    This is a great video. I like the way the camera has been located on the trailer chassis so you get a perfect view of what is taking place.So many of these videos show the footage from the side and you don`t get to see exactly what you need to see...great job.

    Thanx for the video! came here to see how the European truckers do that. our air connectors are different (two which are called gladhands) and one different electric connector. trailer brakes are controlled from the cab as the tractor (2 different knobs). the license plate on the trailer doesn't change, and "Trailer legs" we call "Landing gear" - cheers from Canada!

    One other thing to add ,is compere the distance of the king pin to the landing legs with the distance of the filth wheel to the rear lights of the tractor , to make sure you have room to engage trailer without bashing rear lights into landing legs.
    And also check the total height of front of trailer from the ground once coupled up to the tractor as that can vary with different units...

    At my company - When we connect we lift the suspension up so the legs are just off the ground then we do the tug test otherwise you will damage the legs

    • @2StartSteve
      @2StartSteve 8 лет назад +1

      +Rupert Loseby Thanks for your message. The reason for checking the height is to ensure the tractor unit lifts the trailer just off the landing legs. This will stop them form getting damaged. If you connect then raise the suspension the damage could already have been done by the king pin not being central in the fifth wheel and sliding the legs across the ground. Hope this helps :-)

      You could also lower unit suspension all the way down then reverse under trailer stopping when fifth wheel is under trailer... raise unit suspension all the way up.. then legs are off the floor then reverse into kingpin.. this way stops grease from getting on the end of the trailer and damaging legs

    • @symbolicof
      @symbolicof 8 лет назад +1

      +Ciarán Mc Ardle He seemed to always start with the air lines before the electrical lines. So when coupling, he connected the air lines first. When uncoupling, he seemed to remove the airlines first.Ideally you would want them not to get tangled up, so start from 1 end and work to the other end

    A tip when I done my Class 1, remember BLANK - Brake, Legs, Air, Number plate, King Pin, switch this around when coupling.

    • @cjatruckphotos
      @cjatruckphotos 2 года назад

      The way my dad and I do it is get out from drivers side and get your gloves on (keep them in drivers side locker as it’s easier for you) then go to the passengers side. Do the airlines and electric lines and everything then do your dog clip and release the king pin. Go to the trailer legs and lower them. Grab the number plate from the back and pin it to the catwalk of the truck (again do this on drivers side to make life easier). When coupling do it in reverse but still put gloves on.

    I drive in europe and trailer has its own registration. No need to add the one from the front part. The trailer brakes are also automaticallly applied once you disconnect the cables. We also raise the trailer a little bit using the back suspensions, once the pin is released. Obviously you need to lower the legs a bit more, before you move forward.

    • @2StartLtd

      Hi Bogdan! The answer for that is to connect the red and yellow, leaving the blue off. Due to the couplings, It's impossible to get them mixed round. Red: Emergency, Yellow: Service, Blue: Auxiliary.

    He doesn't mention this in the video. Once the trailer is coupled to the tractor unit, would you not have to build up air in the trailer brakes?

    • @DAM89
      @DAM89 8 лет назад

      After coupling, the brake air pressure indicators in the cab would be low and most likely sound an alarm warning that the pressure is low, you would then increase air pressure by reving the engine for about 30 seconds or so, at least this is what I was taught.

    • @symbolicof

      +DMESSER ok cool. thnx

    • @2StartSteve
      @2StartSteve 8 лет назад +1

      This depends on the trailer. If the air pressure is good in the trailer once connected you will be ready to got. If the air pressure is low it will need to be built up before you will be able to move the trailer.
