40k Containment Breach where you play as Custodes in the Black Cells during an power out beneath the Imperial Palace, and the vaults have begun opening.
Update to idea: Who you play as changes with difficulty level. Easy - You're a Custodes Medium - You're a Sister of Silence Hard - You're a Lucifer Black. Nightmare - You're one of the civilians acting as cleaning staff
I really like the idea of a mimic enemy - maybe from Tzeentch - that runs on a machine learning algorithm that learns from how somebody on the squad talks and moves. Imagine your friend suddenly starts talking in voice chat, but they make no sense, only for them to start screaming "That wasn't me!"
A game where you’re being stalked by a Necron Flayed One, with your guardsman squad being picked off or have to fight it off temporarily while trying to make it off of wherever you are. Like Alien, but with a big ass Flayed One
I think Arthur’s expectations are either ridiculous or warped if he thinks Watcher in the Rain isn’t a good horror story. The audio drama had me enraptured and horrified. Consider it one of the best short stories I’ve read in the 40k space.
I will say if they do a 40k horror game, they should add a "knowledge of the setting" slider on top of the difficulty slider. So if you know a shit ton of lore, the game obscures the info on data logs even more so you are kept guessing instead of going "oh its a slaneesh demon".
This is honestly a great idea but it'd be pretty much impossible to implement, because I know relatively little lore but will occasionally pull random bits out that surprise the more knowledgeable 40k fans in my friend group but can be proven true. Sure, as a general rule it could help, but it might be tricky to get right
1:17:14 I could see a game where the horror comes from the area and your actions. Like you can be generous in signing off some documents for rations but you might be caught and have your payment docked. Also you will have to explore the buildings around you to deliver notifications
Paperplease but it is the Adeptus Administratum where you have to go through the paperwork of an entire sector while dealing with ridiculously cruel RNG choice options and you have to see the consequences of your choices, answer for them and also suffer them depending on how it goes. Another that is not necessarily horror would be a Valkyria Chronicles style tactical game that has you playing as a Magos in charge of a bunch of Skitarii, taking direct control over them while managing the map.
Omfg I felt so caught when Arthur mentioned the Void Wyrms at 52:10 because for the last couple of months I've been homebrewing a SM chapter by that name with a similar specialization. Never heard of them before but it's kinda funny that someone came up with a similar idea before😅
As far as warhammer horror - Dan abnett had a good short story about a plague that even corrupted an SM apothecary...and then gave it a callback in the Eisenhorn novel about the Magos - that also had a strong horror element.
The tzeench idea could be used for an invasion type mode where someone can join and have to photograph you and complete sabotaging objectives to stop you from photographing other creatures. And theres a 10% chance that the invading cultist turns into chaos spawn.
1:09:13 No, the Alpha Iron Warrior should hack their coms and be giving false directions using the voice of their commander. Then during a cutscene where he grabs the main character have his helmet blown off while they're in the middle of getting new directions revealing his face looking like their commander and giving those orders before changing back to Alpharius. Then, from there on, the Chaos Ritual Chant is sent through the ships broadcast speakers along with the screams of each of his kills...
If I would make a horror game, it would not involve anything "well known" in their universe. Using some stuff from the Deep Warp would be an excellent start.
Sorry, another note. Again, I think the horror element can work if you can avoid spoilers - since the average guardsman has no idea of the actual warp/demon threat - because of the need to keep the population ignorant. Guys like Cain or Gaunt run across stuff all the time but a rookie officer or squad leader, etc running into a ritual is a different story - esp since they should be able to do graphical errors in terms of the chaos symbols, etc.
I have had the idea of a alien isolation style game in a hive city with either gene steals cults or tyranids were your fleeing both them and or extermanotis
In hindsight the scariest thing to ever happen to me was nearly getting mauled by my cousins dog when I was a kid. By the grace of god and a short leash, and the dog probably just playing too rough with a small child, I made it out with a slightly gnawed ass and a piece of my dignity gone
A dead space style game of a lone guardsman on the back legs of losing a hive city to orks. Survival horror with brutal executions like being eaten alive by snotlings or being caught by a painboy, a focus on combat but also having to keep track of ammo: the lasgun is an amazing tool but it's still orks.
Conceptually too, a/the Blackstone Fortress has a lot of horror elements - in Fall of Cadia or the Omnibus. You could make an RPG or adventure game with madness elements like the classic Eternal Darkness (gamecube) or something similar where random rooms have random effects or enemies - you gradually develop your skills on multiple visits to the fortress (like the board game) - but each trip is procedurally generated- maybe scaling enemies- or maybe random.
20:06 Could have genestealers stalking the Servitors. Knowing they make noise when they spot living things. Making the chance encounters even more hectic. Personal edit, as I don't know if it'll be talked about just yet: I think the only way you could play a slaanesh style horror game, would be to take inspiration from the games House of Velez, one and two. 58:43 Persistence hunting. The thing that makes humanity so scary, makes Space Marines even scarier.
Mr Bones idea is explicitly that you're fucked from the start. How can he say he hates that, when that's exactly what it is. A guards can't turn back they have to go forward or they die
Im going to say this with warhammer horror peter fehervari is one of the best eldritch horror writers in the black library start with fire warrior and enjoy the dark coil with me traveler
Sry Bones but I completely disagree, 40k/Sci-Fi is PERFECT for Horror. The only problem is that the writers don't know how to write it. *also, I love that you keep bringing up "VIRUS," because it deserves soo much more aknowledgement
The movement style, why not use the original? This one still moves too much, especially avatars closer to the edges of the screen. There's also too much of a range between when someone is talking quietly and when they're talking loudly, so it's hard to tell when someone who is speaking at low intensity is talking, and someone speaking loudly is distractingly violent.
I feel like my home brew inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus is more horror than anything Arthur has read.. because even though he is a great Deamon hunter the warp really can't be explained.
Following the Mr Bones talk about the Only War sesion, you guys could do an episode about TTRPG's based on the 40k universe

The greatest Warhammer 40K horror game is a receipt from games workshop
🤣🤣🤣
Too spooky for me
I’m still waiting for them to add a Night Lord or that one Noise Marine by Adrian Smith to Dead by Daylight
A night lord could be cool
What would the survivor be? A guardsman?
Night Lord or Emperors Children Marine as DbD killer would be so dope
Alien Isolation-esque game where you’re a lone guardsman hiding from a nightlord on a boarded ship
it'd have to be a critically wounded night lord then, no way it wouldn't hear you simply *breathing* from like a couple rooms away.

Arthur bones literally smokes crack. He's my upstairs neighbor and i can smell the ether through the vents
This is one of my favorite episodes so far. Everyone seems to be having a great time making it too!
Warsmiths are a rank in the Iron Warriors, Warpsmiths are the chaos equivalent of Techmarines
Did like red die? Haven’t seen bro in a minute 😂
I think playing a slave from a gunnery deck on an imperial ship that’s been swallowed by Tyranids would make for a crazy terrifying experience.
In the name of all it's holy this is feeling like warp time radio I miss those days thank you for rekindling fond memories

szarekh's idea for a 40k game legit sounded epic though

I feel like alien isolation but with a necron flayer would be neat
RIP Red, gone not forgotten
what happened to red?

Wow on the exact same wavelength when mr Bones talked about Virus lol. Exactly the movie I thought of.

The true horror game all along: Making the tech priest confront a tiny spider
I really wanna make the Wh40k Lethal company game now

"I'm a huge fps nerd so it would be the typical 3rd person shooter" ?
The more i listen to Mr. Bones, the more he sounds like me fr fr
The pumpkin version of Arthur's avatar kinda slaps tbh.

Amnesia the bunker but in 40k.
Outer wilds mentioned, also Arthur killed it.
Im going to say this with warhammer horror
peter fehervari is one of the best eldritch horror writers in the black library start with fire warrior and enjoy the dark coil with me traveler

I presume this was either edited before further experimentation was made, or they are tzeentch cultists in disguise.
@@BenisDDDefinitely the cultists thing!
