It will generally be mentioned in the advertisement if they have an age limit issue. In some cases they will relax this also. Some ads don’t mention this at all

It depends on the selection committee, the current administration and directors of the institutes and the publication record, area of research, communication skills, and references of the applicant. These decisions involve many variables and the institutes rarely get an “optimal” candidate. Also, a good postdoc or a few good papers in good journals can improve the chances of any applicant.

No, but it is beneficial if you have a degree from IIT be it bachelors, masters or PhD. Degrees from iisc and good foreign universities as well as places like Jadavpur and NIT or IIIT are also good. Yes you can certainly do that. There are some people who get jobs particularly at IIT without any postdoc. They may be interested in the research area to fill a gap in the department and the courses a candidate can teach.

Sometimes students become project assistants and help in sponsored research projects. They get paid for that.
