Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Diamonds With BNSF, Norfolk Southern & CSX Trains In Deshler Ohio & Facts!

  • 3 trains at the railway diamonds in Deshler Ohio led by Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Norfolk Southern and CSX locomotives. Close look at the new track at the railroad crossing on the old B&O. The old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad color position lights are still in use! I got lucky to catch a southbound mixed freight led by a Norfolk Southern locomotive crossing the diamond. Most of the trains in Deshler are led by CSX since all the track is owned by them but I caught trains led by BNSF, NS and Union Pacific. The UP train will be in another video. I am told by the local railfans that there are up to 40 trains a day on the east/west line and up to 15 on the B&O southbound line although the portion north of the diamond only gets a few a day. More trains come around the eastern connection to the southbound track than from the northern part crossing the diamond. Therefore, I was lucky to catch that one train led by NS. I will have a couple of more videos from Deshler because I didn't want this video to be too long. I filmed a train knocking down the old B&O signals that I will post and I will post a silly video of people getting hit on the head by the crossing gates. Deshler is a great place to film trains since it has tables, a shelter, port o lets and radio feeds for railfans. I spent the night nearby at Findlay, Ohio at the Quality Inn. Filmed June 11, 2021. when you see foreign power deep in another railroads territory that’s a sign that the train was handed off to the second railroad where the two interchange, they leave the power on as it greatly speeds up the run through and in this case CSX will owe BNSF for the hours their engines operated on CSX’s track, they usually just calculate how much foreign power was used on a net basis since CSX engines do run out to the west coast. It’s all done to deliver a faster transit time to better compete with their chief competitor the trucks

From the maintenance side diamonds require time and frequent tightening but when the cars fly across the sound is fantastic. In fact you take the lengths of cars or truck spacing and the clatter is like a form of Morse code. in addition to the fallen flag cars the 2nd intermodal train had an early design well car with the high ends. Happy Father's Day and put Deshler on the worthy visit list. Let the action come to you!

As I also said before, its surrounded by tracks on all sides and would cost a fortune to make it safe for the public. If a private party came along with lots of money, I'm sure it could be preserved. A big concern to CSX is the structure itself. Where it is now is a threat to the tracks. If the structure fell apart, it would most likely fall and block the tracks somewhere. The building is very fragile at this point. The south side is VERY much deteriorated which can be seen on the static camera.

Hi JT. One of the major differences between UK and US railways is that here in the UK huge numbers of passengers use the railway. Every city, especially London has a huge number of commuters who go to and from work on the train. In the US, it seems that passenger use is really low compared with freight. Therefore, in several of your recent videos we see a lot of abandoned station buildings.

136#re rail is the industry standard now , it’s cheaper to use a industry standard than a off size even if that size is smaller, on our railroad for years we used 115-119 re rail then switched to136 because the mill rolled much more of it

Interesting to see that they are installing new rails, but the condition of the sleepers/ties looks rather poor. In the UK nearly all of the wooden sleepers have been replaced with concrete. Wood is mostly found on the preserved/steam railways as part of the historic recreation. I also realised, looking at this, that the way that the rails are attached to the ties/sleepers is very different.
