go to arches in the off season and in the mornings. the throngs don't arrive until 9:30 or so. then just avoid the popular spots as much as possible. the NP's are more crowded than even but Arches is huge and laid out nicely so you can avoid crowds
@@edrader It seems the area is very sandy and rocky ground. Wheelchairs, no matter the lay-out of the area, have severe difficulties with either of those types of ground.

I have been to Moab and Arches on 4 occasions. I enjoy the view of the rocks as they seem to light up at sunset. I enjoyed the narrow arch in the video. When in Moab I camp at the Hampton Inn.
Arches is wonderful and I loved your video. I was lucky enough to camp in their campground before you had to have reservations. It was all serendipity. One of the best camping times I've had in 25 years of camping in New Mexico, where I live, and in Colorado and Utah. Next time I'm up that way I will hike to, at least, the tunnel. Thank you. I loved that you didn't talk the entire time and when you did talk it was good comments and information. The photography put me right back there, sights and sounds and smells.

Yep, I really loved being there all alone. And there are even more petroglyph above/past that swimming hole and waterfall, but I didn't have time to check them out.
My wife and I love Arches National Park but have only been there once about a year and a half ago. We do plan on going again. Thanks for your insight on the hiking, I'll have to look for your book.

We first went to Moab about 9 yrs ago and go back every year. We just wish we had found out how awesome it is long before we did. We are not young and our ability to hike far is not good but we use our Jeep to get into some beautiful places. We always go mid to late Sept and be there during the week days. Crowds arent that bad then and its cooler. Thanks for your video of 2 places we may never get to see in person....

Hi Tristan, Moab and surrounding areas were so quiet and uncommercialised during the early 1990's. So different today, its lost a lot of its charm for me. I used to regularly buy books from The Back of Beyond bookstore, which has thrived over the years since. That's where I first got aqainted to Edward Abbey. I've since obtained all he wrote. That very narrow Arch reminded me of Landscape Arch that I last hiked under in 1994. As always, love your videos... reminding me of such great trips in the four corners area I have made. Oldtimer Englishman now exploring from my armchair.

I am blown away! I’ve been down there many times myself and I’ve watched dozens of vlogs made by hikers but this one is hands down the best! I can’t seem to pick a favorite part. The beautiful fishing hole in the beginning is gorgeous but so is the rest. And the cowboy graffiti is way cool too. I’m excited to check out some of your other videos. So thank you
Next fall I want to take a week or two and do all of the big parks in Utah. I prefer hitting the big parks in the off season. Cooler weather is nicer for hiking, no crowds in the way, unique photos compared to all of the shots that come from summer color and light. I recently did Zion in the snow and it was like a whole new experience. I like to get to the parks really early to do the easy stuff that I want to see before the crowd, then hit the harder trails to escape the crowds rolling in by lunch time.

I love the Arches NP. Of course, MS does not make it easy just getting to the popular arches but I hobble along. Would never be able to get out where you were so thanks for taking me along.
I Love Arches N P even though I've never been there (yet!). I really enjoyed that small arch you featured. I think that just like you wanting to climb to the highest point in all(?) of the states, you should film a video of visiting ALL of the over two thousand arches in the park! (there's a challenge for you). And I wish I go with you. Thank you for your videos.
That tunnel is really neat! My kids and I made a brief stop at Arches in August. We had limited time so I was worried about lines at the entrance but we arrived early enough in the day it wasn’t a problem. Someday I hope to make it back when we can spend several days in the area.
I live within 50 miles of Great Smoky Mountain NP and a couple national forests, so I can't call SE Utah beautiful, but it sure is striking. Thanks for the video!
You Easterners are all the same. I know because I used to be one about 40 years ago. You think there has to be trees everywhere to be beautiful, but once you spend a little more time in the desert south west, it kind of grows on you. You have to do more than look out of your air conditioned car window. Get out and do some hiking. On second thought ...forget what I just said...we have enough people out here. Just kidding.
Went to Arches 3 times in the early 70s. No wait at the entrance. But the Giant RVs were just getting popular and they would hog the view sites at the only and very small camp site. And they would party into the early hours. I only had my VW and a tent and I was looked on some very strange person. Also, I you said the RV folks NEVER left the trail. In fact I don't think they left the camp site. I would spend the entire day hiking and rarely saw anyone. Even with the small crowds you still had to get to Delicate Arch VERY early to avoid the crowds. On my last visit the park rangers told us to watch out for flash floods. Two old ladies ignored the ranger's warning and just started across the dry creek bed and then came the water. They started screaming and asking for help. Everyone told them to keep walking across the creek. But they just froze and kept screaming. In the end about a dozen of us took a chance and went the 3 feet into the creek and pulled the ladies out. That's right THREE FEET. That is why I remember this story. Three Feet. The very last time I decided to visit Arches was in '79 and the line of cars was worse than what you showed. I turned around and have never been back.

I live in Utah & didn't even know about this area of the park. I too love to get off the beaten path so maybe I'll do a bit of exploring the next time I'm down in that area. Thanks for showing us parts of the park that no one has appreciated yet!
Yes get there early. We went there a few years ago, we had timed it to arrive just as they opened. As we got to the check-in booth there was car in front of us , he stopped, waited, did nothing and then drove on. I pulled up to the window, realized there was no one home and drove on also. We then stopped at the visitor center which also was not open yet. I spoke with a Ranger in the parking lot who told we could go ahead into the if we wished and pay on the way out as the center wouldn’t be open for another 45 minutes. I explained I had a Senior Pass (get in free at all national parks) he said not to worry about it then and enjoy the park. When we left hours later the line stretched from the entrance booths out to the highway, about a 1/2 mile.
That was really cool! On our trip in the USA we only spend a couple of days in Utah, so we did Zion and Bryce Canyon - but there was so much more to see and do! We need to come back another time!
Great video once again! I agree with you about the crowds, a little effort will eliminate all of the people who just want to see the sights from their car or vista point. I found Yellowstone to be this way for me anyway.
How beautiful Arches is. I love it that you give GPS coordinates so that I can follow along on Google Maps. It's great to know exactly where your campsites are. I may never make it to Arches again, but I know where I'm staying if I do. :)

When I saw the second waterfall the first thing I thought was I may see that in your next fishing video, I knew you would have not left without trying it. I couldn't.
The Green River road, (dirt road) from green river utah to the Great Gallery pictographs in Horseshoe Canyon, and many other amazing desert sights and marvels, is a fantastic road to explore. You can go down the Flint Trail (high clearance 4WD) to the Maze District of Canyonlands N.P., but one needs to be fully prepared for remote travel.
I've climbed Half Dome three times, and I think a couple of times I've gotten there early enough that there were only a handful of us on top. But the third time, yeah, the cables section was basically a solid line of people. Not fun!
Cool video! Also a lot of good hints about timing at popular National Parks. When I see those arches like you hiked up to, I always wonder how much longer they will stand? Next year? Or maybe a thousand or more? A blink of the eye geologically speaking.

A good starting point is to look at the guidebooks for an area. Sometimes the author will say how heavily used a trail is. And you can also compare what is in the guidebooks to lists of hikes that you can find online. If it's listed online but not in the guidebooks or park literature, the odds are good that it's less frequented.
We have Ayer's rock in Uluru national Park Central Australia and it looks pretty easy to climb but in it's history at least 37 people have died climbing it and a lot of them overseas tourists.
j solo Then he wouldn't be SUV RVing. LOL. There seems to be a different culture between roof top tent campers and SUV campers. Those Rubicon guys drag half their house along with them. Then they spend two hours dragging all their stuff out of their jeep, and setting up camp. Then they spend another two hours in the morning breaking their camp down and putting all their stuff away again. It's hard to get to the park at 7AM that way. SUV campers just go until it gets dark, then they eat something and climb into the back and go to sleep. Then wake up in the morning, eat something and they are ready to go. It's a much more simple travel lifestyle. It's the way I would like to camp if I had an SUV.
Thank you so much for opening my eyes to the possibility of visiting the National parks again. I had given up on them due to the extreme crowds. I would love to hike in to that tunnel. Can you give the coordinates of the trail head and possibly the tunnel? I have been to Arches probably as many times as you said you have but I don't recall that trail head. If this information is in your book, please just give me the name of the book and I will gladly order it. Thanks again !
No Fiery Furnace? Been hiking for over 30 yrs and that was such a great time. My wife and I went the first week of December, will never hit any f the big 5 again in the late spring or early summer. The winter is where its at. Is the MIll Creek trail the one in the town of Moab? Love that whole area. Life changing experiences every time.

Climbed half dome 9 years ago. It was a wed afternoon in June. At least a couple hundred people.
I've climbed Half Dome three times, and I think a couple of times I've gotten there early enough that there were only a handful of us on top. But the third time, yeah, the cables section was basically a solid line of people. Not fun!
I love Arches been there twice, now i have to go again to go to the tunnel. I also want to drive the white rim road out of Moab.
It's definitely a place worth visiting over and over again

Cool video! Also a lot of good hints about timing at popular National Parks. When I see those arches like you hiked up to, I always wonder how much longer they will stand? Next year? Or maybe a thousand or more? A blink of the eye geologically speaking.

Thanks for sharing your adventures! And thanks for the tip to arrive by 7am for less lines. Can you recommend the best ways for locating less-frequented hikes like this in National Parks?
A good starting point is to look at the guidebooks for an area. Sometimes the author will say how heavily used a trail is. And you can also compare what is in the guidebooks to lists of hikes that you can find online. If it's listed online but not in the guidebooks or park literature, the odds are good that it's less frequented.

We have Ayer's rock in Uluru national Park Central Australia and it looks pretty easy to climb but in it's history at least 37 people have died climbing it and a lot of them overseas tourists.

Tristan ,How about getting a wrangler with a roof top tent ? Incredible exploring
j solo Then he wouldn't be SUV RVing. LOL. There seems to be a different culture between roof top tent campers and SUV campers. Those Rubicon guys drag half their house along with them. Then they spend two hours dragging all their stuff out of their jeep, and setting up camp. Then they spend another two hours in the morning breaking their camp down and putting all their stuff away again. It's hard to get to the park at 7AM that way. SUV campers just go until it gets dark, then they eat something and climb into the back and go to sleep. Then wake up in the morning, eat something and they are ready to go. It's a much more simple travel lifestyle. It's the way I would like to camp if I had an SUV.
Try under a minute to set up the tent.Tristan would get 250k more subscribers , he does not have to go where the hard core goes just up his own game

Thank you so much for opening my eyes to the possibility of visiting the National parks again. I had given up on them due to the extreme crowds. I would love to hike in to that tunnel. Can you give the coordinates of the trail head and possibly the tunnel? I have been to Arches probably as many times as you said you have but I don't recall that trail head. If this information is in your book, please just give me the name of the book and I will gladly order it. Thanks again !
No Fiery Furnace? Been hiking for over 30 yrs and that was such a great time. My wife and I went the first week of December, will never hit any f the big 5 again in the late spring or early summer. The winter is where its at. Is the MIll Creek trail the one in the town of Moab? Love that whole area. Life changing experiences every time.
I've been to the Fiery Furnace before but didn't go in this visit. And yes, the Mill Creek trail starts not far out of town. Thanks for watching
