Ninja Gaiden got brought up in a school discussion one day and I mentioned I had played the arcade game. A kid asked me how far I got and I mentioned that i quickly lost to the fat guy beating me with a telephone pole. The kid looked at me like I had a smoking turd on my head and told me he didn't know what I was talking about. It wasn't until way later on that I found we were talking about two totally different games.
That's kind of an amazing story! I think I played the NES game relatively shortly after the arcade game, so it kind of "overwrote" what Ninja Gaiden was at the time...but I never quite forgot just how goofy that arcade game was! Back then I was never able to find anyone else who had played it though!
I vaguely remember this one in the arcade (like the joystick that had its own fire button) but haven't played much of it since, so I may have to revisit it after seeing this video! One thing I always loved about it were the incredibly detailed backgrounds there's always so much going on in them you never know what you'll see next! the music was pretty good too.
You monster, bringing up that continue screen D: Seeing that in the neighboring Dairy Mart as a child....oof. I honestly didn't get to play that arcade one nearly as much as the NES, which I'm fine with. The NES games are fun enough, and frustrating enough, as it is :p
I knew you in particular would have something to say about the continue screen, since we've talked about it before! 😁 Yeah I definitely don't think this is BETTER than the NES game at all...I'd honestly rather go back and play that one. But I do think it's super interesting that they had a multi-pronged strategy to just like...come at people on all fronts with Ninja Gaiden?
This is a great Arcade game that certainly help elevate the Ninja Gaiden franchise, along with the iconic NES titles. Much like the NES titles, this is also a frustratingly tough game to play though and was certainly one of those titles back in the day that i remember seeing very little of due to dying very quickly on the first stage....and yes! That Game Over screen absolutely terrified me as a kid!
Right?! Truly it's stuck with me ever since I played it! And yeah, I was surprised to go back and see just how hard each of these Ninja Gaiden games were...but in completely different ways! Tecmo certainly had an interesting brand strategy for Ninja Gaiden!
@@BClarkOMP The Ninja Gaiden franchise is similar to that of the Double Dragon franchise. With Tecmo making an interesting collection of titles that depict the iconic Ninja throughout the years. Just like the Double Dragon series, Ninja Gaiden is another victim of being milked too much and quickly being dumped soon after. I feel that Ninja Gaiden could have a resurgence, similar to titles such as Ninja Warriors etc. With either a new pixel/art style and the right passion could certainly bring it back from the dead.
@@shimsham6 Yeah, I think I agree with this! Though I'd maybe so that Double Dragon was a BIT more mismanaged as a franchise than even Ninja Gaiden was! It had some REAL stinkers!
@@BClarkOMP True, Technos certainly went willy nilly with the Double Dragon franchise and produce a rather odd/amusing games such as Battletoads Vs Double Dragon: The Ultimate Duo or Double Dragon - The Movie: The Game.
Dragon Ninja: I kidnapped the president Bladestradamus: hold my apocalypse beer Lots of memories of this brutal quarter muncher in arcades, usually me watching a better skilled player (or one with way more quarters)😅
He certainly was holding a lot of apocalypse beers! And yeah I've never really seen anyone in an arcade who was actually GOOD at this...but I'm sure there must have been some! For me it was always a person with way more quarters!
@@BClarkOMPand one more thing....some of the background art detail is amongst the best in the genre. The wall mural behind Bladestradamus looks like it belongs on the side of an '80s van lol. Love all the signs and the "RYGAR" graffiti in one level
@@ralang999 Ah you're right, I totally forgot to call out that specific piece of graffiti! But yeah, I really love all the graffiti of people and everything that's all around a few of those levels!
This is the impression I got with the time I spent with it, but boy it being so zoomed in certainly detracted from that port for me, as good as it was!

What a well researched video. Interesting insights into the classic arcade. Good job!
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it!

It's hard as nails, but yeah there's a lot more interesting going on in it than I had remembered!

The Atari lynx version is the Arcade version but they also have nes ports on there too❤
