  • In the late 1970s and early 1980s, in the wake of the growing interest in personal computers around the world, France aimed to establish its own computer industry and reduce its dependence on foreign technologies. To achieve this, the French government initiated the "Plan Informatique pour Tous" which means “Computing for All”. The French electronics company Thomson was chosen to develop microcomputers to be used in schools for educational purposes.
That was the official intention. The secret wish behind was to create a French success story, the like of Apple in the US or Sinclair in the UK. The goal to achieve was very ambitious and Thomson engineers began working in earnest...

Really great video about the Thomson TO7, a rather unknown machine to me. The specs are really impressive and i like the Lightpen, which is a kind of predecessor to the mouse. I recognized some Philips G7000 Videopac style joysticks. Also the game library seems to be also quite impressive. Best part for me, is where you appeared on screen! Its really nice to meet you, Anton! Wish you great success with your channel!

      Thanks a lot George!
I hope you could understand a word of two from my awful accent 😀
Yes Thomson were working with Philips, that explains some similitude in materiel.
Also looking for you to speak out on your channel someday :)

@@RetroDreamyour accent is quite clear & easy to understand and it's good to hear your actual voice. The voice-overs in your regular are very professionally done but it's always nice to recognize contributions to the retro community from outside the big communities (USA, UK, etc). Many of us grew up outside those countries and we had access to different computers, different gamebooks, and different tabletop games. But even so, videos like this help us realize that we still have a lot of connected experiences from growing up in those periods.

I think you're absolutely right. That's the way. We should all share and learn from each other and take each other as they are.
And also I guess I'm becoming paranoid because I usually get negative feedback whenever I try to speak English, it's such a pity because I like this language so much. Also had the same discussion on my other channel Age of Ink. You can check my last video there, similar discussion.
      Thanks for sharing!

Hey I really like your videos, and I enjoy hearing all the accents on RUclips. I had no idea your videos were voiced by someone else! I would be happy to see more videos in your own voice.

You're too kind... But I fear that even after the 5th or 6th take, my recording on this one is barely understandable :(

Nice to see more videos about the Thomson computers. They were great computers for the time. Living in Canada, I don't own one but I have emulated a few models using MAME. The light pen included with many models was nice. I have a LOGO.M7 file which is LOGO for the TO7 but figuring out the commands is tricky. AV is FORWARD, TD is RIGHT and TG is left.
The TO8 is interesting because it has 500K available to BASIC. The most any other 8-bit computer had was the Apple III with 200K. The TO8 was also interesting due to its palette of 4,096 colours.

Yes they had interesting features. A spirit of their own... Thanks for sharing your experience, glad to see they could interest people outside France!
