Thank God! I legit spent a full weekend and then a lot of time the following week trying to find or create this exact formula! I needed it for a custom effect (which I may send you sometime). I did so much research and I even tried to get a hold of the Si Stebbins book, but didn't find anything in the research, and could not get the book. I even looked at your older Si Stebbins Stack videos, along with a lot of other ones. This would have been so helpful 3 or 4 weeks ago. Anyways, I can't tell you just how much this has helped me! Thanks!
Can you please explain the formula to me then because I don’t understand the offset card part. I get the rest of the formula but I don’t get why Brian takes 3 card as the offset value.
I think he might not need one since he recently started producing his "Rogue's Arena" Performance Pad. However, if you are going to make something (no pun intended) for him, you should make a puzzle box. He loves them puzzle boxes :D
Since there is a pattern, you can square the deck. As long as you peak/memorize the bottom card, you can figure out the bottom 4. Qc would result in 3h, 6s, 9d, Qc. IMO, more impressive if you square the deck and put it down.
Great vid and version of the Si Stubbins. This way you have use your math brain. There is also a version by cutting the Deck by the spector (behind your back) the spectator pick the first card (see it ) an put it in the middle of the deck. When you turn around you take the deck and climse the bottom card. Count 3 further to the value (for example the card was a King of clubs = Ace, 2, 3 than keep the order rule of suits in mind = Heart- Pik - Clubs and Diamonds. The spectators card was a 3 of Diamond. Thanxx a lot Brian for your version.
I was just trying to figure the math on a Stebbins Stack for this effect last week. I was too lazy to get out of my chair and get a pen. I had paper on the table. Thankfully, I have Brian the intern to do all my little chores.
This is a great use for the chased deck. I've been practicing the 'how many cards did I cut' trick. A great addition to an already set up deck, and would work great just before shuffling into another trick. Thanks for another one for my repertoire.
Brushwood I'm telling you this because I'm sure you don't get to hear it enough. I'm glad you teach real nuts and bolts magic. I understand that selling props to do tricks are how lots of magicians survive, but by teaching the stuff devoid of special props you are actually making better magicians. I'm saying this because at a bar I ran into another magician recently. He had come out with a bunch of stuff from the magic shop, I just had my dollar store cards, matches and dice . He was genuinely impressed that I performed all night using just those things and other crap from around the bar. Made me feel good that it was my knowledge and talent and not my wallet that made my routine. Also made me feel like a real magician and not just a simple con man.
This trick gets really hard if you have bad memory, and even more hard the more people you add (especially if they pick different suits). Not easy, but MAN it is amazing. Also, you all MUST check out the PDF book. Trick 2 I believe is really cool ( the behind the back one). I will now devote myself to learning this stack.
Damn! I know this is an old post but hoping you still get this. SUPER EFFECT. Thanks so much for sharing this. It seems like an "impossible" outcome scenario and then BAM!
So just to be clear (*SPOILER ALERT*), You look at the bottom 4 cards and pick the one with the same suit as the Spectator's cards (I will now refer to it as a key card) You then take the value of that key card, and subtract it from the value of the spectator's card You multiply that number by 4 And then you subtract however many cards are keeping the key card from being the bottom Did I do that right?
2ManyTekkers I thought the same, but I looked through it and it all checks out. Check my math? First we subtract the 10 which is my club 1 from bottom. The difference between 10 and Queen is 3. Multiply by 4 is 12. subtract one. Am I off somewhere?
Wait wait wait, no I was wrong. Here's what you need to do. First off, a10 is less than a Queen, so you add 13, giving you 23. 23 - *12* (A queen is a 12, not 13 like you had earlier :'D) is 11 11 * 4 is 44 44 - 1 is a 43 The Queen is 43 cards from the top. Alternatively, you could do 12 (Queen) - 10 (Key Card) is 2. 2 * 4 is 8 8 + 1 (offset) is 9 If you have a face up deck and you deal down 9 cards (flipping each face down to maintain the order), the next face up card will be the Queen of Clubs
one of the first Scam School videos i ever saw was about this "chased" method of ordering the cards. thats how you got this subscriber, however long ago it was.
A way I've modified this trick is to cut the deck so that there is a club on the bottom. I do this by curling my hand and letting the deck flop back onto my fingers. Using my peripheral vision I look at the deck while keeping eye contact with my spectator. From there I just have to steal a glance at its value later on. Easy enough with a few hand movements. Once I know that I can just count backward so I can know the other 3 cards. It can be done with any card really, but I find it simpler to have a club on the bottom. It may require some good eyes but then you can pull this trick off without revealing the deck. While most people won't notice a pattern I am afraid of finding that one person that does.
Bottom Card peak is 9 of hearts ❤️. They pick Queen of Diamond. Can't subtract 12 from 9 so subtract 12 from 13+9 = 10. Multiply by 4 is 40 so we know the 40th card is Queen of Hearts but 26 before it is the Queen of Diamond in the 14th position using my Spades Hearts Club and Diamonds shape order.
that was a fake shuffle also all you need to do is do a riffle shuffle and then instead of joining all the cards together just push the cards that were in one of your hands out towards the other hand. (think of it like this you have a set of cards and you split the deck in two and do a riffle shuffle (the bottom half is on your right and top is on your left) instead of squaring and joining the cards together you slide the bunch of cards from your right hand towards your left and do the same to the other side so instead of having the bottom half on your right now the top half is on your right hand
Hopefully i can help some confused people look at the bottom 4 whatever suit matches the chosen card is x and the card chosen is y so X-y= z then x4 so z x 4 = A then A minus the cards left to get to the last card on the bottom so if it’s the 3rd card then -2 or if it was the fourth card -0 but if the chosen card is more than the bottom 4 cards so example chosen car is 7of clubs and bottom card is 4 of clubs it would become -3 x 4= -12 but it is from the card after the bottom so if bottom is 3 of clubs and the card based on order behind K of diamonds you start counting towards the top from that
I lost my shit when I saw that ad. I tried a few other vids, but didn't get any ads. Every time I refreshed this one it had it though. I think I'm going to download a few more ad blockers. I thought one was enough, but better safe than sorry.
Micah Philson Actually it's possible that two ad blockers will block two separate ads that the other won't. Basically two ad blockers might work together to block every ad, but one or the other won't. The downside would be your pc using more resources, but it probably wouldn't be significant enough to notice.
I saw on 9:42m the bandaid... not just on the back of hand but also on the thumb... did you get the stitches out already? I guess so... Taking mine of tomorrow... I still get shock wave on my finger... it's way to the tip of the finger... how it hurts!
They force the 3 of Clubs all the time. They originally picked it because it isn't a face card and it doesn't have a lot of pips, so it shows up well on video. They continue to use the same card as an inside joke for their fans.
In short when Penn and Teller force a Card, they like to force the 3 of Clubs since it shows up easily to both the TV and audience. Eventually, people started catching on, but they kept using it because a) Not many people even knew about forces & b) It was a running joke with fans.
Hey Brian, what happened to your index finger and thumb? I saw in the body armor episode of the Modern Rogue you had the same band-aids on, just curious is all!
There was a guy in my country had a channel about tricks with the card, and he told us the way to put the card in order, as well as how to caculate the position of a card, like him (*point to Scam School). And guess what? He was said: "what if the opponents suffle the deck but not cut it?" and then " :))) ". Just my short story, and my grammar is a little bit bad, please tell me if i wrong, i would be very appreciated :)
my friend has IQ of 163. he can remember every card in the deck even when shuffled. but his lazy AF. I told few people to shuffle the deck 3 times each while his blindfolded and looking back. and yet he guessed it. I asked him how those he know and he replies with: "you've started with normally ordered cards. there where 6 people shuffling the cards 3 times. 6x3=18, and 52-18=34. 34/:4=8 and half. from every 8th card it's all the same order, but the middle one with 4 cards goes reverse. I've split the deck in 4 and put cards in order so I can remember from where it began-1♠ than the 2♦ then the 3♣ and then 4♥. between the numbers it's easy to remember that cards ad to 13." me: wow… what?!? him: IT'S SIMPLE MATH GENIUS!
Wow, I've been binge watching your videos. Can I also make a request ?? There is this one trick I've never understood.... But there is no tutorial about it.
with this stack, how would you know what card is at a specific position? Like let's say that the spectator names a random number like 34 how would you then figure out what the card is in the 34th position?
What if the bottom pair card is for instance a 3 of clubs but they named a 10 of clubs? How would you work that out with the formula, because wouldn't you get a negative number?
Lympy Downunder I am talking about the first part of the formula buddy. You subtract the target card value from its pair on the bottom. Don't patronize me telling me to watch the video.
Griffith Horrell Yes it would. Let's imagine that 4 bottom cards are: 3 of hearts 6 of rhombus 9 of spades Q of something If someone choose 2 of spades you do: 9 ('coz spades) - 2 =7 7*4=28 28 - 1('coz Q of sth is last one)=27 It's 27th card If someone choose 2 of hearts you do: 3('coz hearts)-2=1 1*4=4 4-3('coz there are three under it)=1 It's first from top I think you got it now THAT'S EZ '\_(·.·)_/`
This trick is not working and I have no idea what I am doing wrong it’s quite annoying Edit: I figured it out, the video is wrong when it says “bottom pair - chosen card” it is the reverse. You do the card chosen by the spectator minus the bottom card. Then it works.
You probably set it up in Reverse Si Stebbins, which is why you have to do the spectator's card minus the bottom card. If you set it up in regular Si Stebbins, the info in the video is correct.
0:21 that is the problem, you start shuffling the cards and was impossible to understand your trick because Its clear you had used an arranged deck. Anyway, great video, Thanks!
Yaks Magic If you're refering to the fourth card from the bottom and if the spectator's card is a different suit from it, then you start the formula Brian explained in the video with the card in the bottom four packet that matches suits with the spectator's card. Say in my case the fourth card from the bottom is the ace of spades and the spectator chose 5 of hearts, you would instead use the ten of hearts at the bottom of the deck in the formula. 10 of hearts (at the bottom of the deck) minus 5 of hearts (spectator's selection) equals 5, multiplied by 4 (4 suits) gives you 20. Subtract the offset cards (how many cards are below the 10 of hearts((formula card)), since in my case the 10 IS the bottom card, the offset number will be zero) from 20. So you end up with 20th from the top of the deck as the concluded position of the chosen card. *deep breath*
Hopefully i can help look at the bottom 4 whatever suit matches the chosen card is x and the card chosen is y so X-y= z then x4 so z x 4 = A then A minus the cards left to get to the last card on the bottom so if it’s the 3rd card then -2 or if it was the fourth card -0 but if the chosen card is more than the bottom 4 cards so example chosen car is 7of clubs and bottom card is 4 of clubs it would become -3 x 4= -12 but it is from the card after the bottom so if bottom is 3 of clubs and the card based on order behind K of diamonds you start counting towards the top from that
It would be kind of useless to use a Si Stebbins stack for an ACAAN, unless you had "bookmarks" and were able to cut an exact number of cards to the top. However, if you've heard of a way to use a stacked deck for an ACAAN, let me know. A better effect could be a cold reading effect. Have the Mark completely cut the deck wherever they want, however many times. Then they take the top card. You take a peek at the bottom card, and you know what their card is, because its 3 more and the next suit over.
Fo4urthDimension, I sort of thought of one with this stack, but its kind of stupid. Basically you figure out where there card is using this method. Then you start dealing down cards until you reach their card, at which point you can start 2nd or bottom dealing. You deal down their card at their number. The only problem is when the card they name is lower down than the number. Then you'd probably have to cut the deck and start over, which you can do by taking a peak at the bottom 4 again.

I was just trying to figure the math on a Stebbins Stack for this effect last week. I was too lazy to get out of my chair and get a pen. I had paper on the table. Thankfully, I have Brian the intern to do all my little chores.

Brushwood I'm telling you this because I'm sure you don't get to hear it enough.

Also I have bought the scam school books and your book on fire eating so I'm not a complete freeloader.

Was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong for about an hour until I realised I needed to reverse the order of the deck
So just to be clear (*SPOILER ALERT*),
You look at the bottom 4 cards and pick the one with the same suit as the Spectator's cards (I will now refer to it as a key card)
You then take the value of that key card, and subtract it from the value of the spectator's card
You multiply that number by 4
And then you subtract however many cards are keeping the key card from being the bottom
Did I do that right?
2ManyTekkers That's what I got from the vid as well. Try it with the Queen of Clubs. I can't seem to get it right.
23 - *12* (A queen is a 12, not 13 like you had earlier :'D) is 11
11 * 4 is 44
44 - 1 is a 43
The Queen is 43 cards from the top.
Alternatively, you could do
12 (Queen) - 10 (Key Card) is 2.
2 * 4 is 8
8 + 1 (offset) is 9
If you have a face up deck and you deal down 9 cards (flipping each face down to maintain the order), the next face up card will be the Queen of Clubs
Much math tho.
Ok. Adding 13 may help. Thanks!
one of the first Scam School videos i ever saw was about this "chased" method of ordering the cards. thats how you got this subscriber, however long ago it was.

The Chsd is one of the best systems in Card Magic🖒
Agreed!
Say what you will. But Si Stebbins is my favorite stack. Keep your Mnemonica, Aaronson, etc. I'll keep my Si.
legend has it, if you are sarcastic enough brian brushwood himself will reply with a funny comment
You can also find what specific card is on a chosen location in the deck by doing the formula backwards
I'll see you in schenectady this saturday dude! Can't wait to see your tricks :D
awesome!!
Only need to remember card, not bottom 4. Just count backwards by 3 to work out others and do reverse chsd to figure out suite.
I love that you know the index number for magic books, that is hilarious.
Si stebbins tricks are pretty sweet ngl
I need to get one of those felt pads/tables for my tricks! Picking up cards from a regular table is tough and clumsy.
Is that also a false shuffle at 0:18-0:25? What is that shuffe called?
u can watch a video by 52kards called false in the hands riffle shuffle. It's not a tabled shuffle though.
I'm Not sure if Brian did it, but you can use a push throughbshuffle or a narrow shuffle.
Zarrow shuffle
that was a fake shuffle also all you need to do is do a riffle shuffle and then instead of joining all the cards together just push the cards that were in one of your hands out towards the other hand.
Hopefully i can help some confused people look at the bottom 4 whatever suit matches the chosen card is x and the card chosen is y so
X-y= z then x4 so z x 4 = A then A minus the cards left to get to the last card on the bottom so if it’s the 3rd card then -2 or if it was the fourth card -0 but if the chosen card is more than the bottom 4 cards so example chosen car is 7of clubs and bottom card is 4 of clubs it would become -3 x 4= -12 but it is from the card after the bottom so if bottom is 3 of clubs and the card based on order behind K of diamonds you start counting towards the top from that
How set up the deck first ?
A... a Dairy Queen ad?
... ad block... HOW COULD YOU LET ME DOWN?!?! It's worked for so long only to fail this one time just now somehow!
I lost my shit when I saw that ad. I tried a few other vids, but didn't get any ads. Every time I refreshed this one it had it though. I think I'm going to download a few more ad blockers. I thought one was enough, but better safe than sorry.
cmck Hire like 5 ad blockers, let them fight to the death to see who's the best and can block them all!
Whichever can block the other blockers!
Micah Philson Actually it's possible that two ad blockers will block two separate ads that the other won't. Basically two ad blockers might work together to block every ad, but one or the other won't. The downside would be your pc using more resources, but it probably wouldn't be significant enough to notice.
Coolest trick ever taking this to school tomorrow
hahaha Si Stebbins my favorite hahaha i wish you would upload more od the si stebbins card trick
Good guests.
Bottom card is King diamonds card picked is Ace hearts. 13-1=12x4=48 so 48th card is Ace diamonds. How do you adjust for this?
I've practiced but when I use for example the indian shuffle, the formula doesn't work or do I have to use only the shuffles shown in the video?
Just came from the false cuts video
The start gave it away for me
Hahaha
Brian I'm surprised you don't have any Achievement Hunter folks on ScamSchool more often, considering the location.
Si Stebbins strikes again!

Scam School I managed to do this really amazing trick now thx Brian however I can't cut the deck and end up with the correct number

answer is 6, 3+13-10, watch the video.
Lympy Downunder I am talking about the first part of the formula buddy. You subtract the target card value from its pair on the bottom. Don't patronize me telling me to watch the video.

Is there a way for us to send tricks/puzzles in and possibly have them featured on an episode?
brian@shwood.com
but what would happen if some one chose the same value but a different suit would that change the whole sequence
Griffith Horrell Yes it would. Let's imagine that 4 bottom cards are:
3 of hearts
6 of rhombus
9 of spades
Q of something
If someone choose 2 of spades you do:
9 ('coz spades) - 2 =7
7*4=28
28 - 1('coz Q of sth is last one)=27
It's 27th card
If someone choose 2 of hearts you do:
3('coz hearts)-2=1
1*4=4
4-3('coz there are three under it)=1
It's first from top
I think you got it now
THAT'S EZ
'\_(·.·)_/`
How do you determine the offset amount? Is it determined by where the card of the same suit is at the bottom? Someone please explain
Yes.
Additional cards under your key card. 0-3
Clubs heart spade diamonds then add 3 to get the next card
This trick is not working and I have no idea what I am doing wrong it’s quite annoying
Edit: I figured it out, the video is wrong when it says “bottom pair - chosen card” it is the reverse. You do the card chosen by the spectator minus the bottom card. Then it works.

666th Viewer? Where's Mr. Happy Pants when you need him!?
Can someone help me i'm a little confuse on the offset on how to get the offset's value. Thanks in advance
Bro I love ur magic!!!
I keep getting negative numbers when I do the math, and it doesn't show me where the card is. What am I doing wrong?
You need to add 13 if you get a negative number. (Because it's cyclic).
can someone explain me what really the offset in the formula mean?please
What cards are you using in this video? Are they Artisans?
Was I the only one super confused when the OUTLAWS became the Arcana Omega?
Please give me how u setup the card, am not understand
Have you read the Si Stebbins Pamphlet?

i had trouble understanding the offset thing. can someone help me?
It's a great trick!! I love it!!
0:21 that is the problem, you start shuffling the cards and was impossible to understand your trick because Its clear you had used an arranged deck. Anyway, great video, Thanks!

Really good stuff. Thank you!!!
What if the four card from the bottom is a different suit then what they selected
GjohnsonT thanks for the help
Yaks Magic No problem bud. =)
sometimes the color of the card isnt the same to what the spectator says pls help
wish every tut was like this

NOTIF SQUAD WHERE YOU AT?
Just me :(
I keep getting negative numbers. Am I doing something wrong?
Add 13 to avoid negatives. Example from the end 1+13-9=5
Brian what happened to your hand. Were you guys playing around too much with the homemade armor?
Hi i'm a little confused on how ths formula works could someone plz explain it to me simpler
Hopefully i can help look at the bottom 4 whatever suit matches the chosen card is x and the card chosen is y so
X-y= z then x4 so z x 4 = A then A minus the cards left to get to the last card on the bottom so if it’s the 3rd card then -2 or if it was the fourth card -0 but if the chosen card is more than the bottom 4 cards so example chosen car is 7of clubs and bottom card is 4 of clubs it would become -3 x 4= -12 but it is from the card after the bottom so if bottom is 3 of clubs and the card based on order behind K of diamonds you start counting towards the top from that
@@HNemo880 thank you for your help but i have now found an easier formula that works just as well
mismag 822 did the same trick 2 days ago
i didn't understand how to arrange the values :(
What means subtracht the offset Thanks ???
Brian get off the stag, you're a kid xD
so are you if you cant spell stage correctly
Could you use this stack for an ACAAN? Thanks though, great video!
Ok thank you :) I don't know any ACAAN so my knowledge is basically none
Fo4urthDimension, I sort of thought of one with this stack, but its kind of stupid. Basically you figure out where there card is using this method. Then you start dealing down cards until you reach their card, at
which point you can start 2nd or bottom dealing. You deal down their card at their number. The only problem is when the card they name is lower down than the number. Then you'd probably have to cut the deck and start over, which you can do by taking a peak at the bottom 4 again.
Haha yeah I kind of had the same idea! :)
What happen to your hand Brian
