  • A short conversation on similarities between Tai Chi and Yoga.
Teodor is the founder of the Ki Train Method and an instructor of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Ba Gua and Aikido.
Maha is a Hatha Yoga teacher.
Both Tai Chi and Yoga focus on improving health and wellbeing. Stretching is the common element considered by both as being beneficial for self-healing.
They both have great purpose and results if practiced with high awareness and understanding.

I have done both Tai-Chi and Yoga. Both are great mind-body workout. I personally prefer Tai-Chi, especially Wu style. After practicing for years, I can feel the true joy and happiness inside me along with abundant energy throughout the day after Tai-Chi practice. In Tai-Chi, we use mind to direct our intentions, use our intentions to direct the energy, then use the energy to nourish/ balance our entire body to achieve optimal health. No force/ discomfort in any practices of Tai-Chi.

Tai chi works on stretching and opening the inside of the body such as fascia, joints, tendons, etc. Yoga is mostly stretching muscles, bending, the spine and developing flexibility.

Very interesting discussion. You mentioned tai chi keeping thenspine straight. In the Cheng Man Ching Lineage, the loosening exercises done at the beginning of each class do bend and twist the spine

to me, the core of taichi is the water philosophy mentioned by Bruce Lee: "be shapeless, formless like water. you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. you put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crush. Be water my friend." And so to me, taichi is everywhere. It is in our art work, daily job, food, relationship with people around you, even politics, u name it. Love the video. Thanks for doing this.

Wu tai chi, and another, lean with a straight back, to allow the spinal fluid to heal the spine. Pictures of Yang Cheng Fu, has him leaning. The old yoga was for warriors, doing yoga as preparation for battle.

As mentioned by Ms Maha, the brief introduction to yoga was just like touching the tip of the iceberg, yes, Yoga is tremendous and it may take a lifetime to master all the Asanas (postures). One of the objectives of stretching is to prepare the nerves and muscles to be capable to sit in Asana (posture) for a longer period of time. If a practitioner can sit in one posture very comfortably for at least three hours then he is considered to have mastered that posture. Even if you could sit in a posture for a few minutes you will be amazed at the relief it provides physically and mentally. Padmasana, Vajrasana, Gorakshana are the most important postures that keep the body stable while you go deep in Dhyana (deeper meditation). There are various records of yoga beating cancer and other diseases including 11-year-old Tabay Atkins - the youngest yoga instructor - whose mother was a cancer patient, and others.
In ancient times there were over 300,000 Asanas which are now reduced to over four scores
As per the yoga principle, there are 112 chakras (energy centres) in our body including seven basic and four secondary ones. The energy centre mentioned in Tai Chi is the third chakra called Manipura in yoga.
Yoga practice goes much deeper, it's like an ocean. but it's also the mental and physical preparation of the body for samadhi (beyond Nirvana) .... better practise yoga and realise ... Well! Thanks for covering this topic.

Cheng man ching was comparing yoga and Taichi like: Yoge is fine, but there is nothing you can do if someone is going to push you off your billow :)

Tai chi is chinese and Yoga is indian, however there are chinese people doing yoga and indians doing tai chi. This is due to the influence of Hong Kong-films and stretchy pants.

As a lifelong practitioner of the Taoist traditions of kung Fu I would say all forms of Chinese arts are yoga. yoga is the ritual magick of the east. Ritual magick is the yoga of the west.
