This is the reason I love your vids so much. CUZ YOU TELL THE TRUTH! Like you said you could have not shown the crappy, chilly side of camping in the cold sleet/snowy weather but you did. Cuz it's the reality of living and loving the bush. Carry on, my man!
Hey folks I went with a longer format in PART 2. I included some important discussions on what to do in sticky situations outdoors. I also evaluate some of my kit choices, my diet and chat about my expedition training procedures. Hope you enjoy this little different style from me. PART 3 of the series should be up soon, I'm hoping this Sunday. --Please *LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE, and LEAVE A COMMENT to help the channel grow! and perhaps on your next trip, teach a bit about fundamental old school navigation skills (no GPS) eventhough you are actually using it) on some of the most familiar treks to you. Just for educational purposes :) Thanks buddy
Justin Barbour WHEW! IN PART 1😓BEAR HAD ME ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT WHEN THAT GALLAVANTING EXPLORER TOOK OFF FOR A WHILE THERE IN THE WOODS! LOL! 😇 I WAZ LIKE OH MY GOSH! ❤ WIFEY WILL FREAK OUT! LOL!
I'm glad you even show the things that can happen when out in the bush. That is one thing that sets you above other channels that only glorifie the good out there. Thanks
Thanks, David appreciate that comment. We're working on it, one video at a time. Very happy to have the viewers we do though. All the best & safe adventures
Being laid up after two surgeries in a month, I live through your adventures till I can get out again...TY Justin from your 60 yr old fan/Auntie from the west coast
I love your attitude towards those who leave their garbage in the woods. Keep up your good work. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Cheers from the Burin Peninsula!
Always love to see your adventures Justin! Never had a chance to do what you're doing being an Army guy. My adventures were always work but you have inspired me to start getting out into the wild after seeing you. Cheers from the USA.
Living I Africa my whole life, you bring a fantastic dimension to qhat this world has to offer. Don't you feel sorry for those who can't appreciate the rewards of hardship. Great videos !
Justin bud..... to help mitigate that chill off when you pause, i'll be trying Brynje mesh shirts. First developed by the Norwegian military and used on the first ascent of Everest way back when. The mesh allows sweat to come to the surface as liquid, then quickly change to vapor and float away from your body. Modern outdoor theory will say that wicking is better, but to me wicking is a bottle neck, it does its job too slow. I want that sweat to float away, not sit in my baselayer freezing me when I come to a stop. I let you know how it goes.
Working my way through the episodes I missed, Great content, always expect the unpredictable event, Murphy is only a set behind you.. Thanks Justin. Even on a road trip, carry the necessities of survival in your vehicle..
Hi Justin wearever u are grand falls is way more warm like wow it looks cold there buddy and Remember when u came to school and u wear my gym teacher well thank u for helping me with batmation!,
For the last 30 years I have made it a point to collect dry tinder as I walk just in case there is none when I need it, and I always have some birch bark in a zip lock bag with me. I do err on the side of caution though and always have at least one 45 minute road flare with me for emergencies.
I'm amazed that you and the pups were deep in the wilderness during that cold spell over the Easter break. You're a trooper, Justin, a real trooper. Love the videos , man.
Not sure if I mentioned before but pick up a few cheap bike inner tubes at Canadian Tire and throw one in the bottom of every pack you have. They have a lot of emergency uses and ultimately a piece of it makes an amazing fire starter when you absolutely have to get a fire going. I also carry a lightweight rain poncho that is fantastic for those dirty old wet zero conditions you were in. The poncho allows a lot of moisture to escape at the same time keeping the damp dirty stuff off you. Another great vid.
I have really been enjoying your videos. I love that you are environmentally wise, leaving no trace. I think it is also great that you are honest, being willing to admit when you have not prepared as well as you could. Your tips and advise are excellent. I have to remind myself when I go even on a solo day trip kayaking, to pack extra emergency gear, just in case. Looking forward to your summer 2021 trips!
Appreciate you keeping it “real”. Too many RUclipsrs don’t. People with zero experience need to see that there’s always challenges when going out there in less than favourable weather. Like you said you have to have “all the goods”. Once again thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the next part.
Justin your on a great adventure there with the old NL weather. it sure can test your out door skills for sure. You should do a TV series. this is real not like the fake stuff on tv now. love it take care
I get a kick out your comments telling folks they don't need to worry about the dogs, I don't read through the comments on your videos but I can only image what some folks tell you :-) You obviously love your dogs, I have no doubt you know what conditions they can handle and make sure they're taken care of. My German Shepherds love the cold and snow and I know how to tell exactly when they've had enough, when you work and play with your dogs you learn how to hear what they're telling you.Really enjoying the story so far, keep 'em coming!
Totally agree, those people's intentions are good I think but they don't understand that these are working animals and have the hearts of lions passed down through generations.🐕🦁
“If you’re going out for the nite, no big deal. But for your serious expeditions, you don’t want to be wet. Makes you appreciate the decision to “bug out” or bug in for am emergency in the winter.
Great job on these bud!! Love how you guys rough it out in that nasty weather but figure out how to keep warm. Great info!! I also dont blame you for keeping bear close when she tends to wander so far. People can say what they will but my heart would be beating waiting and worrying too. Take care!
Always good to see a notification for one of your videos, especially when I'm not feeling well thanks mate, always relaxing to watch you and the pups out in the Bush..cheers
I liked the longer format. Great footage. Bear looks like a regal queen surveying her domain when you are all relaxing together, and not sure if you noticed it but Saku had his hindquarters up in the air for so long when you were putting on your merino wool hoodie. It was hilarious.
Great stuff. Like you I always carry a bottle of oil and take some butter. It's good to get fats into dried food. I also recommend taking polenta. It's lightweight but can make a filling meal and you can put anything in it. I usually take a packet of Parmesan cheese as well for the polenta. I try to go for max flavour as most dried food is pretty bland. A few gravy pots are a good standby and can either add lots of flavour or even be good as a soup if need be.
Canadian spring makes for large load outs with all the weather possibilities. You may not have had the ideal equipment but you made the right decisions for the kit and circumstances that you had. Always good to see you guys getting out. Thanks for the work.
Just a suggestion, but since I saw you using a water purifying tablet, you really need to try out a LifeStraw :) When me and a buddy spent a week out camping in the wilderness in a simulated survival situation, we brought one each and I tell you they help! It's a nice leisure to be able to drink water straight from the lake without a second thought about boiling it or not. We were both very impressed by how much that detail makes everything else a little bit easier and more enjoyable :)
Once ya signed off RUclips for your trip, I was watching the weather radar your way and I knew you’d be up for a challenge. You definitely hit the thick of it. And yes! Sometimes the best decision is to turn back, would never fault anyone for the tough choices. Always an adventure with you and Saku. I love the lesson in the format. Ya never know when a new technique could be pulled from the “tool box”.
Epic canoe trip idea. Start at the east end of the BWCA in Minnesota, travel west through the Boundary Waters and Quetico. Then up through Voyageur National Park and west to Lake of the Woods. Turn north and head up to Nopiming Provincial Park, woodland Caribou and end at Opasquia Provincial Park. I don’t know how many kilometers that would be or how long it would take but what an amazing trip that would be.
What a good watch this was!!. excellent, well put together, good screen shots and very good voice overs. I enjoyed this. Also dogs are great. Stay safe
Whoo Hoo. I was the 500th like. Just off on my own 6 day trek. Cant say its going to be as cold as yours. But when you live in sud tropical climate. 6deg cel starts to feel cold. Great vid mate. cant wait for Pt3.
Nice seeing you managing wet cold weather and talking about keeping under layers dry, I bet it takes alot to have you give up the idea of a fire in the evening!
Excellent man! Love the real discussion of The Wet. She’s a real thing and I think seeing someone with experience talk about the realities of it is a very rare but very helpful thing for those who might not have as much experience with it (and who might get caught dealing with a sticky situation they didn’t anticipate)
Thank you for your brutally honest discussion of the decisions you made with regard to moisture management and preparation for your next day's travel. You made the right decision to spend an extra day at the camp. Get your gear dry plan for the next day's camp. Great video!!
Boy I'm behind. Watched this last night on to part 3. Thanks again for taking the time for putting these together Justin. What a difference from beginning of video to end on the weather. Did they ever do a great patch job on your raft!!!!
I'm enjoying all the videos you post. Great content. So happy I found your channel. I'd rather watch this than anything on the discovery or natgeo channels! Aparently my cousin(The Doody's) knows ya. keep the content coming and we will all keep watching.

Best past about Sak is that he always agrees when Justin says "Hey, Sak? Isn't that right 'ol Sakie boy?" He's a good boy.
