awards... for writing as well as for photography. But they worked me so hard I was completely burned out after a couple of years and wasn't able to work for a full year. It was a good run though and I learned a lot, met a lot of people, and even had some good fun sometimes.

Interesting, atmospheric and charming, but also extremely quirky and illogical at times. What happened, for example, to the janitors you hired early on? Did they just vanish, or? All the things breaking down reminded me of the prison builder, where certain desks etc. just kept falling into disrepair.
Quite remarkable, that the world ran out of news to report on and - especially considering the age - there was suddenly not a single unemployed person around to hire.
I thouroughly enjoyed the video.
It was a bit odd that we ran out of news but that's what happens when we play demo versions! Sometimes things don't always go according to plan!

I went on my honeymoon, it was wonderful, if a tad hectic. I had the finest steak I've ever had in New York. Happy memories!

We've had a go at it and it was very enjoyable, but we'll be back with News Tower when it's a bit more developed. We've not seen the last of it on the channel!
