Schizophrenia | A Doctor's Perspective

  • In this video, psychiatrist, Dr. Domenick Sportelli, provides you with an in-depth understanding of life with schizophrenia. What is it like to experience schizophrenia, from a psychiatry perspective and different signs you can look for.
Dr. Dom works on the front lines of psychology in the psychiatric ER. He sees patients who experience psychosis, paranoid delusions, and hallucinations. However, he says the public perception of schizophrenia is far from the truth. He explains that half the battle is that people don’t receive the right treatment because they may not even receive the right diagnosis.

Can we talk about how people like Doctor Phil have guests on their show who very likely have serious mental disorders but he just treats them like they're "crazy" and never addresses the possibility of mental illness. One show that I saw (I don't watch him regularly) had an older woman who believes she's been pregnant for years... to me, I feel like she's probably schizophrenic but he embarrassed her to get more viewers.
      This adds to the problem.

The worst part about living with it for me personally is the distrust and suspiciousness other people have of me if they know about my illness, leading me to be very uncomfortable around people and leading me to distrust people, leading to isolation and loneliness. Schizophrenia doesn't make us want to hurt people, it actually makes us very afraid that people are going to hurt us. I wish I could be accepted and understood for being a bit different than most people, not ostracized and treated like a 3rd class citizen. Such is the nature of this illness I guess.

My son admitted himself to the ER during psychosis. He left while in triage. The next day he was back alone, couldn't connect with society and I was not arriving from out of town until the next day. I talked with him in the last hour before he took his life. He wept deeply about the loneliness being unbearable and that he needed to feel loved. I wish I had known how dangerous it was to leave him for four days. I feel such sorrow in not knowing better. In honor of my son, be kind to others always- human connection is such a struggle for some mental illnesses. He died with the most awful type of loneliness. No one should die that way.

Your story is so tragic and personal for me. My son is bipolar. I am lucky because he absolutely looks for his medications which are lif-savers, but I remember painfully the days he refused to take meds and how bizzare he was. I always worried about suicide, a memory that still makes me shudder. And I know quite a few people who have committed suicide. One young boy got out of his car and walked in front of a moving train. Suicide prevention is so low down on people's and governments interest, but then so is mental health in general. So sad and I am grieving for you. The one thing I ask of you is to please not blame yourself. You can't control another person's actions, no matter how hard you try. If it didn't happen tjen, it would have happened another time and you cannot be with him 24 hrs a day, and he woukd have found another way. Grieve for him but FORGIVE YOURSELF

I was driving home today and saw a guy walking with a ruck sack. It was a hot day, and where he was made my empathic side kick in. So I turned around and asked if he needed a ride. He got in and I asked where he was headed. He said he was walking to the gas station to see if they would let him fill up his water bottle. (From where I picked him up to the gas station is an easy 7 miles.) We started talking and what not, and I, as a INFJ, hate small talk. I asked where he lived and he told me he was staying under a bridge. I asked if his homelessness was due to addiction issues or mental illness. Turns out he is schizophrenic. I took him and bought him a meal. Made sure he had stuff to drink overnight. I wanted to offer him to stay overnight because he didn’t have any kind of shelter, but honestly I was a little afraid to do that. I felt like the worst human being when I dropped him off at the bridge....I’m going to get him a pup tent and sleeping bag tomorrow. See if he will allow me to take him to family and job services. He would be eligible for assistance right? I felt so sorry for him, what he said about growing up and how his family doesn’t want him around. Like WTF? I don’t know why I’m commenting about this. It’s just hard knowing you can’t help someone who can’t even help themselves. 😞

Makes you wonder what humans did to deserve the amount of excrement dealt to us.

Original German Heckmeck at its best !
      I do not believe it!
Although? I think already that I believe that because what I believe to think, that I believe that I believe to think, that it is complicated enough and sometimes not even succeeds, if one tries it, tries to think whether one is correct with its estimate.
You didn't do that, you couldn't be right either because that's hard, I think, but I'll get to that later.
So back to you and the why...
      ... and the other guy with his backpack ... ... ... ^^
Little by little, until you reach the gas station, you learn more about your passenger.
Your assumption about his situation is confirmed. Problem-free looks different.
No water, no food, no tent, instead self-chosen 17,5km distance to the next refueling station, what possible reason could there be to choose such a sleeping place? To be able to fill up a water bottle in such a way that a sporty 35km distance is covered, what do you think of that? Does it sound nonsensical?
Probably that is not the reason. It slowly dawns on you that something is wrong with this situation and even if you can't put your finger on it, it's not sporty but reckless to walk an almost marathon distance with only one water bottle, it's not a good plan but not the complete absence of one either, it's still a disaster!
We give ourselves these explanations with large self-conception without knowing which explanations it are which our opposite gives itself, can we "such nonsense" at all something win? bad thinking leads to bad behavior that leads to it us that can become not at all first consciously like automatically we make there density if we can win a thing only primarily one, a conviction the other one has become in that way crazy with which now its thinking as result MUST be questioned, from others anyway however all others before from it!
That is a condition which comes about again and again to the big sorrow of the concerned.
It is much, it should not have become a novel up to here only because it is much.
Strange or, I mean with much also much or simply, enough.
Enough, I mean, means good enough.
To help, to be a support, in the time where nobody else was there to argue with you about this task.
enough is, I hold on to this statement, It is much.
No contradiction! It is a lot of strange, more than enough to want to rethink, for example, to stop thinking that no one can be helped who can not help themselves.
This does not have to be.
For example, to stop feeling like the worst person in the world after being helpful to others or trying to be. Nevertheless, that was decent of you if at some later time it meant to put someone in a place where they had it less good than you wanted or wanted them to have it.
That does not have to be.
It doesn't have to be when the only sticking point is "knowing how".

Nobody asks to be born with this! It’s already hard enough and many lose all hope because of the stigma behind it. We need to bring more awareness on mental health issues especially these. Imagine how many homeless ppl because of the lack of support or knowledge! Please continue to spread the word and encourage others to seek help! Also I cannot stress this enough. DO NOT be afraid of getting treatment ! If the doctor isn’t helpful enough change your doctor! But don’t give up on yourself !!!

Why are you being so negative? There are many conditions out there that have no permanent “cure”. But there are medicines and treatments that can help people have fulfilling lives.
There’s no cure for bipolar disorder. But there are many treatments and medicines that help people with bipolar disorder have happy and successful lives. Jane Pauley from Dateline NBC has bipolar disorder yet she was able to have a successful career in journalism.
Comedian Darrell Hammond from Saturday Night Live has schizophrenia. That hasn’t stopped him from being one of the longest running cast members of the show.
HIV was originally seen as a death sentence. Now there are medicines and treatments that help people with HIV live long, healthy lives. There’s no permanent “cure” for HIV, but science and medicine has made huge strides in a relatively short time so that HIV isn’t a death sentence anymore.
It’s not as if science and medicine gave up on people with schizophrenia. New medicines and new treatments are regularly being developed so there is legitimate hope that life can be better for people with schizophrenia.

I’m so damn tired of living with this mental illness. Heart feels like it’s gonna blow up from stress and anxiety, but most of all the paranoia. Can’t leave the house anymore, the world looks like an mild acid trip almost 24/7. The fear has gripped me with claws that leave a mark which never heals, only bleeds more. I want my life back, but at this point, I just want life to end. The void of nothingness seems a lot more calm than the realm of the living

I worked with young men mostly who were experiencing their first psychosis. Many of them were abusing substances which can activate psychosis in vulnerable individuals. They have a very hard time accepting this diagnosis, as did their family. It led me to wonder how many of these folks would never had a psychotic break if they had not abused substances. Most can recover if they avoid substance abuse going forward, but for some their psychosis persists even if they avoid substance abuse. Our jails have many of our folks with psychosis, and many become homeless. We need a better intervention system to help these folks have an optimal life.

He says he quits breathing at night, that he is Jesus or satan. I don’t know what to say or do. He also is very argumentative and calls people names, gets the police called on him because he is outside pounding, crying or yelling. He gets very upset if I give my other clients attention and follows me around. He did have a bad drug addiction in the past so I’m sure that was the breakdown cause. I've spent years trying to avoid what schizophrenia really is because my dad and brother have a severe case of it. My dad was extremely violent and paranoid. Even with meds, he'll say things like Hilary Clinton is his wife. I've avoided understanding it because my mom used to tell me everyday that I had to be careful if I heard voices and such. It ruined me for my entire life. I'm still worried into my 30s I will develop it. Nonetheless, I am still very thankful for this video. Psychoeducation really helps me to become a more integrated person. So thank you again!
Edit a year later: I saw some comments about allowing my dad to live out some of his delusions. Just wanted to say, some delusions are ok to allow him to have but some aren't for my level of comfort. Sometimes he says inappropriate things that I'd even correct a neurotypical person for. His meds allow him to do pretty well and then he'll have a slip up every once in a blue moon, I dunno, I think he'd want us to tell him if something weren't really true. We then have a big chuckle about it. He knows he is schizophrenic and we're always really compassionate with him as he is with us!

I was like you a critical thinker and tried to disapprove the Bible but the more and more I looked into it and went back in history I found out everything in the Bible is true.
As an example look at the story of Sodom and Gamora how it was burned with brimstone and if you go there today the brimstone is still burned into the rock.
Also look at the writings of Josephus he was a historical writer in the time of Jesus Christ they are accurate to what the Bible says.
More than that I’ve seen the Holy Spirit heal people like my brother had cirrhosis of the liver stage 4 and was a violent bipolar for 12 years and I prayed and fasted for him for three days and he was healed instantly. I’ve prayed over a friend of mine that was in a coma and he was awoken out of the coma the same day and healed completely even the doctors could not explain it and were stunned. These are just a few of the miracles I’ve seen.

I hear what you say. You may be right in your assessment of the causes of severe mental health diagnosis but I am plagued with daily suffering. I suffer because the more I learn about the true nature of this world, I realise how true real evil is in control of humanity. I suffered greatly all my life when witnessing the suffering of others, especially in the 3rd world. I’ve led a relatively privileged life in comparison and am comfortable financially but my suffering is not diminished, it is increasing, especially since my son developed schizoaffective disorder some 10yrs ago. His life and ours has been robbed of joy. He’s been in and out of hospital many times and is currently in a rehabilitation facility for the last 6mths. Basically he has no life worth having. His condition doesn’t seem to be improving and the doctor has now started him on Clozapine which is a very powerful and dangerous drug. The treatment he’s had over the years seems to have changed his personality from a caring empathic and intelligent person to a sort of psychopath, with no emotions and an immature and manipulative attitude towards his family. I really fear he is lost and I worry all the time thinking about what the future holds for him. It is the biggest tragedy of my life. I struggle with my own mental health because of this. I even attempted to take my own life, telling my doctor that I really wanted to be euthanised.
I’ve sought and prayed for Jesus to show me the way and been touched by the Holy Spirit but I just pray for Jesus to take my weary soul because I can’t bear the suffering I feel over my son anymore. It’s worse than if he had died. The law should really change to allow people with this suffering to attain help in dying if they so wish, especially when they tell you there is no cure, and the effects of medication is like 24/7 torture. I believe it is the modern western society that is the root cause of the increasing mental health pandemic. If you’re disabled by it and can’t work you’re used as a cash cow for the pharma cos. till your dying day. Even if it may help some who aren’t too badly affected.
Please pray Jesus for me and my son to be quickly relieved from this world. Thank you. 😭🙏

I do Christian deliverance if you need help .
You may have a generational curse on your family . I just did deliverance over another schizophrenic lady that was tormentor for many years it took about four sessions and she has been free and has a clear mind now.
I don’t charge anything or want donations I do it for brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ.
you have to be willing to repent of your sins and get into the word of God .
Schizophrenia is an attack from the devil it causes spirits to put constant thoughts in your brain. Usually the spirit of schizophrenia happens at a young age and many times is generational or comes through because of witchcraft, or the occult , New Age religion sometimes it starts by talking to familiar spirits. It usually starts from a spirit of rejection or rebellion also .

My family just stuck me with him and told me to never let him go to prison or a mental institution. He made my life so unbelievably miserable and seemed to have zero awareness of what he was doing to me. He was a horrible monster and totally ruined my life along with his own.
I thought his death would bring me peace but now I'm filled with regret and anger. I'm also estranged from what's left of my family because I didn't do a good enough job taking care of my brother in their minds. They have no idea what I had to put up with. All my life I had to work to put a roof over both our heads and in return I get shit on. I had to come home to ranting and abuse, and clean up after the laziest (and most arrogant!) person to ever live.
It would seem that the family could serve as a support system but no we're just stuck with the consequences of the sick person's behavior. Stop pretending like this doesn't affect families! All your education and you have zero insight into the family's suffering. Shame on you!

I grew up with schizophrenia, and as I got older and was bullied by my peers and authority figures, I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 13, after becoming suicidal from all of the bullying. It took my whole childhood and early adult years to reach the level of functional I've become now at age 32. And I still can't hold down a job. I can't handle going places for long periods of time. The hallucinations are a constant, and the delusions aren't as prominent as they used to be, but on the days I forget my meds are a whole other story. And depending on the stimuli in the day... That's a huge factor on how I perceive each moment in the day. I am very lucky to have an awesome support group and extremely lucky to be married to the man I am married to. He's an amazing man who understands me in a way no one else has every been able to other than my Mom. When it comes to people misunderstanding what schizophrenia is, my biggest pet peeve pertaining to that mind set is when I tell someone what I am diagnosed and their response being, "But you look fine." I hate that sentence. My second biggest pet peeve is when people think schizophrenia is synonymous with "serial killer" or other dangerous people like that. Yeah, some, when left untreated, can reach that point of mentality, but on the whole, those of use with the diagnosis are more of a danger to ourselves than others. And when someone does, unfortunately, reach that state of mind where they go (for lack of a better term) batshit insane from absolutely no treatment and the hallucinations taking them so far out of reality, rather than people trying to understand what drove the afflicted to that, they get labeled a monster instead. I hate that, too. It isn't easy staying in reality if no one's there to hold your hand. But, most don't seem to care.

My son (22) was diagnosed with schizophrenia a year ago. When he was pre-teen he used to tell me he "saw" things but I discounted it because his mom and I were going through a divorce at the time and I thought it was a need for attention. If I could go back in time, pull my head out of my ass, and listen to him one more time (back then, he's fine now), I would get him the help he needed. As it was years went by before the diagnosis and treatment. Years of his suffering. I don't feel guilty (I don't believe in guilt), but I do feel a deep sense of regret and missed opportunity to help him.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia about 3/4 years ago and was consistently on medication since diagnosis(respieridone 2 years then to Latuda for the 3/4th year) . Now that I no longer have health insurance I have had to take to the knowledge available to me(the internet) and have been trying to find things to do and take to help me. I have been taking Sarcosine and Fish oil. My medication might still be “half lifing” but have not had any debilitating issues(according to my partner) If your channel doesn’t have it already perhaps make a video on the current scientific/medical/neurological understanding of what is happening in the brain with Schizophrenia.

Crazy is also a colloquial term. Crazy can mean that person who is up for anything that is considered fun, even if it's a little daring. Or just an extra goofy person. Crazy can also mean someone who reacts in an out of control manner provoked or unprovoked to things, but usually people, in their lives. In communities that use this term, it usually has nothing to do with mental illness. But saying someone is "a little off" in these same communities usually alludes to us thinking they may have an undisclosed mental illness.

    Hello Kyle & Dr Dom,
    Thankyou for creating this VLOG-
I had Strong Symptoms of Psychosis, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia in the Year 2012.
I was Severely Affected with Visionary, Auditory, Gustatory & Tactile Hallucinations in the year 2012 while I was returning back to my Home Country during my Travel. I was Escorted by my Colleague during my Travel due to the above Symptoms.
I got myself Treated through Pyschatrist immediately after I Landed at my Home Country.
I recovered within one Month & was Back to Office working Normal except sometimes affected due to the Side-effects of Antidepressants like Panick Attacks, Strong Hallucinations at Night, Feeling Nervous, Vomiting due to Liver Dysfunction, Drowsiness, Disorganised Thinking & Speech, Stimulated Sexual Thoughts, Infection of Sexual Organ
I was advised an Overdose of Antidepressants by the Pyschatrist (for 3 to 4 months) during Initial Treatment in the year 2012, instead of Explaining me the Causes of my Mental Illness & How to Handle the PTSD after completion of Antidepressants.
I had to quit my Job in the year 2015, because of
    a. Family Issues, Legal Proceedings at our Native Place.
    b. My Father's Whimsical Behaviour due to Legal Proceedings & Family Issues,
c.My Father's worry about me & my Mental Illness.
After this, I started getting Severe Auditory, Hallucinations, Gustatory Hallucination, Visionary Hallucinations & Tactile Hallucinations in the year 2016 to 2017.
    Now I am dealing with
Mild Symptoms of Auditory(Verbal Commentary, Voices of People who aren't physically present, Voices of Unknown People, Gustotary (Smell), Tactile Hallucinations.
The Hallucination is Mild than compared to what I had Experienced in the year 2012, 2016-2017.
My Behaviour is somewhat Similar to what Dr Dom has Explained in the VLOG.
I am on Medications for Nutritional Deficiencies.
I have already taken Treatment for Migrane.
Can you Help me How to Handle this Mild Symptoms of Hallucinations.
Like I said I do have Mild Symptoms of Psychopath & Schizophrenia Bcoz of
    1. My Age & Being a Female ♀️
    2. History of Depression Diagnosed in the Year 2012
3.ACE, Childhood Trauma of Molestation(Abusive & Sexual) caused due to ODD among Kids & ADHD among Elders
    4. I prefer to be at Home
    5. I communicate Very Less due to Temple Stess 💆
    6. I prefer to be less Social, Less Talktive 🤐 & keep my Self Busy with my Activities.
    7. I get Stressed out 😥 at times because I recall my Horrendous & Agressive Behaviour with my Father caused due to Auditory, Gustatory & Tactile Hallucinations
    8. I Feel Ashamed of myself as to why couldn't I Understand my Father & his Behaviour when he was Alive
    9. I behave like Schizophrenic, Self Talking Person at times due to
    - My Retroactive Anger towards the Pyschatrist who advised me Overdose of Antidepressants without Educating me on PTSD
    - My Retroactive Anger towards the Family Members who Misguided me & my Father,
    - The way I was confused by Everyone due to Inadequate Knowledge about Mental Illness during my Initial Treatment in the year 2012, 2016, 2017
    10. I do get Nervous at times because of Financial Crisis since I Lost my Job in the Year 2020 due to Performance Issues caused by
    1. Mild Hallucinations ( Auditory, Tactile, Gustatory (Smell) ) at Work Place
    2. Family Issues or Internal Clashes b/w me & my Family due to my Behaviour Caused by above mentioned points.
My Family & Relatives are not very Educated about Mental Illness in Detail. My Family & the Society where I belong still consider Mental Illness as a "TABOO". I do try to give an explanation about my Schizophrenic, Psychopathic Behaviour, after listening 🎧 to Medcircle however I am still assumed by Everyone that I am affected by ADHD.
I have already hinted about my Mental Health Problems to my Office Colleagues.

I think it’s even misunderstood in the medical community. Over 20 years I built up a roster of a dozen different psych diagnoses before schizophrenia was even considered and it ended up explaining a huge majority of my symptoms and many that I didn’t even realize were symptoms because psychosis is so non-conducive to being explained through language. Like really how do you tell the difference between a delusion and an epiphany?

My son is in Canada in mental hospital since 2013.I moved beck to Bosnia 2 years ago and asked them to move him beck too.
They refuse it because they know I helped him with food in 2018 which hospital team stopped. After long time he called home
4 times. It is long story if you need help I will give you recipe how to make food which will help as it already did three times including my son. In meantime read this. Every disease is fed with own food . Removing their food is not cure ether . You are not feeding it any more and body is coming back to equilibrium or balance. Some food acts as a raiser for intestines and BBB( blood brain barrier) No one can hill anybody wound if you constantly will keep adding salt on it and putting bandage over it. Right instructions are help fool.

      Abstract
We examined Dohan's hypothesis that schizophrenia is associated with the absorption of "exorphins" contained in gluten and casein. In addition, because of the work of Reichelt et al. (Reichelt, K.L., Saelid, G., Lindback, J. and Orbeck, H. (1986) Biological Psychiatry 21:1279-1290) and Rodriguez et al. (Rodriguez, Trav, A.L., Barreiro Marin, R, Galvez, Borrero, I.M., del Olmo Romero-Nieva, F. and Diaz Alvarez, A. (1994) Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease Aug; 182(8): 478-479), we carried out similar studies on a group of children with autism. In both syndromes we found similar patterns of peptide containing peaks (Ninhydrin positive) after molecular screening with Sephadex G-15. Immunoglobulin assay of IgA and IgG against gliadin and casein in serum was done. High titer IgG antibodies to gliadin were found in 87% of autistic and 86% of schizophrenic patients and high titer IgG antibodies to bovine casein were found in 90% of autistic and in 93% of schizophrenic patients. High titer IgA antibodies to gluten or casein were found in 30% of children with autism while in schizophrenic patients 86% had elevated IgA antibodies to gluten and 67% to casein; some normal children and adults have these antibodies but only in trace amounts. When schizophrenic patients were treated with dialysis or a gluten-casein free diet, or both (Cade, R., Wagemaker, H., Privette, R.M., Fregly, M., Rogers, J. and Orlando, J. (1990) Psychiatry: A World Prespective 1: 494-500) peptiduria and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scores fell while abnormal behavior diminished. A gluten-casein free diet was accompanied by improvement in 81% of autistic children within 3 months in most of the behavior categories. Our data provide support for the proposal that many patients with schizophrenia or autism suffer due to absorption of exorphins formed in the intestine from incomplete digestion of gluten and casein.

(this is my standard script i post in most groups as a practical guide for managing mental health issues.)
Symptom of mental health problems: if youre self cutting & self-harming, have anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, severe mood swings, hearing voices.
You will need to resolve this from the following aspects :
      -spiritual
      -emotional/psychological,
      -physical (nutrition/exercise/medication) aspects of this.
Where emotional wounds that have gotten toxic - forgiveness is the most powerful antidote.
1)Spiritual/prayer - Pray(and do fasting) whatever your religion.
It provides tremendous relief and is a powerful combinations.
Fasting weakens the body and strengthens the spirit. People have been practicing this combination for centuries.
2)Emotional - Forgive as many times as you need to, it will remove the toxic emotions from your soul and heal your body as well. You dont need to reconcile (meet/embrace/befriends with the person who hurt you). Praying for the person who you hate or hurt you is an excellent way to get over these emotional wounds.
3)Medication - you will need medication. Change your meds, dosage or doctor if youre not getting the right results.
      4) Physical - you must strive to be physically fit/exercise/sweat as much as possible to flush the toxins from your body. Eat healthy & minimize junk/processed foods as much as possible.
      5) Psychological - learn to actively manage your thoughts & emotions. Continuously indulging in toxic self-pity & despair will impair your decision making - it will make you accept lower standards in relationships/values/morals.
Self indulging your (toxic) emotions will take you on a downward spiral of bad decisions.
You need to exercise quality control over your thoughts and actions. You need to analyse the situation & ask yourself - IS IT REALLY SO? Get some external feedback from a trusted source. How you feel about a situation and the actual reality may be wildly different.
Don’t maintain fixed-in-stone or unrealistic expectations of salary/life/people/jobs/etc - it is like a rock around your neck. It will destroy you. Let go and free your soul from crazy self-imposed standards which are usually unrealistic.
      6) Serve a cause other than yourself - volunteer at least one hour a week helping someone who is less able; help an old person clean their house, visit or call someone who is lonely if you are able you. Once you can do this - it will give your life more meaning and purpose.
      7) Live outside your head - do gardening, exercise, running, work with your hands. Adult colouring books etc. Learn new skills & keep GROWING with new interests and hobbies. Try to read actual books and do not use electronic devices before you go to bed.
Sleep at fixed times & MINIMIZE your social media use.
8.) high nutrition diet - make sure your body is supplied with adequate Vitamins & trace minerals like zinc, magnesium, folic acid , Omege-3 oils & animal fats in your diet (eg Ensure Milk powder by Abbotts Labs, cod liver oil capsules etc).
Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine as much as possible, it disrupts your sleep pattern.
      Avoid sugary & processed foods.
Take vitamin B complex tablets to boost your mental alertness & sharpness and energy levels., **Alcohol, Medication and anti-depressants severely depletes your Vitamin B ( for energy and mental sharpness), Magnesium, Calcium levels. This must be replaced with tablets or food supplements.

My mom 10 years ago was diagnosed with schizophrenia and she stopped taking medication and now she is very very isolated she cannot get a job mostly everyone sees that she hullucinates she tends to laugh alot most of the time for no reason shes even told me she feels like shes 15 years old and she mever wants to spend time with me and my brother or me and my wife she tends to always be by herself and she doesnt seem to shower. She also tends to have very disorganized speech and blurr out random things .Now i tried to talk to her and tell her that she has schizophrenia and that she needs to be on meds or see a therapist and she refuses and says she has absolutely nothing i dont know what to do i wish i can help my mom. And most of my family judge me saying that im going to develop the same thing as her. And let me tell you i have no symptoms of schizophrenia

Medication would really help your mum. From experience please DO NOT use weed. You have a predisposition to develop the disease. Being young, male and a mother with schizophrenia it’s around 25% . Regular weed use will increase the risk hugely. Avoid stress too. My brother was in the same situation as you when he was 19 years , he started using weed. To cut a long story short he did develop schizophrenia while my sister and I didn’t we didn’t use weed. After his life was ruined he killed himself at 45 years train. Research the links yourself.

Sorry for your loss. It’s a terrible illness which seems to affect some worse than others.
I pray your brother is at peace now. 🙏

I have paranoid schizophrenia and I feel intimidated by my Doctor although he is a very nice man and understanding what questions can I ask him and how can I explain my symptoms to him and I fear that he’ll put me into the hospital?

The biggest thing with this is I’m so thankful that we have doctors nowadays that know this a biological genetic illness though I don’t have it I just have depression perhaps bipolar II but I don’t believe I have that even tho it’s been suggested. But maybe because I’ve tried 3 SSRIs and a tricyclic with 6 months of each at high doses, dTMS as well as bilateral ECT with absolutely zero effect, not one iota. The only thing that has ever done anything is my new medicine lamictal. ....i don’t mean this rudely but it really doesn’t matter how much he says or how convincingly he says it there’s always gonna be people that are disgusted with you as a mentally ill person and confused on why you can’t just snap out of it. Because of this I am deeply estranged from my family and don’t have any connection with them, not any single one of them really since my mom died. I’m at my wits end if I could find a way out and stay out of this. and not depend on them, I would just be gone.
I am holding my own hand emotionally through this process which is okay. and even at that level it comes with challenges of seeking help and being able to admit you need help and picking up the phone and dragging yourself out of bed from being magnetized to your bed for weeks. That’s hard let alone I can not imagine how basically how are you just gonna seek help at all if you’re having those hallucinations ..it’s just that would be impossible.

I say the thing about medications because the second most heart destroying thing after ruined relationships is the amount of time wasted trying to get to a point to find anything that works. Years, literally years wasted arguably the best years in life it robs from you

      Hi Michael
Make it possible to drag yourself out n seek help and get well. You will eventually n be positive n try everything possible you can. Face the challenges n take ur medication without fail.
      Take care. 🤗

@@SP-df1nm no he’s called Smug as his life is fricking great. Spoilt from birth, brought up in a privileged home life, never had to endure negativity growing up. Clueless to what other people have to deal with. The one minor issue Smug has is Sociopathic Personality Disorder, which is great as Smug goes through life ignorant of the despair others suffer from and does not give a toss anyway.
