    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
Ammunition for the Volcanic Repeaters is extremely rare today, and this opportunity to take a look at a complete original box of it was something I did not want to miss. There were two calibers made; the .31 (Cartridge No.1) and the .41 (Cartridge No.2). Both were sold in tin boxes of 200 rounds, originally costing $10/thousand for the .31 and $12/thousand for the .41. The ammunition was made by Crittenden & Tibbals of South Coventry - a company which would eventually become Union Metallic Cartridge (UMC) and is still in business today. The ballistics of the No.2 we are looking at today were a 6.5 grain charge of black powder propelling a 100 grain projectile at about 260 feet/second. In other works, exceedingly underpowered even for its day. However, it was a waterproof, self-contained cartridge before the metallic cartridge case was refined enough to work reliably, and that was worth a lot.

Reminds me, when one of my not-immediate relatives passed on some years ago, I got ahold of some of their old firearms equipment. No guns, but some antique ammo. Pulling the (very loose) bullet on one, I found the propellant inside was not the usual black or smokeless powder grains I expected, but a number of small sticks, nearly as long as the interior of the case (minus the space taken up by the bullet), and which looked for all the world like bits of dried spaghetti. I was a teen at the time, and hadn't heard of Cordite yet, so that was an interesting educational experience. Unfortunately, it all ended up disappearing in a move a few years after that, so I don't have it anymore to get any pictures of.

For another missed investment opportunity regarding the volcanic firearms - I saw a post of a printed page out of a Winchester history book. Apparently, about 50ish years after Winchester acquired all of the Volcanic inventory, someone found a bunch of the rifles still in shipping crates in a warehouse, including a box of ammo in each crate. They were just going to be destroyed, but someone in management had a bright idea - They stacked the crates at the entrance to the factory, placed a guard to collect, and offered them to employees as a souvenir - for the hefty price of 25 cents. For the entire crate, firearm, and ammo....

It was missing the follower, follower spring, the collar that holds the swiveling piece for loading at the end of the barrel, and the sight and screw for locking it down. With nothing to go by but some photos, I had to make them all by hand. Took quite a bit of time, but as the firearm was serial number 296, I believe it was first year production, and worth roughly 12-15,000, it was well worth the effort! The customer was ecstatic with the results, considering he had been hauling it around in it's "broken" condition for over 50 years. He acquired it from his uncle who, won it in a card game! Nothing wrong with liking terrible weapons. I bought a Hi Point over a year ago just to raise cringe reactions when people see it at the range, and the thing is, be it a Volcanic or whatever gun it may be - bad guns are just as relevant as good guns, and deserve recognition for better or worse. I'd really love a semi auto L85A1 one day, if I could find one. An awful gun, yes, but that's the point. Either way, you got to admit, in the 1850s, you would have been sold at "VOLCANIC", "ROCKET BALL", and "CASELESS". It must have sounded like such a cool gun, and still does today, even if it was optimistic garbage in reality. There's people out there to appreciate any gun, good or bad, and more power to you for enjoying terrible weapons, because not enough people do.

Someone made a .22 that had a ceaseless powdered charge. It would be fired on what resembled a spring air rifle. When the compressed air heated up, it would ignite the powder charge in the same manner that using too much of the wrong oil in a break-barrel air rifle would cause a detonation.
What would be an interesting project would be to design a Volcanic style pistol but instead of six grains of black powder, use six grains of Hercules Unique smokeless powder. If you can get the breech to seal, you might get 600 feet per second.

Still, I’d take a ‘51 navy or a ‘60 army any day over this. A heavy jacket could stop it, especially when you’re talking about a wool coat, a waistcoat, a shirt, and undergarments that it has to go through just to touch skin. I think that box only has 182 bullets. The ammo is arranged in 7 double rows, and two bullets deep; left row has 7 bullets and the right has 6 for a total of 13 per double row. Multiply that by 14 and you get 182.

This low power ammunition would be perfect for indoor shooting ranges they had in saloons back in the day. Multiple shots so customers wouldn’t have to wait to reload every shot and no need of a tough backstop.

This sounds like a fun gun to shoot. I always like watching the rounds arc in to the target, and with this thing i could do that on a pistol range.

I have an inline muzzleloader that's primed by a 209 shotshell primer. The rifle is .58 cal, but if I load it with a .36 cal round ball rapted with Al foil and just use the 209 primers the projectile travels at 400+ fps out of the 20-inch barrel. all you hear is a pop.

That's about the speed of a paintball gun... And you can clearly see those projectiles in air.
