    A very informative video Professor.
    Certainly, there seem to be some potential shortcomings in the current Assistant Professor recruitment process at NITs. One notable concern is the requirement for Ph.D. candidates to excel in the comprehensive GATE-patterned written test, which can be challenging for individuals who have been immersed in specialized research for several years. Additionally, the reliance on recommendations from supervisors and other faculty members can create a bottleneck, especially when there are only a few positions available, including both General and Quota categories.
    Given the limited number of vacancies and the high unemployment rate among Ph.D. graduates, this system may inadvertently result in many qualified candidates being overlooked. Moreover, the preference for foreign graduates and postdoctoral researchers in IITs suggests that a Ph.D. alone might not be sufficient to secure these positions. This situation raises questions about the alignment of academic qualifications with available opportunities and the need for potential reforms in the recruitment process to address these challenges.

    • @Drganguli
      @Drganguli  Год назад

      Yes the recruitment process of academics is always being debated among the professors and administration. They have to balance teaching and research excellence and also find indications of demonstrated expertise. Since many people apply for an open position, things get competitive and postdoctoral requirements, rank of university of PhD and postdoc, level of references and quality of papers all are used to reduce the number of candidates to a smaller set before interviews etc.

      Well, you need to take care of your health issues. To the best of my knowledge, one has to go through a medical checkup when joining the institutions. But you need to check with the current rules on that with any institution you apply in. Health is very important and you should take medical advice from a professional about what to do when going forward in life.

    • @Drganguli

      It depends on the selection committee, the current administration and directors of the institutes and the publication record, area of research, communication skills, and references of the applicant. These decisions involve many variables and the institutes rarely get an “optimal” candidate. Also, a good postdoc or a few good papers in good journals can improve the chances of any applicant.

      Well if you do well in ms and PhD and have good quality journal papers plus some postdoc experience then you have a chance at the assistant professor job at iit. Sir, the area of specialization mentioned in the advertisement should necessarily match, then only I can apply? Can a theoretical physicist apply against a experimental position and still be considered if the committee decides?

    • @Drganguli
      @Drganguli  7 месяцев назад

      A match is desirable as the department has given much thought to this problem before giving the advertisement. Similar areas may be ok but experimental and theoretical may be too far apart. But this is my opinion there may always be some exceptional case where it may vary as the CV was so good that the search itself shifted. But that is rare.

      If you are shortlisted the interview will the department professors is first set up online on Skype or zoom or team. You need to make a presentation of the PhD research and after that you and are asked some questions. Further interviews with official committees can also be done online. This is generally true for iisc and iit but each place can set its own rules. At nit they may have different policies.
