- Ever since the invention of heavy metal, there's been a huge divide between the mainstream and the underground. What does it take to cross the bridge from underground to mainstream? Why do underground bands get mad when others get mainstream success? Why do mainstream bands not help underground bands get more exposure? Why do the two groups have so much trouble making sense of each other? WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?? Ethan Lee McCarthy, frontman of Primitive Man -- one of the heaviest bands on earth -- joins the cast to talk about it.

"It's BEEN soft". FACTS
Ethan is a great guest. Primitive man rules!
Ethan was making solid points. There’s a huge amount of bands that are staying consistently heavy like Lamb of God, Hatebreed, Incendiary, etc. and that’s not even touching black and doom metal. Cannibal Corpse is probably bigger than Behemoth honestly, and they’ve been pretty consistent
LOG Last couple albums have been very Commercially.
i love how you can tell this is the kind of conversation Ethan is tired of having lmao
You can tell Ethan is 100% used to having people tell him that his music is too extreme for their sensitive little ears. Haha. Love it.
Edit: I gotta back Ethan on every single point. I've chosen my side. 😂
Don really just tried to argue Slipknot being extreme to the frontman of Primitive Man
Every time he opened his mouth I couldn't help but roll my eyes, absolute shit takes. 🥴 He really should have stayed in his lane instead of bringing up such weak bands
I'm with Ethan on his opinion on Slipknot. Nothing wrong with what they do but not for me.
Ethan is so based. This is like a repeat of every conversation I have with other metal fans.
If it sounds good, I don't like it.
If it sounds like there's something wrong, it's probably pretty decent.
Dude. Yes.
Make Analepsy Not Scare My Friends Away Again
I can totally relate to Ethan’s perspective. I was never really a fan of the classic metal bands like Priest or Iron Maiden not even slayer really, I was always attracted to the bands that pushed the negative vibe to the limits. Anything upbeat ruins it
And I honestly think don coyle is making weak arguments.
I'm pretty sure there are acoustic guitars and soft, sing-songy vocal ballads on Slipknot's 3rd album. Their first two albums where consecutively heavy as fuck, but in my opinion they dropped the ball on that 3rd album and were never able to recover their original aggression level.
couldn't agree more, they sold the fuck out on that record
I have to agree with Ethan, it's not the fact that they become big, it's the method of how a band goes from underground to majorly popular is what causes the hate, some bands bounce back from it and bring back the sound we like (Metallica, priest, sabbath) while other bands not so much.
I would even argue that when a band like Metallica "goes back to their roots", it's nowhere near as punishing as their earlier stuff. Like let's be real. Their latest stuff doesn't hold a candle to Master of Puppets. It just doesn't. So I almost resent the notion that they're "just as heavy". They're older, they still want to stay mainstream and make money. So that edge and that brutality is basically gone. It's too refined, too filtered, too mixed. No one is picking up their latest stuff and burning a hole through the proverbial CD like they are for Ride the Lightning. It's just not happening. The classics are classic for a reason!
Ethan is the man!! He is the Primitive Man.
13.15 KATY 100% agree! bring up the new bands so that they get attention!
Yes!! Thank you!!!
Extreme stadium band: Knocked Loose
I totally agree. They’re getting huge and they’ve almost gotten heavier. More polished but far more violent and heavy
Agreed. Seeing the new kids who aren't even necessarily metalheads starting mosh pits at Coachella or whatever the fuck give me hope. Seeing Knocked Loose and bands like them headlining at your Coachellas, Lollapaloozas, etc is fucking nuts to me but I bear witness to this new wave.
It’s not about how many people like it, but the artists and music itself
Why is it that people that are the most clueless or boring have the most to say? I'm talking about Elm st shirt guy
Lol, Coyle has such a different approach on 'metal' than Ethan. I definetly go with Ethan. 90% of 'metal' is crap.
Im with ethan on almost everything. Slayer and slipshit shouldnt be in the same sentance.
I feel like im right in the middle between Doc and Ethan's stance since I like the nastier stuff and the DIY work ethic of the of what people would consider "genuine" metal but also like alot of "polished" more well known bands that test the waters of melody and cleans. At the end of the day just enjoy what you enjoy
What's up with Doc?
Next time get someone who knows what the conversation is about.
Love the other hosts and Ethan is great but after 12 minutes of Doc's nonsense I stopped watching.
Why is the guitarist of bad wolves even in there? No wonder he hates that shit.
I cringed so fucking hard when don referenced Parkway Drive as being a truly heavy band
the maiden fan doesn’t seem to understand the core of what’s being discussed
also, PM is what brought me here. Ethan pummels all.
9:20 "IT'S BEEN SOFT" hahahaha his response made me laugh. Although I disagree he seems to be a cool dude
Love Ethan, doc ruins this video.
On the Lamb of God comment about staying hard throughout, Randy is putting out clean vocals now on the last two albums. Isn't that "mainstream singing"?
So if a band sings with clean its mainstream?
Oh shit Lee McCarthy is in Vermin Womb too? Love that band
12:45 absolute gold
So funny to see fellow armwrestling fans here and not in Engins live chat for once haha.
Katy for the win!!!! She’s the best 🤘🏽🤘🤘🏿❤️
Thank you so much!
I get where Ethan is coming from and I don't think we NEED BMTH and Slipknot to get people into that stuff, but in the age of the Internet it is absolutely is the way a lot of people my generation got into the extreme. That's just the way of it.
Comparing slipknot to cannibal corpse lol. Defend elm Street dude doesn't like extreme extreme metal.
Then saying young heads ain't in the scene is horse shit.
Look at all the fucking bands on Maggot Stomp dude...
A
Doc doesn’t understand that people don’t like that shit at all.
Division is great. It allows things to grow outside of one another. Then you have a lot of different awesome things to dive into and take years of your life from you hahahaha :)
Why is this doc dude here? He’s totally clueless lol. And he needs to stop being so defensive, like damn
Ive had this conversation with and people who dont get it argue like the dude from God Forbid. I think its time to start calling it for what it is. "Selling out"
Look up Anklepants and Prurient. Now that's underground.
I'm with Slipknot on Primitive Man, nothing wrong with it, just not for me! (Ethans Dad) ...........J.K. !
Great shit!!!
The second someone starts talking about Bring me the Horizon they loose the argument.
Slayer brought out Alien Weaponry to be fair.
slipknot been soft.
What about a band the got bigger the heavier they got like Panthers?
Lmao this bad wolves guy probably thinks hes making extreme metal or some shit
Dude with the elm st shirt ruined this
Slipknot was pretty heavy now it is ALOT softer. If they stood with that iowa and self titled sound aggression then it would be different.
Case in point...Candiria. Went sooooo soft.
Amon Amarth is not as big as Cannibal. Slipknot!?? You cant even mention them in this convo.
Never got the hype on Gatecreeper. Why have they gotten so big??
cause they're sick
I thought ethan liked bellwitch...bellwitch is not that extreme.
Wtf is he talking about with Slipknot, Iowa is heavier than all of the following albums combined 😂
I feel Ethan. Iron Maiden, Priest etc is soft and weak to me
Slipknot is crap
Stumbled on this podcast. Besides Ethan, everything else here is total cringe.
wow this don guy is awful
Metal is the worst rock. It’s like mumble rap in hip hop
@Vengeance * inexcusably ignorant comment we just saw
@Vengeance * it’s by far the easiest least talented form of rock by far.
Extremely repetitive riffs, boring bass/rhythm.
Unnecessary drums , none existing vocals or melody. Should I go on ?
@Vengeance * being a lifelong fan of rock in an area known for dance and trance, also being in a band gives me an opinion on rock I think
@Vengeance * that fact you are so offended proves my point 😂😂
What in the actual fuck?
Ethan is dope haha. But the debut Slipknot is one of the darkest, hardest and most chaotic records of all time.
