The Volcanic was not the first repeating pistol, but it was an early one of the first in a line of firearms that would develop into the iconic lever action rifles of the American West. Patented in 1854, the Volcanic used a toggle-action lock operated by a finger lever - simply a smaller version of the hand lever used in the later rifles. The Volcanic had a tube magazine beneath its barrel to hold 7 rounds, and fired a conical bullet in which the powder and primer were both contained within the hollow base of the bullet.
The Volcanic never really caught on very well primarily because of its ammunition. The limited powder capacity of the design meant that the cartridge was fairly weak (in the .41 caliber, it pushed a 106gr bullet at about 500-600 fps), and it was not particularly reliable either. The Volcanic Arms Company went bankrupt in 1857, and was bought up by Winchester. Winchester would continue to produce Volcanic pistols for several more years, and in 1860 put into the market the Henry rifle, which used the basic Volcanic mechanism but with the much more potent (although still relatively weak) .44 rimfire cartridge.

Ah yes, my fav pistol to dual wield when I meet any O’driscolls. 👁
or those inbreds to the NW
I generally dual wield a revolver with a pistol, so I can fire way more ammo than I supposed to.
I HATE CABBAGE I dual wield semi autos or mausers and just unload on people
Damn O'Driscolls
And pinkertons
I don’t think rockstar got the memo that this was a weak pistol because this thing outdamages some rifles in red dead 2
I've avoided it simply because revolvers are cooler, but now you makes me feel like I should go get one
In the first game it was awful tho lol
It was weak in the 1st rdr but it can take down an elephant in rdr2 haha
yeah even more with express ammo
@Lokd Dhci played it 8 times. Sorry you feel that way

I think it was so unpopular at the time because everything it could do, could be done better by most contemporary revolvers. still, high points for style and it's influence on future guns.
The problem was that its in the middle ground of revolvers and lever actions, and its not as powerful as either with a longer reload. It could reach ranges further then most revolvers and stay accurate, but lever actions could do it better. And if distance isn't the problem then revolver is a lot easier to maintain and manage then the volc.
Good overall pistol, hell of a great gun to start with maybe during the times, but it tried to fill to many roles i feel.
@@motivepigeon cartridge lever action rifles and cartridge revolvers didn't exist yet when this gun came out. The volcanic wasn't as powerful or accurate as the cap and ball firearms when it came out. It's only selling points where self contained ammo and faster reloads.
Rocket ball ammunition sucks. They probably only put development into the gun.
Fell in love with this pistol playing RDR2. Why the hell hasn’t Henry Repeating Arms put a modern version of this into production???
I know right! It would sell, it is fun to shoot.
I never realized how large this handgun is, this is a unique badass pistol.
Does it come with lumbago?

Good one
It also comes with tuberculosis
No, you gotta buy that separately. Most gun shops sell it, but there’s this guy called Uncle who sells it cheap.
Am I the only one watching un 2020?
Ah, caseless ammo. What is old is new again.
Or rather, concepts that were impractical long ago are, not surprisingly, still impractical today, but might not be in the near-future.
Caseless ammo was the original form of ammo--the difference here is that Volcanic's round has the propellant adhered to the bullet, so you don't have to load them separately. Cased-ammo was such a huge innovation because it allows each round to be loaded and fired as a single, self-contained unit that isn't affected by weather and can be easily stored. Caseless ammo will only become practical when it can achieve those qualities without being significantly more expensive or less reliable.
SaltyWaffles
Exactly.
SaltyWaffles
If mass produced, caseless ammo will be cheaper right now. Its mainly the engineering challenges on the rifle and unavoidable higher fragility of the caseless ammo what makes it unfeastible today and even for the future. In my opinion well never see a mass produced caseless ammo rifle.
DudeNumberOnePlus
Who knows what the future will hold. Combustible, obdurating polymers may be developed to circumvent fragility issues. Bakelite mags would not have cut it. Now Magpul rules the roost.
SaltyWaffles
It's only impractical for small arms,
Soviet/Russian automatic grenade launchers (AGS-17, AGS-30) have been using caseless ammo for some time. Except it's not exactly "caseless", some call it ammo with "fly away case" - instead of small cavity on it's back, or solid brick of propellant (like in German G11), projectile has whole case containing propellant attached to it. So there is no much win on weight, but no need for extraction and ejection either.
Anyway, let's wait and see if LSAT program is just another experiment or will it come to fruition.

***** Have it us 45 lc and eject like a SAA
for the shotgun, make it 410 with a small amount of rifleing
***** Don't believe silly propaganda that is not going to happen. When you reach your goal. Perhaps you could make a modernized version of this.
FlipTheAngryAsian what the fuck are talking about, why and how are you going to put a loading gate on a lever action pistol do you even know what your talking about. Make it eject like a single action army that is so stupid and unnecessarily complicated just put a ejection port on top of the thing ,you know like almost every other lever action firearm in existence
There was a gent that built one in .22 Short.
Were you supposed to work the action with the middle finger of your firing hand or with the other hand? Either way seems very awkward.
Yeah Stefano but regardless it seems awkward af
Flick the gun downwards and raise it back up
Gotta do those gun twirls to cock it lol, like a real gunslinger
I was gonna say the same thing. Thumb cocking a revolver seems way easier.
Especially with the pinkertons after you, trying to bring back good meat to the camp so Pearson doesn't scoff at your offerings.
Youre supposed to use your toes.
Hi, guys. Sorry about such a late remark out of nowhere but there is a book, not cheap if you can find it, called "History of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company: 1866-1981". It contains, as sort of a prologue, just about everything ever known about the "rocket ball" the Volcanic and Volition repeaters, and the relationships between just about all the great names of the day. The bad news is that I no longer have my copy. The good news is that most of what is in it has been cited or quoted or corroborated by available public sources. And, though it's been a while since I refreshed my memory, I think I have this straight.
Most descriptions of the rocket ball ammo merely mention a "cap" and a "powder charge". This is misleading to a modern shooter to imply something like a modern "cartridge without a case" with the bullet holding some powder and the base that caps the bullet being something like the base of a modern case with a percussion cap in it. The cap that the quick descriptions mention was made of cork or press board or waxed felt. It merely held the charge in the bullet's cavity and had a small hole to allow the tip of the firing pin to directly impact the propellant.
The second thing that throws off modern shooters is the reference to a "powder charge". The propellant used was, IIRC, mercury fulminate. It's still used in small quantities but it's too powerful, unstable, and generally nasty to be used to power anything like a bullet even to black powder pressures and velocities. Rather than thinking of a rocket ball as a "weak cartridge without a case" it would be more accurate to say that it was a "dangerously hot squib load". It merely used a large, and dangerous in many ways, primer load and the hollow base of a bullet to replace the black powder and do away with the need for a case.
Anyway. sorry for being late to the party and then rambling on but I hope I've held your interest.
Cheers!
That was interesting. I learned something. Thank you

so the cartridge sits on the lifter by gravity? does that mean you can't cycle it say upside down or by twirling it like the terminator?
I don't think so. The cartridge would be held by the lifters wrapped around it not sitting on top of them. See how at about 1:14 the bolt travels forward underneath the black bits? That only makes sense if that's where the cartridge is. Otherwise it would be pushing nothing into the chamber.
Love how it looks
That's a nice looking gun. Bit disappointed that it doesn't fire balls of molten lava but never mind, it's a cool thing
The one thing I don't quite understand is the primer system for the ammo. For example on a needle gun the primer was placed in the middle of the paper cartridge so the primer was expended as well. On the volcanic's ammo it appears that the primer is at the rear of the cartridge, which would keep the remains of the primer in the pistol.
The primers were blown clear of the barrel when fired, despite being on the outside of the projectiles.
Forgotten Weapons I would not have thought that would happen reliably enough to count on.
Modern caseless ammo does reliably fragment and spit out the primer. The reason caseless isn't used much today is because it's hard to make the exposed charge sturdy enough. I'd think that with modern propellants and and having the bullet jacket stick with the bullet it should be possible to make good rocket ball ammo.
Given that a colt 1840s-50s percussion revolver doesn't reliably fire because the primer sticks in the mechanism, this problem isn't unique to caseless.
I really want somebody to start making reproductions in .22lr if you shrink down a .44 magnum lever action rifle to pistol sized there's a .22lr volcanic.

Video about a forgotten weapon in 2014, which is now iconic in 2021.
What I don't understand about the idea behind volcanic is the need for the lever. It seems clunky on a pistol and requires the use of both hands. Why didn't they make a mechanism that chambers the cartridge together with the pull of the hammer?
Martin Kincl sooo a revolver? I see what your saying but I think it's due to the fact that they were trying to be innovative and make something new, you never know if your product will be the next best thing unless you put it on the market.

Rockstar: I'm gonna stop you right there.
i've always wondered if you were intended to work the lever with one of your fingers from a shooting grip. is the action too stiff or the throw too long to do that?
It feels awkward, but I think with some practice it could be cycled pretty well with the middle finger.
Maybe your supposed to hold the pistol with both hands like a rifle and work the lever with the firing hand, since there's no gas escaping like from a revolver.
@@nickstav08
Depends i'd say, if you're hipfiring it or aiming it.
You could keep your other hand over or behind the pistol hipfiring to lever it easily.
Aiming it at eye level would probably be harder to lever as you're more restricted to one hand.
@@Skankhunt-sc7th true though i found a video of a guy firing it and working the gun like a lever action rifle, id imagine due to the pistols length and short action re-chambering a round would be more difficult one handed. ruclips.net/video/0Dn9YK8HfH4/видео.html
Original design may have been planned to be a carbine, considering that horseback gunnery was consider pretty normal, but they may had changed the design to suit what they thought was a more suitable market.
O'driscolls :*sweating*
Wondering about re-cocking technique on the Volcanic, mostly based on playing with a non-firing replica I've had sitting around for years (I wrote a graphic novel titled DEMON GUN about 20 years ago--hero used a modified Volcanic). Might be less effortful to thumb-cock the hammer and use the lever simply to rechamber the cartridge? That would make the lever action a lot lighter. Just wondering...
