In the US, it is illegal to discriminate against a candidate on the basis of age, but in India every government exam and every government job comes with an age limit.
Very informative video Prof. Never thought age could also be seen as a parameter of discrimination. Sometimes you never think of something as wrong, because you're just so used to it. Happy that this video starts a dicussion in the community. IMO, if the US and UK, are having a bias for younger people, they should learn not to have one, rather than thinking that they will become less wrong if they officially state an age limit. I think we first need to establish on very rational grounds and doing full justice to the future of education, whether age plays a dominant role or not.
The 35-year age limit is inhumane. One can easily miss this deadline if one focuses on starting a family and earning money for survival through a job, and one will never be able to enter academics.
Thank you for a balanced discussion on the topic. One drawback of putting an explicit age limit is that it puts huge pressure on (and selects for) candidates who meticulously planned their future and played it safe by taking projects that would give good enough publications in defined periods. This leaves little room for mavericks and people whose interests evolved over time after they worked in a totally different field. Having worked in Europe and the US for the last 2 decades, I have come across many cases where the path to being a faculty at a research institute or a university came from their curiosity. For example, an MD who practiced medicine for several years and then decided to undertake basic research to understand the mechanism of disease progression in his patients and finally applied for a faculty role at the ripe old (or young) age of 47. Or the neurobiologist who was my thesis committee member but started his professional career as a horticulturist. Being a researcher is a creative pursuit but nurturing creativity and following your curiosity seems a risky proposition with implicit or explicit age limits on faculty recruitment.
The retirement age at IITs just went up to 65 from 60 a few years back. If the "shelf-life" argument holds any merit, why not relax the age limit to 40 then? Or 38 at least?
Absolutely. As I mentioned during the video ... when we try to justify the age limit we are going into very nebulous territory. Every argument that I can put forward, I can myself put forward counterarguments. I seriously think that the "PhD age" route is better where the eligibility only mentions that not more than so many years must have passed from the PhD completion.
@@Prof_JC Dear Prof. JC, What about candidates who took 7-9 years to complete their PhD because their PhD guide did not grant the degree? I, for instance, enrolled in a PhD program at an IIT at the age of 23. My guide allowed me to submit my thesis after nine years. Now, after 3 years of postdoc, I am 36. What is my fault? Why do IITs discriminate based on age? Why don't IITs impose a rule on their professors to award degrees within five years? Who is responsible for ruining my entire life?

Every PhD journey ... every student's career trajectory is unique. So, take a little heart. Please note that there may be some institutes where there are no age limits (I think UGC does not explicitly mention anything like that ... but please confirm this information from a proper source). I don't know whether you are from science or the humanities. If you are from science, there is the possibility of industrial jobs which can lead to a very fulfilling career.

Discrimination on the basis of age is the worst thing happening in India.. I am UGC NET in Hindustani classical vocal... The UGC website says, there is no upper age limit for an assistant professor... I cleared NET at the age of 32 years... I went through a deep financial crisis.. I had to take up jobs in the IT support for about 5 years.. Then i went for an interview in MP... Just one post and 10,000 people for the interview.. As a woman i completely agree with your point. For a woman, qualifying for professional exams after marriage is 😢😢just unimaginable.. I did it because of my husband's support...after corona, we lost 2-3 years of age gap... But the UGC has yet not done anything about the upper age limit...i take private classes fpr young men and women aged 27 who cannot comprehend what i can at the age of 44 !!!!! This shows that age has nothing to do with comprehension and analytical abilities!!!!
Sir, I m genuinely interested in pursuing PhD in IIT.I have an age gap of 3-4 years after completing my Master as I was busy preparing for Government job. Sir, will age gap matter if a candidate want to pursue phd in IIT? Will IIT Committee select a candidate who is repeatedly reapplying for PhD admission at IIT for the 6th times consecutively if he or she secures good rank in GATE exam?Sir, could u please tell what improvement is required from the candidate end in order to get admission in IIT for PhD after getting repeated multiple failures in IIT PhD entrance interviews? Which is a soft age limit for assistant profs in IITs and NITs. Think wisely before u decide. I am a PhD student in 3rd year at IIT Bombay. All the Best!
Now (under NEP) there are options to get into a PhD program directly after a four-year UG (all UG programs have a 4-year honors track). So that would mean a person can complete a PhD at around the age of 26-27. That gives ample time to do two PDFs and come back as a faculty by 30-31.

When I joined IIT Kharagpur, another prof from IIT Patna joined IIT Kharagpur at the Assistant Prof level. At that time he was more than 35 years old as he had already been at IIT Patna for about 5 years. So, yes, I think depending on the merits of the case, it will be considered.
THANKs a lot Sir for putting out your points on this topic. I also agree it's better to go with PhD age rather than biological age and for retirement I think it should totally be left to the professor after 60 you can retire anytime. Sir, if possible shed some light on PhD life after 5 years as there is no stipend. How is a student expected to continue without stipend? Not everyone is financially strong to continue. What should a student do then? I have seen a lot of students taking around 9-10 years to complete a PhD.
Usually, after PhD, people go for postdoc if they wish to get into an academic job, meaning that after the postdoc they start applying for faculty positions. Postdocs get a reasonable salary. Or, after PhD, people can go for an industrial job, where the pay is really very good, and it can also lead to a fulfilling career.
We are doing Ph. D only to continue in service even after retirement like extensions or placements in some Pvt colleges.... This is ridiculous but true.... Only 0.1 percentage reach to IITs. so my view stands true that we are only going towards need based system...
Sorry, I did not understand your comment. Did you mean in some colleges people do PhD so that they can get some extra benefits in their jobs? I know it counts a lot towards promotion. But did you mean something else?
@@Prof_JC yes.... In a proper way universities or engg colleges should work for knowledge based system.... Ph.D enhances knowledge.... But because of various reasons you discussed where it is going to end up... Teaching professions are vacant and not filling at govt level and largely are on contract basis...
I am extremely frustrated by the academics...what should I do, sir? I am a graduate student in physics and I am not willing to pursue my a PhD. I have a question , What if somebody has done Ph.D. in interdisciplinary areas? In which subject he/she can get a job as an assistant professor? (e.g. If I pursue my Ph.D. in Geophysics/ computational biology/ Environmental studies, for what subjects I can apply for an assistant professor job?) If someone has done BSc in Physics and MSc-PhD in environmental studies, can he/she get an assistant professor job? If so, in which subject (Physics/Environmental studies ) ?
There is no straightforward answer. In certain places, where a lot of emphasis is placed on undergraduate teaching, one of the biggest points that is looked into is the undergraduate training that the candidate himself went through. If he is from Physics then it stands to good reason that he shall be able to contribute concretely to the the undergraduate teaching in Physics. Usually interdisciplinary programmes like environmental sciences do not have undergraduate students enrolled in them. So, it may be possible to apply to them purely on the basis of your research experience.
Age is a bullshit. India is restricting possibilities by putting age on the phd candidates. I find that the professors in many iits like IIT Kanpur don't give Ph.D. before 7-8 years. And then, there is the age limit. It is as if they are playing an internal joke with the lives of the candidates. Respect quality more than quantity. In India, in many NITs also, you will find professors who are literally underperforming when it comes to research. Many are just holding the professor's chair just to show their pride. Why do we not change that and put better quality people instead? Maybe, India will never be able to come out of their conservative mindset and think something for the greater good of the country.
I think this unconscious bias of US institutions is not that big of an issue if I compare that with ineligibility of being below 35 in IITs. We can't compare these.
Thanks a lot, sir 😀. I was stuck and was seeking such advice. You bring me clarity, which will help me to make the right decision in life. Currently, I have been working as a technologist at Tata Steel for more than two years. My age is 28 years, and I have got offers from Washington State and Ohio State University for a PhD. My future goal is to become an assistant professor either at IIT or NIT or join national labs as a researcher or industrial R&D in India. As a general candidate, the first option to be an assistant professor is gone away (35 years age limit). I have been following employment news for more than 1 year, and I have seen there are very few opportunities (
If you start your PhD at 28, it is possible to complete it by age 32 or 33. Then you will still have time to go for a postdoc and while doing the postdoc you can apply for position of Assistant Professor. So why did you think that this option has gone away? The timeline is a bit tight for you, but I think it is possible.
It seems like India does not value experienced/ well qualified person Atleast there must be age relaxation/preference based on well suitable candidates so that his/her experience can be used, other it seems like We do not know the difference between dailly wagers and skillers. This is why we are more bookish ,less/no practical Sir one think in India specially in science We first read theory after that we do practical ,in my opion it is wrong way of teaching intead we should first do practical after that we should do theory.
👏 Please make another video on the "TENURE TRACK" system of Faculty appointments which has been introduced in (some?) IITs/ IISc/ IIMs since the last 4 or 5 years, covering these and other points: - i) What is Tenure track? Why do universities introduce it? How is it supposed to work, and how does it really work!! - ii) Why is tenuring important for improving and maintaining academic standards? How does it compare with other systems of improving and maintaining academic standards, such as tracking citations, institutional rankings, accreditations? - iii) How does Tenure track system introduced in Indian Institutes compare with Tenuring systems in countries with 'developed' higher education systems, especially USA? - iv) How can Tenure track system be introduced in other universities (other than IITs/ IISc/ IIMs) - both in centrally funded and state government funded universities. And in private universities? - v) What 'changes would introducing a Tenure track system in an Institute/ university entail? What 'challenges' are involved in its implementation (in the context of India and USA) ?
Thank you for the very concrete suggestion. But right now I don't have the full set of information to be able to make a proper video on it. But it is a very good idea. Let me think about it.
Thanks for the acknowledgement... A video on tenure track systems and tenuring would be a timely and important topic for many PhD students and UG/ PG students who are contemplating an academic career... Many faculty members may benefit too. With (some?) IITs and IIMs having already introduced a tenure track faculty selection and confirmation system since 2019 (?), with IISc strengthening its tenuring process a couple of years ago (as per a media interview with the IISc Director), and with the emphasis in NEP* on internationalization and adapting international best practices, PhD students and those contemplating an academic career need to be better aware of what tenure track and tenuring means and how it works. Unfortunately many prospective faculty based in India, including those on the verge of completing their PhD from Institutions of Eminence and National Importance, are not clear what tenure track and tenuring really means... Or it is (mistakenly) considered to be an extended version of a "probation" period in a 'sarkari naukri' (viz. confirmation in a regular position is assured unless the candidate is a slacker or deviant !!) A video from an academician based in an IIT would help to open the "black box" of this mysterious new system which has been introduced recently in some of the premier Institutes in India (~ and as per grapevine is proposed to be established soon in some other universities in India). Look forward to watching a video about tenure track and tenuring systems on this excellent channel soon... * NEP (National Education Policy 2020)
Net-net academia is a very narrow-minded place. The people are too semantic and divide themselves and others into too many classes. This is entirely meaningless. Moreover, academic jobs may give satisfaction but they do not give you money. At 40+ too you are busy in writing research grants and begging all around. Instead learn and build something and take it to the market. Why bother about such a sick place...

Sir if you already have 4 to 5 years of teaching experience is this age limit relaxed in IITs??
When I joined IIT Kharagpur, another prof from IIT Patna joined IIT Kharagpur at the Assistant Prof level. At that time he was more than 35 years old as he had already been at IIT Patna for about 5 years. So, yes, I think depending on the merits of the case, it will be considered.
@@jcLectures Sir thank you so much for the quick reply.
As a child, in the media I only used to see professors as old people over 50. So I never thought that there is age limit in academia.
Exactly
Instead of age limit restrictions, it would be better if Industrial experience of about 2 yrs min. is made mandatory for faculty positions.
Sir is it possible to join phd after btech? Because criteria is only phd only for assistant professor post?
Age limit restrictions brought by British to restrict IAS officers from India.
Thank you so much for the valuable information.
Glad you liked it!
I have a question ,
What if somebody has done Ph.D. in interdisciplinary areas? In which subject he/she can get a job as an assistant professor? (e.g. If I pursue my Ph.D. in Geophysics/ computational biology/ Environmental studies, for what subjects I can apply for an assistant professor job?)
If someone has done BSc in Physics and MSc-PhD in environmental studies, can he/she get an assistant professor job? If so, in which subject (Physics/Environmental studies ) ?
There is no straightforward answer. In certain places, where a lot of emphasis is placed on undergraduate teaching, one of the biggest points that is looked into is the undergraduate training that the candidate himself went through. If he is from Physics then it stands to good reason that he shall be able to contribute concretely to the the undergraduate teaching in Physics. Usually interdisciplinary programmes like environmental sciences do not have undergraduate students enrolled in them. So, it may be possible to apply to them purely on the basis of your research experience.
Sir is it right to do phd at the age of 36
Age is a bullshit.
South korea china Austria has 35 age limit
@@Prof_JC Thanks a lot sir. This is very helpful.
There is an age limit of 35 years (GN) for Asst Prof in IITs. Please keep in mind
age limit should not be there in my opinion. i guess they did so because any how they have to scrutiny many aplication
It seems like India does not value experienced/ well qualified person
Atleast there must be age relaxation/preference based on well suitable candidates so that his/her experience can be used, other it seems like We do not know the difference between dailly wagers and skillers. This is why we are more bookish ,less/no practical
Sir one think in India specially in science
We first read theory after that we do practical ,in my opion it is wrong way of teaching intead we should first do practical after that we should do theory.
👏
Please make another video on the "TENURE TRACK" system of Faculty appointments which has been introduced in (some?) IITs/ IISc/ IIMs since the last 4 or 5 years, covering these and other points:
- i) What is Tenure track?
Or it is (mistakenly) considered to be an extended version of a "probation" period in a 'sarkari naukri' (viz. confirmation in a regular position is assured unless the candidate is a slacker or deviant !!)
A video from an academician based in an IIT would help to open the "black box" of this mysterious new system which has been introduced recently in some of the premier Institutes in India (~ and as per grapevine is proposed to be established soon in some other universities in India).
Look forward to watching a video about tenure track and tenuring systems on this excellent channel soon...

Hi Sir.... Can you make video about the pay scale of faculty in IIT's and other central universities
Too much population in India. So, this is the way to select and remove candidates.
You are discouraging.....so bleak
