I'm probably not the only one to mention this, but he actually DID make a cameo appearance decades later, in DC's Super Friends #5 back in 1977 (but just as his comedian alter ego, Larry Davis). It's and odd thing to know (though I did have to look up the exact # and year), but back then I happen to get one of the Funnyman comics at a yard sale the same week as I bought that Superfriends and saw that connection instantly and have been a fan of his since. (I even read that he made a cameo as Funnyman on last time in Crisis in Infinite Earths, but never spotted him). This was a great trip down memory lane, thanks.
Yeah, it's a shame he never took off. It seems funny heroes rarely seem to find a place in pop culture, unless they're violent antiheroes of some sort - and don't get me wrong, I like those, but it would be refreshing to have a genuine funny hero again - there really aren't that many of them. Perhaps one way of making him work would be to play him more like a combination of Batman and modern-day Plastic Man. Like Plastic Man, he's a total cartoony goofball in a more realistic world, but like Batman, he IS just a regular guy and he can, in fact, be hurt. The way I'd play it is, he knows this, and, like Spider-Man, manages to keep crooks so infuriated by his pranks and mockery that they keep making stupid mistakes which work in his favor - which, of course, only adds to the comedy. Every now and then, though, he does get hurt, but he treats THAT as a joke, too - like, 'ha ha, joke's on me, I got cocky'. Someone who, like the Joker, sees life in general as a joke, but manages to interpret it in a positive, as opposed to a tragic and sanity-wrecking, way - that would be an interesting way to use Funnyman.
@@JosephFlores-yn4yi True, but I wouldn't call him an inherently comedic character; he's more of a serious character with a trademark sense of humor. If I wanted to make an "archenemy" for Funnyman I would make one that is a very serious guy on the surface but deep down finds pleasure in crushing others, wether spiritually or physically. Perhaps a crime lord that Funnyman made a fool of too often and pushed him over the edge into outright supervillainy, or a former solider who turned to crime after leaving the military. Both could have themes of oppression, lack of hope, and joylessness in order to be foils to the comical Funnyman, someone who is terrifying to face and instills a feeling of hopelessness in his opponents.

Love the new introduction for forgotten heroes! And I love the concept of funnyman. I have been thinking about a superhero who looks like a clown and funny man fits the description perfectly. Honestly, I think funnyman should be brought back and updated. Keep him funny, but make him more modern. Some one need to do a story where funny man the clown and the Heckler team up with the jester and be come the comedy club of justice they could fight the weeper and the mud pack on a One shot story called why so serious.
Funnyman could come back, I feel, in a one shot miniseries, in a world akin to 1984 or Hunger Games. His bizarre, absurd, humor-based crimefighting would really be well suited for a setting in one of those joyless, bloodless/humorless idiosyncrasy dystopias so popular today; a man pushed too far into introversion and toeing the line who snaps and decides to fight order with chaos.
You have improved your presentation and I like that. If you want a forgotten super hero, I say go with the face (or maybe he was called the mask), a crime fighter who wore a grotesque green mask. I actually found out about him in a Spongebob magazine.
I remember finding one under similar circumstances. The character was Madame Fatal. The whole gimmick was that Fatal was an actor whose daughter was kidnapped so he went out in drag to fight crime: particularly as a kindly old lady. What's even stranger is that the character would eventually reappear in a DC Shade story that answered what happened to his daughter. Imagine this as a Taken movie...
Damn... I just hope he gets a second chance on the spotlight one day, I REAAAAALLY like the idea of the character and given the right writer it could be something great. Personally I think a serious take on the character is possible, I mean look at the Joker, if you can do that with him you can with Funny Man (without sucking away all the light and fun of him).

I was just about to mention Slapstick! I think that what made him work was that he was made with the intention of subverting the typical superhero tropes and expectations and working with the iconography that superhero comics have; while Funnyman was more of a "last hurrah" because his creators felt superhero comics would fade.

If you ever have the chance of doing a superhero team for this series, then I would recommend DC's Section Eight. But I would say they're more obscure than forgotten though.
Trying to retool a super-hero with a traditionally comedic hook to him never works out. BRAVE AND THE BOLD, after it became a Batman team-up book during the '70s a la Spider-Man in MARVEL TEAM-UP, had a handful of stories where Plastic Man turns up and is written completely seriously. Excessively so, in fact, with Plas having become a homeless derelict in his first appearance, having become depressed at being a freak no one takes seriously. You get the feeling the writer had been ordered to use the character and this was his revenge.
I would have loved to see Funny Man get a revamp. Not a reboot. Have his older comics still remain canon and just try to add on or continue with it. Maybe have him prefer to use non lethal means to stop criminals because he is a pacifist or something. Maybe have a meta expanded backstory. Maybe he did try to go more dark and gritty route, but found that he hated it because it wasn't who he really was. So he prefers to be a fun in the sun hero. Saying that world could use more laughs rather than grim dark. Hell, have him face the Joker and actually get serious. Maybe he could team up with Batman or Superman. He even gets pushed to the end and almost kills the Joker due to some dumb luck. He has the Joker right where he wants him. Batman tries to step in to stop Funny Man, but Funny Man shows he will not kill and instead captures Joker by making him laugh. Thus giving Batman enough time to capture the Joker. I would have Funny Man have a speech about how it takes great courage to keep smiling and try to make the world laugh in dark times.
I kinda think I have heard of him. But just heard of him. As to the chaecter. He has appeal (banana) , and from what I see his adventures have real punch (lines). Still this is really more along the lines of a b list character. Not the first one you grab off the shelves, but if you have some spare cash sure.
the next forgotten hero i want you to talk about is Bozo the Iron Man a charather from Quality Comics that later on went Defunct and got all it charathers own by DC and Bozo was one of them the character had few cameo appearances in DC comics and hadn't made a proper comeback at all
OOOH, new title card/opening for this series! Cool! :D Hello, Dick Tracy and...guy with a cross on his chest who I know but have embarrassingly forgotten the name of...CURSE YOU, PROFESSOR MEMORY; YOU LIED TO ME! Also: "He simply couldn't sanction Funnyman's Buffoonery." ...Hello, reference. I won't say to what, *but I knoooow...* Anyway, believe it or not, I actually know this series. It's a long story as to how I discovered these comics and read them (I sadly do not actually OWN any copies, I'll tell you right now), but like you, I kind of like him, and kind of don't. The best way I can describe it is that I like Funnyman himself (and I even like June), but the actual stories this short series had were never THAT good, and the villains...well...basically what you said. (Though I personally feel that Doc Gimmick and Slippery Slim DID have potential, it was just never reached.) HOWEVER, to be fair, most superheroes DO take a while to gather major villains who work, or even find their proper footing. It's all a matter of what the public wants, I think, often mixed with how fast the creators can churn out and develop things. And, like you suggested, I think it's that Siegel and Shuster were ahead of their time with this guy. He feels like an early version of Freakazoid or the Tick; a superhero parody based around screwball shenanigans rather than a "real" hero. Those are of course just as popular today as Batman and Superman, but back then perhaps the public just didn't want that. If Funnyman had gone on, perhaps he could have found an audience, and perhaps he could have gathered REAL villains who might have become popular figures in their own right, but I suppose we'll never know.
That's actually not Tracy, it's Doctor Occult - another Siegel and Shuster creation. The guy with the cross is Baron Blietzkrieg, an earth 2 nazi villain; now that I think of it, maybe it wasn't so smart plastering a guy with swastikas all over my video, in this PC age... Channels have probably been taken down for less ;) Maybe I ought to trade him out for another villain - or maybe I'm being paranoid here? :P And yes, you may have a point there about the villains, after all it took Batman almost a year to get some truly great rogues.
@@mr.rogues4145 I've actually heard of Doctor Occult; I didn't notice the medallion in his hand, so I immediately presumed it was Tracy. My bad. :P And thank you for reminding me of Blitzkrieg. I knew the character, though not very well, but I couldn't for the life of me recall the name.
The grandfather of Ambush Bug, Freakazoid and Deadpool.

If you ever have the chance of doing a superhero team for this series, then I would recommend DC's Section Eight. But I would say they're more obscure than forgotten though.
I'll check em out!
He should appear in DC
That ended ubrubtly.
id love to see a darker take of this in a comics event
Trying to retool a super-hero with a traditionally comedic hook to him never works out. BRAVE AND THE BOLD, after it became a Batman team-up book during the '70s a la Spider-Man in MARVEL TEAM-UP, had a handful of stories where Plastic Man turns up and is written completely seriously. Excessively so, in fact, with Plas having become a homeless derelict in his first appearance, having become depressed at being a freak no one takes seriously. You get the feeling the writer had been ordered to use the character and this was his revenge.
Nice intro, assuming the villains intro will be unchanged? Though I wouldn't mind if I did.
It'll be the same as this one, I think.
I forget her name, but wasn't there a spider themed superheroine that predates Spider-Man?
Slapstick's secret origin!
Hola. Buen video. Lamentablemente el enlace para ver los funnyman esta caído 😞
Alan Moore or Grant Morrison, should do a re-tell story of this guy
Nope, the person that made Deadpool should do that instead.
How about the history of the Mighty Crusaders.
Funnyman looks like Archie Andrews
I'd like to see this guy should fight Joker.
Considering Joker loves grumpy ol Batsie, I wonder what he'd think of this guy - love or hate?
I kinda think I have heard of him. But just heard of him. As to the chaecter. He has appeal (banana) , and from what I see his adventures have real punch (lines). Still this is really more along the lines of a b list character. Not the first one you grab off the shelves, but if you have some spare cash sure.
Joker vs Funnyman: Who will win?
So, this is the Batman Who Laughs...
I hav a idea for a episode. The golden age superhero # 711 from Quality Comics
Do Helena Wayne as forgotten heroes.
The brute was a caveman hero in atlas comics
cowboy kent rollins
Empire city ehhh??? Guess this was before the Beast nuked it.
I'm kinda surprised that DC didn't make their own take on this character yet...since it is in public domain...
Funnyman vs Superman!
@@mr.rogues4145 Funnyman V Superman!
Can u do pre crisis blackwing Charles Bullock earth 2
the next forgotten hero i want you to talk about is Bozo the Iron Man a charather from Quality Comics that later on went Defunct and got all it charathers own by DC and Bozo was one of them the character had few cameo appearances in DC comics and hadn't made a proper comeback at all
I may do him at some point.
I like the new intro but please keep the normal one for the villains
Sorry, probably wont do that - in with the new, out with the old, you know?
Mr. Rogues ok then whatever you choose to do I'm sure it's the right choice and I'll stick with you through it
Thanks, man!
he looks like jerma
You need to do another rogues history video
You mean the "complete history.." videos? They are a LOT of work, but there will come more eventually. Pengy will probably come some time in December.
The site you referenced in the video seems to be not online anymore.
How about Walt Disney’s creation, Dr. Christopher Syn, otherwise known as The Scarecrow.
Yet another Scarecrow?
Mr. Rogues I’m afraid so.
OOOH, new title card/opening for this series! Cool! :D Hello, Dick Tracy and...guy with a cross on his chest who I know but have embarrassingly forgotten the name of...CURSE YOU, PROFESSOR MEMORY; YOU LIED TO ME!
Also: "He simply couldn't sanction Funnyman's Buffoonery."
...Hello, reference. I won't say to what, *but I knoooow...*
Anyway, believe it or not, I actually know this series.
And yes, you may have a point there about the villains, after all it took Batman almost a year to get some truly great rogues.
@@mr.rogues4145 I've actually heard of Doctor Occult; I didn't notice the medallion in his hand, so I immediately presumed it was Tracy. My bad. :P And thank you for reminding me of Blitzkrieg. I knew the character, though not very well, but I couldn't for the life of me recall the name.
love your videos, but i miss your spoky voice, at least for batman videos. any way keep going!
Can you do the spirit next please
He's definately not forgotten.
