I had a 28 Skater with 300x's that ran 117 on fresh water. This boat takes a nice set with the 450's and runs hard. Would like to see one with the new 500's.

Great boat, I had a 24 Skater that had 2.4 engines, best boat I ever owned. Looked like the 28 had a slight porpoise and every time it drops down a little it will scrub speed. Early morning when it’s cooler might get you to 140 low on fuel. What a fantastic combination.

I know this sounds crazy but he's only pulling 6000 rpm. Max rpm I believe is 6400. May need to lower prop pitch to get maximum torque, may result in equal or just little more speed. From 136 to 140 sound like it should be easy but it can get really hard to achieve 4 mph. This is running so sweet at 136.

My first boat 30+ years ago was a 25 ft. Cougar MTR with twin 4 liter V8 Johnsons modded to almost 400 H.P. each and I could barely get to a 100 on a good day. These modern hulls are so much lighter and better engineered.

Propped correctly with the bottom ends at the right place this little 28' Skater should be doing at least 150mph. My brother-in-law recently bought a seconhand (16mths old) 39' MTI Carbon Ed. (11ft longer and much wider than this little cat) with 450Rs (>200hrs on the motors) it did 136mph GPS with props it came with but he got GPS 144mph afer lifting the engines 2cm and super-cupping the clevers to an extra 1" of pitch. Keep tuning guys as you should easily get 150mph. PS: the 39footer was setup for long distance / touring / adventuring so had huge fuel tanks and ~350kg of fenders, ropes, storage containers, Radios, Nightview IR and heat detection cameras, spare props, engine spares, etc. Top speed at purchase with tanks full and all that gear was only 132mph. Rumour has it the bigger 44' MTI's are good for ~135mph and they are nearly a ton heavier than the 28 Skater, just goes to prove you can tweek a bunch.

The tunnels on the 28s make the stability a concern at them speeds. I do agree that raising the motor will pick up MPH but the boat WILL become unpredictable at some point. The thinking that just because boat "x" did it means this boat can is misinformed. The 340, 390 and even the new 440 achieve the speeds you mentioned on a very efficient "cushion" , HP and setup is not the issue here its stability and testing. I understand your point and to be fair I DO think there is a fair amount more in this vessel but it would be like putting a GSXR motor in a mini bike and think you can outrun a street bike.

Looked like it was ready to take flight. And I know this is an old video, but when you were thinking your being heavier was slowing it down, what you weren't thinking about is that the boat probably burns 10 to 12 lbs of gas during every run. So the boat actually gets 10-12- or more pounds lighter after every run. I bet something in the engines warmed up a couple of degrees after that first run which will easily slow it down a mile or two per hour.

Okay I'm thinking inch-and-a-half /2in/3? off the windshield ,round the edges get rid of the cleats and center bow trim, double coat ceramic treatment on the hull, make rear seats fold down, and make the top 8 in on fronts removable.
then fabricate pointy-nose cones for the flat front section of the 450s and knife-edge the very front of the lower units and polish them with water repellent ceramic coat like the hull, have the hack boys tweak the rev limiters on the engine control management to up the rev limiter 100 or so....put on a couple of those crazy variable-pitch props that add a couple degrees pitch on the top end around 5800 utilizing centrifugal force.oh... and keep your head down... I wonder if compression cones around the props would work to contain energy loss around the outside edges of the screws...or maybe quad props w contain/compress surroundz....orrr
Get on the CNC machine and the lathe and fabricate us a trick ass set of bolt on shaft overdrive units for the lowers....aaaannd
I wonder how the 450s would like some 105 race gas with a shot of nitrous right around 5 grand....?
    🤔Hmmm

love the 28 skater, but its too old of a design, too short, not enough tunnel width, big old vw bus in the wind. Badass speed for that hull for sure, unfortunately" they" (the devil) are getting the same speed out of a 44 foot hull. Amazing the progress of performance outboard cats in the last bunch of years. i would have no problem jumping in a 28 skater in those conditions and feel totally safe chasing 140. that video looked like so much fun!!!

mmm that speed was achieved with only a 75kg driver, 200kg of gear and ~25gallons of fuel onboard. After adding 275gallons and another 40kg gear and an extra 60kg person the speed dropped to 132mph leaving to the west on the Caloosahachee. Also, that 44 is a super rigid, high-tech all carbon edition (hull is only 2,970lb), not really comparable to a everyday much 16ft smaller footprint, 2400lb Skater hull with the same engines (Skater has higher drag due to planing weight over area, ratio and smaller wind tunnel lift).

Sunoco sells 94 Octane PUMP Gas; they're known for having the best pump gas & race gas in the USA regardless so of course their 94 Octane Pump Gas would be worth looking into considering its also 1 octane higher than any other available high octane pump gas sold in the USA. I'm sure there's a Mercury Outboard ECU specialist in Florida somewhere that could match a custom map ecu flash to your specific outboards when paired exclusively to Sunoco 94 octane pump gas. Also one could order specially forged propellers from Italy or something. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Outboards are a pain to eek performance out of. Idk how people have patience for that type of performance tuning.

I have been running outboards for decades while everyone else with Skaters, DCB, MTI, Eliminator were all running Teague, Pfaff, BoostPower, and all kinds of crazy inboards. Now all the "gold chainers" (old guys with money who buy and don't build) are pitching those motors with their constant upkeep, and going to outboards. So Mercury sees this, and makes 300r, 400r, (pause so everyone can buy those) and then come out with 500r so everyone has to pitch those 450's and spend other bunch of money for...only 50 more horsepower!! Maybe 8 mph. then they will pause for 3 years, and release a 600r, and it starts again. Not an exact science, but it is interesting. And these little 28 footers are babies compared to the big boys. I thought I had something when I was the big fish at Havasue 30 years ago with my dual outboard Schiada, now it's nothing. And when you think you are the king, you go to Florida and those boys are spending 2m on center console fishing boats! At least they fish.

I got a regular style STV with a 2.5 300 Drag at 127 on my Stalker Radar gun in 1997 maybe. Pretty heavy boat with interior for 5. 34 Mazco cleaver if I remember right. I got the DCB owner in 93 or so with what was then the 2.5 SS(Prior to the Drag moniker) at 134 in a 19 Daytona a new stepped bottom when he was still rigging Eliminators and just came out with the DCB Mach 22.
Wow bro it took you two lame 4 wtrokes to hit 136mpj
One 3.3 liter 300x on a stv can do 140-150mph
Keep in mind omc still holds the oitboard record at 176mph official and 181mph unofficial, v8 outboard two stroke.
At the end of the day being at the lake in boats like this causes problems when sand and others want to actually enjoy there time
