    If you think about it. Tokugawa's decision to fire at Hideaki Kobayakawa is a sound strategy even if it sounded insane when you hear it the first time. In fact, it is the most rational thing Tokugawa can do at the time other than ignore him and let Hideaki's cowardice decide for both sides. Specifically, Hideaki was promised both sides to flank the other side because he is a indecisive coward, so, by preparing for Hideaki's attack and pre-emptively firing at him, Tokugawa ensures that he will be best prepared in the case of Hideaki attacks him and also increases the chance of Hideaki will attack Mitsunari because the coward will likely attack the easier target--the Mitsunari and their allies who have their backs and flanks turned toward him instead of Tokugawa who are readied to defend against his assault.

      For a BCC tv production (this was from a series 2007/2008 called 'Heroes and Villains', retitled 'Warriors' when broadcast in the united states, and released around) this is pretty good.
      I've certainly seen better depictions of battles of the Sengoku Jidai, but I've also seen worse too.
      Budget is probably a factor in this, as well as a production staff with a workman, tv level experience.
      As previous replies mention it's not the most historically accurate (the uniformity of the banners given both armies were really confederations of Daimyo with their own banners).
      However, some of this simplification might have been necessary given the episode brevity, its English-speaking audience that likely won't have prior knowledge of even this most famous event in Japanese history, and, again, its budget.
      It's one of the better episodes of its uneven series at least, along with the Napoleon episode that focused on the siege of Toulon.

    It's a simplification for people to reduce this down to "loyal vs. disloyal." Many of the leaders involved at Sekigahara had debts and obligations to both sides. Everyone had been forced to swear fealty to the Toyotomi line, so it's not like this one guy or that one guy broke their word. The Toyotomi rule was in jeopardy the moment Hideyoshi became terminally ill with an infant son and creating an ineffectual bureaucracy to try to stalemate everything until his son (who turned out hugely incompetent later) had time to come of age. The Toyotomi family simply wasn't destined to rule Japan. Based on what we know of his behavior as a young man during the Osaka campaigns, he was not a fraction of the leader he would have needed to be to pick up the mantle of his father.
    Point 2.... losing the battle "only" because you were outmanuevered for allies and were unaware that people were going to turn on you, is losing the battle. They are not separate things.

      Contrary to common myth it was not a good idea to remain on mounted horse or even charge on it most of the time. Horse legs are delicate. A charge on horse back breaks enemy lines and then you dismount the horse and use the sword dependinf on grund and equipment. And thats the dangerous stupid way to do it and it usually fails.
      You only use a cavalry charge after the enemy infantry lines are already broken or risk the horse life when they refuse to rush into a defensive formation or the enemy lines break the charge with simple but adequate defensive tactics

    Hideaki Kobayakawa has lived and acted like a coward and died like a coward. I know that 2 years after Sekigahara he died of illness and had no successor to his clan therefore the Kobayakawa clan was no more and the provinces he was awarded after Sekigahara were given to the Asano clan (The very same clan that gave birth to the legendary 47 Ronin legend/history). In reality this betrayal was a waste upon the forces of Mitsunari and the Toyotomi clan, destroyed by the hand of an incompetent Daimyo who spends all his time worrying and indecisive. I do applaud Ieyasu's victory at Sekigahara though. Even without Hideaki's betray he still would have one with the help of veteran generals that have lived the entire Sengoku Jidai and an eventual arrival of his late son Hidetada Tokugawa plus also Ieyasu has been a long standing Daimyo in warfare since he's served both Nobunaga Oda and Hideyoshi Toyotomi. May any descendant of Hideaki forever live in shame (Not shame for long time.forever but just a smudge of shame on their name and history)

      ***** Did I ever mention that at times he would attack his own villages and ever assault women and children for no apparent reason. Some even speculate that he might've been a bit mentally ill to almost the point of insanity in which by all means I consider him yes an insane and dishonorable person that he has the audacity to assault the people that serve him. He is worser than Tadanao Matsudaira whom was the grandson of Ieyasu who owned the great fief of Echizen that gave him an almost gross million koku that he simply tossed away after his grandfather did not promote him to hatamoto when he and the Echizen troops were the very first to storm the castle of Osaka and even take the head of Yukimura Sanada. The only reason he tossed it was because it was not worth being a lower rank daimyo when he basically almost sacrificed his life and clan to destroy the Toyotomi. How is when he started to become mad and held a tournament in which he said that all competitors were to use live blades which was illegal during the reign of Hidetada Tokugawa. Because of this controversy the Shogunate exiled Tadanao and for the remainder of his life was a Buddhist Priest in Kyushu. At least Tadanao repented.

      +Nobunaga Oda (Mark Robles) The reason Hidetada was late, if my history is correct, was due to a conflict that may have happened on his way to Sekigahara. Wasn't there a battle between Hidetada's forces (among that army was Nobuyuki Sanada and his forces) and the combined forces of Nobushige and Masayuki Sanada, or was that fictional?
      I know that Nobushige and Nobuyuki were on seperate sides of the war, with the younger brother and father supporting Mitsunari and the older brother supporting the Tokugawa Shogunate.

    Samurai (侍) were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the late 12th century to their abolition in 1876. They were the well-paid retainers of the daimyo (the great feudal landholders). They had high prestige and special privileges such as wearing two swords.

  • @xtrucky
    @xtrucky 7 лет назад +32

    It was all a ruse. Hideaki and Tokugawa obviously had agreed to join forces before the battle, and Hideaki had instructions to wait for the best moment to strike. When Tokugawa signalled for a feigned retreat to get his opponent to commit more fully to the assault, Tokugawa signalled Hideaki with the cannons to attack.
    But that's not recorded as the official narrative, because those tactics were considered "shamefrul".
    Keep in mind that while Hideyaki had previously promised his aid to Mitsunari, Mitsunari had Hideaki stripped of his lands for brashness during the japanese invasion of korea. Lands which Tokugawa restored to Hideaki.

      It's actually stuff you can examine from different sources. It could be a strategy. It is a sound strategy even if it sounded insane when you hear it the first time. In fact, it is the most rational thing Tokugawa can do at the time other than ignore him and let Hideaki's cowardice decide for both sides. Specifically, Hideaki was promised both sides to flank the other side because he is a indecisive coward, so, by preparing for Hideaki's attack and pre-emptively firing at him, Tokugawa ensures that he will be best prepared in the case of Hideaki attacks him and also increases the chance of Hideaki will attack Mitsunari because the coward will likely attack the easier target--the Mitsunari and their allies who have their backs and flanks turned towards him instead of Tokugawa who are readied to defend against his assault.

    Of all things interesting about this battle the video somehow chose to focused on this weird sub plot abuot Matsudaira Tadayoshi...
    Also, what debt of honor? Tokugawa side simply promised Hideaki the title of Imperial Regent (Kampaku) if he joined his side. So did Mitsunari, that's the reason he was hesitate is simple, he didn't know who to bet on.
    And, in hindsight, it's a stupid mistake, the promised of Tokugawa side was never made by Ieyasu himself, and was of course not kept.
    On the other hand Mitsunari's promise was signed by himself along side four other daimyō.

    • @hjpop
      @hjpop 6 лет назад +5

      (Sorry for the necro-post): It's important that they focused on Tadayoshi. The bulk of the Tokugawa clan was sent with Hidetada (2nd son) on the Northern route so, at the time of battle, most of the Western Army was made of former Toyotomi clan loyalists (i.e. Fukushima Masanori, who was supposed to be the one to attack first). If Ieyasu were to have him strike, it would mean that a Toyotomi clan member, and not the Tokugawa, would have first honors in battle. This would've shamed him completely in the eyes of the other lords he was trying to rule and would allow Fukushima to have an outsized role to play in the post-battle realm. The first son, Nobuyasu, had committed suicide upon Nobunaga's orders decades before the battle while the third son had been adopted and married into the Yuki family, making him no longer a part of the Tokugawa. His fifth son was too weak and was left to defend Edo Castle, leaving only Tadayoshi to travel as part of the main army under Ieyasu. Thus, in order to protect the Tokugawa family honor, Tadayoshi was sent with Ii Naomasa to the front to "observe" and then attack, causing him to be the one who achieved first battle honors and preserving the prestige of the Tokugawa Family.

    Firing at Hideaki actually makes sense if you think about it, it FORCED him to make a decision, on Tokagawa’s terms, he couldn’t sit there and just get blasted, it forced his hand, if he attacks Tokagawa, then at least he’s being rushed into the attack not at his preferred moment, and if Tokagawa was going to end up fighting him, better sooner than later while he still had fairly fresh troops.
    It’s also easier for Hideaki to assault the side that isn’t firing cannons at him, also ensuring that went for the easier target. It was a masterful play on his psychology

    Has Anyone else noticed the similar setting of 2 rival armys hoping a 3. neutral army would join them during the fight like in these Battle and the Battle of Bosworth Fields during the War of Roses?

    If he wasn't killed then Oda Nobunaga would have been shogun not Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ieyasu hired genuine shinobi (ninjas) to help him gain power and the greatest samurai of all time Musashi Miyamoto actually fought as a soldier in some of those battles so it must have been a glorious time to have been a warrior but after Ieyasu became shogun and united the entire country under his command there was finally peace after hundreds of years of constant wars but the samurai didn't have shit to do after all the fighting stopped so the samurai really didn't have a purpose anymore so it must have been a better time for them before the shogunate was established because they had the chance to fight in many battles and they were able to show their skill with the katana sword and gain more honor and reputation with every battle they fought in and nowadays the Yakuza are like modern day warriors they go to war with eachother and are men of honor just like the samurai were and they are very powerful in Japan and their leader is like a modern day shogun but anyways I really like the Japanese culture its beautiful.
