Update as of 3/31/23: The update is now available for 2020 - 22 Outback, Legacy, and WRX. Here's how to get it! ruclips.net/video/GBG9K2n-nXk/видео.html
Hi Alex, very thorough video as usual. Gotta say, I do wish Subaru would ditch the shiny piano black infotainment bezel. At night it’s fine but in the sunlight all you see is a screen full of greasy fingerprints and smudges covered with a layer of dust.
Coming from a 2011 pre-"infotainment center" Outback, this info will be useful when I get a new one. Thank you! Wireless charging pad question: if you have 2 phones, ex: yours and your spouses, sync'd to CarPlay, and then have one phone on the charging pad and one phone connected with a cable, which phone (both?) will control CarPlay?
I’m at Subaru right now. The update wasn’t available to me and they the think it might be due to my firmware needing an update. Will report back. This will take 2 hours and then we’ll see!
I don't know why the back up camera resolution is of such concern to so many people. I drive mostly during daylight hours and wear prescription sunglasses that happen to have polarized lenses -- they alone make the entire infotainment screen difficult to see, and I rarely use the backup camera except when in tight quarters. The resolution doesn't make much of a difference to me as long as I can see what I need to avoid. Now, I suppose if someone were intending to drive down a mountain (or on an interstate highway at high speeds) in reverse, it might make that experience better.
@@mhherr First of all, your paying 30k plus on a car, you should have high res backup camera. Its a standard on most cars in this price range. If you plan on going on mild off road and get in a tricky situation with limited space, I would want that high res camera. In addition, when backing out of a parking spot, the high res camera would give you a better insight and added safety to see how far are cars away. I primarily use my back up camera when coming out of parking spots, so clear and crisp quality is very important to me and other drives who are the same.
I've been in a 2022 Outback for 2 months. MY BIGGEST complaints right from the start are those tiny fan speed buttons and the heated seat option taking you to a second level menu. I feel the new infotainment system is a distraction in relation to those tiny buttons and other points of the lousy digital layout. I came to Google today to search for the new 2023 and its layout, to see if Subaru realized their layout was awful and hopefully see some improvements. Also, to see if anyone could tell me if I'll eventually be able to update my 2022 to the 2023's infotainment digital layout. I was happy to find your video that showed me all the changes/upgrades/improvements AND you informed me that YES! I can update my screen! Thank you for this video!
Thanks for the info- did they also address the potrait Android Auto issue with this update? In otherwords does Android Auto have an effective portrait mode now?
Thanks Alex. Can you please use an ANDROID PHONE as well for demonstration. We Android users would love to know, if Android Auto is now supported in full-screen mode or not. Thanks
Fake non functional vents are fucking disgusting, and fake exhaust chrome on plastic bars, most car people with taste hate this shit yet the manufacturer designers are fuckwits and still doing it. I like the car kinda but I would definitely cut out the squares to make it actually a vent...
Update as of 3/22/23: An update was just released a few days ago! I've had a few people reach out to let me know it's possible and they have completed the latest update to include the new hvac controls as well as a new AVH button that is easily accessible on the home screen. I'll make an update video soon covering the details and how to go about doing this!
Gosh, I know the Outback is your personal favorite, but I wish you would have dedicated videos for the 2023 Forester. We just traded in a very, very old Ford Escape for the 2923 Forester and we’re lost! So many gadgets and screens. Oh, and we’re seniors, so that may be why we’re having difficulty adapting. 😊
I have a 2020 Subaru Outback Outdoor XT and I was wondering if the update with have the wireless android auto future? I think the other infotainment screen updates too. Great video!
Does Android Auto load in portrait mode like Apple Carplay in the 2023 Outback? I saw in some articles that it did, but would be create if you could confirm.
Hello Alex. I have a 2022 Outback and performed the recent update but my screen has not changed. The seat heater and A/C buttons did not change as you explained. Is there something else I need do to activate.
Has the sound-insulating front door glass been removed on the 2023 XT trims? Not seeing this feature mentioned in any official materials for 2023 as compared to 2022.
I am supposed to pick up a 23 Legacy Touring in a week or so and just received an email from my local dealership saying there's been a stop sale on 23 Legacy's and Outbacks due to Starlink button issues and they aren't sure how long it'll be to get fixed. Have you heard anything about this issue? I can't find anything online about it.
This was great!! I’m so excited for my 2023 I ordered and now I know a little more about it and what to expect when it comes. Thanks Alex, glad I found you and subscribed-I’ve learned so much.

yes, this has affected all 2023 Outback/Legacy except for the base trim due to am issue with the SOS button. Subaru expects to have a fix for this soon.
I notice you have a "Display Off" icon in your menu screen. Does this turn off the display without turning off audio? Is there a way to get this feature on my car?
When the display is turned off, it also turns off the audio. You can however still use your climate controls on the touch screen even with the display off.
Okay, finished at Subaru. My firmware was up to date. They informed me that the new software update won’t be available to download for a couple weeks. That’s the latest from Subaru themselves….
Earlier today I was complaining about the lack of acceleration power in my 2020 Forester. I ended up looking at 3 of your videos on the new 2023 Outback, called my dealer, & I will be getting my new Outback XT the first of December. Thank you for making things simple enough that even I can understand and appreciate everything the new Outback has to offer. Urabus.
Hello I am driving a 2022 WRX, is this update also affecting the Android app? it sucks such waste on the big screen! and I dont feel like changing from samsung to apple hahaha
I wish Subaru send a software update for the 2020 and up Outback: wireless Android Auto and Car play, I mean a lot of other cars maker had that working for years now.
We will get an update but wireless AA and Car Play will be for 2023 only. However you can do what I did and buy a dongle to make it wireless. I bought on called AA Wireless amd it works great. Many options for Wireless Car Play receivers as well.
Your videos are great. I just ordered a 2023 Outback Touring. My question is can you connect two iPhones to apple car play and if so how do you distinguish the two.
Can you help me ¡¡¡¡. a few days ago I had a problem with my Subaru Outback 2020, I downloaded the system update, it restarted as usual but the screen stayed frozen as if it were loading the update, 15 days have passed and still no I can't use any screen function. Does anyone know how I can solve this error? Neither button works nor does the normal reset. I already disconnected the battery and it didn't work either. Eyesight doesn't work
I should have added, I was alerted by Subaru of this update. I assumed it was the update that you (Alex) was talking about. No noticeable changes. Is there an additional update coming with the changes highlighted in this video? FWIW - you do great videos, thank you the effort.
I seem to have confused a lot of people with this one lol. I'm in a lower trim option that doesn't have the push button start. However, all but two trim levels in the Outback line-up have push button start.
I'm curious about Subaru windshields...I had a small rock hit my windshield about a month ago and it resulted in a large crack all across my windshield. I filed an insurance claim and got the windshield replaced and then 3 days later discovered a chip in my brand new windshield. Did some research and learned that a lot of people have been complaining about windshields chipping and cracking easily.
i have a 2019 forester and had 2-3 chips until one of them turned into a crack overnight. got it replaced thru insurance, then a month later got another giant chip on the passenger side, which was repaired for free thru insurance. within 6 months i got another one on the driver side, which would require the whole windshield to be replaced as per our insurance agency. i just repaired it myself with a kit. i haven’t had any more large chips that need repairing the past year and a bit, but there are a lot of tiny chips here and there
I have a 2022 Subaru Outback and I had a stress fracture about a month after I got bought it. Subaru agreed that it wasn't my fault and replaced it for free. 12 months later a rock hit the passenger side of the windshield and I watched 2 cracks travel about 16 inches toward the center. It's such a shame that Subaru uses windshields that are so fragile and thin. One thing I hate about Subaru's with eyesight.
Hi Alex, For premium models 2022/2023, can a front mount camera be installed? Also, can the Auto Dim Homelink mirror be replaced with a Digital rearview mirror? Thank you
Hi Alex, I saw your previous video that mentioned the screen update putting the seat heater controls on the home screen without having to go one layer in to get to them. I mentioned that at my dealer the last time I had the car in for routine service. Naturally, they didn't know anything about it yet. So just for clarification, you're saying the new screen configuration will be available for update to 20-22 model years through wi-fi? This may be hoping for too much, but do you know if the wireless ACP and AA will be included in that? Thanks!
i have my 11 month old 2024 crosstrek base model ....not sure if there's an upgrade for the dual screen? just in case you some informations to share....many thanks as always....
Alex, for the '23 outback, can you possibly show an example of connecting an Android phone wirelessly with Android auto? It would be nice to see how Android auto works with the new update as well! Thanks
Great stuff! Glad to see your comments about the AVH app included in the software update. Just got a 2022 Outback Wilderness and I can’t wait to get the upgrade.
Alex, I have a '24 Outback LTD it seems everytime on get in the car with my phone on it automatically goes (without it being turned on) to my Google maps for nav. The same happens with my wife's Iphone with Waze. If i just want to use the car nav how do I stop this and still have my phone function normally?
Absolutely HATE 2022 Outback base model touchscreen controls for HVAC. Horrible design decision. Was hoping this video would indicate improvement. Nope. Will not buy another Subaru until they fix this. I shouldn't have to look at a touchscreen to adjust the cabin climate controls (temperature, fan speed, vent control). It's not safe.
I still think they should put the AVH button where that wireless CarPlay connection bottom is. Even though people who had the new 2023 Outback they will only use that setting once in the while.
I just purchased a 2023 Outback Onyx Premium (our 4th Subaru) and I was not fond of the new style front end, but felt I could live with it. I then found out that they do not have cloth seats in that trim level it was either leather (which I do not care for) or the new StarTex. After several weeks of ownership, I can safely say I HATE the StarTex "plastic" seats. Why Subaru will not offer a cloth seat in all trim levels is beyond me. It appears Subaru is trying to make the Outback more "Jeep" like and rugged looking and they are failing at it. Stick to what worked for you in the past.
How do I reset my driver profile on a 2023 Outback? Why the memory buttons on the driver's door don't automatically sync with the profile is beyond me. I guess it wouldn't be Subaru if they didn't make things unnecessarily complicated.
f you make one trip a month it is ok but my work requires many stops a day. AVH is easier to get but still.... Every time i start engine i have to hit 164 buttons, like in helicopter - multiplied by number of stops, (i have more accessories to turn on that always go off with engine off). Beside this shortcut you have a setting in Settings but it does not hold either. They need to hire new designer for human-system interaction. I use two phones, private and company - Bluetooth just gets Blue Screen of Death. CarPlay thru wire was a mistake to begin with. You still have to use cable for charging, not every Subaru has a wireless charger. Main has one, but i still use cable for Car Play. Isn't it simply stupid? Who works there?!?!? The only reason i use Subaru is the engine and 4x4 period(.) All the "Infotainment" could be removed being useless as i lost patience to use it.
My biggest complaint is Android Auto still doesn't go full screen. I bought my 2020 Legacy for the big screen and the map barely takes up a third of the screen. There's so much wasted space. CarPlay was able to update and go full screen. What is the issue with Android Auto and my Subaru screen?
Sir, can you please explain the hiccup (at least in a 2022 Impreza) where the android auto from two phones may hiccup in bluetooth even if the two phones are in different cars and one was not asking to join the bluetooth? My actual problem is going from a s10 prev. day to my phine Ultra 22 and android auto keeps dropping. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thank you!
I'm happy with my 22 Onyx but boy the jinky usb ports are so bad. Really wish I had wireless. How in the world does a car company make such a nice car but use such shoddy ports??!! My moms 19 Forster same problem. While plugged in if you even look in the direction of your phone it disconnects reconnects.
Bought a 2020 outback and the battery died and car broke down. Common problem for new Outback’s, crappy batteries. Would not take a charge. Replaced the battery so we could drive the car ASAP. Subaru would not compensate for the battery, despite a 3 year warranty. I guess they prefer you to drop your plans for the day, call a tow truck, wait for them to repair it, then drive back home later that night.
Why!!! Why do they keep making every new car more ugly!!! Really like the company but can't look at the car without being disappointed. Only the BRZ is attractive. There has to be better designers out there. Let's do better... not worse as time goes on. At least they updated the infotainment... Now it looks only 2 years old.
I did the software update to my 2021 Subie Outback, but there was no change on the screen. the lower area of the 11 inch+ screen is exactly the same with small fan buttons and another screen level to change the seat heaters. Any ideas? BTW - the total time to download, install and initialize the SW was about an hour. much longer than i expected. Appreciate any help! Thank you, Aaron S
I have a 2022 legacy and Android Auto is awful in it. Will they upgrade Android Auto to make it look like the 23 model? Because I think the 23 model is going to be like Apple CarPlay where it takes up the whole screen. If this is the case, oh my god I will love my 22 so much more than I already do now. So yes, is that what is going to happen?
Hi Alex, will the WIFI connection be stopped after your carplay is connected? I noticed on your phone and mine is the same. I can't connect to wifi in my garage with carplay connected to my subaru. How can I download data for everything? Thanks
Not a fan of the bumper and wheel cladding. I disagree with your take the fake vents “look cool”. Also my god, slim down that monstrosity on the roof. (Not sure “cool” is the adjective people associate with the Outback.)
Alex tell Subaru that they are just pissing off all the owners of 2020 - 2022 Outbacks. Horrible customer service to not have included those software features in the first place.
Thank you for the video, very informative! I'm happy to see the improvements to the software. Nice having the heated/cooled seats on the main page now. Only wish the auto hold feature would default to its last setting. Or perhaps replace the phone settings button next to the home button with the auto hold button. I think this would have been better. After all, how often do you actually have to access phone settings compared to using auto hold?
YUP! My 2022 OBW has an empty space to the right of the HOME button. Its the perfect spot for the AVH button to go! Every time I start the car I have to go into the settings to turn "Auto Start/Stop" OFF and "AVH" ON, such a pain!
I expect this to come to my 22 WRX premium in a reasonable time frame. Within the next 3 months. If I doesn't I will slam on every forum and trade my car. No reason they can't make this work on the 11.6 in my wrx.

it's literally unreadable sometimes.

We will get an update but wireless AA and Car Play will be for 2023 only. However you can do what I did and buy a dongle to make it wireless. I bought on called AA Wireless amd it works great. Many options for Wireless Car Play receivers as well.
@@Venom011 Hey thanks for the info, which one did you get, and can we sync 2 different cell phones?
Did you say the 2023 Outback does not have GPS?
2023 has the same navigation option as the 2022, as an optional package. All trim levels however have gps through Apple CarPlay/android auto
Your videos are great. I just ordered a 2023 Outback Touring. My question is can you connect two iPhones
to apple car play and if so how do you distinguish the two.
Yes, you can connect more than one phone. Only one will be connected at a time. You can switch back and forth between the two quickly
@@alexpmo Thank you for the reply
Finally!!!!! Going to update my car now
Does not appear to be available for my 22 Outback Wilderness yet. Maybe at my next oilchange/service my dealer will do it for me
Thanks Alex!! Just picked up my 2023 OBW a few hours ago. Learning lots keep up the good work
Can you help me ¡¡¡¡. a few days ago I had a problem with my Subaru Outback 2020, I downloaded the system update, it restarted as usual but the screen stayed frozen as if it were loading the update, 15 days have passed and still no I can't use any screen function. Does anyone know how I can solve this error?
Neither button works nor does the normal reset.
I already disconnected the battery and it didn't work either.
Eyesight doesn't work
I just did the update on my 2022 Outback. Nothing changed as best as I can tell. Anyone else have better luck?
I should have added, I was alerted by Subaru of this update. I assumed it was the update that you (Alex) was talking about. No noticeable changes. Is there an additional update coming with the changes highlighted in this video?
FWIW - you do great videos, thank you the effort.
Thanks Jeff! This update has not been released yet. I've been told it will be later this year at the earliest
Is 2023 going back to a key ignition instead of the push start? I thought I saw you turn a key
Yes that issue is a concern. A significant concern.
Hi Alex, For premium models 2022/2023, can a front mount camera be installed? Also, can the Auto Dim Homelink mirror be replaced with a Digital rearview mirror? Thank you
The front looks ugly to me
Seems like NORDVPN stopped the wireless from working on my 2023 Outback Onyx. I removed NORDVPN and the wireless started working on my iPhone.
Thanks!
Alex, did Subaru get rid of the push button start? I noticed that there is a key in the ignition spot instead of a button like my 2021.
i have my 11 month old 2024 crosstrek base model ....not sure if there's an upgrade for the dual screen? just in case you some informations to share....many thanks as always....
Alex, When do you think Subaru will send an over the air update for the new buttons for the 2022's?
My guess is within a month or two
Alex, I have a '24 Outback LTD it seems everytime on get in the car with my phone on it automatically goes (without it being turned on) to my Google maps for nav.
3:30 you’re welcome
Is the AVH update specific to the 2023 Outback or will it be available for the 2020-2022 Outbacks with software update?
Will be available for 2020-2022. As far as I know, the wireless CarPlay will be the only feature not on the previous years
Improved? Yes, but still not as easy to use the real switches for HVAC & seat heaters on my 2017 OB. Too many whiz bang gadgets on new OBs.
Bummer. The new Info Screen is not Polarized Lense friendly. What are they thinking?? GRRRRRRRRR Pertaining to the Map view
Hey Alex, do you think this 2023 Outback 11.6 update will work in other markets? - like in the UK ?.
I expect this to come to my 22 WRX premium in a reasonable time frame. Within the next 3 months. If I doesn't I will slam on every forum and trade my car. No reason they can't make this work on the 11.6 in my wrx.
