- There's been a bit of disagreement over face masks should be sold, donated, or a combination of the two. I decided to weigh on on the issue today. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Thank you! I do a combination of both. I sell and donate. I only charge $5 each so I am making almost nothing but it does pay for my costs!
That's great that you are doing what works for you!
I am so glad that you put this enlightenment video together. Your Walmart comment was the exact conversation a fellow maker had on Facebook. She wasn't making masks but had screenshot someone's post and created a thread that was chastising this person and what she was charging. She used linen for a lining and this other person was too quick to judge without reading the details. What if that mom was trying to feed her family, keep a roof over their head and clothes on her kids? What if she's one of the ones who lost her job? I don't work and my husband was furloughed my income now became zero. I have just started to make masks because people are asking me to, and as for donations that's fine I agree with that, someone reached out to me for Veterinary donations, but when people are getting donated their materials they're not such Champions are they? Joann has kits that you can sew up, donate your time, and return finished masks to them for distribution.... that's wonderful they can do that! Others are trying to stay above water... Anyway thank you so very much, your mask looks so high end! Luv You, stay safe!👏👏👏💯💕
Thanks for your comment! The social media shaming is just insane!
I can’t sew to save my life! I brought all my masks of Etsy, I would much rather support independent sellers than big shops
Thank you so much!
I make and sell masks. Im also out of work so the masks have kept food on my families table for the last month and a half
I'm so glad you've been able to do that!
Nikki, your so correct.....I started making masks the last week of Feb.....my daughter is in medicine and we have had 4 exchange students from Japan and each one of them brought their masks, this was a few yrs before covid19, so masks and the benefits were able known to me.........I admit, all I wanted to do was make masks for my community from 4-5 am til 12 mid ..7 days a week for 6 weeks 1300 masks were made and given free or a $ here or there donation, I used every SINGLE Yard of cotton (I am a quilter) over 400 yard of high quality fabric I paid $10 to $13 a yard.........I retired and that was my quilting stash............as the year went by I people had options to by so I was able to cut back in hours, but every day in 2020 I made masks. Now 2021 I am making masks as a business......I will be charging a certain amount which is is not "designer" wages, although I consider after 2100 different styles of masks I am awesome and love customizing for the hard to fit, which I do NOT charge extra. I can only hope that my clients from 2020 will consider local and buy from me or someone who has been supplying their masks, rather than go online or into big chains that Now have their China made masks for a few $......................it will be interesting.........
Wow, that is incredibly generous of you!
Here’s my opinion. (Because you asked lol 😆)
The nurses, office workers, cashiers, etc...that need masks because they are out in the world providing essential services, HAVE PAYCHECKS!! They aren’t the people who are broke at home with no job!!! If anyone needs our help, it’s the people who can no longer pay their bills because they have to stay home.
So, FOR GODS SAKE, buy a friggin mask from them! They are your neighbors. They are YOUR community! If you really want to “help”, then support their decision to put their talent to work and put food on their table. Buy local!
I’m sick of people patting themselves so hard on their own backs because *they* don’t charge for masks. Well, Whoopi-do-dah for them. So happy to hear they and their children have plenty to eat, and plenty of money. Just peachy they can sit in their comfy homes and lord this over everyone out there who are actually struggling. They make me want to puke. They are NOT helping.
I briefly went into a FB group about masks
to find out if there were any places where I could donate a few masks. I have made some for my family, and have not tried selling. I was SHOCKED and disgusted at all the “holier-than-thou” people in that group who mercilessly shamed people who sell masks. They really all should be ashamed of themselves.
I agree completely! A lot of the people making these comments are showing how narrow their worldview is. I'm glad they're able to meet all their needs, but many people aren't, and we should support those trying to make an honest living.
Yes!!! Thank you!!
Thank you for telling it like it is!!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks for much!
Thank you for telling it as it is. I can definitely see both sides to it. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing and posting your opinion/argument. I understand both sides. I have already sewn several face masks and have not charge anyone...donating is wonderful.
However, doing these as a business is not bad at all. Hope I can learn more tips from you, Nikki. Stay safe and God bless.
Thank you for donating masks!
thank you for uploading this im just starting a mask shop for my neighbours tysm
Thank you for helping!
I love hearing your opinions
Thanks! Everyone has them LOL!
Thank you for being real people don’t understand the time and money we put in to do this craft😍😍
I can't be anything but real LOL! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Nikki I agree with you on the comment both ways. I sell to those who ask me to make them for them, and I donate to Frontline, haven't made a profit yet LOL but thank you for your public comments, and everyone else as well. Stay safe and healthy!
Thank you! Do what works for you!
I think that looks like a nice designer mask that can be sold for a fair price. Sell them!
Maybe sell one at a slightly higher price to cover cost of both with profit and donate one
to your local hospital or police dept.?
I've seen people do that! Good idea!
Everything in moderation is good and I think your way of selling most of the masks and donating some would do the job in today's situation 👍
That's worked for me!
In the UK and you sell them I think that you need to meet specific standards and if you could be considered liable if a person catches covid-19 because of inadequate protection, so selling could be a bit of a minefield.
Great point!
i agree i make them and yes i do sell them cause i dont get donations and i dont have the money to buy supply and now you cant even find fabric i have to travel to the only fabric store in nj and they only sells for ppl who do mask and his prices are high some are like 10 dollars a yard the money i get it goes right back to get more supplies to make more but i did donate some..
$10 a yard is reasonable for quality quilting cotton fabric. There are a lot of online shops as well. That's where I get mine.
You're right and also we have to buy masks and face covers from stores as well..I like your take on it and also agree that it is good to donate to frontline workers.
Thank you!
I say if WALMART can sell them then we can also...why should they be the only ones making a sell. Thank you for your video!
We are not selling our masks..donate to those who need..ask for donations if they are able to. We have made and distributed 750 in over a week. We can not keep up with the need. It is getting the supplies needed that is the hard part.
Thanks for donating them! That's very kind.
Im thinking of selling masks at my school, do you think thats a good idea?
Sure, if your school allows it!
@@NikkiVelazquez ok
I made hundreds of masks and donated all of them to Nursing homes and hospitals near me. I just didn't feel comfortable selling them. I thinks it's great to make them and sell them if you are comfortable with it. The only time I have a problem with it is when people buy all the toilet paper and hand sanitizer then turn to sell it for 5x the price.
That was the worst! We almost ran out of toilet paper!
My friends and I started a little mask business so we could try to help the situation and make some extra money. I think people really underestimate the time and effort it takes to sew because all the clothing now adays is made by people who are not even paid 1/10 of what they should be.
Exactly!! Fast fashion and sweatshop labor have warped the public's sense of what clothes cost.
@@NikkiVelazquez people have been used to paying so little for clothes they think it's outrageous when someone charges a liveable wage
I donated 500 mask too the hospitals but sold most
Thank you!
Here is something that I would like to bring up, I paid 50.00 for 2 crafts shows. Hey are cancelled. I'm out 100.00. Nobody is offering a refund. Yes they put the craft shows for a cause. But I wish I had the 100.00 right now. I'm kinda short on cash. I dont think its fair. There are a lot of people profiting from masks. If someone asked me to donate the money for the masks or even the shows, sure maybe I would say yes. It's not right to even have a choice.
I'm sorry that happened. That happened to friends of mine as well.
Read Matthew 6:1-4
When u give you should do it secretly, not blast it on social media and brag about it, that is your reward!
I too am skeptical about the motives of those who brag about good deeds.
I agree with everything u said in ur video, that was for the people that feel the need to blow the trumpet for the good deeds they do, and pass judgment on others who are unable to do the same. The Bible addresses the subject on so many levels, just thought I'd share one passage that pretty much sums it up! And yes, it does make u wonder about their motives...
i am making them until no one else needs one. i will not charge anyone. Those who have offered to pay, I said if you want then donate to a charity that is helping with this crisis. Anyone who charges a frontline person who is risking their lives for us, needs to take a good long hard look in the mirror!!
That's great for those in a position to do that.
