    My high school had Atari STs and I discovered them when I (voluntarily) went to Summer School. The teacher and another friend introduced me to Dungeon Master. They had printed all the maps and spells so I had a pretty good head-start on the game. Since then I've beaten it 3 or 4 times. What I really liked is how your skills naturally improve as you use them. I used to throw boulders around just trying to build up my strength. That's how it should be, right? Not assigning points willy-nilly! Oh, and Gothmog is my favorite character, I always have him in my party. :D

    I went from the Atari, to the NES, and then PC by the early 90's. I barely remember the switch from 16 to 256 colors. The big switch I remember came with windows 95 then 98, with CD drives and 3D acceleration, because that's when I stopped being able to play the current games, lol. I've still never owned an up to date gaming PC. Luckily, Sim City will play on a potato. As do Atari/NES emulators. 🙂

  • @mikecaster4612
    @mikecaster4612 10 дней назад

    I bought my Atari 1040STe in 1991 with the bigger (1435) color monitor. I played the games and enjoyed the simulation type programs like Flight simulator and Sim City, also used the word and spreadsheet "Sheet" (now known as Excel) programs. It helped me gain friends at Atari clubs, did term papers for college and I learned 3D modeling techniques that helped me in my career. Of course, since I learned computer programming via the Atari computer, I was able to get my "computer information sciences" degree. I became a CAD designer and had more 3D modeling experience than the employees working there who came off of board drawing (on actual wood boards, called drafters). Then, in 2003, the CEO of Ford Motor Company, Jack Nasser wanted to increase productivity - he gave every employee (170 thousand employees) a home computer and "cheap" internet access. He figured that everyone would have an e-mail and we would start emailing each other. (That's when work started following us home.) The floppy drive was not reading disks on my 1040STe computer, so I put the Atari away - for 30 years. I recently retired from my job and pulled the Atari computer back out to "walk down memory lane" and forgot the art (Neochrome, Degas, Spectrum) that I created. The hard drive still works and so does the 1040STe itself and I ordered a new floppy drive from Best Electronics. The reason to pull the Atari out - to keep my mind going. I don't want to eat and sleep and sit on a rocking chair until I die. The walk down memory lane reopened memory pathways that were 30 years old - good memories of friends and fun on a computer.

Even if many retro folks did definitely _not_ use original games most of the time (I did have some, but 10x more pirated stuff). I knew some people with MSX, but much more with C64 or even Atari 8 bit. One had an MSX2 with Metal Gear and Thexder. That was pretty impressive. Even if the Z80 was not a very good CPU at that time (1990), the smooth scrolling and same color and resolution as the Atari ST made it quite good.

For other software like text processing, DTP, music, or anything else, it was inferior. One thing it did have as an edge over the Atari ST was that it had a decently developed DOS, whereas the Atari ST had really silly super slow move and delete functions, requiring add-ons such as pinhead or Kobold to alleviate this.
