Thank you! This is what i was looking for my American Track Simulator.
Great content, it assisted with the passing of my CDL permit
One of best video in coupling and uncoupling
This video is very clear and easy to understand. Nice truck and trailer.
In the UK we have a special locking clip that stops the fifth wheel handle jumping out. You can also fit a padlock.
I appreciate this video as a “non-truck driver” for giving a more detailed view of the mechanism of the fifth wheel/kingpin, and the steps involved in coupling/non-coupling.
Good video! Clear and slow. It's exactly what our local examiners are looking for.
This is the BEST video ever and also the CLEANEST!!!!!!!
Sure, the seasoned driver can and will do this much faster. Combining or skipping a few steps. However, as a product demo goes, this is a great video. Also, I am in trucking school now. This is a better explanation then anything the school has given
Never ever skip anything when hooking or uncoupling. Stick to a routine always. Skipping means you will forget something. Dumping a trailer on her nose, is never a good thing.
It is a great video, loved the angle below the trailer showing the kingpin securing to the 5th wheel. Great job!
Absolutely correct alignments are the basics for any coupled machines
very good and educational video. thanks much for sharing it and uploading.
I don't know what school you went to (and not putting it down) but the one I went to (and DDS where I tested) required that we know this as part of our testing (some was on the written and some on the pre trip inspection test). But they also told us that they were teaching us enough to get our liscense and that it was up to the company we hire with to teach us the rest.
Thank you very helpful ☺
Thank you. Been studying for my CDL. I'm sure this will help alot.
I don't think I've ever seen a fifth wheel that clean in my life....
I agree that this description is overkill. the mentions of air-ride suspension almost made me pull out my hair.
We don't call them tractors here in Australia, a tractor here, is something you use on a farm to slash the paddocks with. We call them Prime Movers, Semi's or simply a Truck. Anyway good video and thanks for sharing.
Good video, no mention of checking for clearance between the landing legs and back of tractor unit when adjusting fifth wheel.
this video is excellent...very clean
Very clear great video thanks
Awesome video...thanks!
ive never done all these steps but its probably a good idea
nice just what i was looking for
I realy apprecciate this job...
One day i ld to be one like us....
excellent video
great video one of the best explanations I've seen so far especially for us new guys
Lovely
love how they say their finally concerned
Im glad i watched this, i could never workout a simple task my self :)
With everything you went over, you forgot to take the chocks out from the back wheels.I hope he felt them as he pulled away
Outlet ä
VERY GOOD VIDEO
Excellent video, ver y noche, Thanks.
Best coupling video forsure
This is useful
That brings up a good point too. The video tells you to make sure your load is secure before attaching to the trailer. But they didn't open the trailer up to see if the load was secured right before he just backed up into it. lol..
Well done. Pretty much what I do. The more drivers take care, the less we'd have incidents. Cheers!
Never install the electric and air hoses until AFTER you've done the tug test. Connecting them should be the last thing you do prior to getting in the truck after you've done everything else.
Nope, not true. You don't know the condition of the trailer brakes. Unless you're gonna waste time with chocks, hooking up the air lines is safety.
julie r the "tug test" is purely to see if the king pin is actually secure in the fifth wheel before you do anything else, they have been known to 'click' in place but not lock... plus 95% of High Tech European Trailers have air operated parking brakes, the new trailers engage the park brake automatically when the lines are disconnected thus removing the need to chock the wheels like it's still 1963...
i drove for over 40 years.the tug is to make sure the trailer is hooked up.you don't connect the pigtails until then, cause if it's not hooked you stand the chance of tearing the pigtails off the tractor.after your done with the tug then get out hook the pigtails.then get under it an look at the 5th wheel locks.
Jessie James rip the pig tails off the tractor? Truck driver for sure.
@@RealMiniatures right.. You tug test before hooking the lines.
if i was to do that every time i picked up a trailer i would need a extra hour on the day
great video for a rooky driver thanks a million
Cool
I did all these things except chocking the wheels. If I was dropping the trailer on a yard, I didn't chock the wheels, but if dropping in a door at a shipper or receiver, I chocked the wheels if it was required there. You learn to do a lot of double-checking if you've ever had another driver tamper with your equipment while you're sleeping in a truck stop lot. It never happened to me, but I've seen lots of incidents.
thanks for loading
As for why its called a fifth wheel? Many different Internet explanations, but I believe it's from when vehicles had chain steering (old horse and steam carts) where there was a central "5th" wheel underneath the carriage which operated it
When coupling to a trailer do you ever have to lower the fifth wheel ??
It does'nt get better than this, 5 star material! I am definately going to use this right in trucking school
what is the transmission of this tractor? Great video!!
good shit
To answer Sidharth Parmar Question The early tractor trucks only had 4 wheels on the ground, not 10 or 14 like now, so the hitch on the truck is the "fifth" wheel because it looks like a wheel.
What's with the tandems (trailer wheels) having such a wide variety of placements? Some are close together. Some are apart like this trailer and some close to the rear while others are further up the trailer? Are they adjustable or that just depends on trailer model?
+Dennis Santos weight distribution as well as change the way a trailer tracks in city or highway driving
Back up check the trailer height raise or lower if needed hook up tug test it hook up lines raise the landing gear and get the fuck going
A-men driver. Amen!
When you do your road test your supposed to hook up your air lines before you pin the trailer...
I don't even get out the truck to attach my trailer. I simply press right on the d-pad to detach it ;)
Refresher course for me.
is a verry sucsses truck in u.s.
Being around these since I could walk now 48,never did all this.just hook tug(as he called it) and go.
of course he has a brand new truck and this guy is new if he does it this long slow way
the reason why this stuff isnt done is a trucker can spot anything wrong with a fifth wheel in a second
I would do all of this but that's just me. Doing things proper usually means no mistakes.
cara muito loko o piterbilte
Tug test AFTER connecting gladhands? If you did happen to pop out, you ALSO just potentially destroyed your lines too.

I guess chocking the wheels of the trailer stop it from moving backward if there is trailer brake failure that you couldn't see nor know about until you do your inspection of the trailer?
Do companies even give you chocks with your truck?
But e nice to have a brand new truck.
All you young so called truck drivers need to watch drivers with 30-40 years exp.
Richard Douglas then its a good thing my granpa's been truckink a lot
hahaha ya me too, 31 years LOL I like that slam it jam it and grab a gear.
I do everything except blocking the trailer wheels. After dropping a trailer very early in my driving career from having a gap between the trailer and fifth wheel (that passed 3 tug tests and stayed on for a 1/4 mile) I am very careful.
thats rite,,,me to,to lock your trailer brakes while backing under it,,that was because the old trailers dident have a parking brake...
Why is it called the Fifth wheel? I assume it has nothing to do with the name "18 Wheeler" since that refers to the amount of tires on the cab and trailer combined.
Also, truck cabs are referred to as tractors?
And the legs for trailers are called landing gear? That one seems kinda odd to me since landing gear until now has only been the name that applies to planes, space shuttles, and helicopters. Legs seems like it'd have been a more fitting term since those things kinda seem like, well, legs for the trailer to stand on.
Allow me to answer a few of your questions:
1: It's called the "5th wheel", because in the days of old, before ball hitches, and other modern coupling technologies were invented ( noting that we're talking about an era of horse drawn buggies ), the trailer was indeed attached to a horizontally placed wagon wheel, identical to the other 4, making it indeed the 5th wheel on the vehicle. They used a wheel, because it's rotational properties promoted turning ability. In more modern times, the new standardized system simply retains the name.
2: And yes, the "proper" technical term for the actual "truck" is "tractor". Because it provides the traction. Technically, a semi is properly known as a "tractor/trailer". But people typically use "semi" to avoid confusion with the farm vehicle by the same name.
3: "Landing" in this case, refers to being supported solely by the land it stands on, instead of partially upon the tractor. Those "legs" are the "gear", which "lands" the trailer. Confusing, though. I know.
Though it's worth noting that motorcycles can also now be equipped with "landing gear", which is a set of "training wheels" of sorts, that retract when the bike is moving more than a certain speed, and extend when it drops below it. It's been quite some time since the term "landing gear" applied solely to an aircraft.
Someone asked a question, and I answered it. What are you getting at?
He was stating that as a consumer of large quantities (correct spelling) of information, he thoroughly enjoyed the very detailed explanation that you gave.
Eh...maybe. To me it sounded a little sarcastic. Maybe I misread the tone. Apologies for that, if so.
Ah. My mistake, then, and I apologize wholeheartedly.
It's great to meet more people who are as fond of general knowledge ( even if mostly useless ) as I am.
Safe travels, Gregg.
Trucker like yes
Do I know u sweetie
Ok
but why it is named as the FIFTH Wheel... any ans??
The most import part is the tug test!!!!!
Soooo... how's Swift treatin ya?
Back up to the trailer, stop before touching the 5th wheel to the trailer. Get out, hook up air lines. Enter truck, pull spike and back under trailer. Should the spring brakes be un operational, the trailer will not roll away when you try and couple.
If it is not YOUR trailer, who knows who rode it how hard and left it for dead. The brakes may not even work.
Flat level surface...that seems like a joke to me. How many docks are flat level surfaces? Most places I've worked have inclines at an angle lol
and when a truckers getting a trailer theres always going to be things around it truckers have to hook up to trailers that our inchs from the other trailer
If your not inspecting it, your skipping alot of your pretrip. Granted we dont chock the wheels. Also most OTR companies have the 5th wheel bolted so it cant be slid (avoiding cab damage).
Did this vid just start out stating that Fontain finally is concerned with safety? Why such the long wait?
This tutorial was written by a bunch of lawyers.
Did my guy litterly just put safety glasses on to hook up? But he's not wearing a safety vest? Lol wtf
Bollocks! Why wasn't the handle secured with the security chain and clip!
This movie is now available to wаaаatсh here => twitter.com/7a5cd40307585bf4d/status/824453567545094144 Ultrа Couрling and Unсccouрling
holy crap the kingpin(?) is unexpectedly tiny
NOBODY DOES THIS
Lol @ shutting off the engine to check the fifth wheel....
do you want to be under the trailer when the truck jumps into gear and rolls over your ass? Not bloody likely to happen, but it is still a possible situation. So I will laugh when you go under the wheels of the trailer cause you happened to get into that unlikely situation
I watched Coupling full movie here twitter.com/eaa75e29fdb9aeb95/status/824453567545094144
No, that is not a "possible situation" in a manual transmission vehicle placed in neutral, with the parking brake applied. Any situation where the vehicle would roll back and run you over, is a situation where the engine running is not a factor. The sheer amount of force required to force the transmission into gear without a clutch pull, would not be possible without direct human involvement.
So don't expect to laugh anytime soon.
Right because I have 10 mins to couple my trailer lol
Doing it this way might need half the day to hook up
ภาษาไทยมีไหม
just smash the truck under the trailor and wind legs up and go , all that checking crap the day wil lbe over .
My dad
chair
Aren't you supposed to charge the trailer?????
Dude had a Marmon. A fucking Marmon tractor of all things. Too bad they used a plain old columbia for the interior shots.
I noticed it too, what model is it a late P57? I had the chance to buy one made in the late 80s a few years ago, but I didn't think I could get replacement cosmetic parts.
no way
I need to get to bed.
How many truckers do you know that do all this lol
Uhhh....you're on the internet. Check it out.
These shows are by the Manufacturer. They are the proper way to Hookup and Uncouple a trailer. Schools may teach you one way, so when you get to your Road test, you will pass. As time carries on, in your trucking career, you will cheat the system at some point in time, and that us when you will get bitten. Get yourself into a Routine when doing both. Never change from that routine, just because you want to get home or to a party. You will miss something and that will end your Night right then and there. Drive Safe Always your Family depends on you doing so.
So you yanks dont have a saftey dog clip??
Big guking deal
I have never listened to so much crap in all my life.
why? I ask as a profane in the field
