  • GrillGrates Season over time and require very little care other than wiping or brushing the raised rails. Grill Pads or Brushes OK. Cleaning in the sink is OK, but NO Dishwasher or caustic cleaners like oven cleaner. Keep debris from building up in the valleys, and savor a well seasoned GrillGrate!

    I let them get hot. Then take half an onion and use it like a puck and wipe the fins down. Throw the steaks on, sear for a minute or two, lift and wipe with the onion and lay it back down off angle. The onion smells awesome and keeps the steak from sticking. When I'm done, I flip the grates over on the fire and let the coals burn off the rest. Anything left just flicks off.

    I agree with monkeyman 522...the heat of your grill is the only cleaner you need. I plan to post a video soon showing my grilling routine. By the way, these GrillGrates are awesome! I've bought two sets for my large gas grill and a smaller set for my Weber Q grill. I initially bought the wrong size and planned to return them. I decided to give them to a friend instead...he's now hooked on them just like me! We often send each other pics of whatever we're grilling. Thanks for a great product!!

    I've been using these grill grates for about a year now. Other than spritzing the grates with a little cooking spray, there really is no maintenance. Occasionally the black coating down in the channels will flake up and I just push it off with the spatula it came with. At the temperatures the grate gets to it cleans itself. The worse it looks, the better it cooks.

    From livestrong, seems like Anodized Aluminum is safe and doesn't leech:
    Anodization is a process by which aluminum is treated with a nonreactive hard coating of aluminum called aluminum oxidation, which does not leach, but it might still be prudent to avoid storing tomato sauce and other acidic substances in any aluminum vessel. Care should also be taken to discard aluminum ware that is damaged in any way, which can happen even with the anodized version.

    I think it's a really bad recommendation to season anything with olive oil it's thick and gummy and gets sticky probably the worst oil you can use

    I never use wire on grills anymore. One stray piece of wire breaking off and attaching to food stuck in the throats after eating and a trip to the ER is once to many times.

    I've tried many ways. My recommendation is just high heat for 30 min. Incredible you can even use a napkin to wipe the ashes...

    So, what’s the best way to season them initially. Ive seen using an onion without any instructions on temperature or how long. I’ve seen not to use olive oil, use olive oil, etc.

    Bob- there is no science to back up this misconception. AL and aluminum cookware, bakeware, cans etc has been generations of great cooks and still is. No science or FDA action on this subject.

    Can I use the Grill Grates in place of the original grates?? They fit perfectly on my Char Broiller, I purchased the 18.5" grates. OR do they require the original grates, to sustain them, to avoid warping or sagging?

    • @bobparker2024
      @bobparker2024 9 лет назад

      I have replaced the original grate on one of my grills and it works fine. On the other (smaller) shelf on the same grill, the Grill Grates are a very loose fit and move around a lot and one fell in. Since I replaced the smaller grill and placed the Grill Grates on top of it, no more problem.
      I guess it depends on how well they fit on a particular grill.

    You mentioned to use olive oil on the rails to season the grills yet your brochure says not to as it can cause stickiness over 400 degrees. Which is correct? Thanks.

      +George Catman sorry our auto alerts were being sent to a dead mail box! OLD video but we learned olive oil smokes at 400F so we revised our suggestions to high heat canola oil or other high heat oils. Thanks.

    Aren't their well known health issues with grilling on Aluminum at high temperatures? Like Dementia, and Alzheimer's?
    Especially if you cook frequently on a Kamado at high temps, and anodizing eventually flakes off in your food?

    • @Grillgrate_eat_well
      @Grillgrate_eat_well  7 лет назад

      Frankly well dis-proven. Heirloom Al pots & pans for generations have served well. AL is very common element and no evidence that cooking with it ends up in your bloodstream. Unlike cast iron which does have ferrous transfer. Hard Anodized Aluminum is great cookware. From the NY Times:
      Cookware Recommendations
      Aluminum
      Aluminum cookware is very popular. Nonstick, scratch-resistant anodized aluminum cookware is a good choice. The hard surface is easy to clean. It is sealed so aluminum cannot get into food.
      There have been concerns in the past that aluminum cookware increases the risk for Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's Association reports that using aluminum cookware is not a major risk for the disease.
      Uncoated aluminum cookware is a greater risk. This type of cookware can easily melt. It can cause burns if it gets too hot. Still, research has shown that the amount of aluminum this cookware leaches into food
      from is very small.

    • @Condor1970
      @Condor1970 7 лет назад

      The idea is very sound in design. I am looking for this exact kind of design for my new Kamado grill. The health risks are my only concern. Does the anodizing NEVER come off? I am a bit concerned it will flake off into the food like Non-stick coating in pots and pans does over time.
      What size should I purchase for the Pit Boss Kamado that has a 20.5" diameter grate?

    So grilling on them 5-10x a year will get you Alzheimer's huh. Do you use a cellphone, or sit in front of a laptop or monitor. Bob, kids contribute to Alzheimer's too. You might want to go sit in the restaurants kitchen's you eat in, there are many other things there that could harm you before something like Alzheimer's.

    Its been 5years now and I can't be happier with the grill grates.I love these things. I've had several friends purchase them and they are just as pleased and happy .I've even brought a few sets to Italy and I had to buy more the next time I went. I can't think of cooking on anything else. I'm probably going to go custom fit on my new Weber this year. I ''ll never be without them. This year I got into sous vide cooking and let me tell you, reverse searing the meats make everything better than you can imagine with the grill grates. BEST PRODUCT I've bought in Years !!!

    Why not use your dishwasher?

    • @Grillgrate_eat_well
      @Grillgrate_eat_well  8 лет назад +1

      +SuperGhettoBob over time the detergent is caustic and will cause any aluminum cookware to pit and tarnish over time. Besides your wife will likely clobber you if you put greasy GrillGrates in your dishwasher! We suggest soaking them 1-2X a year in dish SOAP like dawn or joy. Thats it!

    Hi. Are they any good with charcoal barbecues? Thx.

    • @Grillgrate_eat_well
      @Grillgrate_eat_well  8 лет назад

      absolutely- you can be more agressive and less 2 zone. Use more surface and have protection from flareups so no need to move the food a lot. The drippings are a flavor pop with GrillGrates too as they vaporize just under the food.

      They can get killer hot with just about any fuel. Gas on low or a single layer of charcoal will work because of the flat surface that gathers all the heat. The back is also wonderful for searing burgers and steaks.
